UFC Quick Quote: Brock Lesnar vs Frank Mir rematch to declare undisputed champion

"Im looking for Frank Mir. I need a rematch with Frank."

-- UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar talks before the fight between Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira and Frank Mir about who he wants next. Wish granted -- Mir pulled yet another rabbit out of his hat to score an awesome technical knockout win over the legendary Brazilian, punching his ticket in the finals of the mini four-man tournament opposite Lesnar. Mir and Lesnar first met earlier this year at UFC 81: "Breaking Point." The former champion -- and now reigning interim titlist -- ate about 30 hamhocks before cinching in a fight-ending kneebar. Will history repeat itself or will Lesnar score revenge in Act II?

Awesome Frank Mir! The best he’s looked!

by t-dog on Dec 28, 2008 12:58 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

As good as people are going to say Mir looked. Nogueira looked absolutely terrible! He was overweight and looked very slow. The battles he’s been in over the years have taken a toll as they have with Wanderlei. They may be 32 or 33 but they both look as old as Randy.

I hate to admit it, but there is some truth to what you say. Also, I honestly think Brock takes Mir this time.

by naturalshadow on Dec 28, 2008 2:27 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Older! buts that the fight game and thats is why I thought they would pull through.

by Ro-J on Dec 28, 2008 5:47 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yep, use the washed up excuse as soon as the guy you picked to destroy, gets DESTROYED. That’s lame, Nog has always looked slow and never ripped. Face it Mir crushed him and is the more skilled fighter. Wandy is back when he KO’s Jardine in a matter of seconds and then all the sudden he is washed up. That must have been a rough couple of months for Wandy to go from back to washed up so quick.

For one, where the HELL is john. I thought for sure he was better than this, more of a man than to run away when his boy (NOG) gets beat. At least come make excuses for him jeeeeeez.
Mir did look pretty good, I hope he can beat Lesnar again. Did you guys see Mir call him out? “you have MY belt!!” haha im already pumped.

by The Anomaly on Dec 29, 2008 2:58 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Hey GORD, u must not watch that much MMA, because if u did, u would realize that Nog was ripped in his early days when he would fight Shogun, and before he fought fedor in which he was still ripped, so shut you mouth before u say something that isn’t true. Nog is out of his prime, looked like Poo, and Mir was better on his feet, sad enough if he tries to strike with Lesnar he will get his faced mashed in which i am hoping and even if it goes to the ground lesnar will dominate there until he realizes that Mir could pull something off, they will stand up and Mir will get KTFO

Mir looked the best he’s looked in a long time but noguira looked like crap. Too bad Mir won’t be able to outbox Brock this time around. I’m predicting Lesnar by ko. He knows what not to do, and that’s go to the ground.

by allamerican on Dec 28, 2008 9:09 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah,Nog looked like crap, but so do all fighters when they are getting owned from the opening bell. Mir was on him like white on rice and kept peppering him with 3 strike combos. Mir never gave Nog time to find his range, he was to busy eating leather. Mir displayed some very technical striking and his speed for a 250 lb guy was amazing. Even the mighty chin of Nog can only take so many flush punches from a big guy like Mir. Hats off to Mir, he looked great now that he finally dedicated himself to really training.

i think mr lesnar needs way more experience and learn about whos he going to fight .instead of just charging like a rage bull in heat.experience its the key factor lesnar is missing.

how much money did everyone lose tonight…haha good thing i stayed away from this card for some odd reason, i know if i did throw some down i woulda lost quite a bit…i was lucky

by ehoglund on Dec 28, 2008 1:00 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Me too. I had a sixth sense about this card too and with all the money Ive spent this xmas I couldn’t bare to lose any dough on top of that.

