Oh what a night! UFC 92 recap and final thoughts

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) tonight put a ribbon its 2008 fight season with "The Ultimate 2008," featuring another stacked offering with a title doubleheader atop the loaded main card.
It all took place from none other than Las Vegas, Nevada, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
The main card action began with a heavyweight bout between Cheick Kongo and Octagon newcomer Mustafa Al-Turk ... or that was the plan, anyway.
Al-Turk -- a former Cage Rage heavyweight champion -- pulled a card out of Kongo's playbook when he went up against Mirko Cro Cop, smashing his balls with an errant knee.
Karma is a bitch.
Kongo winced in pain and needed time to recover -- just enough to get his wind and return the favor shortly thereafter.
Al-Turk took a little breather of his own ... but not long enough.
Kongo stormed the Lebanese-born fighter and overwhelmed him with punches and vicious ground strikes, opening up a gash on Al-Turk and putting him on Queer Street.
It was a painful-looking stoppage. And it more than likely put the Parisian once again on the map as a division contender heading into 2009.
Just when we all thought the highly anticipated bout between CB Dolloway and Mike Massenzio was on deck, Wanderlei Silva's club music began blaring over the loudspeakers.
The third showdown between the Brazilian striker and former light heavyweight champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson was finally about to begin.
And it didn't last long.
Ringside announcer Joe Rogan must have been on a loop, saying ad nauseum that Jackson was a new fighter since his two losses to Silva under the Pride FC banner and a recent move to the Wolfslaire Academy in Manchester, England.
That may have been the understatement of 2008.
Jackson took the center of the Octagon from the get-go, peppering Silva with jabs and missing on a huge overhand right. The left, however, had different results ... HUGE results.
He planted a monster punch right on the kisser that put Silva out cold the moment the leather touched his jaw. Jackson pounced and gave him three more shots while he was literally twitching on the canvas just for good measure.
Referee Yves Lavigne peeled the werewolf off the comatose "Axe Murderer " and Jackson had his long awaited revenge. And it was a dish the was downright cold.
It was hard to tell if the extra blows were to send a message or just heat of the moment. Regardless, Dana White will more than likely be cutting a check to Jackson in the dressing room for "Knockout of the Night" despite Silva's pre-fight prediction.
Wow. Welcome back, Quinton. He more than likely exorcised countless demons with one crushing swoop.
"The Doberman" was let loose next, attempting to topple Massenzio once again -- the pair first met several years back on the junior college wrestling circuit with Dollaway getting the nod.
Massenzio entered the Octagon with what appeared to be an artificial leg. It had more tape on it than a ticker. But it didn't appear to affect his performance early in the first round. He buzzed the former contestant on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 7 while standing and nearly put him away with a tight guillotine from the bottom.
Dolloway survived and quickly reversed. He eventually secured full mount, which caused Massenzio to give up his back. Dolloway boxed the ears until the referee was forced to jump in and save a motionless Massenzio.
He immediately protested the stoppage and appeared to be fine, but he did nothing to show that he was okay with the Doberman mounted on his back.
Dollaway clearly sounded pleased with the win in the post-fight interview. It also sounded like he got kneed in the balls about a thousand times.
Whatever ... time for the top two title fights of the evening!
So much for the invincible aura of former Pride FC heavyweight champion and UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. The "mythological monster" was finished for the first time ever in his illustrious career by none other than Frank Mir.
Mir admitted in the post-fight interview after the improbable finish that he had never been more scared to enter the Octagon than he was tonight. It didn't show.
The former heavyweight champion knocked Nogueira down three times with crisp stand up, refusing to follow him to the canvas. That's quite a gameplan, considering that Mir like Nogueira is a Brazlian jiu-jitsu black belt.
No good deed in the UFC, however, goes unpunished. Now he gets the unenviable task of rematching current division behemoth, Brock Lesnar.
What a crazy turn of events -- most "experts" prior to November 15 would have said that Randy Couture (the man Lesnar defeated) and Nogueira were locks to meet in 2009 to unify the belts.
Not the case. Not even close. Welcome to mixed martial arts and Frank Mir 2.0.
How about an encore?
Rashad Evans became the third winner of TUF to become a UFC champion. "Sugar" and Forrest Griffin went toe-to-toe for two action-packed rounds and the fight was seemingly even heading into the third frame.
Evans dropped Griffin in the opening seconds and the XTreme Couture-trained fighter -- who appeared to recover -- could not escape the relentless (and brutal) ground and pound.
He sustained about 10 killer head bouncers that had his body flailing ... not tapping, according to Griffin after the fight.
It was a great performance by both fighters once again. But Evans was the better man tonight and continues the revolving door of champions in the 205-pound division.
Will it continue in 2009? Can "Rampage" reclaim his crown or will it be the winner of the bout between Thiago Silva and Lyoto Machida? Has Evans finally shucked the label as a showboater and earned the reputation as a finisher?
He should.
Nonetheless, buckle your seat belts and find out in the New Year. It promises to be yet another mind-boggling, bumpy and exciting fight season.
Happy New Year fight fans!

F*ck it! Can’t believe Sugar has the belt now. This sport really is unpredictable, what a great Xmas and New Year present! Hehe! Happy New Year maniacs! A nice way to end the year!
Then come 2009, cards are still gonna be stacked! If I die, what a waste of great MMA fights, LMAO!

