Antonio Rodrigo 'Minatauro' Nogueira apologizes to fans for UFC 92 loss to Frank Mir

big nog

Props: UFC.com

Quoteworthy:

"I apologize to all my fans for my fight on Saturday, and I’m very disappointed with what happened, but I promise that I’ll be back stronger and better in 2009. I’ve come back before, and I’m going to get the title back.... I’ve got a lot of respect for Frank Mir, he fought a great fight and was the better man that night. I was ready to fight, but he got to me before I was able to get to him."

Former UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo 'Minatauro' Nogueira issues his first formal statement after losing his title to Frank Mir at UFC 92: "The Ultimate 2008." Nogueira was battered by Mir for the entire first round, which is common for the Brazilian -- his durability is legendary. Uncommon, however, was the fact that he was finished via technical knockout in the second round. A feat that Fedor Emelianenko, Josh Barnett, Mirko Cro Cop and even "The Beast" Bob Sapp have been unable to accomplish. Perhaps most surprising is that Mir -- a Brazilian jiu-jitsu blackbelt -- schooled Nogueira in the stand up -- an aspect that Nogueria appeared to have the advantage heading into the fight. Not the case. This marked the third fight for Nogueira inside the Octagon. In his first two matches he was dropped by Heath Herring and Tim Sylvia, respectively. He went on to win those fights in his usual fashion, but could not endure the onslaught from Mir. Has it all finally caught up to Nogueira or is this latest loss just an anomaly?

he should be. what the fuck is the greatest grappler in the world doing standing up with mir. did he not get the clue after the first round. very, very disappointing. i was actually embarrased for him.

Just give mir his props.. he came in shape and ready to fight and he took nogueria out! When nobody even gave him a chance…

Nogueria isnt giving excuses he just admits mir was rhe better man that night…And while big nog is a great grappler he is not the greatest in mma.

It still hasn’t sunk in for me what transpired. I said that Mir would never beat Nog even if hell froze over, but all i can do now is give him respect. Regardless this is a sad day for all because the greatest legend of the sport is nearing the end. Still i’ll never give up on him.

Mir stopping Nog! What does that say about the supposed “god” Fedor not doing it in two fights? I have never been impressed with Nog. A guy who gets pounded on and then pulls off a sub! IMO Randy would hurt him worse than Mir!!!

by JV on Dec 29, 2008 4:45 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

All the beatdowns he took in his life is now taking it’s toll. Nonetheless, one of the most durable in the sport hands down…

I dont know what to say about what happened in this fight Saturday night. I lost a boatload of MOney on this fight.

When we make predictions on this site we do so assuming that the best version of a fighter will show up. I felt really bad for Nog saturday night. He looked like Crap. He may have only thrown like 3 punches the entire fight.

Props to Mir, but I dont think he looked as great as everyone seems to think. I think Nog made him look good. Mir was basically throwing the same combo over and over again and he still seemed to gas at the end of round 1.

I am having a hard time coming to a conclusion about what happened. Dont want to take anything away from Mir but that was the absolute worst I have ever seen Nog look in a fight. I am not sure if he is DONE from all the beatings….or if his strategy was to sit back and let Mir get tired the 1st couple of rounds. Either way, he looked absolutely terrible!

The one bright spot in his performance is that now he is available to fight Couture if Randy ever stops ducking him. Problem with this is I heard Randy is doing a new movie and might not fight again till Late in 09 or early 2010.

Brock might Kill Mir!

JV – it’s pathetic that an educated fan like you would claim that Nog’s career is “get pounded on then pull off sub.” It’s amazing that people try to trash his accomplishments like he wasn’t a top 2 HW for the past decade.

by NameNotRequired on Dec 29, 2008 10:25 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

truth is nog has been in decline since his fight with kharitonov. he has been steadily looking more and more sluggish. maybe its all the beatings he took and of coarse the whole gettin hit by a truck that have taken their toll on him but nog looked very bad against herring as well. coming to the ufc he has just looked awful and the surgery he had before hand probably helped that along

I was in shock.. I thought overall the event was real good..2/3 of my main event picks won…but the most important one to me didn’t go as I fore saw.. I felt like a family member of mine got his ass wooped.. it is what it is.. Hats off the Mir.. he kept doing his 3 strike combo.. over and over again.. and as my esteemed fellow maniac John said.. That was the worst Nog performance ever… Me personally I’ve never seen Big Nog perform like that.. I was so quiet the first round..I wouldn’t of heard a pin drop in my own mind.. I didn’t want to believe it.. but maybe in the 1st 90 seconds.. I knew Nog was in trouble.. Damn.. = (

Mir won.. I was in shock.. I’m bias.. I look up to Nog as a figher and as a person.. and I’m always going to root for the guy.. he is IMO a Class Act..