Not taking anything away from Frank but Nog looked dreadful and it hurts me to say that but his best days are passed him. To be honest looking back he hasn’t looked his best since coming into the UFC even though he has managed to win. He had no determination whatsoever in this fight and I don’t see him competing for much longer as he looks slow and cumbersome in his movements. What a shame.

by the_mexicutioner on Dec 28, 2008 1:06 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I can’t believe no one has given Mir his full props this far down the blog. Most are saying it wasn’t a matter of Mir being good but a case of Nog looking bad. Shame on you haters. Mir did what he needed to earn your respect so give it up. Nog was previously un-ko’d by the worlds best so I think Mir’s punches COULD DEFINITELY phase Brock. I’ll bet on Brock in that fight but for now great job Frank

I give him his props ,I think that people are wrong to to bash Nog,looked like the same guy to me ,just Mir came in on his A game,Mir has never looked that good .He looked absolutly flawless with his striking.I still think he is a cocky a hole, but he deserves all the praise in the world .On the other hand ,I will be putting all my money on Brock in the rematch,Brock has hate for Mir ,and I predict what Mir did Nog is exactly what the gameplan Brock will implement on him.Prediction 1st round ko

Lesnar has stand up. Watch UFC 91, he dropped Couture with dome shots, and then once on the ground he pounded a way at Couture’s head with more. As the dude said from ESPN “he is dribbling Couture’s head”. I think we can expect much of the same, considering Lesnar can pace himself

by Cory on Dec 28, 2008 1:14 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Mir didn’t beat Couture….BUT Lesnar did. Couture also defeated Sylvia….just like Nog did. The logic goes no where.

You said Mir will win…Just because of how he did in the first fight? Well, Rampage defeated Wanderlie Silva tonight. As I recall, Rampage was brutally knocked out in their two prior fights. See what I’m saying? Brock has gotten a lot better. We will see what happens. I think Brock might have his hands full.

by RyanHobbs on Dec 28, 2008 1:38 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Mir also has a win over Sylvia. Yes, it was several years ago, but a win is a win. After his complete destruction of the indestructible one, nobody can say Mir is an unworthy champ or interim champ or whatever he is.

by PW on Dec 28, 2008 10:58 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I certainly think that Mir is worthy. Like I said, I think Brock will have his hands full in this next fight. Mir showed great stand up ability and we already know that Mir is capable of submitting Lesnar. I also think that Mir will have his hands full as well. This is a tough match up for both competitors and whoever comes out on top deserves to be the UFC heavyweight champion.

by RyanHobbs on Dec 29, 2008 6:05 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

All you frank mir hater can stick it. dont jump on his band wagon now and dont hate on him. he proved his worth tonite. He came off as a douche on tuf but thats probably from editing. Frank will destroy brock. he has better bjj and showed tonite that his striking is better. All he needs to tighten up is his conditioning and he will do that. A motivated frank mir is the most dangerous. Congrats to frank!

by Hughes Sux on Dec 28, 2008 1:18 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

No I still hate hime, wel I can’t say that I respect him as a fighter, as a business man he picks all the wrong angel, so part of his band wagon I will never be.

by Ro-J on Dec 28, 2008 5:51 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

And still no credit or respect for Mir—after he goes out and TKOs a guy who has never had that happen before. And he did it all with striking.

You can’t write “nog should have won that easy” and then say you have no respect for Mir. It doesn’t make sense.

by The Zoner on Dec 28, 2008 1:19 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

i absolutely agree with you, im a big Nog fan as well as Mir, why cant you just respect them both? tko’ing a guy thats never been finished in as many fights as nog has had, with the competition he’s had is Huge, as for lesnar i honestly hate the guy and hope mir “pulls another rabbit out of his hat”

Nog was not knocked out, Herb Dean stopped that too soon. Nog would have submitted him on the ground. Why do you think mir didnt want to go to the ground? Nobody ever knocked nog out. If fedor and cro cop couldnd KO him, how can mir do it?? whatever, lesnar will show everybody what a fluke mir is… that guy lost to brandon vera for pete’s sake..

