UFC Quick Quote: Dana White on 'Fight for the Troops' carnage

"Had this fight happened seven years ago, we probably wouldn't have been legalized."

-- UFC President Dana White talks with CombatLifestyle.com about the possible ramifications that UFC Fight Night 16: "Fight for the Troops" could have had several years earlier on the growth of the promotion in particular and the sport in general. The three-hour Spike TV special contained more than its fair share of injuries, including the grizzly leg fracture that Corey Hill sustained. Yoshiyuki Yoshida was also viciously knocked unconscious by Josh Koscheck in the main event and was wheeled out of the Octagon on a stretcher as a precautionary measure. In addition, Razak Al-Hussan had his elbow popped because of an armbar, Brandon Wolff left with a scary-looking head wound (pictured ... sans insane swelling) and Jonathan Goulet had to be treated for head and knee injuries. When it rains it pours.

**Note that a "Get Well Fund" has been coordinated by Gracie Tampa to help Corey Hill "with his medical bills and provide for his wife and three children through this holiday season." To donate now click here.

he broke his leg in the fight wouldn’t the ufc cover his medical bills for that?

by roy on Dec 16, 2008 10:54 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I was wondering the same thing. I thought the fighters were covered by insurance while fighting in the octagon?

by natedogg77 on Dec 16, 2008 10:58 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Brandan Wolff may have been better off fighting a hungry bear. Looks like he got beat down in a back alley with a baseball bat.

He should be cast as The Leader in the next Hulk movie

Nice, I bet I’m the only one who gets the reference

by DB on Dec 16, 2008 1:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah his medical bills will be covered by the UFC for the damage, but he will be out for a minimum of 12 – 18 months and will not have any fight income during that time.

by Bojo on Dec 16, 2008 7:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think so! They have insurance, and even as “independent contractors” they would have to be eligible under the UFC’s policy. It happened in the octagon!

by kevin on Dec 16, 2008 11:00 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah but the 12-18 months he’s out he won’t be making money fighting. So it’s likely the “get well fund” is to support his family etc.

agreed

by kevin on Dec 16, 2008 11:28 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i am all for that, i just hope the ufc covered his medical bills.

by roy on Dec 16, 2008 11:34 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m sure they did, it’s part of their insurance policy. But the income the fighter loses out on for not being able to fight while they recover from injury isn’t.

by GregC on Dec 16, 2008 1:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That was the reason for KALIB STARNES fighting the way he did. he stated in a interview that the ufc doesnt take care of the injuries that are sustained in the octagon.

by Willy D on Dec 16, 2008 11:07 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

He did say this. But also, on the sherdog forums he on a post he also stated that the UFC does indeed take care of medical bills. So who knows there. I believe Tito also made a deal about them not taking care of these things.

I call B.S. he’s just a pussy!
the UFC HAS to be liable…Jeff, you on today?
my dad owns a big construction company, he subs out ALL the work. if someone fell off a roof, even though they’re an employee of the sub-contractor, it’s still my dads site!
The octagon would be the equivalent to a job site! UFC is 100% liable for injuries sustained, thats what insurance is for. This is why I get so on the UFC’s side when it comes to salaries, do you guys realize what insurance costs have to be to insure guys punching and kicking one another? Think of what you pay for insurance (12k+ a year) now figure 20+ guys fighting…what’s the cost per event??

by kevin on Dec 16, 2008 11:41 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Dead On. In fact our company has been through that exact scenario. The guy that fell off was actually a friend of the sub contractor’s that had gotten up on the roof, and did’nt inform us. To make matters worse, he is epileptic. He had a seizure and off he went. Our insurance would not cover him but we were forced to settle out of court, after a long costly battle.

I guess the UFC could have them sign some kind of waiver, but, even that usually gets pushed aside in a civil trial. Bottom line: your company, your job, your responsibility.

I train under Kurt Pellegrino, and I know when he broke his hand in the Stevenson fight, UFC paid for all his medical expenses.

by Jeff on Dec 16, 2008 1:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

really jeff?? wow, I was looking for your legal knowledge!
yes jrandolph, waivers aren’t really fool proof, there are ALWAYS ways around them!

by kevin on Dec 16, 2008 2:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I asked that exact question to a fighter once and he said that they are covered before and after the fight. I think its still a good fund becuase ole Corey is out of work for alittle while now.

by JJ on Dec 16, 2008 11:10 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

If the UFC isn’t covering his medical bills, then UFC fighters really are getting the shaft! I really hope that’s a misunderstanding because that’s an outrage otherwise.

