Randy Couture becomes 'Expendable' in blockbuster new movie role

Lights, camera and some serious ACTION.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Randy "The Natural" Couture will join action stars Jet Li, Jason Statham and Dolph Lundgren in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming action flick 'The Expendables' according to Ain't It Cool News.

Joining them will be Oscar-winner Forrest Whitaker in a tale of mercenaries on a mission to overthrow a South American dictator. Stallone has called the film, which he will produce, write and direct, a 'homecoming of tough guys.'

Fortunately there doesn't seem to be much of a plot so we don't have to worry about it interfering with any of the action.

Now that's the Sly we all know and love.

As a fan of 80's action flicks, hearing this news makes me want to go out and eat some red meat. This could be the greatest collection of celluloid toughness since Carl Weathers, Bill Duke, Jesse Ventura and Sonny Landham joined the Austrian Oak for 1987's Predator.

Stallone is coming off the success of the gory but entertaining 'John Rambo,' and could very well elevate Couture's career to new heights.

Or the movie could bomb and "Naych" will be back in the bargain bin with his face covered up by a red discount tag.

Couture has been vocal about pursuing a career in acting now that he's in the twilight of his fighting career and has recently starred in movies like Redbelt and The Scorpion King 2: Direct to Video.

I'm not sure how much actual acting this role will require, but it's still nice to see him in there mixing it up with the big boys.

We'll be sure to bring you more on "The Expendables" as additional information becomes available.

Miss Cung Le is gonna use this as an excuse to duck Nog in 09. I thought once Nog unified the titles, couture would have nowhere to run but this i didn’t see coming.

Put that bullsh*t to bed already, Couture isn’t ducking Nog; christ the guy has like 9 loss’s wtf does he care if Nog beats him; like all the sudden he’s no longer a hall of famer? He never held the belt 5 times cause Nog beats him? Wtf is he afraid of exactly? You act like he’s undefeated and trying to pad this awesome record; get off it already.

On to business.. Jason Statham, Jet Li, Couture, all action, no acting, thats what I’m talkin about. I can’t wait for this flick, I love corny old action movies like Showdown in little tokyo, blood sport and Commando. The only guy their missing here is Bas Rutten; someone contact Sly ASAP!

How can i put it to rest when Nog calls him out and he refuses? The guy ranked below should call you out not the other way around. It still irks me that he just blew him off in all his interviews when he quit.

Also Commando is one of the greatest movies ever:)

by NameNotRequired on Dec 16, 2008 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

At that time Couture was calling out Fedor, so the lower ranked guy WAS calling out the #1 fighter. It doesn’t make sense to fight Nog lose and blow your chances of challenging Fedor; when you have a chance to fight the #1 ranked HW in the world you take it. He’s not ducking nor has he ever ducked Nog, he attempted to take the bigger fight while the option was available. How many chance’s in your life time are you gonna have to challenge the #1 ranked HW?? Probably none; so it makes sense to go after the opportunity if there’s a chance.

by O damn he got caught on Dec 16, 2008 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

Everything you described i call protecting his legacy via ducking. Why risk losing when you can claim “well i only lost to the greatest ever?” Trying to go out on a high note regardless of the outcome. That doesn’t sound like the typical anytime anyplace motto of “true” fighters.

by NameNotRequired on Dec 16, 2008 7:29 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with O damn, that Randy ducking Nog BS is getting old. You are the only one on this site I ever see saying that. I guarantee that if Nog in some way loses to Mir, Randy would fight Nog in a heartbeat for one more shot at the title.

by naturalshadow on Dec 17, 2008 3:08 AM EST up reply actions

IF Couture had been the #1 ranked HW in the world and Nog was calling him out and he refused then I’d agree, but the fact that he’s sitting below Nog in the rankings it just doesn’t make sense. Why would you duck someone ranked higher than you are and call out a guy ranked higher than him?

Either way its a no lose situation, he’s ranked lower, if Couture loses to Nog he’s supposed to if he wins he gains credability; hell he wouldn’t even have to win just have a good showing. Both Fedor and Nog are/were ranked higher, he just went for the #1 instead of the #2; anyone else would have done the same.

If he had to fight Nog to get to a title or to get to Fedor he’d do it in a second; the fact is, at that time Nog wasn’t an obstacle, the UFC was. You don’t make any sense with your “ducking nog” argument.

Did anyone see Redbelt or The Scorpion King 2? Was he any good in them?

by EazyEismydad on Dec 15, 2008 11:29 PM EST reply actions

He was OK in Redbelt. He played himself, so not too hard.

by Space on Dec 16, 2008 12:15 AM EST up reply actions

he was god awful in that movie. terrible acting skills. very dull and boring. maybe this is his breakout role.

by bradpittfightclub on Dec 16, 2008 12:21 AM EST up reply actions

Couture was ok in Redbelt, as Space said… Couture played himself.

by THORAZINE on Dec 16, 2008 12:37 AM EST up reply actions

COUTURE PLAYED WITH HIMSELF???!!!!

by Quinton on Dec 16, 2008 12:58 AM EST up reply actions

Did JJ Machado play the brazilian guy in redbelt? I thought couture was OK in it, but i almost threw up during the Scorpion King promo.

by NameNotRequired on Dec 16, 2008 11:13 AM EST up reply actions

Yes he did…. it also had Dan Inosanto as the professor and Gene Lebell in some role

by Psyqo78®™ on Dec 16, 2008 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

Boom Boom Mancini was also in Redbelt. There were a lot of fighter and well known martial artists (Danny Inosanto as the old man) in that movie. Seeing all of them in the same movie was interesting, but as a whole, the movie was about as exciting as watching grass grow.

HE WASNT THAT HARD? WERE THE DIRECTORS MAD?

by Brandon on Dec 16, 2008 1:13 AM EST up reply actions

The Scorpion King 2 was so bad Randy was probably the best actor in it.I haven’t seen Redbelt but I’m mildly interested in seeing this movie.I was surprised I liked the last Rocky movie and Stallone directed that so I’ll give this movie a chance anyway.

by tyler on Dec 16, 2008 1:04 AM EST up reply actions

Scorpion King 2 was a terrible movie, but Couture didn’t do all that bad; gotta blame whoever came up with the script on that one. The natural as an egyptian? Riiiiigghhht…..

by O damn he got caught on Dec 16, 2008 9:25 AM EST up reply actions

he was horrible in that movie, how can you say he wasn’t bad? i thought they did a voice over on him, it looked like he was lip singing

by roy on Dec 16, 2008 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

It’s Lip Syncing not “lip singing” for fuck’s sake!

by tyler on Dec 16, 2008 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

i think you know alot about lips sinking

Way to go Randy! This is a way better gig than fighting! And since you’re a womanizer[like the Britney song, hehe!], there’re tons of chicks in Tinseltown!

lol! randy, fedor and cung le should all star in a movie together called “guys who used to fight for a living, but now make crappy movies”. it would be a smash hit in timbuktu.