Excuses, excuses, Mir destroyed Nog from the get go and yes Nog was out or on his way because he was eating huge bombs. None of the fights on that card were stopped to early, 1 or 2 of them went to long if anything. Notice how Nog agreed with the reporters about being KOed for the first time. Who cares what Fedor or CC CAN’T do, Mir did it with ease. CC couldn’t make it in the UFC and Fedor went to decision against the 2 best guys he has fought (Nog&CC).GG owned CC and Mir owned Nog the entire fight and finished them early. Fedor needs to get his ass in the UFC, but I doubt that will happen now even more than ever, because Fedor’s not stupid and he’s a pussy, he is well aware that Nog and CC were his toughest challenges in Pride and there are guys in the UFC that can smoke those 2 like they are amatures.

by RyanHobbs on Dec 28, 2008 1:40 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

i dont think tim deseves to be back in the ufc. there are too many good up and coming hw’s and big dummy is 1-3 in his last 4 and was stopped 3 times. i wouldn’t mind seeing mir break his arm again, but there are too may young guns like dos santos, cain, carwin (not so young) and newcomers like pat berry, stefan struve and maybe saito ishe. the hw division looks awesome for the ufc’s future and tim’s time has passed. at least he got rich off of fedor stomping his a$$

I don’t think Dana will bring Tim Silvia back to the UFC. He wasn’t loved by either the promotion or the fans. Tim had better hope that Affliction or a new promotion is able to grow legs and provide a home for 2nd tier fighters.

We have to give MIR credit. He has done an awesome job at coming back into the game.
Sure he may have sounded cocky at times but I think that was part of his mental prepartion. He needed to hear him self say it to believe it.

Lesnars gonna take Mir down early again and unless Mir can pull off another submission, he’s gonna take a beating early and often. Mir doesnt have a gas tank to make it into the later rounds. I think Lesnar takes the rematch via tko 2nd round. Def. wouldnt be surprised if Mir wins though, I really didnt give him a shot tonight against Nog and he as hell shut me up.

So many valid points here.
I would say Frank DEFINITELY has the momentum going into the fight against Brock next year. But a lot of points to be noted in favour of both fighters make the next bout a must watch.

1. Mir outclassed Nog like noone has. Seriously.
2. Mir is much more better as a striker, boxer and in submission skills than Brock.
3. Mir has won the previous bout against Brock.
4. Mir is not 220 pounds like Couture was.

Now,
1. Brock Lesnar- underestimate him you may, but I dont know too many guys who without submission skills, without striking or boxing skills would have made it as far as he has.
2. Let’s not forget that when he faced Mir he almost knocked his lights out in his first UFC bout losing out in the end to what was a rookie mistake.
3. As mentioned earlier, not too many guys would look good in defeat against Mir and then go on to beat Herring and Couture in only their 2nd and 3rd fights.
4. Brock Lesnar is a SUPERB athlete with unparalleled conditioning and needless to say a genetic freak.
5. You can coach technique but you can’t coach strength.
6. Brock is a better grappler FOR SURE. That’s how he won his fights so far. He drained the opponet’s strength and then got a break.

YES, the odds are in favour of Mir, but do not underestimate Brock. The next match ought to smash all UFC PPV records. Seriously. CAN’T WAIT!

lesnars explosive closing speed will be the difference imo. no one in the hw division can close with that kind of speed and power. mirs strikes looked very impressive. but that was against a fighter with slow reflexes. nog has always eaten punches. herring probably hit him the hardest as far as one punch. the best chance mir has is with that head kick of his. but he needs to follow through with it. last nights he looked to be half-kicking, not following through. mir looked really good last night but i don’t think the power of lesnar can be defended by him. this time i think lesnar continues the GNP and doesnt stand up. mir could not controll his strength on the ground last time and i really dont see much difference this time around except now lesnar has a little more jits training.

by Buttcrack Obama bin Laden on Dec 28, 2008 4:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Head Kicks would be a legitimate threat except for the fact that if he does not KO Brock with the kick then Frank will be SMASHED to the ground in and instance or as we have seen with head kicks you leave your own head exposed and Frank knows full well he cannot take any punches from Brock. His only chance is on the ground and like you said I don’t see Brock making the same mistake. He will simply out power and will actually have some technique to get out of submissions. I am not counting Frank out all together but it will be tough for him. Couture is a better striker than Mir IMO and Brock caught him standing up. I think Randy is better at avoiding punches as well and Brock caught him. Again, I think Randy has a better chin or overall toughness (I realize Brock did not catch him on the chin) and Brock again still dropped him. It is really adding up to a very confident and cocky Mir getting his as pounded. I agree with earlier posts that Frank just needed to be cocky to be successful but as we have seen in the past, people who need to be cocky to succeed crumble when they are in deep water.

