Georges St. Pierre fighting to become 2008 Canadian Athlete of the Year

By Georges, he's (almost) got it.
Undisputed UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre has one more fight left in 2008, only this time it's not inside the Octagon.
"Rush" is part of a select group of athletes chosen by Ontario's Sportsnet.ca that will go head-to-head in the popular vote to determine Sportnet's '2008 Canadian Athlete of the Year'.
Opposing him are Hockey's Jarome Iginla, Baseball's Justin Morneau, Tennis star Daniel Nestor and Paralympic gold medalist Chantal Petitclerc.
No question they're all terrific athletes, but since this is an MMA site I'm pulling for "The Saint".
For those of you who want to pad the vote or if you're like me and dig GSP's riddum, head over to the voting page by clicking here to cast your vote.

he didn’t win yet and personally i am not impressed by this post by mania…i mean i’m from Canada and i’m proud of Jerome Iginla (the hockey player he’s never heard of) who is one of the greatest captains to ever play the game. As well as Justin Morneau (the baseball he doesn’t care about) who won MVP of the MLB last year…yea a Canadian won MVP in “America’s” game if that isn’t impressive in this day and age i don’t know what is…overall disrespectful post towards Canadians who are very proud of these people you just brush off as meaningless….

Lighten up Captain Canada. I’m sure there are plenty of stateside athletes I like that you don’t care about.

It is an MMA site my friend so obviously the writers of the site are going to DUH pull for the MMA fighter up for the award. Go vote yourself for who you as a Canadian think is the best athlete. That’s your right.

Dude, as a very proud Canadian serving in our military I found nothing wrong with the Mania post. Time to lighten up I think!

GSP should win this, hands down. That said, I would be shocked if he comes out on top in the voting, but on the face of it, I think he’s actually the best athlete on the list. Love Jerome and Chantal but this one should go to Rush.

I still don’t see how Morneau got the MVP award? (it was actually 2 years ago) They really screwed Jeter that year. Anyway, I hope St. Pierre will get the nod, but I doubt it.

This is Canada we’re talking about. Jarome Iginla is a huge star. It’s like having BJ Penn go up against Tom Brady for American Athlete of the Year. I wouldn’t exactly say GSP is a lock.
I voted for GSP, though.

Guys GSP is Toast.
Every kid in canada will vote for Iginla.
Unless everyone else in the world votes, thats the only way GSP will win. I dont like his chances at all.
I hate hockey and I am from Canada. PEI to be precise.
It robs us of any chance of producing quality athletes that count. Sure we can win gold or silver in Hockey pretty much every olympics but what does that mean when only 1/8th of the world even knows what hockey is. Its hard to promote any sport.
So many parents put so much pressure on thier kids to live out thier dream or become thier meal ticket its crazy. The sport is fun to watch but is too much of an obsession. Sports in Canada is too one dimensional. How about mid october to End of March for a regular season. Then a bit of EXTREME HOCKEY (Extremly $$$ more like it) Then lets throw in some powerskating and some summer camps during the vacation.
Atleast in the states they have a fairly good mix of sports to choose from. Here in the north its not that varied.
I dont care how much my two girls wanna play Hockey they will never join. I have better things to do than freeze in a rink during the xmas holidays and marchbreak. Not to mention running he11 west and crooked all winter in crappy weather.
No thanks, Badminton – Judo – Wrestling thats what they will do… When they arnt learning the fiddle or taking art classes.
(My wife has her say too)

Acutally I dont mind the windmills they arent near me.
And I think there should be more.
If it were up to me I would not bail out the big 3 auto dealers but instead convert thier plants to making solar panels and windmills. Put such a big push in that direction the things would be cheap enough they could be sold at dollaramma…
I did play one game of hockey once with gear on, couldnt frigg’n move (Felt like a robot). Played lots of pond and ball hockey. Pretty much all the guys were spaz’s I went to school with that played hockey and it was enough to sicken anyone on a sport.
Hockey just enabled the a$$h0[e$ and they think thier tuff hiding behind a cage.
Man, I was loving it when the NHL was down. Too bad the UFC couldnt have taken advantage of that.
I also wish there was an National MMA sports body that promoted it and organized coaching/training levels.
Difficult because it is a combo of wrestling, judo, boxing, BJJ, Muai Tai ect.

