UFC Quick Quote: Corey Hill medical expenses covered

"Corey Hill is still in the hospital. He had surgery, they put a plate in his leg. We paid for all that. We covered all those expenses. He'll go into rehab, we'll pay for that too."

-- UFC President Dana White tells Steve Cofield over at Yahoo!Sports.com that the promotion is picking up the tab after Corey Hill's shin was shattered to smithereens at UFC Fight Night 16: "Fight for the Troops" earlier this month. There were several readers asking this question when we talked about White's reaction to the carnage right here. It's more than likely a costly endeavor, which is not exclusive to just Hill -- the promotion covers its fighters despite apparently not having medical insurance. This latest update, of course, should not stop fans from donating to the Corey Hill fund. The father of three will likely be out of work for a very long time ... not to mention it's nearly impossible for him to pick up a side job in the meantime while recovering from such a catastrophic injury.

glad to hear that, but of course he still needs money

by roy on Dec 18, 2008 12:59 PM EST reply actions

I found the article, it says UFC doesn’t offer medical insurance (which is what I said), but my guess would be Hill has insurance of some kind. Dana also said they hold seminars etc about insurance and money management! good interview as a whole!

by kevin on Dec 18, 2008 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

Where do you always find this stuff at? I look at a few sites but its always like mania where they only show the excerpts of the interviews

lol, too much time on my hands spooner. can’t wait to get back to work, I’m officially bored, and gonna go back to work 2 weeks early!
off to the dentist, talk to you fools later!

The UFC has insurance on their fighters.. The UFC isn’t “picking up the bill” whoever insures them is.. It will increase the UFC’s rates etc.. but it’s not like it’s actually their money going towards hill’s recovery..

It would be really difficult for Hill to get insurance by himself for in the cage which is why the UFC does it.. Dana always bitches about how much it costs to insure his fighters

by Kory on Dec 18, 2008 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

problem is he wont get any money for sittin on his ass for the next year. he’l be broke! same stroy with mma. ya cant make money in the game unless your elite!
sad!

wow he’s takin care of, none of these medical expenses are coming out of his pocket and you guys still found a reason to bitch?? Are you serious?

by O damn he got caught on Dec 19, 2008 9:18 AM EST up reply actions

Man its good atleast that he’s cover even though im pretty sure UFC is responsible for that- just if hill comes back to fighting anyone else believe he should be fighting at 170?? he just seems WAY to skinny for 155, if he comes back to fighting atleast.

170 in my book

Fair deuce to Dana
Thats what they should have and not be worryin about anyway

by IrishKev on Dec 18, 2008 1:00 PM EST reply actions

I hope Corey makes a full recovery and hope to see him back in the octagon in the future, I could not believe he was still trying to fight after that happened, that break was one of the craziest thing I have ever seen.

Its nice Dana and the UFC are picking up the tab, even though we hear bad things alot, dana and the UFC do alot of good, the fight night for troops holy knockouts great matches, they haven’t let go of Houston alexander he is a family man like Corey hill so, houston just needs more experience

by Cory on Dec 18, 2008 1:01 PM EST reply actions

i wouldn’t call it nice of him, its the least they could do and probally manditory

by roy on Dec 18, 2008 1:03 PM EST up reply actions

I guessing it’s not “probally manditory”

by FukStyck on Dec 18, 2008 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

“it’s nice Dana’s picking up the tab,” you guys need to get over it! He (the UFC) have to! they are liable for injuries that happen in the octagon! Dana is no saint, a more saintly comment on his part would be saying he’ll cover Hill’s mortgage for the year(s) he’ll be out, or saying he gave him a bonus to help with bills. You’d have to be pretty ignorant and out of touch to think that the UFC isn’t responsible for medical bills! I also find it very hard to believe that the UFC doesn’t have accidental injury insurance at all events covering all fighters! Unless mania meant Hill had no insurance! please clarify mania!

by kevin on Dec 18, 2008 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

great post kevin, your right nice would be doing something extra than what they are mandated to do.they probally can’t get insurance for the fighters(in the ring) so they have to pay the medical bills as they come.

by roy on Dec 18, 2008 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

the link is working now roy, check it out! i summed it up though!

by kevin on Dec 18, 2008 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

No company anywhere does more than what they are required to do. It’s how they stay profitable. And just because Hill may or may not ever be able to make a living as a fighter, and there’s no guarantee he was even before snapping his leg, doesn’t mean he can’t work. Dana and the UFC did what they had to do, no more no less. He shouldn’t get any credit or blame for this.