by TR on Dec 29, 2008 9:40 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

you made some very good points. but you failed to say how much better of a wrestler brock is. as you saw in herrings and coutures fights, brock, as a wrestler, has the ability to ‘control’ his fights because of his wrestling. I pick brock this time round because of this. He will not fall for a submission like he did last time. Hes got his purple belt in jiu jitsu so hes smart enough to evade the submissions, definitely not dish them out. I basically see this fight ending by knockout, or just mir getting tired and getting pummeled.

mir is a better boxer than brock??? really now. would you say that mir is a better boxer than couture? we saw what happened. i dont know about you but i dont think so.

ive been a ufc fan since royce gracie won the first tournament. and since the heavyweight division has been around in ufc im tired of seeing fat sloppy looking heavyweights. I believe with the popularity of mma on the rise we will see more competitive atheletes enter the ufc and mma. Lesnar is just the beginning of things to come.

I say fck em both !!! Feed them to Fedor..lets see how long mir lasts against Fedor. Nog fought the man 3 times, 2 fights going the distance and they were some couch lover 5 min rounds. I guarantee you if Mir were to weather just 1 fight of Fedor, i could straight shot his ass to the ground. You people really think that the wars nog has gone though havent had an effect on him ? you really think that straight shots with not much powerbehind them dropped a Nog in his prime ?? Whats next, holyfield and ali to fight to prove greatest boxer of all time ? Use your fckin heads for common sense, Nogs fights have caught him and its been easily recognized for his past few fights.

And here we go. Serra beat GSP because he punched him behind the ear. Griffin didn’t deserve the win over Rampage because he just tried to out-point him. And now Mir only beat Nog because Nog has taken so much abuse. Mir didn’t win with a 1-punch ko out of nowhere. He dominated Nog from the opening bell. There was nothing lucky, fluky or undeserving there.

I agree with some in that it was not how good Frank Mir was, it was how bad Nog looked. I thought the same when he fought Tim Sylvia and said that if Tim was not so afriad of finishing a fight and did not always go for the descision he could have beaten him and that if it was Kongo fighting Nog instead of Sylvia with Kongo having 10 times the stand up abilty of Sylvia and Kong not afarid to finish a fight, Kongo would have beaten him. I got slated for saying that, but what Mir did was exactly what I thought Sylvia could have done if he had any balls that night. Nog has been in one too many wars. Mir will not beat Lesner with that stand up performance, and I still do not rate him in the top 5.

by Ade on Dec 28, 2008 9:42 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

If you say that tim could have beat mir if he would have wanted to….you obviously have never watched the fight mir finished tim in minutes!! Tim could not have done anything differant. Mir is a stud!! If he trains to the best of his ability and focuses cardio..he will hold the belt for a long time and wont be beat easy, that is fact even if your opinion is different!!!

Absolutely he knows he got well “Lucky.” I don’t really want to say Lucky because Brock was indeed beating his ass and Mir even said it was the worst few minutes of his life. At the same time Mir was not just lucky, Brock fucked up and Mir capitalized. If a football team loses on a pick 6 then it doesn’t make them lucky, it makes them the winner. Mir was taking punishment but it if you understand JuJitsu then you understand you leave yourself open to create space – to create opportunities for submissions. Mir has no chance if he just tries to hold Brock’s posture because that would be futile and he would take punishment anyways. So, he has to take punishment to give punishment (or in this case submissions) the catch 22 is Brock has insane beat down power!

Mir is a FAG! He cried becuase he beat one guy.
Brock on the other hand can’t wait to eat him up and spit him out old country boy style.

Brock has just beat a legend and a very experienced veteran.

NOG as much as I love him pulled a Rampage and did not train properly while coaching TUF, he looked like crap physically and did not even look like he had any fire in his eyes.