I knew rampage was gonna win this time but daaaaaammmmnnnnnnn! Kevin called the upset with Mir/Nog, I agreed but didn’t think it would be such a 1sided beating. Forrest, he had the fight won if only he’d have some power! Y does he always get knocked down then flail his arms around like a clown? It almost looked exactly how he was finished in the jardine fight. Maybe we’ll see Page/Griffin 2? Good night of fights though!

i thought forrest had that won, another round or so an rashad could have been a bit low on gas, he did show class in defeat and i respect that but i’m still pretty bitter that he lost, can’t say i’m a rashad fan at all but i think a fight between him and rampage needs to happen now. I said from the start that if mir came in shape he would beat nog, i just didn’t expect him to finish it, i am fairly supprised that he admited after the fight that he went in scared and thinking he was going to loose, his boxing looked better than ever. the wandi-rampage fight didn’t go as long as i expected, i couldn’t pick a winner in that but i expect rampage getting his belt back soon. as for the mir-lesnar rematch i would have said lesnar but now i’m having second thoughts, mir isn’t exactly a small heavyweight and lesnars chin is still untested and mir’s boxing could be the thing to do it, to be honest i might probably lean towards mir in the rematch especially if he keeps this focus and training up, i think the rematch could happen soon aswell, mir didn’t take ANY punishment and lesnar could be ready to fight in a couple of months, the way i see it is the sooner the better for mir, it gives brock less time to work on sub deffense

Forrest looked like he was dizzy after that knockdown, that was really some poor BJ defense for a guy of Forrest’s caliber, I thought Rashad could put Forrest down with 1 of his punches but I didn’t think he was going to catch him more than once.
Rampage took it to Wanderlei like I thought he would, that was a brutal KO.
Mir looked really good for Mir… but Nog looked wornout, not at all like the Nog of old… I wanted to see Nog VS Couture, but not after that fight, Couture would eat him alive.
by THORAZINE on Dec 28, 2008 3:50 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Nog and Couture are about on the same level now. A week ago I would have thought it would be a one-sided beating in nog’s favor, but not now.
Forrest looked totally unprepared to be on his back, which is really stupid given Rashad’s wrestling credentials.
It looks like Wandi is entering Liddell-Land of declining legends that up-and-coming fighters make names on.

My official excuses list for why Nog lost:
1) Fucking herb dean(obviously)
2) 11 month layoff
3) Dana poisoned him to set up Mir-Lesnar II for UFC 100 i.e the real biggest PPV of all time.
In all seriousness though, that was not Nog in there. I just sat there in disbelief, ruined my whole night, didn’t even give a shit about Forrest-Hashad.
by NameNotRequired on Dec 28, 2008 12:06 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
What did Herb Dean have to do with the loss? Should he have let Frank hit him in the head a few more times?

wow i love how people want to take that win from mir and come out with the excuses. “that wasn’t the real nog wahhhhhhh” get over it. he went in there, Mir looked like a completely differently fighter and owned nog. deal with it.

Where you at john? I was with you calling the Rampage fight. I said a while back that Silva looks smaller and slower than his PRIDE days. I also disagreed with the people that thought Rampage looked scared and distant in his interviews. I just thought he looked like he was taking things more seriously. Overall a great night of fights. I was shocked at how Mir completely tooled Nog. I’m not going to complain, but did anyone else think that stoppage was a little quick? I don’t know, I was just thinking that we’ve seen Nog in that position about 10 times before only to pull something out of his ass. Man, that was probably the best event I’ve ever watched.

Great night of fights, but I lost all respect for Rampage tonight, reigning down blows on an unconscious opponent is just disrespectful. No place for that in the UFC, go fight Babalu… and Rashad was his usual self too, blowing kisses and dancing around. I hope he gets knocked out so bad!! Great talent on show tonight, just not the usual sportsmanship, it was a shame.

I was mad about Rampage landing shots on Wanderlei….especially after the ref was grabbing him, thats bullshit, but it was a great KO, but I will be so glad when Rampage does the same thing to Rashad. Rashad has no class, he thinks because he wears a nice suit hes something special. I cant wait to see him KO’d in brutal fashion by Rampage! I was suprised how easy Wanderlei went down, he took big blows from Chuck and wobbled but didnt go out. I guess he and Chuck are on the downside :( Oh well.. looks like Rampage will soon be my favorite fighter since Chuck, Randy and Wanderlei are all on there way out.
Props to Mir, I’m sure Nog could have kept getting his ass knocked down all night, but the ref did a good job by saying enough is enough and stopping it. Rogan was right when he said that Nog and Wanderlei have “high miles”…those guys have been fighitng for a LONG time.

wow man i must say that everyone i picked tonight LOST :( its ok still a great event… i was impressed by jackson he pushed the pace this time.. and as for MIr nog, i truely believe the wars that made nog such a legend in MMA is catching up to him- he’s still a hell of a fighter, but he seems slow over all, i think 2 more fights and he should really hang up the gloves(if he does that is). and i love how Mir called out Lesnar see the rage in lesnar’s face lol it was great- and as for Rashad evans can’t say he didn’t deserve it, he was losing first two rounds, and he came back and did what he always does and thats prove ppl wrong… quick questions
1) who you think is next in line for a title shot ??
2) Who does Rampage fight next?
3) why was chuck liddel so disapointed after silva got KO’d ?
by ricky on Dec 28, 2008 2:30 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
1- I think if Thiago Silva beats Machida, then he will get to fight for the title. However, if Machida wins, but it goes to an “elusive” decision, then maybe Rampage gets the nod.
2- Rampage may fight for the title next. If not the title, maybe a rematch against Forrest.
3- I think Chuck was mad because more than anything, he wants to rematch Rampage, and now it will not happen. Also, Wandy getting knocked out by Rampage may take some luster off of Chuck’s last win against Wandy. That may not be true to hardcore fans, but it is to “casual” fans.
by naturalshadow on Dec 28, 2008 3:03 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
1) i think rampage could fight for a title next, i’m not saying that he deserves it any more than the winner of silva-machida but he is more exciting and has more seilling power
2) probably a title shot, or maby shogun if he beats colman, i can’t see a rematch with forrest yet, i think forrest will have a bit of an easier match next instead of rampage
3) like naturalshadow said he wants a rematch with rampage, I think if wandi beat rampage that might of happened and it would have given chuck more confidence knowing he beat someone who can dominate rampage, i still think chucks a little scared of rampage, u saw him in the second fight, he just didn’t want to be there, i don’t even know if he has the power to put rampage away now
by hughes on Dec 28, 2008 10:49 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
oh your right i didn’t even think about Shogun seeing how rampage has been saying he wants to avenge his 2 worse loses 1 silva, 2 shogun. that would be a great match up..
by ricky on Dec 28, 2008 12:47 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Good point on Shogun Hughes. That is also a good possibility. Maybe they will give Forrest an easier fight as well, but eventually there will be a Forrest/Rampage 2. I think Rampage and Chuck are the 2 hardest hitting guys in 205 and maybe the UFC. I still think Chuck has the power to KO Rampage, but Rampage has a pretty strong chin. Rampage is very hard to finish. Chuck also has a stong chin, and until recently was also extremely difficult to finish. I am worried that Chuck’s chin may be starting to betray him, but I am hoping he still has it in him for a final run.