by PW on Dec 18, 2008 6:40 PM EST up reply actions

that is absolutely correct…lets say his medical bills are covered completely for arguements sake and rehab…hows he going to train, he can’t. How’s he gonna pay his mortgage, have heat, eat food, drive his car etc. Its lost income not to mention how far behind he will be with training. Dana may seem like the “good guy” here but I’ll be surprised if we see Hill back in the Octagon in the next 30 months if at all.

by McArthur on Dec 18, 2008 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

I know it Mcarthur, not to mention he won’t be doing anything else either! I don’t know his financial situation, but I do know he was pretty raw talent wise, so he won’t be teaching or instructing either! So he made what 10k at the fight night, that will get him through maybe 2 months? Then what? He’s an independent contractor, so he’s not paying into disability insurance through the state, at his current salary, unemployment would be minimal, so where does this leave him? This could be the ONLY instance that salary gets brought up! He is a lower tier fighter and is not only not making money, but could be morally bankrupt now too!

by kevin on Dec 18, 2008 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

I’m actually in the insurance field and there is no accidental injury insurance that could apply here.. I think you are confusing that with the State Farm comercials with the guy from “the unit” lol

This isn’t like Workers Compensation where a normal company would have to provide medical coverage.. These fighters are probably looked at as independent contractors and the UFC has no obligation to insure them.. I have no idea how their contract reads but i’m sure they could easily make the fighters insure themselves. From what I understand though the UFC does it for them which they probably take some out of their pay to insure. They are helping the fighters though b/c it would be a lot easier for the UFC to get insurance for them than the fighters to do it themselves.

Again though this isn’t the UFC paying for hill… it’s their insurance company

by Kory on Dec 18, 2008 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

the UFC has an “accidental injury” policy Kory, not a fighter health plan. Dana specifically says a health plan (health insurance) would cost too much. I agree (and have stated such( that these guys are independent contractors and are covered as long as injured on the job! They may have their own health coverage (Kaiser, blue cross etc) but it has NOTHING to do with the UFC!

what he said.

Hope Corey nothing but a healthy recovery.

by The Killer on Dec 18, 2008 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

Just to let you guys know, I think the reason they (the fighters) have no health insurance, they are considered independent contractors! Corey probably has his own health care (private ot through his wife), but of course the UFC is responsible for medical bills. I found it strange that anyone thought otherwise! Who would step into such a risky situation (fighting) where anything can happen, if they weren’t covered medically for injuries incurred while in said fight!

by kevin on Dec 18, 2008 1:02 PM EST reply actions

i think the ufc would like to get insurance to cover in the ring injuries but probally no company will insure that to much risk and it is probally cheaper for the ufc to just pay the bills whan a injury does happen

by roy on Dec 18, 2008 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

thats what the article says roy, insurance for the fighters would “put the UFC out of business.” Dana says they’d make no money. I really wish mania would put better quotes up on certain articles or links to the articles that work. there is more to it than “UFC pays medical Bils for Hill.” No sh*t, they have to!

by Kory on Dec 18, 2008 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

we got it Kory, the only reason private health insurance was mentioned was because UFC doesn’t offer health care benefits (or 401k or anything else) so they have to have a policy to cover injuries! He probably has health coverage, just not through the UFC!

by kevin on Dec 18, 2008 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

“This latest update, of course, should not stop fans from donating to the Corey Hill fund.” That can’t be emphasized enough, although it’s good that UFC will be helping out with the medical bills. Paying for rehab should also help a lot. I’ve already made one donation to the fund and if I can afford to make another donation later on I will gladly do so.

by b.w. on Dec 18, 2008 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

Is it possible that maybe there is a waiver the fighters sign about injuries during a fight? Kind of like pools that say swim at your own risk and then I bust my head, kind of screwed there right?

by matthew on Dec 18, 2008 1:11 PM EST reply actions

Bryant Young a long time player on the 49ers had a very similar injury in a Monday Night game against the Giants back in the late 90s. He had a rod put in his leg and was able to play football at a very high level for about 8- 10 years after that injury and actually just retired last year, so it is possible to recover from it.

by GSP4Prez on Dec 18, 2008 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

Right.

This being MMA, Corey can also focus on developing parts of his game other than low kicks and still have a successful career.

Here’s wishing him the best.

by Dissenter on Dec 18, 2008 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

I remember watching that game.