Brock 2nd round stoppage over MIR, he will not tap this time he hates Mir that much.

Brock lesner has no business in the UFC he is a walking specimen of what steroids and human growth hormones do to you! I really dont see that cocky freak beating Frank!! Boo to Dana and the UFC for making a mockery of a legitimate sport. Always about the money i guess

Frank looked great but NOG looked like an old fighter with a LOT of miles on his body so I think you have to temper your assessment of Frank’s performance with his competition. Although the announcers said he was in shape, I think 250 is too heavy for him and he could be even better at about 235. He’ll have his hands full with Lesnar who is still young, strong as an ox and pretty damn quick for a big guy. Lesnar will be smarter too on the ground with MIR. He’d be smart to try and keep it standing and if they do go to the ground and he gets the dominant position, to back away and bring the fight back to their feet. I’m definitely looking forward to it. There’s no way Mir looks that good with standup against Lesnar.

Minatouro go knocked out. He had the look of shame all over him. It was bound to happen and I have never seen Mir look that crisp in my life. That kid can box! I loved it! Nog is on my totem pole of MMA idols and I have never known what to think of Mir till that fight. A tough year for me, watching a lot of my legends go down but they’re getting old. Sad,but true. They can’t compete with new elite. Frankly, dude this new crop is terrifying! haha But it happens, 30 plus fights take their toll and the way brazillians train it takes years off their fight span. Wanderlai has got a few fights in him I think I don’t see him contending, these guys have been tossing leather for a long time. I’m not sure about Wanderlai yet but Mr. Rodrigo should retire. MAD PROPS to Frank. Arrogance isn’t a real emotion in the ring. The most humble people get cocky and arrogant in the ring, I do it too, even when training, you kind of have to. It keeps you psyched up and pumped. Go Frank, And I hope you beats the crap out of Brock cause I hate that guy. It’s mostly just another sad fact that Freakish Pure Power can overcome experience and technique sometimes though it doesn’t happen to often. Brock is looking more like a MMArtist now though, sliming down not so much bulk getting more flexible. It work for him in the future but there will be a down period and I think Frank might be able to capitalize on it by the time they fight.

Sorry about the ramble. haha

GO FRANK!
DAMN YOU JACKSON! haha kidding Quinton can slug! I love it!
Also…Holy Crap Rashad Is Terrifying! haha

-Respect to all!

mir looked the best we have seen him since i can remember that is established
and to be frank nog did not that is established
to argue on the credability of the win based on weather the fighter was at there best or not is assinine a win is a win is a win
now for mir and lesnar i think lesnar has the advantage and here is why

in every fight he has faught in the ufc he has knocked a man down with punshes ok he is abit slopy but that counts nomatter what so his striking is defonatly there. his chin is unquestionable and here is why. anny one who followd wrestling when he was in knows about when he broke his neck landing head first off the top roaps whyle doing a backflip well he got up and finished the match. if you can take that and keep going moast punches are not so bad. every man can be knocked out ofcourse but i think lessnar has a granite chin. mir can take him in jujitsu yes but if you remember he tried an arm bar before and faild due to lesnars power and now after a year brock will be smart enough not to go to the ground. he will fight like randy i call it now and know it. his way of fighting will be exactly like randys exept insted of being the smallest guy in the division he will be the biggest strongest moast explosive man in the division fighting in a way that let a small man in his 40s beat much younger moore physicly domonant men.

i never say anny h=thing is 100 percent but styles make fights and when you put that with physicality i have big brock ahead 2-1

Brock has passed all illegal drug test in the NCAA, WWE, and UFC prove that he has taken them then you can call him all the names you want.

There are actually people with insane genetics I see them everyday , they don’t even take multi-vitamins and look like Greek Gods.

If you think you have to take juice to be big and muscular like Brock the you’re probably a hater, skinny or a fat slob who has never taken a punch in your life.

Brock will be the longest running HW Champ n UFC History.

One of the nicest guys I have ever met, right after the coutoure fight he was willing to shake hand with anyone even me.

