UFC Quick Quote: Yoshiyuki Yoshida released from hospital after knockout loss

"Tokyo’s Yoshida, who remained on the canvas while being tended to by commission doctors, was removed from the Octagon on a stretcher as a precautionary measure. He was later treated and released from a local hospital for a concussion."

-- Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) today provided a medical update on Yoshiyuki Yoshida via its Web site. "Zenko" was brutally knocked unconscious last night during his main event welterweight tilt against Josh Koscheck at UFC Fight Night 16: "Fight for the Troops" and was wheeled out of the Octagon on a stretcher as a precautionary measure. It was the first time ever the super tough Japanese standout was put to sleep. It was also the first time ever Koscheck scored such a decisive finish. Unfortunately, the result was the culmination of a night of carnage -- Corey Hill (leg), Razak Al-Hussan (elbow/arm), Brandon Wolff (head) and Jonathan Goulet (head/knee) all sustained rather serious injuries. Get well soon.

Dude……………LMAO!
Seriously though, That was a devastating knockout. :O
I’m not a koscheck fan but I really liked that knockout.

by Natas on Dec 11, 2008 12:08 PM EST up reply actions

It was crazy because you could see the docs still tending to him 10 mins after the fight was over during the Joe-Goldy wrap up.

Honestly what a night- i asked Mania earlier about razak al-hassan or whatever if his shoulder popped out also?? i think cory’s leg and this is proof that big john was the best ref.. im sure he would of stopped the fight WAY before that idiot refused to tap i just don’t get fighters who don’t want to tap cuz they think its a pussy move- GSP tapped when he got arm bared by Matt hughes the first time- and he came back stronger than ever.. this guy can have a life long injury cuz of his stubberness- better to tap and fight another day then to not tap and not fight again.

Hehe, dumba$$ move…

The injuries were rather badass to watch as most were inflicted at via some serious skill. Get well soon and do it again.

by the matt king on Dec 11, 2008 12:06 PM EST reply actions

There was a significant amount of carnage from last night’s show. Kind of ironic considering they were raising money for wounded troops.

I hope Corey Hill and Razak Al-Hussan heal quickly.

by RealDrew on Dec 11, 2008 12:14 PM EST reply actions

Who is going to raise money for the wounded fighters? It’s not like Zuffa is going to fork out the $$$ for their healthcare costs, much like the US Gov’t isn’t forking out anything for wounded soldiers.

At least Goulet can come back home for aid.

by Graham on Dec 11, 2008 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

excellent point…it kind of defeats the purpose

by McArthur on Dec 11, 2008 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

kenny florian stated on espn’s mma live, that the ufc pays for all medical bills for injuries incurred during all ufc fights and for rehab afterwards, so no it doesn’t defeat the purpose. kevin iole is reporting that the ufc raised $4 million last night for the fallen victims fund. keep trying though guys. :)

by b.w. on Dec 11, 2008 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

well, what kenny florian says must be incorrect.. cause i’m pretty sure that the UFC doesn’t give a damn about the fighters medical bills

by RoB on Dec 11, 2008 1:53 PM EST up reply actions

ROB. kenny is a ufc fighter, he should know firsthand better than anyone else. how could he be incorrect? why would he lie?

by b.w. on Dec 11, 2008 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

Isn’t it obvious that Rob knows more than any UFC fighter and states plain facts!

by Psyqo78®™ on Dec 11, 2008 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

b.w…..you are correct…I was referring to the long lay offs involved with rehab and more importantly the lack of income and lack of training

by McArthur on Dec 11, 2008 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

the athletic commission REQUIRES that they fighters are insured on the night of the fight. they get their injuries and any required rehab paid for as part of said insurance. the reason fighter look for healthcare is because this is only good for the night of the fight and doesn’t cover injuries incurred during training.

this has been stated by MANY fighters, not just Kenny.

by kitsunex on Dec 11, 2008 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

whatever they’re paying right now isn’t enough.. that’s my point!

by RoB on Dec 11, 2008 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

ROB. i still dont get your “point”. they dont pay enough..enough what? salaries? medical bills? you need to say/type what you mean. what is it that you know that we dont?

by b.w. on Dec 11, 2008 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

i think my boss doesnt pay me enough either. i could also go get another job. but i guess atheletes are held at a different standard then us regular folk

by Egads on Dec 11, 2008 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

Great point Egads!

by James S on Dec 11, 2008 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

Umm lets see. I’m guessing the insurance that the promotion paid for prior to the event to cover in ring fighter injuries would take care of the guys that got hurt. Just a guess though based on the fact that all fighter injuries that occur in the ring are covered at every UFC event.

anyone else think the ref should have stopped the saunders vs wolff fight much earlier? i mean come on he had no chance whatsoever talk about a mismatch, it was a kid against a man, physically impossible for wolff to do anything against saunders..

by RoB on Dec 11, 2008 12:16 PM EST reply actions

I rarely complain about stoppages, but yeah, I thought he took a little more of a beating then he should, but if it was stopped earlier someone would have probably complained that he wasn’t hurt.

by James S on Dec 11, 2008 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

Terrible stoppage. I found myself screamig at the TV -“stop the fight already.”

by NameNotRequired on Dec 11, 2008 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