I would think the hardest part about coming back from an injury like that would be the psychological hangover. I don’t know if I would ever want to throw a kick again.

by PhilQNY on Dec 18, 2008 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

They can’t stay quiet JV. It’s programmed into them that they must hate those who are the best. If they are the most successful and make more money then anyone else, they are the enemy.

I don’t get it. The UFC employs hundreds of people. They have made a lot of fighters very rich. They provide top quality entertainment, but it’s still not enough.

by RealDrew on Dec 18, 2008 1:53 PM EST up reply actions

I showed the picture of his leg breaking to my chiroprater. HE FREAKED OUT. When a medical professional can grow quesy at the sight of something like that, I mean it has to mess with Corey Hill’s mind. If I were Corey I would fight one more time to get myself back on the horse and then I wouldn’t fight again.

Can we do not some milk and cheese so he can increase his bone strength. Come on Wisconsin send him a truck load.

Since when are chiropractors medical professionals?

by sp00ner1234 on Dec 18, 2008 3:18 PM EST up reply actions

actually, their guys who couldn’t become doctors…kinda like veterinarians!

by kevin on Dec 18, 2008 4:42 PM EST up reply actions

I think he could fight again in a couple of years.

A friend of mine was run over by a semi. His right leg was severed about 6 inches below the knee. The medics carried his leg separately in a box of dry ice to the hospital. After the complicated surgery that followed, he is now able to walk normally and train and run like he used to. He has lost a little bit of sensation in that leg but has grown used to it.

In Corey’s case, it wasn’t severed. Only the bones (tibia/fibula) broke. He should be able to fight again.

Also look up Henrik Larsson. He is a Swedish Soccer player who broke his leg in similar fashion in 1999. After 8 months of rehab he was not only able to play again, he went on to become one of the most prolific goal scorers ever for his then club, Celtic.

by Flyingknees on Dec 18, 2008 2:04 PM EST reply actions

its hard to comment on where the liability for covering injuries to fighters should lie

frequently an injury will keep a guy out for several months… so the insurance would need to cover loss of earnings as well as medical bills

corey will be out for a long time and this is the kind of injury that will cause a guy like him who was just starting out to seriously consider quitting the sport… look how long it took frank mir to recover fully from his accident… and youd have to think that coreys leg is in at least as bad shape

id expect medical insurance for fighters to be incredibly expensive, and if it is the promotion who are responsible, then small new start up promotions will be in huge trouble as will local shows, you have a guy who was getting paid about $10k to fight at a guess, who will need hundreds of thousands of dollars to cover medical and rehabilitation costs and to provide for his family whilst hes injured. the top level fighters should have sufficient money to cover things like this savede up from their work outside mma and their previous purses. the lower level guys like hill are basically screwed unless the promotion covers them… as i doubt hed be able to afford medical insurance on what hes paid considering his profession anyway

by bigjohn on Dec 18, 2008 2:39 PM EST reply actions

lets not be naive guys, the UFC has insurance that is covering these costs! They don’t have individual health care, but absolutely 100% have accidental injury/death insurance. This is such a non-story/debate. This will directly cost the UFC nothing!
Comparing this to Frank Mirs’ “accident” (motorcycle accident) is stupid for a few reasons!
1. he had auto insurance
2. he trauma not related to mma!
3. these guys (like every other american) can purchase private health coverage or be on their spouses policies (if married).
I’ll say it one last time
the ufc HAD TO PAY for these medical expenses, and in reality, their insurance company is really paying these bills!

by kevin on Dec 18, 2008 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

Why the phuck should I pitch in for Corey Hill just because he fights for a living? If I lose my job, I’d have to go on unemployment or dip into my 401k. He should’ve had the proper insurance.

by GoColts on Dec 18, 2008 2:49 PM EST reply actions

I agree with that…its unfortunate but with this econmony its eat or be eaten

by McArthur on Dec 18, 2008 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe the best solution to preventing this kind of accident would be for Corey to put on some weight. Like 50 pounds at least! When you are 6 foot 4 you need to weigh more than 155 pounds just for general health, let alone using your body for something rigorous like fighting. I look skinny at 165 and I’m 4 inches shorter than him!

by sdow on Dec 18, 2008 3:05 PM EST reply actions

Andrei Arlovski is 6 foot 4 and weighs 100 pounds heavier than Corey. I think that implies he could stand to put on some weight!