Assuming UFC is paying medical bills (and all deductibles!), the fund that Gracie has set up is questionable. I’m sure Corey Hill and his family could use the help – these days, who couldn’t – but it smells like capitalizing on the sympathy of a grizzly injury and I wonder where that money is going.

by mmmmbacon on Dec 16, 2008 11:16 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

That wolff guy should never be allowed to fight again. He got the living cr@p kicked out of him and just based on that solo fight alone should not be allowed in a cage under the UFC banner. That was pure embarrasment. He got kicked in the nuts, and then got the living hell kneed out of his face and body. He should def reconsider his career. I understand loosing, but loosing like that is just nuts. Rich Franklin was the closest thing to getting beat down like that, but he at least landed some shots and took the knees a little differently. This guy just covered up and took a beating.

by What? on Dec 16, 2008 11:17 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

That was one fight man. Take into account the tremendous size and reach advantage Ben had…maybe Wolff just needs to reconsider weight classes, and not necessarily fighting as a career.

by Dayvet on Dec 16, 2008 11:21 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i would have verbally tapped after the nut kick. hats off to brandon wolff for basically getting run over by a truck and not giving up.

by jonsey on Dec 16, 2008 11:22 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

the ref should never be allowed to step into the octagon again, he didn’t have enough balls to step in when he should’ve.. turning your back standing like 3 times is more than enough to stop the fight.

by RoB on Dec 16, 2008 11:45 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i dissagree. i’d much rather see someone given a chance to recover and come back in a fight than to have it stopped too early. most the knees were deflected and he was still standing for the majority of it so i think the ref stopped it at the right time. it’s just a little swelling. JEEZ!

by jonsey on Dec 16, 2008 12:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree 100%. Most guys wouldn’t have stayed with it like he did.

Is the donate link working for anyone else? I wanna hook a brother up.

by JimmieGreens on Dec 16, 2008 11:22 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

That direct link doesn’t work, I think. There is a working link, though, at GracieTampa.net. I went there and they have the working link to donate. I’ve already made a donation.

by DCRage on Dec 16, 2008 11:29 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

no, the link doesn’t work!

Yeah injuries in this sport will be scrutinized for the time being because of the reputation of the sport. There is a risk of serious injury in any sport, but the media needs a whipping boy to draw viewers in. Imagine what coverage would be like if, God forbid, someone where to die from injuries occuring in a UFC fight. Hopefully that never happens, but it’s a possibility.

by MongoMan on Dec 16, 2008 11:30 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

It was a nasty night for sure. The thing is that Hills injury was a freak, maybe there is something wrong with him to begin with. Razaak shouldve tapped, guys that dont tap get broken plain and simple its talked about all the time. I personally would rather see a guy get his arm broke than a nasty KO like Yoshida. When you see guys stiff on the ground with there eyes rolling back in there head, it never looks good for anyone and cant be good for the guy laying on the ground. I am a huge MMA fan and have been for 13 years and still dont like seeing guys get knocked unconcious. Being Knocked Out is a tramatic injury to the brain at the time of impact hence the KO. I love MMA but understand why people dont.

by Spyder on Dec 16, 2008 11:46 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Hills injury was freak – but was this the biggest night of mismatches on Prime Time TV? I can tell you this – it is hard enough to get a kitchen pass to watch these fights and when your significant other walks by the TV and you have guys looking like characters from Star Trek between rounds, it becomes even harder to watch this stuff live. Raising money for TBI seemingly becomes a ruse when you see facial and gonad abuse at this level…

by TapedUpPair on Dec 16, 2008 12:32 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

get well fund to help him with his medical bills?.. i understand but the UFC should give him enough money to cover his medical bills

by RoB on Dec 16, 2008 11:48 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Hill also has a wife and 3 children to support, among other expenses. The fund will help cover those.

by DCRage on Dec 16, 2008 12:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think it would all depend on the way UFC handled it. If they played their cards right, it could deplete some of the rumors that UFC brass are ass holes and dont care about fighters. I think they’d be delicate in the matter.

by masters on Dec 16, 2008 11:49 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Ok ok I’m here.. sorry I’m late, Damn weather kept me from getting to work this morning and we all know no one posts from home. I think that if they aren’t covered by appropriate insurance they will be after this because this is a huge red slash on the UFC. Alot of people noticed how bad this fight was and even Dana thinks the carnage was wicked. It won’t go away if they don’t take care of their fighters.

I train under Fedor everyday and I have insurance that covers me and my numerous debilitating injuries.

this is one of the few comments that actually made me laugh out loud. i’d be interested to know what company covers you with such a hazardous occupation.

Tell Fedor he’s a pussy. And oh yeah- I train under Chuck Norris. Twice a day.

So wut was the reason for that wicked leg break? Was is cus coreys 6 4 n doesn’t have much muscle mass around his leg to protect the bone or was it jus thrown w so much power? I couldn’t watch it cus I was in miami n the tv had like 10 channels

by johnny on Dec 16, 2008 3:58 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

when your leg is skinnier than the average penis it’s more a matter of when than if it’s gonna break.

by jonsey on Dec 16, 2008 5:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Damn, I’m above average because I got more girth than his leg!

anyone else think the yamizaki shouldve stopped the fight before Razak Al-Hussan’s arm was snapped? or that the ref shouldve at least seen the grizzly leg break? didnt rogan stop that fight!