Hey I like MMA and they arnt in that yet.
Actually if they played anything other than hockey I would be happy. HOCKEY sucks.
I dont believe I said they couldnt play other sports just not hockey. I Love tons of activities/sports golf, flag football, canoing, softball, Biking, Hunting & hiking. I just wont sacrifice or waste my time on Hockey. If thats not enough choice for them… Then I guess I am just selfish. (I want my girls to be well rounded)

thankfully Sean Avery is not Canadian but both the guy and girl he said that about are Canadian so f*ck Avery he is a disgrace to the league and i’m glad Dallas kicked him off the team…

Sean Avery is Canadian he is from Pickering Ontario.
by JSP on Dec 16, 2008 11:04 PM EST up reply actions
That was a ridiculous over-reaction on the part of the NHL to suspend Sean Avery, and Dallas to get rid of him. They just signed him to a contract too. How can a sport condone fighting (I know they penalize the combatants but it’s still an accepted part of the culture of the sport) and then suspend a guy for making a crack about another player dating his sloppy seconds? It’s completely ridiculous.

i made the switch from Hockey fan to MMA fan around 2 years ago, but I’m still gonna vote for Jarome iginla.i’m not trying to take any thing away from Geogres,I just think that Jarome’s acomplishments are slightly greater.not much just a little bit.If george had succesfully fought in more than 1 weight class then I would have voted for him.I think that what Georges has done is quite impressive, but Jarome had to compete with and against 700 other hockey players.Where as Georges has only competed 3 times in 1 weight division.
by the Levi on Dec 16, 2008 10:13 PM EST reply actions
The true beauty of this is that GSP will become a household name and expand MMA further in Canada. Whether he deserves to win is one thing, but to be considered is certainly good.
by DJ on Dec 16, 2008 10:38 PM EST reply actions
HAAHA the name is priceless. Though if you ask most Americans it was a tie….I’d say Iggy will win but It’ll be interesting to see what % of voting GSP gets.
by Amos on Dec 17, 2008 1:00 AM EST up reply actions
Everyone in Canada is going to vote for Iginla?
Doubt that!
maybe all the flamers out there but thats about it! Another quote i read is that he is the greatest captain in hockey history? that isn’t even worth a legitiment response. (Although Stevie Yzerman and Mark Messier might argue that point) Iginla has never won a actual championship so there is no way he will win canadian athlete of the year! usually that goes to a Olympian during a Olympic Year. But I actually think GSP has a great chance. If he had entered the Olympics for Canada as a wrestler as he had talking about earlier in the year he would have won this hands down. If he doesn’t get it i think Chantal Petitclerc deserves it.

i LIVE in calgary and i voted for gsp. it will be sad if gsp loses in my view. i know the paralympic chick has accomplished a lot but you need to take into consideration the consumer popularity of a sport. i mean, i should be up for nosepicking. i may be the best at it but no one really cares to watch me do it.
and then again, maybe i am being biased, but i feel that iginla is not on the level of hockey that georges is in mma. is jerome consistently considered one of the greatest hockey players in the world right now? and don’t get me started on Mr. “I play doubles cause I suck at singles” Daniel Nestor.

This is completely off the topic but I need someone to answer this for me.
Why wasn’t Junie arrested for throwing a glass at someone. That counts as assault with a deadly weapon. Can Dana actually keep someone in the house from pressing charges? If I was in that house and I got a glass thrown at me, I would easily have him eliminated by just calling the Police. I understand that there is no phone access but you can eventually tell Dana that you want to press charges. I don’t think Dana has the power to stop you from doing that no matter what’s written in the contract.
Can someone inform me on this issue?
by ProKev on Dec 17, 2008 4:36 AM EST reply actions
been talked about already…when it happened, when it was relevant! I don’t care what anyone told me, if the contract states no “contact” outside of cage, he should have been thrown off, and I would have pressed charges!

