Sean Sherk: 'Id like to be the first guy' to fight Diego Sanchez at 155

"I’d like to be the first guy that fights him.... I think I match up great with him. I think his ground game is phenomenal, but so is mine. I know his conditioning is phenomenal. So is mine. His boxing … is okay. But I think it would be a great match-up. You get two guys that are really aggressive fighters who have great conditioning who are going to go and bang it out for fifteen minutes."
-- Former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk tells MMAWeekly.com that he wants to be the first to welcome Diego Sanchez to the lightweight division. "The Nightmare" recently made the decision to drop from welterweight. And UFC President Dana White reportedly confirmed that his next fight will be in the lighter class. If for some reason the match up is booked it would be one hell of a fight. It would also be throwing The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) champion into the deep end right off that bat.

I am always the first 1 to rip Sherk, but he will definatly fight anyone at any time and his last fight was fight of the night. This is the first time I have said I would like a Sherk fight. I would have to go with Diego by TKO!

sanchez wants to fight rumble johnson.. johnson called him out and he wants to mess him up.
sanchez i think isn’t gonna be a great fit in 155. he will win but he was doing ok at 170

after he said Diego Samches’ boxing is ok, he forgot to say “so is mine”.

yup sherk sure will fight anyone at anytime. if by fight you mean lay on top of them and dry hump them for fifteen minutes.

Hey, LnP is a legitimate strategy. Detestable but legitimate. That said Sherk UD. Diego’s thing is his pace. All his skills are average but his pace makes them seem very good. Sherk has a better pace and is stronger.

not to mention sanchez will not have the gas in the tank that he does at 170, so theres no way hell be able to keep up with sherk! sherk by UD!

Sherk Griffin was a great fight. I was definitely surprised by how the fight went. I thought it might be a touch boring but Griffin never does boring fights and he brought the best out of Sean.

agreed, I love it for a few reasons. every reason sherk said and the fact that sherk would lose! I’m not a sherk fan, but love diego!

I’m a big Diego fan too. And where does Sherk get off telling everyone what a great ground game he has? To me, a great ground game means having the ability to put someone down (which Sherk has) then being able to either pound them out or submit them (which Sherk does not). If he takes Diego down, I’ll take Diego by gogo.

PW i agree. sherk has fought the best of the best from ww to lw, but has come up short when he goes up against a fighter he cant just overpower. diego is a beast a ww and will be an even bigger beast at lw. sherk left the ww division to get away from guys like diego, fighters who can beat him at his own game. diego is’nt THAT small of a ww, he’s small compared to guys like gsp, fitch, alves, and mclovin, but is right on par size wize with guys like hughes, kos, karo, swick etc. i can see diego being a huge lw, sherks worst nightmare. standing diego will have the hieght and reach advantage(like most fighters do) and sherk wont be able to hold diego down. should be a great fight, but i like diego in this one.
by b.w. on Dec 10, 2008 11:14 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Diego will be a big LW, but my question is whether he will lose strength when he makes the weight cut. I’m looking forward to seeing him move down there, because I don’t see him beating the elite WW fighters. I just hope he doesn’t lose his explosiveness when he drops those 15 extra pounds.
by GregC on Dec 10, 2008 1:36 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
GREGC. yeah, the weight cut is the only thing that would worry me about diego moving down to ww. like i said, i dont think he is a small ww like sherk and stevenson were.
by b.w. on Dec 10, 2008 3:15 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
since when is a diego a beast at WW? hes a tiny WW… the weight cut is going to kill him also, hes never really cut much weight before and i think this is going to slow him down considerably… a fight against sherk is the worst thing for him, he wont be able to stop the takedowns after the 1st round! lets go sean!

Aside from BJ, Diego is going to roll through the division, Sherk included.

if he does fight and win he should get title shot against bj. but if bj beats georges i think he should vacate the title and have florian vs sanchez for it
by bryant on Dec 10, 2008 9:31 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Bj would beat Sherk even faster the 2nd time….BJ/Kenny is next for sure no doubt about it regardless of GSP/BJ
by McArthur on Dec 10, 2008 9:35 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
True. That’s the only reason we won’t see florian vs sanchez any time soon. Would be a great fight though!
by allamerican on Dec 10, 2008 9:40 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
NOW thats a FIGHT! I think its a great idea and I would really like to see that happen.
Best case scenario:
BJ beats GSP!
BJ Vacates LW title
Winner of Sherk vs. Diego fights Ken Flo for Vacant title
by john on Dec 10, 2008 9:43 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I thought Dana said BJ would defend both (which would be stupid IMO)
by McArthur on Dec 10, 2008 9:45 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
yeah except bj is not going to beat gsp~
gsp gsp gsp!!!
in my stinky opinion~ it will look more like this
gsp beats bj
diego beats sherk
bj beats kenny
bj beats diego
by stinky~fingers on Dec 10, 2008 9:48 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I’ve got a question… If Penn is LW and WW champ shouldn’t that mean that any LW who beats Penn also probably beats Penn at WW? Just sayin :)