You always want the fighter that you beat to be invincible to everyone else.
by MrFyer on Dec 28, 2008 8:29 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Rampage did it with one punch, Chuck hit him with everything but the kitchen sink and even ended up being a bit of a pussy by resorting to takedowns. Rampages win completely blows Chucks win away.

I was thinking the same Rampage showed that Wandy(hate to say it) is done! And Chuck as well who couldn’t knockout both Jardine and Wandy who just suffered brutal ko losses.
Mir made my night didn’t call it but man did he look good and Brock vs Mir is sweet.
Forrest is a good guy but will never be champ again, I will say it one more time…Rashad is the Roy Jones of MMA….
2-3 not bad

and i have been saying all week that i was iffy on that bet~
cause i thought mir was looking really good..
i knew mir was going to give nog a run for his money
but i didnt think he was going to own him..
luckily for me i did not bet big on nog..

hashad helped me cash in big time..

I wouldn’t have believed it 2 years ago if someone told me Forrest and Rashad would be fighting for the belt, but anyone still doubting these 2 guys and don’t think they can hang with the top guys are in denial, because they ARE the top guys. He only won the fight on the ground because it went there. BIG PROPS TO RASHAD HE IS THE MAN!!!!!!

What was the bad fight in UFC 84 and in UFC 91?
by joe smith on Dec 28, 2008 12:59 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
91- wasn’t a fan of Kenny Florian Vs. Joe Stevenson. Not really domination, just a good choke and then an upset Stevenson. I didn’t think it was exciting in anyway.
84 – Lyoto vs. Machida
Lyoto running around 80% of the fight, then getting a few 30 second spurts solidifying him as the most boring fighter at 205 and the most likely to eek out a decision victory if ahead.
Hopefully he doesn’t get into a 5 rounder. If he wins the first 3 rounds we will have to watch him do cardio for 10 min in a title fight.
by Ben on Dec 28, 2008 1:05 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Lyoto isn’t boring sorry.
In my opinion Rampage is going to fight Forrest again and if Lyoto wins he’s getting the title shot.

Great fights! The only fight I got right was the Kongo fight. I love Wandi, but he isn’t half of what he was in pride, and I hate to say that. Nog didn’t look good either, very slow and stiff. My hat is off for Rashad, I thought Forrest would find a way to out work him, but again I was wrong!
Who does Rashad fight next? He just has a very different style than most other LHW’s and it’s giving everyone problems. Maybe Rua or Thiago Silva or even Machida? The fight I would love to see would be Rashad against Anderson Silva. That would be a great fight I think but we will never see.
Mir looked awesome, that right upper cut landed at least 7 or 8 times. It will be interesting to see how Brock prepares for that next fight, he’s gonna have his hands full!
Great card with great fights! Bravo to Dana and the UFC for finishing of a great year with a Bang! Again, all the fighters show real class, which makes this so different than boxing or most other sports. The respect the guys have for one another in winning and losing is great to see!

I swear alotta posters on this site never seriously played any competitive sports. Taunting and all other antics are the norm. Especially in middle of a hotly contested match. They should try taking thier panties off and trading in their mini-skirts for a pair of mens jeans. Buncha Sally’s LOL.

Come on the d!ick kiss and a punch that landed was awesome. It would have been bad if he lost but he didn’t. Great night of fights.
Didn’t it look like CB tapped for a second when he was almost submitted?

Great card! In the top 2 cards of the year with the Penn/Sherk card a few months back as the best of the year!! Still would have liked to see the Okami fight with the extra 20 min left on PPV that I paid for!!

fair play to mir, anyone that says nog wasnt himself really need to admit that mir out classed him! evans always improving, but for some reason i dont see the belt staying on him long, if anybody, the lhw division is crazy! rampage looked amazing, perhaps the 3 punches on the ground were excessive tho! cb looked good, sounded gay but showed good composure after getting rocked! kongo looked class

Excelent Night
now… Minotauro vs. Randy at UFC 99
Rampage vs. Evans at UFC 100
Mir vs. Lesnar UFC 100…
And in any other event please put Antoni Hardonk against Pat Barry!!!
What next for Griffin and Wandy? Faces each other, I don’t think so. I think one of them is going to face Thiago/Machida Loser and, maybe, Coleman/Shogun Winner??? (Shogun rematch with FOrrest)

forrest vs chuck
w.silva vs vera
rampage vs rashad
lyoto/t.silva vs jardine
nog vs randy
mir vs lesnar both will be at ufc 100 and maybe some of the 205 fights
and a probable matt hammil getting something big in 2009
by randy murders on Dec 28, 2008 2:45 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think Chuck will probably get his rematch with Jardine next. Chuck usually gets what he wants, and now that Evans is the champ, supposedly Jardine will not fight him. On top of that, Jardine is too inconsistent to say much against the rematch.

mir vs lesnar at 100 is way to long away….. Mir probably wouldn’t mind fight lesnar at say 98….. or evan sooner… maybe dana throws that fight at 95 and puts that card back on PPV….. but no way we have to wait to see that at 100….. same with rashad he doesn’t want to wait till the summer to defend expect them both to fight before 100, most likely case is St. peirre and BJ penn both fighting at 100…. if GSP wins i would say GSP vs Silva and BJ vs Florian at 100 and a bunch of sick other fights….. like swick vs alves…..

3:52 mark of round one, tapped twice. At least it wasn’t as obvious as the TUF finale. He needs to learn not to think to tap so quick if he can get out of the submissions.