I want to see Mir win the undisputed heavyweight championship, but I’m not sure Brock Lesnar deserves another shot at Mir yet. What has Lesnar done since losing to Mir? He beat crazy horse, and Coulture coming out of retirement-who cares? Mir knocked the crap out of Nogueira, nobody else has ever finished Nogueira. The only reason why Lesnar’s getting a rematch is because the UFC gave him a special just-for-Lesnar shot at the belt against a semi-retired Coulture. Even then, he only won because he caught Coulture in the back of the head with a punch.

Good Job Frank Mir. I’ve been a fan of Frank Mir since he defeated Tank Abbott. I hope he beats the crap out of Brock Lesnar. If he can beat NOG then he shows he can beat anybody when Frank is on his A game. If Brock Lesnar wins it will make the UFC look bad. I mean come on the guy has had only two matches in the UFC lost against Frank Mir won against Heath Herring and then the UFC says hey we will give you a title shot am I missing something no one has ever been 1-1 in the UFC and then get a title shot it makes the UFC look bad. Frank Beat Lesnar make the UFC look good again. Giving Brock a title shot against randy was a bad idea. Yeah lets put a muscle freak against an old guy. Don’t get me wrong I wanted Randy to win because Randy to me will always to a legend in the sport. I just think that they should have let brock win a couple of more fights before letting him get a title shot. I am pulling for Frank Mir in the fight against Lesnar.

I am sick of hearing about how Brock is this, and Brock is that..You know what, people on roids have veins sticking out everywhere like Batista in the WWE. Lesnar is legit. I know you people wanna hate him because he started off in fake fighting, but everyone starts somewhere. If you think he is a pussy, send Dana White a request and hop your ass in a cage with him..If you not willing to do that, shut your mouth punk!!!

nicely said very one mir looked like he was in the best shape yet! but Brock will eat mir up this time. Brock was a inexperienced fighter and even though he’s not 181-32 like randy or as someone said wandy hahahaha Brock has learned a lot since then and against the odds kicked the crap outta randy who said that he was in the best shape of his carrier as brock learns more he gets stronger and faster their is no stopping him he’s on a role now and that tank can not be beaten.

Okay…This will be a GREAT fight! But Brock and his trainers TAKE HEED! Brock not only LOOKS the part but has the Champion attitude all of which Mir could only DREAM of posessing! Mir is a cocky arrogant smart as hell punk i’d pay money to see him knocked on his ass AND have his loss rubbed in his face!
BROCK….WORK WITH THE BEST and ONLY THE BEST for your ground game! Ask NOG for help with your ground skill! He’d prolly help you! Mir is no chump and unless you get your ass kicked constantly on the ground for training and keep your striking skills pollished (with a buncha close range striking practice)
He’s gonna take you! PLEASE dont let Mir win!!!!!! You ULTIMATELY have all the potential over him…just hurry up and evolve in time damnit! And TRAIN SMART!!!!

Lesner will beat Mir, Mir almost lost the last one and managed to grab Lesners knee, but this time will be different. Lesner has obviously been working on his ground game and ju jitsu defense with the way he denied randy. lesner will win either ko or tko first or second round!

by joe o on Feb 2, 2009 5:02 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Albeit Mir’s striking looked world class in his win at UFC 92…I still believe Lesnar is going to own him in their rematch. Lesnar was owning Mir until he got caught in that knee bar in their 1st fight and anyone who watched that 1st fight knows what I’m talking about. Brock has passed every drug test he’s ever taken and he’s about the same size now as he was in college when he was dominating as a heavyweight for the golden gophers. The guys wears 3X gloves and hits like a freight train, pefect example of that is his 1st punch against Heath Herring in their fight.

Mir is going to try to use precision striking against Lesnar and use that to set up a sub on the ground. Brock will probably counter with his own power striking and take Mir down like he did in the 1st fight. Unless Mir is able to out finesse him with his striking or able to latch onto something, It’s going to be a ground and pound stoppage with the ref saving Mir from getting murdered. Mir can beat him but he’s gotta bring his A game otherwise it’s lights out courtesy of Lesnar’s fists
