MMA Quick Quote: Gilbert Melendez mulls move to UFC

"I have one fight left with Strikeforce. Right now, I’m really happy with them…. There is the possibility I could stay there with them, but I don’t know, we will see how it goes. The UFC has always been a big dream of mine. The UFC is a great organization. I love that show. But MMA is a business now and I have got to make sure things are in my best interest. The fighter in me wants to just go to the UFC and just go test myself with everyone. I’m under contract right now part of my contract is we cannot discuss it so I wouldn’t do that. But I hope and believe they are interested. It’s something I would consider. At the end of the day I’m a fighter and I have a life so I have to do what is in the best interest for me."
-- Top-ranked lightweight and former Strikeforce 155-pound champion, Gilbert Melendez, talks about a possible move to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) once his contract with Strikeforce expires. In the meantime, the talented 26-year-old Cesar Gracie-trained mixed martial artist is clamoring for a rematch against Mitsuhiro Ishida. Melendez -- along with training partner Jake Shields -- are highly coveted free agents (sorta and almost, respectively) who could make find themselves competing inside the Octagon in 2009 sooner rather than later. However, Strikeforce is currently the only promotion to have a relationship with a major national broadcast network (NBC), which could be an ace up its sleeve heading into the New Year. There is a real possibility for fighters to get insane exposure to a massive nationwide audience if the promotion can grow its partnership to include live shows on the Peacock Network. That's the business side of things.

Gilbert is the Man! He wants to come to the UFC, the UFC at least better offer him whatever strikeforce was paying him and get him in the octagon ASAP! If not we will have to keep watching him fight Josh THompson or Kawajiri over and over again….because there is no one else in strikeforce tro challenge him
Basically he wants to come to the UFC if the money is right! Get-r-Done Dana!

I get the feeling that he wouldn’t cut it in the UFC or at least won’t win his first match. No particular reason or insight just a gut feeling. Very talented though.

I get the same feeling. He hasn’t done well against wrestlers (Ishida and Thompson) and the lightweight division is full of wrestlers (Maynard, Guida, Edgar, Griffin, Sherk, Pelligrino, and a bunch more)

Sweet! Lets get that fight over with in Strikeforce.

Sounds like he is not too enthused by non-fighting aspect of UFC – wants to fight ufc fighters but probably the deal dana is offering isnt that enticing

because its a buisness, he should drop to 145, he two loses have been to stronger, bigger guys, he will get swallowed against the top 5 maybe even top ten in the UFC
Sorry Gilbert, WEC is where you should be
by Josh on Dec 22, 2008 12:18 PM EST reply actions
Gilbert is a pretty big LIghtweight! What r u even talking about dude?
Speaking of the WEC 145 lb division, does anyone think that Phillipe NOver might be too small for 155 in the UFC? Or does he just need to improve on his wrestling?
by john on Dec 22, 2008 12:28 PM EST up reply actions
I think he’s too small John…He’s short to begin with but the guy is just ripped at 155 which tells me he probably doesn’t have to cut much…he’d be a great addition to WEC 145ers
by McArthur on Dec 22, 2008 12:51 PM EST up reply actions
FYI, Melendez use to fight at 145lbs and moved up to 155lbs, I think he’s an average sized 155lbs and I personally would like to see how he does at 145lbs in the WEC. However, the $$ is in the UFC and I can see why he wants to go there.
by THORAZINE on Dec 22, 2008 3:25 PM EST up reply actions
he makes a cut for sure, he used to fight at 185 then at 170 and is why he fainted on the show. This is the first time he fought at 155. His wrestling is not where Efrain’s is and is actually going to be better by not winning TUF (less pressure). in my opinion

ehoglund??? WTF? are u confusing Melendez with Philipe Nover??… go online study more about the UFC & MMA.. comeback on this forum in a few mths’ when u learn something..lol,

quoting john from above
“Speaking of the WEC 145 lb division, does anyone think that Phillipe NOver might be too small for 155 in the UFC? Or does he just need to improve on his wrestling?”
i was just pointing out that it was nover’s first time down at 155, forget what interview i read it in though.