Finally found someone else that thought they saw him tap. Looked exactly like his other “I didnt taps”. He tapped quickly ONE TIME on Mike M’s side.
For more proof that I think he did tap was his answer when Rogan interviewed him.
Joe says to Douchebag, how close were you to being finished in the guillotine??? CB says…..“I dont remember”. That SOB ALREADY had an excuse ready.
Anyhow in CB’s world he is allowed to tap once and change his mind.
Total BS. I been looking so forward to finding that fight again today….and/or seeing gif of him tapping
by fightfan on Dec 28, 2008 8:00 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Here’s the thing. We saw CB tap and CB knew he tapped but if the ref does not catch it then who is really at fault???
What does not set well is the after fight comments made with Joe Rogan. CB is a “puss” for lack of humility on a fight that should have ended with him the loser. The “I didn’t know or I didn’t tap” is now old.
I am hopeful that Dana did see the tap and will punish CB by making him wait or better…put him up against someone who will beat the crap out of him. I want to see an “obvious” tap that even CB is aware of.

I’d like to see Anderson Silva vs Rashad at some point. If Silva really plans to retire in the next couple years, given him a LHW contender and then a title shot and let’s see if he can hold both titles. This is, of course, assuming Machida doesn’t become champ before that.

by jace on Dec 28, 2008 12:58 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I cant stand when Rashad acts cocky. It started way back in TUF, when he would dance around during a fight.
Last night was the worst….when Forrest landed a few nice punches in the 2nd and had Rashad against the fence. Rashad danced around, dropped his hands completely and grabbed his crotch and smiled with the “suck my d***” motion. I was PRAYING that Forrest would of went apeshit on him and KTFO Rashad then
What an asshole. He tried so hard NOT to be the asshole that he CAN be…..btu ended up doing something only a douchebag would do
by fightfan on Dec 28, 2008 8:05 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Forrest should have given him a knee to the package after that and taken the warning. And Forrest has to absolutely hate the Jackson camp now. First Jardine makes him cry, then Rashad takes his title.

What’s the matter, your brittle ego can’t hold up to someone with a firm self-belief? Is it a little too intimidating for you? These guys are having a fight in the middle of that cage, not a lesson in etiquette. There’s sooooo much more to complain about than someones show boating. I played Football & Soccer (soccer, can you tell I’m an american LOL). I had close friends in Baseball and Basketball too. Everything you’re complaining about is standard fare in physically competitive sports. C’mon guys can we please Man-Up here?
by Machine on Dec 28, 2008 11:37 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I’m with you Machine. Look at ANY sport and you see showboating and trash talking. I think it’s great that Rashad dances around and enjoys himself out there. If everyone acted the same way it would be boring. I was at the bar, and when Rashad did the kissing motion it got louder than it had been all night. It’s good for the game. I guess none of the people complaining ever watch an NFL game. There’s more trash talking after EVERY play then I’ve ever seen Rashad do. It’s competitive sports, of course people are going to get fired up and talk some smack.
by Diceman on Dec 28, 2008 4:41 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Diceman: Thanks for stepping in and pointing that out because it’s true. I don’t know why people act like crazy things don’t happen when emotions get fired up. Like you said, it’s good for the “game” and if everyone acted all non-confrontational things would get a little bland. Variety is the spice of life, right? I hope Rashad never changes his showboating because its truly harmless and I enjoy it. Plus, he’s always respectful towards those that deserve it after the fight.

jace: “i believe the winner of the silva-machida fight would kick his black a**..”…..
We all know Rashad is black so for you to point that out in your post is redundant. Regardless of the color of your own skin jace, your statement wreaks of racism. What does his skin color have to do with anything at all?
Dont like him? Thats perfectly OK but think about what you say before you post it. Not only do you make yourself look foolish but you may alienate people that could potentially become an ally down the road.
by Machine on Dec 28, 2008 11:16 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Machine, calm down lol. Dont get mad because 70% of people HATE Rashad. Its obvious that he is hated, he always gets boo’d like when he fought Chuck, and despite him KOing Chuck, he still gets boo’d agaonst Forrest and only 30% of people thought he would win. And out of those 30%, I bet at least half dont care for him…..All of this leads up to Rashad’s antics and showboating…he is like a black Tito…hes annoying. Yes, there is alot of trash talk in sports and stupid antics and what not, but no one in sports likes the poeple who do stupid crap like that. It makes you look unconfident to have to tlak trash and “grab your nuts” like Rashad did. Its ok though, because it will make it THAT MUCH SWEETER when Rampage knocks his ass out!

On Rashad… he is super dangerous.
But I also think that Lyoto or Silva would tear him apart. Hopefully the winner doesn’t fight him.
I would like to see Rashad knock out another striker before that happens. Rashad is actually pretty good, I called him to win this one.
Rashad – Speed + Power = dangerous
Forrest – Heart + Technique = always win unless knocked out

WHOOO!. AWESOME NIGHT OF FIGHTS!. even though 2 of my faves went down (wand and forrest) i dont feel disappointed at all. props to rampage, it seemed like his move to wolfslair really did make the difference. that ko was brutal, wandi’s leg was quivering. i don’t think wandi’s through yet, i just think he needs to move down to 185, like ive thought for a long while. his arms are just too short and he’s too small for today’s lhw. damn! i hated to see forrest lose, but rashad is a stud. forrest was dominating until sugar caught him. if forrest had any kind of ko power and didn’t have such a suspect chin, he’d be unstoppable, but he does’nt. i think because of those weaknesses, forrest is really going to have an up and down career in the ufc, but he will always be entertaining. i say lets see the shogun/forrest rematch and get that cleared away and hope shogun is healthy (cough, cough,) HOLLA OUT TO MY BOY JV. you called mir as the winner the whole time, and never wavered. tonight proved that the old frank mir is back and that the old frank mir could hang with anyone pride or the ufc. as a matter of fact, i think he is the new and and improved frank mir. cant wait to see him brock get it on. im leaning slightly towards brockzilla in that one, but mir is gonna be tough. now would be a good time to have the long awaited randy/nog fight. im not sure who i think should get the next crack at rashad, lyoto,if he wins or rampage. i kinda think rampage deserves it a little more. i can see the lhw belt changing hands qutie a few times unless machida wins it. if lyoto wins the lhw title, i can see him making a long run as the champ. hell who knows, maybe rashad will make a long run. the lhw division is so deep. mir stopped nog! unbelievable. once again, awesome night of fights

Expect the unexpected I guess. Was that Nog, or a wax dummy? The extra 15 pds. of fat was not a good sign, and a fit, focused Frank Mir capitalized. Mir looked great for sure, but it was also a limp showing by Nog.
Rashad just continues to win, doubters (including myself) be damned. Looking ahead, Rampage makes the most sense to face Rashad, but the winner of Machida/TSilva should be guarenteed a shot after Rashad’s 1st defense. As for Forrest, there will be plenty of interesting opponents for his next fight.