I’m working with a few Canadian guys here in upstate, NY and they can’t stand GSP. They’re from Ontario, and they say he isn’t a real canadian, and that most Quebecers aren’t, because they’re French. I’ve been to Montreal, and I was treated like sh*t by the locals, strictly because I am American and don’t speak French. One guy even tried to start a fight with me when I was walking down the street one night. But as soon as I stood up to him and told him to bring it, he cowered and walked away. Anyway, I was always under the impression that GSP was a favorite all over canada, but it seems that may not be the case. Every Canadian Ive met is extremely patriotic. I wonder what kind of response GSP would get if the UFC held a show in Alberta or Ontario.
by --utaptout-- AKA..."The Prodigy's" 4th biggest hugger on Dec 17, 2008 10:02 AM EST reply actions
G.S.P is a favorite around Canada thats for sure, i’m from Ontario too and we all love him here. Maybe your friends just aren’t big UFC fans? Cause how couldn’t you go for him if he you were Canadian? anyways your right about Quebecers, they want to succeed from Canada and have their own nation state…basically they want to keep everything Canada provides for them but not be a part of Canada anymore…that is why they are viewed so negatively by real Canadians….
G.S.P would still get an insane response no matter where the event is held in Canada NO QUESTION ABOUT IT
by Breton on Dec 17, 2008 10:40 AM EST up reply actions
The guys I work with actually are fans of MMA, although definitely not as big as we are…they just hate quebecers…and really cant stand GSP. Theyre not BJ fans either though.

I’m from Ontario. I met Georges at the Montreal airport sometime in Oct. No entourage, nothing fancy, and he was a nice guy. He didn’t mind chatting for a minute. There’s no good reason to hate him. The dudes you work with are ignorant for hating Quebecers in general. If you ask me, Georges is a pretty good ambassador for the sport in Canada.

I’m from the westcoast, and around here I would havev to say that’s it’s an even 50/50 split. He’s either loved or hated not much in between.
by the Levi on Dec 17, 2008 12:44 PM EST up reply actions
Why do they hate gsp?, because he’s from quebec, real intelligent guys, worth listening to, bigots. I don’t know gsp personally but from almost everyone I’ve heard of who’s dealt with him say he’s a nice guy, maybe they hate nice guys. I’m from manitoba and have never met an MMA fighter in person and have never been to a live mma show. I lied I did meet herb dean in a bar and talked to him for a minute or so and he had to leave, I guess he was a mma fighter of sorts LOL. With 3 losses and 2 wins I understand why he’s a ref. I voted for gsp but would be surprised if he wins, MMA isn’t really mainstream and I wonder if it ever really will be.
by nathan on Dec 17, 2008 12:56 PM EST reply actions
Maybe they hate gsp so much because they bet against him and lost a lot of money :)
by nathan on Dec 17, 2008 1:03 PM EST reply actions
All I know is over all gsp is loved were every he goes, states or canada, watch who gets the biggest response at weigh ins, or how they react when ever he’s on the big screen as a spectator at a fight, gsp haters are a very small minority.

I’m impressed by the Canadian contingent on mania. At approximately 10% population size of the U.S., I’d hazard to guess we’re over-represented here.
My opinion…
- MANY of us like GSP – regardless of Provincial ties (I’m from B.C., now live in Ontario)
- Those who dislike the French are mostly ignorant – if you asked them why they’d give you a stupid answer.
- I’m getting tired of the Leafs which is diluting my love of hockey.
- Baseball is too damn long and boring. 160+ games???
- Sorry Iggy, Morneau, Peticlerc and Nestor…I must go vote for GSP.

I too am from BC, South Surrey, and now living a little outside Toronto. Any true mma fan has to at least respect Georges for his ability, if they can’t come to grips with the fact that he is from Quebec and has a funny accent they are ignorant. Obviously most people love the guy, and he’s earned that admiration.
