MMMmania.com open thread and discussion

It's Christmas Eve, which means that all of the MMAmania.com crew has gone AWOL. Thanks, guys. I'll also be taking time to today to spend with friends and family ... I suggest you all do the same.

For those stuck at work and/or behind computer desks, we don't want you to feel abandoned on the holidays. So go "Elf Yourself!." Best MMA-related submission in the comments section below wins a soon to be determined prize.

Feel free to also discuss whatever MMA-related news and notes you discover in the comments section below. Check back early and often ... there's no telling when the Egg Nog will run dry and we'll resume blogging at our usual frenetic pace.

Happy holidays, maniacs. Big happenings on the horizon for the site in 2009. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, be safe and be merry.

Recent Fedor interview (interesting):

Source of un-translated interview http://a2k.org.ua/index.php?option=com_ … 6&Itemid=2

Source or translated interview http://www.themmanews.com/?p=2410

Fedor Emelianenko recently did an interview(see link to Russian version here) and took time to talk about his training and his recent loss at the World Sambo Championships. Here’s the translation:

Did you like Thailand in general?
I’m not going back there again! (laughs) When you look at Bangkok: all you see is bars, sex-tourism prospers, alot of prostitutes and transvestites. It only disgusted me as an orthodox man.

Did you like to act in a movie?
To be honest, filming was tough for me. I had to change my lifestyle: I Didn’t have time to train. You always have to wait when you need to do one take or the next. Although I liked the process itself. I made friends with the guys from the movie. Most of the time I would spend with Oleg Chernov and Valeriy Nikolaev. They’re very athletic guys, all our spare time we would spend in the pool and played tennis and ping pong.

In the ****** you’re playing a Special Forces fighter (Spetsnaz), you were shooting all kinds of weapons… Did the Army remind you of that?
No, I did not serve in special forces. One year in firefighting division, and one year in tank division.

After coming back from the filming, Fedor resumed his training, which he missed in Thailand. Besides running many kilometers, he spends hours in a gym, practicing heavy hitting. He does sparring and wrestling matches with fellow countryman Kiril Sidelnikov, who’s a European Combat Sambo Champion. Emelianenko is getting ready to fight Belarussian Andrei Arlovski, nicknamed Pitbull, which will happen January 24.

It will be the first time you meet with a slav…

Andrei lives in USA 8 years already, so I think he’s Americanized by now! – he laughs. But in all honesty he’s a very good fighter, used to be a world’s champion. So I’m preparing very seriously.

You will fly out to this fight accompanied by priests?
I try to get a blessing before all important things, including my fights. God willing, my spiritual father Andrei Zinoviev will make the trip with me.

Can we ask an uncomfortable question…. Was the break in training, when you were in Thailand, the reason that you did not win a gold medal in the recent World Combat Sambo championship?
I clearly understood that I would not be able to fully prepare. And the fact that I won the Bronze, did not bother me one bit. Everyone else got upset, but not me. I prepare for Mixed Martial Arts primarily and with all seriousness, so I treat Combat Sambo a bit lighter. It’s impossible to be in your optimal condition everywhere and to perform with maximum results all the time.

In the past years, you would have a traditional fight on New Years Eve in Japan. Will you do the same? No, the Japanese could not organize a fight. Perhaps, next year it could happen.

How will you spend the New Years and what will you have on your Holiday table?
More than likely I’ll just meet the new year with my friends and go to sleep. And I will have whatever is allowed for my Christmas fast, on the table.

Underneath the interview were a few interesting pieces of information:

Currently, a TV filming crew from USA is staying in Stary Oskol. The filming group from a central American TV station is making a film about Emelianenko and Andrei Arlovski, about the upcoming fight and how the fighters are preparing for it. Our athlete is very popular overseas: locals love the kind russian fighter, who is alwasy smiling and never loses.

The film crew accompanied Fedor everywhere for a few days. With a camera mounted, cameraman Kevin Hewett ran after Fedor many kilometers in the winter forrest. After building up some smoke, the Americans shot scenes from the upcoming film in the gym of the local college, where Fedor would hit a Kamaz tire with a hammer (that’s an exercise). The champion would work punching bags until they fell on the floor, or get ripped from the ceiling. The overseas guests were in awe, when Fedor would flex his huge muscles in front of the camera lenses. After taking off their shoes, cameramen would run after the champion in the gym, to try to catch that magic shot. They even went with Fedor to the sauna, and there in 100 degree temperature, they would film how Emelianenko recuperates after titanic training sessions. Americans even went to Stary Oskol’s Holy Nikolskiy temple, to film how the fighter participates in the church sermon. They visited the keeper of the temple. They tasted Russian pelmeni in the local cafes, and were thrilled with a freshly made lamb dish. All in all, they worked and vacationed very happily.

Together with the film crew came the vice-president of an american organization of mixed martial arts Jerry Millen. We exchanged a few words with him.

- The film about your countryman will be seen by the whole America, including Barack Obama! – Said Jerry. We will be broadcasting this film on the main American TV Channel, on many satellite and cable channels and put it up on our website. USA has many fans of Fedor. I myself know him for six years and now came to Stary Oskol, to show the other side of his life. Because he is an incredible person, he still lives in a small town, many years he’s training still with the same coaches. Fedor remained just as shy, as he was before his world fame.