If Fedor and anyone in the world t hinks hes the best then he needs to fight the UFc best then well talk, Rashad still unbeaten awesome, liddell shouldn’t feel so bad, sucks about wanderlai, to many KO like Rogan said, could be the end?? Hopefully not, and Mir holy what a performance and he didn’t even use his ground, so many people jump on the band wagon and and cheer for their fav fighter even if there is no chance they will win, in the octagon anything can happen , Lesnar is done next fight, Mir will win , I don’t care what anyone says, Mir already fought him, knows what hes like, and will be prepared for him but I could be wrong like I was in the Forrest and Rashad fight

Damn did Mir, Rampage and Evans look good tonight or WHAT, boys?!!!
I called all three fights plus the others, made some bank tonight, god it feels good!!!
I just love what Mir put on display tonight. He worked the sh*t out of Nog who looked half of what he’s been but still, to get worked like that was freaking impressive, you can’t deny that. First stoppage of his career. That speaks volumes to how dangerous Mir is. Watch out for my boy Frank Mir, that’s all I can say. If he beats Lesnar again which I am putting money on right now, he in my opinion, is No. 2 HW in the world depending on what happens the 24th over in Affliction.
And then Quinton, what can you say? Again, just I told you so. Rampage is the best LHW in the World. Has the best striking, the most power, great conditioning and overwhelming strength/wrestling. Can’t wait to see him beat the crap out of Rashad and put the first blemish on his record.

was liddell expecting to fight rampage if he lost, was that why he was upset??
by jslim on Dec 28, 2008 1:14 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
probably cuz rampage knocked chuck out, but chuck beat wanderlei. a win by wanderlei would have probably put liddell as one of the top contenders for a title shot (along with rampage of course).
and what was this….wnaderlei’s 6th loss in 11 fights? not too good, though cuz of his reputation he will probably still be a big draw for a few more fights. and now that forrest lost, i’d love to see those two fight. but if it isn’t for a belt, i doubt they’d fight.

then again, since evans knocked liddell out, i don’t know. chuck is probably pretty far down on the totem pole right now. he needed silva to beat rampage.

as for rampage vs. wand III, it really went the way i thought it would, page’s boxing has gotten too tight for wand’s windmill striking

Sidenote- Kongo/Al-Turk stoppage- ref should have stopped it WAY sooner. Anyone else think so?
2nd side note- Who’s next for Evans? Evans vs Rampage?

I agree. It has to be Evans v Rampage next. With Machida/Silva being the follwing no.1 contender fight.
Mir completely won me over. And from that showing, I see him beating Lesnar again…his boxing was awesome, and obviously his ground game is miles above Brocks. Mir is next (official) UFC HW champ.

Chuck has lost 3 of his last 4 with two losses by highlight reel KO. The only way he sniffs the title again is if it ends up in the hands of someone who has the perfect style to get KO’d by Chuck and Dana decides to jump him over all the contenders who are ahead of him in line for a title shot.

The fights were surprising tonight. I had Rampage and Rashad winning, just not in the manner they won. Congrats to Rashad and Frank on winning the titles. Forrest was gracious in the postfight interview, I laughed when he said it was just Rashad’s punches that had his body in motion. I think it’s going to be very hard for anyone to take that title from Evans.
I wasn’t a fan of Frank’s before tonight, but it was great seeing him show emotion—and tell Brock he had his belt. That rematch should be great and I’m looking forward to seeing it.

Yeah, I just love the outcome of tonight. All you Rashad haters go and cry somewhere like little girls. Whether you like it or not he is gonna keep that belt for a while unless Rampage reclaims it, other wise I do not see any other opponent to take the belt from Rashad. Forrest is just sucks, hope Chuck gets to whip that ass some day. And Wandy better got take a hike, glad Rampage put a stop to his ugly face, good to see his leg quiver after He got KTFO. I would say that Rampage should have murdered his ass, but I would not wish death on nobody.

I am soo surprised by the Frank Mir that entered the cage tonight, I thought for sure Nog would out-box him and possibly even TKO/KO Mir, but Jesus!! Who would have thought that Mir would be the person to stop Nog before the bell?? That said, Nog didn’t look all that great, but still, it was Nog. Rampage looked great tonight, Wanderlei has been on a bit of a slide, but my gut was saying he was going to win (his entrance to Sandstorm almost assured it IMO).

What surprises me is so many thought Nog would destroy Mir. Mir has heavy hands and it was obvious that he was getting back to his old self. Now his old self had shitty cardio, but he never needed cardio, because he was destroying guys quickly. Mir is an extremely intelliget guy so it was very unlikely he would come out of shape to face a guy like Nog. You could see the fire in Mir’s eye over the past few months, he was more serious than he has ever been.Plus Mir’s camp was saying he was in unbelievable shape. When I saw the videos of Mir’s training, there was no doubt in my mind that his speed would be to much for a slow sluggish Nog.With all that said, I’m still surprised how bad he owed him. Looks like a lot of guys on here were right when they said Mir isn’t on Nog’s level, Mir is on a WAY higher level. Nog looked like an amature.