Now I just hope… really do.. nothing against Mir.. but I hope Brock destroys him.

Nog will need IMO at least two good victories over game opponents to get a crack at whom is the Champ in the winner of Brock and Mir.. what do you guys thing of maybe sometime down the line… Nog vs Napao?

by PhilQNY on Dec 29, 2008 11:11 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i had to watch the fight again last nite to get a better perspective, think the shock may have affected my viewing, john is right, same 3 punch combo, not taking anything away from mir, just cant seem to understand how nog let it happen over and over again, standing straight in front of him, he didnt even try to create any angles! did anyone else here rogan and goldies comments right after buffer introduced herb dean, they couldnt understand why buffer was so serious, rogan even said he made him feel nervous, kind of hard to hear but still funny!

by jslim on Dec 29, 2008 6:08 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

instead of apologizing he could have come in shape..

by shamo84 on Dec 29, 2008 6:52 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

agreed… he came out of shape and wasn’t fighting up to his usual level, Mir kept throwing the same 3 punch combo about 20 times in the first round and kept catching nog with the uppercut.. I think coaching in The Ultimate Fighter season hurt nogs training BIG TIME.

by Chris on Dec 29, 2008 8:32 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Just like it affected Mir’s training? If lazy ass Mir could get into shape, then Nog had no excuse not to.

by Pat on Dec 29, 2008 9:21 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

agreed…it looked like he didnt even train for this fight!!

by newfie on Dec 29, 2008 8:33 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

he is on the decline sadly. His reaction to trying to avoid punches is just not there anymore. Lets not forget he could easily have been 0-3 at this point in the ufc. he took a real beating against sylvia and even heath. hes had lackluster performances since joining the ufc, its not like it just started w mir. You can just see it and feel it when fighters are starting that decline, and i think both, noguera and chuck are showing that.

nog doesn’t have to apologize he is a pupil and legend of the sport that has always carried himself with a lot of class theres a first time for everything hopefully he will be able to get back in there but age might be catching up on him

by matt on Dec 29, 2008 1:21 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

agreed. sad, uninspired performance.

by Jake on Dec 29, 2008 1:23 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

To me, it wasn’t even Nog fighting on sat. night…

by zheka. on Dec 29, 2008 1:33 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

To me it looked like the same Nog. I think Mir was the one who looked different..

You have to admit that Mir has improved by leaps..I think it would be the same outcome if they fought agian..Frank Mir just got that much better..IMO he will defeat Brock again.

by c-war on Dec 29, 2008 2:30 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yea give mir props and big nog respect cuz he’s a legend in mma and still has the balls to admit he let his fans down. I hope he comes back better but he might also be done. retirement could be a better option……

by mmaloco on Dec 29, 2008 1:42 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I feel the same way about him and wanederlei, they are great men and exiting fighters.. Always respectful while wandy does get fired up sometimes thats what makes him great, his passion for fighting so win or lose ill always be a fan of both of these guys!

by mike22 on Dec 29, 2008 1:54 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Nogueira and Wanderlei are shot.

by Robert on Dec 29, 2008 2:04 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You obviously dont get the point.. I think we can all tell wandy and nogeira are not the same championship level fighters they once where.. does that mean they should quit?
No, I wanna see both of these guys fighting for as long as they can compete. and i hope thats for a long time.

by mike22 on Dec 29, 2008 2:12 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Who said they should quit? All I’m saying is these guys finally get to fight in front of the UFC fans at the end of their careers and the average UFC fan has no idea how good these guys were. You’re just to emotional about their situations saying you hope they compete for a long time. I’m being very objective because I’m not a fan of either of them not that I hate them, but not a fan, and I’m saying Nog doesn’t have many battles left and that’s 3 brutal KO’s Wanderlei has suffered in his last 5 fights if he’s knocked out again like that he’ll be getting a long suspension from the athletic commission. Just like Sean Salmon did.