That is the exact same thing I said last night, the guy turn his back towards saunders like 3 times. The guy was overwhelmed, it was a new ref or at least I have never seen him but they need to be able to read between the lines the guy was done and he took punishment he didnt need to take. As far as Cantwell I liked him in the WEC but you dont say that you are looking to break somebodies arm you do it if you have too and Al hassan wasnt tapping so he did what he had to do. But at then end when he told Rogan he enjoyed doing it and taunting after the fight that he broke the arm. They should feed him to Anderson Silva for being so unsportmanlike.

by hk on Dec 11, 2008 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

Totally agreed. When his forhead already looked like it was about to burst open any second, and he continued to do nothing but turn his back and eat knees I was thinking they should stop it too. I thought it went on too long. Where’s Dana complaining about the stoppage on this one?

by Diceman on Dec 11, 2008 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

Its a mans game!

by Nick J on Dec 11, 2008 12:17 PM EST reply actions

It’s is a “man’s game” for sure, but the ref should have been “a man” and stepped in a little earlier. There were approx half a dozen unneccessary shots where Wolff was not intelligently defending himself.

by CL on Dec 11, 2008 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

yea, wolff turned his back and had no intentions of firing back, he wanted a way out.. his head couldn’t have felt so well after the fight

Lol, Rampage at his finest!

by fokman on Dec 11, 2008 1:01 PM EST up reply actions

I think the reason for that was due to the fact there were so many mis-matches

by Robert on Dec 11, 2008 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

Brandon Wolff’s forehead was pretty sick too…it looked liked a botox injection gone wrong

by McArthur on Dec 11, 2008 12:44 PM EST reply actions

Hell yea it was. It was the 2nd worse hematoma ive seen.

Check out Hasim Rahman after getting caught with some holyfield headbutts! Now you see why tyson ate half of his ear, lol.

Yeah I counted 49 muay thai knees, along with approx a dozen kicks.. Great Muay Thai exhibition.

by DirtbagHtr on Dec 11, 2008 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

I thought the Al-Hussan arm bar should have been stopped a few seconds earlier or at least before Cantwell was walking to his corner with his arm.

And I am not a fan of stoppages. I disagree that the Saunders/Wolff fight should have been stopped.

There’s always tapping out or a verbal tap.

by James S on Dec 11, 2008 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

So that makes two people who didn’t tap, Jesus and Al-Hussan.

WWAHD?

I am sure glad my wife wasn’t watching this telecast with me .. she usually watches all mma with me and complains at the same time … man this would have been the end my watching mma ..whew … yep I am whipped.

by commoner on Dec 11, 2008 1:08 PM EST reply actions

Seriously. You should just go ahead and tapout.

by DDT on Dec 11, 2008 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

The way yoshida was fighting he was begging to get KTFO he looked like shit in there like a beginner with no experience, I knew it was just a matter of time. His head staight up like that standing right in front of koscheck with little foot work. But man what a brutal card I don’t think there’s ever been one with so much brutality. This must be some kind of record for injures on one card.

by nathan on Dec 11, 2008 1:19 PM EST reply actions

If u dont tap its your fault your arm got broken be happy the ref stopped it after.

by Khaos_Warrior on Dec 11, 2008 4:22 PM EST reply actions

So kinda like helmet-to-helmet hits in football?

If you dont duck, it is your fault?

by muto on Dec 11, 2008 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

Helmet to Helmet strikes are illegal in football. Breaking someones arm is not illegal in mma.

by Brandon on Dec 11, 2008 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

Total mismatches on this card, especially the ones where the guy that used to be in the military was ranked and his opponent was at most a B- fighter.

by zzz on Dec 11, 2008 4:26 PM EST reply actions

To the people talking sh!t about the UFC’s payment of fighters: If the UFC paid its fighters more, do you think the UFC would take that money out of their profits, or do you think they’d just raise the PPV and Ticket prices to compensate? It’s a simple business fact that extra costs are always passed on to the consumer, in one way or another. Anyone that’s ever owned a business knows what I’m talking about. So be very careful what you wish for. I think the pay structure is pretty good right where its at, the top fighters make the top bucks, and everyone else stays hungry and fights hard to make it to the top tier, so that they too can make the big bucks. Paying lower tier fighters bigger paydays is just counter productive, in my view.

by ToeLock on Dec 11, 2008 5:04 PM EST reply actions

…and leads to bankruptcy.

by Jeff on Dec 11, 2008 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

I say if you dont tap, its your own damn fault… What are the chances of escaping an armbar?? Yea VERY few to none, so the way i see it. Its be a man, admit your lose and tap out so you can fight another day…… Its not worth it, if you dont tap youll still lose the fight cuz your arm is broken.

by Maclo on Dec 11, 2008 5:04 PM EST reply actions

I agree it’s the fighters responsibilty to tap, but did anyone else think Cantwell was acting like a complete douche after the fight? I was wishing someone would hop in there and Million Dollar Baby his ass while he was screaming about breaking the guys arm like he just hit the lottery.

by Diceman on Dec 11, 2008 8:19 PM EST reply actions

as far as i am concerned,no tap arm go snap.he should have tapped “stupid ass”.cantwell was just all pumped up,first time in the big show, although he should have been concerned for al-hussan,and those comments made him look like an ass.and as far as stopping the knee fest, you have to give a fighter a chance,if he shook off the knees and came back to win all you guys would be talking a differernt story, anyhow it was a better show than chicago