It might be time for me to hang it up as an MMA fan. Obviously thats not going to happen, but this was the most depressing for me of any payperview I’ve seen. It disturbs me to see Wandy get knocked out so badly. I’m not terribly surprised, just upset. The thing that has me reeling, is that Nog looked absolutely outclassed by Frank Mir. I’m still not sold on his cardio, but Mir put on an amazing performance. So thats two of this old Pride fans favorite fighters looking absolutely, ridiculously horrible.
As far as Rashad/Griffin goes, I had no preference on the outcome of that fight. That is, until the 2nd round when Rashad reminded me why I used to detest him so much as a fighter. Dropping your hands and grabbing your balls in the middle of a fight that you’re not winning is one of the most classless and immature things you can do. That kind of showboating is exactly what is wrong with professional sports today. Rashad is no better than Terrell Owens, Barry Bonds, or Manny Ramirez. I hope he gets KTFO’d in his next fight.

Awesome night of fights!! What a way to end the New Year!!
1rst off…Rampage proves to all the people that he has improved and he is a different fighter than he was 4 years ago. if he comes in 100% and trains hard he is unstoppable. I hope he continues to work with that nutritionist. Keep it up Page. HOWWLLLL!!!!!! Wandy is a warrior but after being KO’d 3 of his last 4 fights could be a time to surrender the 205 division and drop down to 185.
MIR was incredible. I was going for NOG all the way but when I saw his bulging gut I was concerned. When he dropped twice in the 1rst round I got worried but then, hey It’s NOG he will prevail but it didn’t seem to happen from the Former Pride and UFC champ. I felt so bad for him when they showed his face after the fight. He was so disappointed and his eyes began to tear up. He will be back because he is Minatauro. Mir looked great on his feet and his boxing looked real swift and crisp. He deserved the win and was classy after the fight.
Rashad is a beast. He moves in and out so quick that it tends to throw people off. In my opinion he is a force to be reckon with. If he can work submissions he will unstoppable. Forrest did a good job in the beginning but once Evans applied the ground and pound it reminded me of when Jardine KO’d Forrest. Since they trained together maybe JArdine gave him some tips. Forrest is will be back in always a stud in and outside the ring but he needs to get some Knockout power.
I think Lyoto and Silva should only get the next shot for the title if they win decisively like a KO or submission. Right now I say Rampage should get it since he just KO’d Silva in 2 minutes. If Lyoto dances for the 3 rounds and beats Thiago then imagine him and Rashad. It will be like a square dance around the octagon. I want to see either Thiago Silva or Rampage get the next shot and Lyoto only if he KO’s somebody. He is a good fighter but he doesn’t get my blood pumping.

I bet there are a lot of chins still dragging on the floor with a stunned look on their face. Something Fedor couldn’t do, Mir did with easy. Mir took his own advice and threw punches in 3’s and it worked perfectly. He connected with at least 2 of them every time. Now I have to listen to the same guys say Nog will kill Randy. That’s not going to happen either. Randy will pick Nog apart on the feet. I just hope there isn’t a bunch of excuses, because Mir dominated from bell to KTFO. Mir stepped his game up,WAY up.

I don’t know if Mir is that confident about Brock. I’m sure he must know without the ref stopping the fight it could have been a short night for him. Brock has dropped everyone he has fought with one punch and I think Mir is to smart to not realize how much of a threat he really is. I think his after fight antics were more to hype up the fight. Tough one to call that’s for sure. Sometimes cockiness is a sign of lack of confidence.

yah yah, great night of fights i guess. i am alittle bitter that not only wandy lost, but griffin lost as well. from a dramatic standpoint, it was absolutely amazing and even a little inspiring. to see all the storybook endings culminate in the final card of 08 was a night to behold. but at times i felt underwhelmed as a hyped fight such as wandi/rampage ended abruptly and than on to an undercard. dont get me wrong, a night without any submissions is a surefire sign of a good card. i opersonally was looking forward to an all out war with wandi\rampage and griffin\evans. i fully understand that even the most evenly matched fights can end in a flash, i guess ijust wasnt expecting it to happen tonight.
i dont like evans plai and simple. he seems to be a talented athlete who handles himself very unprofessionally and insecurely. i cant remeber the last lhwc to display the unentertaining and low class antics rashad pulls off in the octogan. hopefully in the future he can separate himself from champs like lesnar who showboat for no good reason.
poor liddell, he was on the verge of becoming at least acutely involved in the lhw picture again when rampage took it away with one punch which certainly reminded liddell of an indentical punch that proved to end chucks glory days in the ufc. why is anyone surprised he looked crushed folling the turn of events. although im an absolutely huge fan of chuck it proves to be simply another nail in the coffin on an illustrious career. i predict a couple money fights are left than maybe commentating once rogan smokes himself retarded??
cb dolloway?? like how a woman has an orgasm…….who really cares?
mir? friggin amazing!! im just glad i dont bet on this stuff after watching that fight!!! WOW. i think the timing of the fight will impact the unification bout immensely. mir cannuetralize brocks ground game and than some, butif lesnar is given time to refine his sub defense and ground game, it could turn against mir.the reason i mention this is the impending summer blocbuster ufc 100. what better way to stack it than with this fight?? however, if the ufc decides thats far too long to wait for that date than we might see this fight sooner rather than later, especially considering both mir and lesnar emerged unscathed from their respective recent battles. if this fight is hurried along i definetly give mir an edge.
as for wandy, i believe hes best suited for mw. his reach is becoming an issue aas he has to attack first and woory about counterpunching after the fact. tonight was a perfect example. he dominated in pride, but the fallout of the new world of mma has left wandi behind. as with chuck, hes still a bankable fighter for now, but his best days are way far behind him. hes perfect for mw since hes an instant draw for spider assuming spider isnt busy with the other ten superfights he has on the backburner while defending the mw belt. that being said, wandy cant really even count on a match with anderson . instead he has to grab a number and get in line. kind of sad to see the axe murderer in this position really.
and finally forrest. hes going to have to lose a few fights consecutively to fall from the grace of dana white. and given his never say die attitude which was slightly absent tonight, i dont expect forest to disappear anytime soon. actions speak louder than words, and although im sure it hurt forrest huge tonight, im sure hes ready to learn and evolve an d work his way bak up to contention, although i have serious doubts as to whether hell be champ again.
nonetheless, i can say it wasnt the greatest card ever, but it clearly has me talikng!!!