by Robert on Dec 29, 2008 2:29 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Nog always handles himself with class. Can’t do anything but respect the guy. Mir looked great. His striking was crisp, I’ve never seen his stand up look so good. I had Nog winning last night, but there was a stark difference between him and Mir. I’m with you mike. I want to see Wandy and Nog fight as long as they can but I don’t want them staying too long. I don’t need to see them taking that kind of punishment. They are legends and when they do go out it should be as close to the top as possible.

by DSmith on Dec 29, 2008 2:43 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Robert, I was always a fan of Nog but became a big fan of his after TUF. I think you’re right… I don’t think we’re ever going to see the Nog of old again… the way he beat Tim Sylvia is the way I’d like to remember him… I’m honestly a little worried about him and his ability to forge on in MMA… we’ll see in his next fight, but I get the feeling he’s going to need to consider retiring sometime soon.

Mir came out sicker then ive ever seen em before glad that Mir is back 110%. Sad that big Nog lost to him his epic battles might have caught up to him i wont say so just yet one more fight and we will all know for sure.

How can you not like this guy? He is everything you want in a fighter. He is humble, kind, and soft spoken yet he has heart of a lion. Minotauro is a legend. All the real MMA fans know wassup.

by skelow on Dec 29, 2008 4:14 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

umm totally dissapointed
hey guys am i the only one who came to a bar to watch the fights and tell all of his friends that mir will never be able to TKO/KO nogueira cuz he is a legend and has the greates chin and then gets embarrassed… hehe well that happen to me, after the fight i tried to explain to mi friends that everything can happen in MMA but i think was to late LOL
even though i am still looking forward for the next fight of minotauro i still think he has some more to offer
maybe randy, make sense right…

by JoW on Dec 29, 2008 4:32 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

No need to effin’ apologize man! You’re a legend, let it be. No excuses. You were outclassed by Mir. Period…

Don’t feel bad Nog. You gained a ton of fans during the show and we all look forward to seeing you working your way back up in the ranks in some competitive fights.

if anything, he probably lost fans, or at least maybe his fans now see that the abuse he has taken in fights has finally caught up with him

by Chadx23 on Dec 29, 2008 11:25 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

As Rogan said it and I’m saying it, some fighters get to a point where they just can’t take punishment anymore Wandy and Nog look beat up and shot. This is coming from A big Wandy fan. Chuck looked liked he was going to cry…maybe they were supposed to fight again?

by Robert(1) on Dec 29, 2008 9:24 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Nah, I think Chuck was hoping Page would lose so he could get a third match against him. Wasn’t really rooting for Wandy, he just wanted Rampage in a rematch is my guess.

by O Damn he got caught on Dec 29, 2008 10:51 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Am i the only one who thinks this fight was stopped early since everyone knows thats Nog starts off slow? I’m not saying he wasn’t getting his a$$ whooped, but you kinda have to give him a chance with him being the champ. Mir only landed like 2 or 3 clean blows when he finished and Nog wasn’t out. Thats how he usually pulls off his subs. Anyways , I hope Mir destroys Brock!

by Mike T. on Dec 29, 2008 9:34 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yes, best of luck to Mir against Brock.
Minatauro was getting out classed but I agree with Mike T. that Herb Dean was a little too cautious on that call. I’ve watched that fight a few times now and every time to me it looks like Minatauro moves to half guard but then decides to move to guard and is about to pull gaurd when Herb jumped in. I’m not saying that it was a bad call, because Mir was clearly up on the score cards and may have even won round #1 10-8 but if it had been a different referee (or Herb hadn’t jumped in so quickly) we may be talking about the most epic heavyweight ground exchange ever on American soil. I like both Mir and Nog and respect their camps a lot.. can’t wait to see what ’09 brings for both of them.

by fleet on Dec 29, 2008 10:35 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Stopped the fight too fast? Did you not see Nog stagger like a drunk when he stood up? Herb was on the case and stopped it when it should have been.