ehoglund..lol… sorry there guy… I scrolled to see if u might be responding to someone, I missed John’s ques about Nover… again, sorry.
I do agree that Nover is a good size 155lbr, he really looked like a 1st yr JV wrestler I do some assistance coaching for wrestling so it’s obvious to me. The good news is that if Nover applies himself in wrestling he should show ‘great improvement’ in his 1st 2 yrs.
by THORAZINE on Dec 23, 2008 2:09 AM EST up reply actions
haha its all good, and yeah he had nothing on efrain’s wrestling, he just needs to get to a better camp where there will work on those things. i think he could make waves pretty soon but is def not the “next silva” (maybe in a loooong time but i doubt it)
by ehoglund on Dec 23, 2008 8:20 PM EST up reply actions
Josh,
Are you high? Gilbert Melendez is by far I would say Top 5 lightweight around, not just UFC
by Ralphie on Dec 22, 2008 12:28 PM EST up reply actions
I would like to see him in the UFC as well as Nick Diaz (again), but then if all these guys along with Nate fight @ 155, then you might have another AKA situation where these guys wont fight each other. Nick and Nate not fighting is understandable for obvious reasons (they may be knuckleheads but not to the degree of the Shamrock sisters), but a match between Nate and Melendez would be pretty interesting, but I doubt these guys would fight each other.

I always find it funny when athletes say “I shouldn’t talk about it, because of contract reasons”, but then continue on discussing it lol.
by introvert on Dec 22, 2008 1:25 PM EST reply actions
ok man, ill let you think that dude but im saying he is not ripped, he looked super soft compared to Josh, and Yoshida, and he was manhandled, you guys cant deny that, so top five light weight in the world, you guys need to grow up, Penn, Sherk, Florian, Huerta, Sanchez, Griffin, I think they would all beat him, but…. in all fairness non of us can really say much untill we see it, but i look at Gilbert, and see nothing but a over hyped fighter
by Josh on Dec 22, 2008 1:41 PM EST reply actions
sorry not yoshida, it was Ishida, god damn japanese names ahah
by Josh on Dec 22, 2008 1:42 PM EST reply actions
Pointless for him to go there…..who is he going to test himself against?? Abunch of nobodies?? Unless they are giving him a match with Penn its pretty pointless.
by Khaos_Warrior on Dec 22, 2008 1:53 PM EST reply actions
Are you serious, are you talking about the UFC is a bunch of nobodies, that would not be a test ,but this guy loses a fight in Strikeforce,I really hope that I just misunderstood what you are saying

lol@ “i want to test myself in UFC”
gilbert, you would get SMASHED and humiliated in UFC. stay in strikeforce where you will get beaten by josh thompson who is not even top 5 LW in the world.

strikeforce is a joke, josh will not fight anyone worth talking about. gilbert should just stay in strikeforce were the he can get the title back, he will not do good in the ufc.

by ( (Adam G) ) on Dec 22, 2008 3:39 PM EST reply actions
Melendez should stay away from the ufc, he wont be a contender and will probably be cut after a couple of fights.
Who could he beat??
jeremy stephens, Guida, Pellegrino, Huerta, clementi, jim miller, Maynard, sherk, griffin. florian, edgar, diaz, not to mention bj
I dont think he could beat any of these fighters.
by mike22 on Dec 22, 2008 5:17 PM EST up reply actions
I like him, his last fight sucked when he lost the belt but whatever for that one fight, hes a top 5 LTWT in the world bro, he’d beat almost all those people on that list.
LTWT Top Ten:
1)BJ Penn
2)Gesias Cavalcante
3)Eddie Alvarez
4)Kenny Florian
5)Gilbert Melendez
6)Joachim Hansen
7)Nick Diaz
8)Shinya Aoki
9)Sean Sherk
10)Gomi Takanori
Honorable Mention To: Yves Edwards, Roger Huerta, Rich Clementi, Josh Thomson, Hermes Franca, Diego Sanchez, Joe Lauzon and Junie Browning (if he continues to grow).
by ( (AdamG ) ) on Dec 23, 2008 12:48 AM EST up reply actions
I think Edgar, Guida, Griffin and Nate will never make serious runs at a title shot but will always make cards worth watching and sparks will always be flying with any of them, gauranteed! Kind of like a Karro situation, some good wins but not the ones that really count. As soon as one of them gets close enough to the top that they can smell the leather from the belt around Penns gut they will lose and fall back down the ladder, like Guida/Huerta, Griffin/Sherk, Edgar/Maynard, Diaz hasnt got caught yet butonce he fights a real killer like a Florian, Sanchez or Sherk. I dont see any of those 4 seeing Penn in the ring cause they wont make it through the long road it takes to get there but will always be exciting.

That list is perfect exept for melendez… deff shouldnt be #5… and how can you put melendez over thompson?
by mike22 on Dec 23, 2008 3:32 AM EST up reply actions
Because Bert wasnt himself in that fight, ive never seen him like that. And i havent seen enough of Thomson against other opponents like Gilbert but all the guys above him i know are credible and great fighters.