TO ALL MY MMA MANIS BROTHERS WHO WE ARGUE WITH EVERYDAY!

I just want to thank the fighters who get in the (ring/cage/octagon) and put it on the line every night.

Without a Liddell, Fedor, Penn, Gomi, and Gracie, we would not have a site where we can "ultimate blog".

I love mma, i love to see and watch mma. I fell like it’s christmas evey month when a PPV comes on and i brag to my friends that i got Fedor in RD1 submission, and they don’t even know who fedor is..

So my point is…

"Thank You Jesus for the sport i was born to watch, and love. And Happy birthday big guy in the octagon sky."

I was just reading an interesting article about how the loser of Okami vs. Lister could be cut from the UFC. Both make more then entry level money so its not worth to the UFC to be paying these guys thousands of dollars to fight on undercards. Both guys are under contract so they simply cant be cut by the UFC. But UFC reserves the right to cut a fighter following a loss, so the loser of this fight is probably GONE!!!! This is all happening because the UFC is said to be trying to trim down to 140 fighters

by john on Dec 24, 2008 2:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sucks to lose that fight. I hope Okami wins. Like Machida the UFC has screwed him in more ways than one. Last time I checked Okami wasn’t making great money. Hell he won the only round against Rich where they actually decided to fight.

by RobH86 on Dec 24, 2008 3:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He is making money in the range that everyone else who has been cut was making like Sokoudjou, Aurelio, and Werdum: about $20,000 – $40,000 base pay with the figure doubling with a win.

I also hope Okami wins because like him or not, there arent to many top middleweights that can beat him and I want the BEST fighters fighting in the UFC…..Not just the fan favorites!

Daniel Valverde: “Mir will find out how good Nogueira’s Jiu Jitsu is”

New Daniel Valverde interview.

On Mir, Nogueira and Magalhaese…

“Frank Mir will find out how good Nogueira’s Jiu Jitsu is on December 27th if the fight goes to the floor. I’ve been training with a lot of great Jiu Jitsu guys and Nogueira is the best I have ever trained with. I had the chance to roll with Vinny while at the show and he did not tap me out. If it was to be a Jiu Jitsu competition, I would win by points and he is 30 pounds heavier than me. I think he is a good Black Belt, but nothing extraordinary. I would like to face him in a Jiu Jitsu competition.”

“Vinny called me and Nogueira to apologize and he said that he didn’t mean to disrespect us, but everything that he said on the show is taped. He is not a bad guy; he just thinks that he is better than he really is.”

“I think Frank Mir has good Jiu Jitsu. He’s dangerous, but Nogueira’s Jiu Jitsu is much better. In addition, Nog has better hands and cardio than Mir. He didn’t change his training for this fight.”

“Definitely Nogueira will try knocking him out and finish the fight standing up.”

Just found this little snippet in Gracie Mag from November or December of 05. It’s about Mirko and his lack of heart:

What did you guys think about Fedor x Mirko? Was the result as expected?

Nogueira: It was, kind of. I even thought for the fact Cro Cop had knocked Fedor’s brother out, he could win. In the first round he was even dangerous. But Fedor is much more of a fighter.

Rizzo: I was betting everything on Fedor. I lived with Mirko in a gym for two months, in the same room. He doesn’t have a warrior’s heart. You just have to see his style, always backwards. Peter Aerts said something I agree on: "The longer the fight takes, the more chances Mirko has of losing it.? He has no heart to turn a fight upside down.

Nogueira: Fedor, on his side, will fight you to death.

I’m kind of inclined to agree with Pedro.

by RobH86 on Dec 24, 2008 3:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Check this out too. From the same article:

And Cro Cop fights in the counter-attack, waiting for a hole to get in, which is easier in any kind of martial art. The one who attacks more exposes themselves…

Rizzo: But when you push the rhythm up it gets easier to trap them. Fedor has that styles, like Shogun’s, of going irresponsibly, and that smothers counter-attacks. But indeed Fedor got out of that fight more injured than Mirko.

Nogueira: What if the opposite happens: Fedor gives Mirko one of those nose blows? I think Mirko just calls for the waiter and asks for the check.

Rizzo: Yes, Mirko never takes the initiative. I always cheer against him. It’s like Bob Sapp winning K-1, a big guy with no technique.

Mirko doesn’t seem a popular guy. I would have always considered myself a fan but this for me shows Mirko in a different light.

Merry Christmas! Cheers to surfin the net while at work on the holidays!

Let me pose this question (kind of belongs elsewhere). Why does it seem as if everyone is ok with and is even pushing for Anderson Silva to move up in weight class, but GSP moving up is a horrible idea? I don’t think the amount of weight they cut to be in their respective class is that different. To me it makes no sense whatsoever… Trying to see the logic behind those arguments. Your guys’ thots?

by sigepsal on Dec 24, 2008 4:45 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

GSP hasnt ‘cleared out’ his division. Anderson did. Theres still fights for Georges at WW but Anderson’s few remaining fights would all be at LHW. I think thats whats up.