by KrunkDaddy on Dec 29, 2008 10:50 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Early stoppage for sure. He walks like that anyway!

by Ca$z on Dec 29, 2008 11:21 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Mir knocked Nog down 3 times prior to the ref stoppage and the last time when Nog was down Mir jumped on him and dealt out some more punishment. Nog could barely stand up and was wobbled. Come on guys lets face it if the ref let it keep going it would have been more of the same. Be glad that Mir didnt get the chance to KO him cold and leave him really embarassed like Wanderlei was, or maybe thats what some Nog fans wanted….

by Chadx23 on Dec 29, 2008 11:29 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If the ref had jumped in as quick as was the case against Mir, Nog would not have beat Tim Sylvia.. I bet after the shot he took from him nog would not have been able to stand right up and walk around. He takes a shot and goes into guard while recovering.. thats his M.O. I would have loved to see a ground battle between the two..

by Chris on Dec 29, 2008 2:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

so this fight was stopped to early but rampage was stopped too late? damn you guys are picky! i think nog might be a better fighter today if refs hadn’t let him take so many beatings throughout his career. the only stoppage i thought was bad was the kongo fight. i called mir by the way. pat me on the back please.

by jonsey on Dec 29, 2008 12:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If you’re not willing to take a beating, than this isnt the sport to get into. So long as your “intelligently” defending yourself, they should not stop the fight. Thats what I hate about boxing, you hit the ground and they make you break, in MMA you can take a solid shot and continue the fight from your back.

by Chris on Dec 29, 2008 3:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The fight wasn’t stopped early. Nog tried to stand up afterwords and almost fel. It was a good call to stop it and maybe even earlier.

Mir says he will never be beaten by Lesnar.

by CaptainAmerica1967 on Dec 29, 2008 10:41 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I guess it’s because i wanted Nog to win so bad after watching Mir talk on TUF. I wanna see Mir choke out Brock!

by Mike T. on Dec 29, 2008 11:15 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

i didnt give mir a chance when this couldve been an easy bet. as soon as nog walked in i had a bad feeling. he was going reallly slow and he just looked flabby. poor nog guys such a legend, his heart and mind is there but his body is wayyy to old to be fighting.

by Jared on Dec 29, 2008 11:40 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Ever since Mir had the accident,I’ve been waiting for this day..He whooped NOGs ass.I used to be a big fan of NOG until I seen how much shit he was talking about Mir.I think a lot of people counted Mir out on this fight. Now he’s on top and gonna show everyone why Brock Lesnar shouldn’t be in the UFC..Randy vs NOG should be great…Congrats to Mir.

by mmasmartass on Dec 29, 2008 11:55 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I just wonder why the UFC pays Nog 250,000 and Wandy(the caveman)200,000, guess they sandbagged the UFC. Its funny how Dana gets a hard on for all the Brazilian guys and they never deliver for amount of money he pays them.

by Bigmcmac on Dec 29, 2008 2:47 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It’s not their fault or the UFC’s they have good managers… plus… Mir will get 100,000 to show minimum for his next fight, if he doesn’t he should fire his management. Also it’s looking more like people want to see Wand in particular put out to pasture, so he’s going to need that money. Minatauro is like the Brazilian real life equivalent of Rocky, so people will always root for that dude, even if he was entering the Octagon in a wheelchair.

by fleet on Dec 29, 2008 6:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Randy vs Nog will happen, at least i hope so.

by Ted on Dec 29, 2008 5:46 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

i trully believe, nog, is suffering from pugilistic dementia, even if its just the beggining of it. his reflex are slow, in his last fights (sylvia, hh) this could be clearly seen.
add to this his “blind eye rumor” that surrounds him since pride.
dont know.. dont know
maybe indeed, all years of beating are now becoming clear.

props to frank mir.
and lets see what awaits minotauro.

by jay on Dec 29, 2008 6:58 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Randy vs Coleman MIGHT be OK

I’d like to see Randy vs Herring!!!

Nog is still one of the nicest guys to walk the face of the Earth. Champ to the bone, title or no title. Mir’s going to show the world what’s up in March (or will Lesnar?) We’ll see. Hats off to Nog though. Catchers mitt leather for a face, but a heart of gold.