I couldn’t believe how terrible Nog’s stand up game was last night. Where the hell was Stankie? Mir kept on throwing the same punch combos every time and Nog’s dumb-ass never caught on. Mir threw a Left Jab-Right Upper-Cut which landed right on the button at least for times and he also threw a Left Jab-Straight Right-Left Jab-Straight Right. Stankie should beat Nog like an unwanted stepchild after that performance. I was hoping Nog would finally catch on to Mir’s repetitive combos, especially that Left Jab-Right Uppercut. If he would have stepped left when Mir threw that left jab, he could have a left hook to counter Mir’s right uppercut and KTFO’d him. Hopefully Nog gets back into the cage in a couple of months and can redeem that loss.

Mirs heavy hands ? lol… Nog was knocked down 2 times by simple straight punches….The man took Fedors best shots, hundreds of them, he was also blasted straight in the head by one of the worlds hardest kickers, and you call it Mirs heavy hands. Nog needs to retire, his wars have caught up to him. His last fight in Pride should of been his last, he can no longer take a shots like before and that effect is irreversable. Nog has fought wars in the ring, he is the ali of the sport the rrocky balboa of mma. Theres a cost to those beating hes weathered and the cost his him looking to retire at a young age. Look at it this way, watch the fedor nog fights, watch the nog crocop fight, even watch the first 2 fights nog had with herring, then look at nogs performance since day 1 of being in the ufc, he nearly lost to herring somone he dominated before, he took shots that both sylva and mir in their lifetime will never be able to throw and then you say nog couldnt handle mirs bombs ?? lol Thats close to matching up Holyfield with ali and saying the same thing, when fact is i could probrobly daze nog nowadays. Nog should retire now , he should of a few fights ago he is nowhere near the fighter he used to be. And if the future UFC champion ( mir or lesnar ) ever meet Fedor youll see for yourself what Nog went through because they wont even see round 3 with Fedor and thats in 5 min rounds, not the classic 15 min pride rounds.

The problem with Silva is that he hasent changed a damn thing when it comes to his fighting style.
Quionton on the other hand, He has changed alot, his strikings is so much better than before, And his strikings are one a kind.
Take Chuck for example, He has the same style everytime he fights. Sooner or later your style is gonna be visible to the apponent and that means your going down.
Back to Silva – Rampage
Rampage knew how Silva would come after him, And he planned that pounch with his trainers before knocking out Silva.
I lost some money on all 3 matches, But thats how life is, Sometimes you win, Sometimes you lose.

Rashad has been on the longest lucky streak I’ve ever seen.
It’s not that he’s a bad fighter, far from it – but he’s just not THAT GOOD. This is the guy who won split decisions over Brad Imes and Sam Hoger, barely got a draw vs. Tito Ortiz, and got a split decision win over Bisping that he IMO didn’t really deserve. (guess that was karma, Bisping had it coming after his “win” over Hamill)
That’s 4 fights out of his 9 in the UFC where he only barely squeaked by.
He’s definitely gotten much better since his TUF days, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s nowhere near as good as the raw numbers – 8-0-1 in the UFC – make him look.

Did you say he aint that good ?
I think you should go back and watch ufc 92 and the fight when he Knocked out Chuck.
This guy (Rashad) Is for real.

I read that you got rich, how rich did you get?
Thankfully Rampage slaughtered him like an infant thrown into the lions den.

Wow, looks like my picks were correct. And all this time all of the “regs” on this site were telling me I was an “idiot” and a “noob” when I commented on them.
It must suck to spend as much time posting about something as you guys do and not really know that much about it. The idiot was right.

Where are the 10 million Wandy ass-lickers who said he was gonna kill rampage, AGAIN. You must be asleep along with your hero. wake up, its time for you to post EXCUSES. I respect all fighters for just stepping in the cage, and i hate to make fun of people, but after the years of shit wanderlei and his ass-lickers talked about rampage. HoooooooWWWWWlllll. those “extra” punches were not extra. It is NOT a fighters job to end a fight, it is a referee’s job. Yves stepped in, rampage stopped (he shouldnt have). Peace. All praise to the most high. (…howls like a were-wolf).

I am the one who said Silva would kill Rampage, But It dident turn out the way I wannet it to be.
Well, I lost some money on my bets, But who cares ? My life dident end because of that.
Sometime you win and sometimes you lose, And in a fight anything can happen.
Atleast im being a man and saying what I said about Rampage vs Silva.
I also said Nog would win over Mir, I was wrong about that.
I said Forrest would over Rashad, I was wrong about that too.

By the way, RAMPAGE MORE THAT EARNED an IMMEDIATE title shot. He earned it with 1 (5 actually lol) punch.

Forrest slipped up bad. He by far is the better fighter just not the luckiest. I agree when people say machida would destroy rashad. But Rashad would beat thiago and Rampage.
I see Liddell vs Forrest…
Rampage looked stooked, and Wandy looked……… Scared, timid.
Rampage vs Jardine???
Wandy vs Vera….
Cb pulled that one out of his butt.
I think he is not destined for anything close to looking at a title, his striking was non-existant.
Mir was fantastic and relaxed, Lesnar should be fearful.
Until last night I thought Mir just got lucky vs Brock… It might have been the case but not now….
Nog looked exhausted and looked almost unwilling to throw more than one punch at a time. Nog vs Randy then retire… He has his money, his gym. Hes a legend and should quit while hes ahead.
Kongo looked like a very polished and deliberate fighter. But he would stand no chance vs MIR or Lesnar. I would throw him another match the Japaneese judo guy maybe…

Nogueira should never be allowed to fight again! all the hw’s fighting on the card would have won over Nogueira that was the worst and most shocking performance ever.. It’s over! he must have had a concussion going into the fight b/c he just stood right infront of him and ate Mir’s punches