GSP hasn’t cleared out the division? Who’s left? He has done just as much, if not more than Silva has done. Came in and dominated the current champ just like Anderson did (twice). Has beat everyone in his path just like Anderson did. Who is left for GSP? What is left for GSP to prove.

Disclaimer: this is all held on the premise that GSP beats Penn, which IMO he won’t…. but if he does… i think he deserves a chance to jump up in weight if thats what he wants to do. And there is no difference in him doing it than Anderson doing it.

Alves, Burns IMO would be good, id like to see kampmann too, kos again (would be different for sure) and call me crazy but i think ben saunders would be great. He would take all these i think, but theyre still interesting. Andy’s fights at MW arent interesting in the least to me.

While GSP is most certainly dominant, I wouldn’t call 1 title defense “clearing out the division.” There is a HUGE difference between beating people while working your way up, and beating people to keep your belt.

Burns who just got brutally KO’ed by Anthony Johnson? I don’t think he is at that level or even close to a GSP. I think Alves will be a solid war for GSP though.

Forrest Griffin/Rashad Evans vs. Anderson Silva for the light heavyweight belt…Good idea or bad idea??

by RampageByKnockout on Dec 24, 2008 4:56 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

great idea, but lyoto deseves his shot if he beats thiago silva.

by b.w. on Dec 24, 2008 5:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Plus i dont think Anderson would want a shot at the title right off the bat, being good friends with Machida and all.

by medecine balls on Dec 24, 2008 5:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

good point. i really wanna see Lyoto start jumping out of the gate with all his karate skills and just start purely dominating the division. as much as i would LOVE to see Forrest vs. Anderson, i guess it can wait. i also think one of the weirdest match ups in UFC history would be Lesnar/Anderson. Can you imagine?? lol

by RampageByKnockout on Dec 24, 2008 5:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

3 wins dis saturday are:

Rampage beats wanderlei via TKO or UD – due to Rampage having his mindset back to normal and being far better than he was when he first fought wanderlei and also the major fact that wanderlei defeated rampage wif knees mostly and he has not utilized these knees effectively in the UFC yet!!!

Nog beats Frank Mir via UD – due to Nogs coming back from the dead qualities plus i believe Nog to be the more technical of striker although he hasnt loads of power in his punches…altho sayin this an upset could occur due to Mir catching Nog in some sort of leg or arm lock!

Griffin beats Rashad via UD – due to Griffin being one hell of a work horse and Rashad has a tendancy to slack off during later parts of the fight!

Wat u guys reckon???? (Merry Christmas)

Your first prediction is more or less a toss up, although i will agree with you on Rampage and that fact that his stand up is probably cleaner and crisper than Wanderlei’s. As much as i think Nog is overrated because he really almost did lose to Herring if Herring would have finished it, ill say he will prolly beat Mir. as far as Forrest and Rashad, i’m a Forrest fan through and through. I think he has alll the skills to keep his belt and theres no way he wants to let it go.

THIS COULD just be a rumor, but I figured I would pass it along anyway…It makes for some good food for thought

Loser of Thiago Silva vs. Machida might fight Banha Cane!

There is some serious bad blood between THiago and Banha. I think this rumor came from Banha’s manager but nothing is definite!

My latest blog posting (click my link) is my entry into this contest, but I can just sum it up like this: who wins this rematch of Wandy and ’Page, and why???

I don’t agree with the other postings here that say that Wanderlei has Rampage’s number…I think ’Page can pull this one off.

QUESTION: I know rampage has some issues coming into this fight, but in everyones opinion do they outweigh Wandy’s??? What i mean is, IMO wandy is going downhill these past two or whatever years. He destroyed Jardine but before that he lost three in a row. Also rampage (skillwise not mentally) has been on the up. Wandy looked great for 40 whatever seconds, but rampage has been goin distance. Just a thought, anyone else?

by medecine balls on Dec 24, 2008 7:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think becoming mentally unstable and getting in a police chase while crushing cars in your giant trunk that has your picture on the side outweighs a 3 fight losing streak. (not trying to sound like an asshole) Plus, I feel Wandy’s in the best mental state and training team he’s ever been with, and this will be Rampage’s first fight after his switch so it might be kind of hard to know what to expect from him. Although I understand your point, I think Rampage’s “situation” outweighs Wand’s by a Moonshot from Jr. Griffey in his prime.

Ryo Chonan’s “Flying Scissor Heel Hook” is the best submission… Oh Wait, I see what I did there. Took “best MMA related submission” a little too literally.

I just want to thank the fighters who get in the (ring/cage/octagon) and put it on the line every night.

Without a Liddell, Fedor, Penn, Gomi, and Gracie, we would not have a site where we can “ultimate blog”.

I love mma, i love to see and watch mma. I fell like it’s christmas evey month when a PPV comes on and i brag to my friends that i got Fedor in RD1 submission, and they don’t even know who fedor is..

So my point is…

“Thank You Jesus for the sport i was born to watch, and love. And Happy birthday big guy in the octagon sky.”