What a great card! I was wrong on almost all of them and still finished 127th out of over 23,000 on UFC.com’s fantasy. Out of the three main fights, the only one I got right was Rashad, and only about 30% picked him to win. Before the fight, I couldn’t see how Mir would beat Nog. I thought Nog had better boxing and at least as good jits. Nog said himself that he was faster and stronger. Man, was he wrong. Mir said he was the better athlete, I don’t know about that, but he was certainly a better boxer and much quicker. If Mir fights like that, he’s got a good shot of beating Brock for the second time. If his boxing diminishes then he better hope he can catch Brock in something before Brock TKO’s him. Rampage looked like the same Rampage that beat Lidell. If both Rampage and Rashad are ready to go, they should fight soon. If one of them isn’t, then I’d like to see Rampage fight Shogun after Coleman does, and I’d like to see Rashad fight the winner of Lyoto vs. Thiago. If Thiago wins, I think it would be fun to see him fight Anderson Silva. 2009 is shaping up to probably be the best year of fights, yet. With Nog and Couture being put out to pasture, the UFC is proving that it’s reloading with younger, better fighters than the old school Tim Sylvias and Andre Arlovskis. I hope AA proves me wrong, but I think Fedor is going to expose him and prove that he is no longer the fighter he used to be before big Timmy beat him twice. 2009 would be the perfect year, in my opinion, for the UFC to start a 225 lb. Middle Heavyweight Division. They could have Kongo vs. Vera for the title. There’s plenty of guys who have trouble cutting to LHW, but have no business getting in the octagon with the likes of Brock, Shane and Cain… the new breed of HWs.

Every fighter I hoped would win lost except for Rich Franklin’s beeotch, Matt Hammill. I am now convinced that MMA is anyone’s game on any night. Every fight was great. I just wish Rashad and Mir weren’t such a$$es.

Machida vs rashad is my guess
Or rampage vs machida
They keep making machida wait
But who can expect anything from machida
I think both men could shock the world lol
Imo machida wins
I prediced all fights right but I had them won by decision, tho I wanted silva and forest win
No fight was wow last night
Best fight was prob the wessel hardonk fight

It’s a very sad day for MMA fans from Brazil. Wand and Minotauro are probably the two biggest names of brazilian MMA and they both lost in devastating fashion, especially Big Nog. He looked fat, slow, with no head movement. Every combinaton thrown by Mir connected. Minotauro’s chin is not the same, he was knocked down six times in three fights in the UFC. Something has to change immediatelly, because I would hate to see Minotauro becomng another Cro Cop or Chuck Liddell. Winning or losing he’s not the same anymore. It just takes one punch to get him down, what’s up with that. He maybe needs to change his training camp because obviously hes lacking in boxing, strenght and conditionig and especially in wrestling. He’s a freakin’ great ground fighter and he, for some reason, doesn’t use it anymore. Mir gassed after the first round, and Minotauro still didn’t try to push the pace. That’s the worst day for me as a MMA fan

I can’t believe nog is only 32 I’m 37 and he looks at least 10 years older than me, does anyone else notice that? Good fights, strange that there was no submissions though.

Were you crushed by a truck as a kid? have you been hit by many metaphorical trucks since?… there’s your explanation…
Congrats to Mir, he looked great, would have liked to see Herb Dean let the fight go a few more seconds… Nog’s overall position was getting better, between two strikes from Mir, Nog moved to half guard then looked like he was about to pull guard when Herb jumped in… still too many unanswered strikes I suppose but considering the fighter I would have liked to have seen it go a bit longer. That’s Herb Dean’s rep though…
All that I’ve been thinking since though is that if Mir/Lesnar 1 was called that quickly (after the knockdown) Mir wouldn’t have had time to recover and win. I know it’s the commissions call but bad Referee choice for that fight.

Rashasd has had an easy road to the title, its a fucken joke. He beat drawed tito aging has been, decision’d Bisbing unproven middleweight, koed liddell aging has been, tko’ed forrest no power not that good. With how stacked that divison is it’s amazing how he keeps avoiding the tough competiton. Give him Hendo, Rampage, Machida, A.Silva, T.Silva, W.Silva, Franklin or any submission guy, has he ever fought a submission expert I can’t think of 1. UFC stop protecting this bum!
by guy on Dec 28, 2008 3:36 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
His camp is full of them, not to mention that his head coach being a BJJ black belt has probably rolled with him a time or two.. hundred. I don’t even like Rashad very much, but I wouldn’t bet against him counting on him having weak submission defense. Greg Jackson wouldn’t allow that shit. He felt that triangle coming last night (as weak as it may have been…) and defended the sweep from the kimura as well as the arm lock itself. He tried to advance his position every time Forrest opened his guard, that’s not an unskilled ground fighter. But saying all this, let’s see someone put him on his back… then we can say for certain.
Rashad has been really good about taking guys off their game plans… Chuck was winning and then Rashad got Chuck to chase him and Rashad put him to sleep… he did the same thing to Forrest nearing the end of the 2nd (i think it was) after Forrest had been picking him apart. Luckily Forrest made it out of the round but continued those habits into the 3rd, and ended up having Rashad’s fist for dinner, and breakfast. you have to give Rashad credit because he’s winning the psychological match and drawing his opponents in for the kill. He’s a cunning hunter, must watch a lot of discovery channel.
by fleet on Dec 28, 2008 10:11 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Rashad’s gameplan is so simple to disect….move around alot, move backwards, make some stupid gestures to piss off your opponents, swing crazily with full power in an attempt to get a KO. Why is it that no one can figure this out?!?!?
Someone needs to stall against Rashad and force Rashad to take the center of the Octagon and let him be the one that the spotlight is on so it will force him to engage under pressure when he doesn’t want to. That or osmeone like Rampage or Henderson with a chin and real KO power can rush him and knock his block off in the exchange.

Has Evans finally shucked the label as a showboater and earned the reputation as a finisher?
Both? I mean, the whole kissing your hand and then grabbing your junk constitutes as showboating right? ;)