Also there is no chance of Diego beating Sherk. It just wouldn’t happen. Is Florian the only guy with his head on straight? He is the only one actively going after BJ. I hope they give him the fight he deserves.
BJ beats GSP
Sherk beats Diego
BJ beats Florian
Sherk beats Florian (this is assuming I think Florian has a strong chance to win as well)
GSP BJ rubber match
BJ Sherk II
Florian Diego II
by Cogito Ergo Sum on Dec 10, 2008 10:09 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
i would say that if bj did win the ww title?
he should go ahead and defend both titles as champ..
but if he lost a lw fight he should lose the ww belt as well.
i dont think the lw fighter that beat him should get the ww belt.
it should just go vacant..
but if he lost the ww title while defending it?
he should still be able to defend the lw belt.
get it?
anyways~ it doesnt matter cause gsp will defend his title.
gsp gsp gsp!!!

i think sherk would beat diego, shek has fought the very best only losing to the top guys and i think diego is just one step behind him in level.
by roy on Dec 10, 2008 11:32 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
yeah. I gotta go with Sherk on this one. Diegos a great fighter but I think he’s just a little behind Sherk right now.
by Kdog on Dec 10, 2008 9:35 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Book it! That would be a sick matchup. Even though I don’t like him, I think diego would take that one if it was to happen. Sherk is a pretty good test at 155.
by allamerican on Dec 10, 2008 9:33 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Lol Sherk isn’t a good test, Sherk is THE test at 155. If you beat Sherk you should get a title shot. Florian didn’t do it and he had to work his way around Sherk, now Diego is going to find out the hard way.
by Cogito Ergo Sum on Dec 10, 2008 10:10 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
yes i think the UFC should give diego a “easy” guy first just to test him in this weight class
by JoW on Dec 10, 2008 10:58 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Well that should be left up to Diego, sure he could take an easy fight for his first fight at LW to make sure he can handle the cut but if he wants a fast track to number one contender then he should accept Sherks challenge, enough said.
by Cogito Ergo Sum on Dec 10, 2008 11:53 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
enough said cogito.. but in my opinion he still need an easy fight and then a top contender buz imagine if he lost in his first fight, he will lost credibility and i dont think the UFC wants that

by RoB on Dec 10, 2008 9:56 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
i think if this fight happens i see sherk taking a decision by taking diego down and controlling him while avoiding tons of submissions attempts, plus i think diego will gas quickly his first time down to 155, he looked pretty solid in his last fight at 170
by matt on Dec 10, 2008 10:04 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
You might have a point there Matt, but I really think that if the weight cut doesn’t affect Diego to much and he does it right, I think he will be able to take Sherk down in this fight.

I would like to see the new Kenny rematch Diego.. When Kenny lost to him.. it was at 185.
I think Kenny would beat Diego today.. at 155.
by PhilQNY on Dec 10, 2008 10:08 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Book it Dana. This would be a great fight with an insane pace. I’ve been telling my buddies that Diego needs to drop to 155 for months and I hope he is finally going to do it. I have always wanted to see Diego fight Penn at 155 so maybe that will happen down the line, espically after GSP sends Penn back to 155. And imo on Sherk, that guy is either still on roids or he really never was because in his last fight he was still that same freak of nature that he had always been.
Match-ups I’d like to see at 155:
Penn vs Ken-flo (Penn)
Sherk vs Diego (Diego in a barn burner)
Penn vs Diego for the title!
by brac on Dec 10, 2008 10:16 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I strongly believe sherk would beat diego. It upsets me that Joe Stevenson is always mentioned. I think he is not in the top5 lightweights in the UFC> he is extremely overrated. All he knows how to do is win buy guillotine choke, which is part of mma, but he wins all his fights buy guillotine choke. he cant win if his opponent knows how to defend against it.
by horny for mma on Dec 10, 2008 10:39 AM EST reply actions 0 recs

Damn diego vs anybody at LW would be insane: Griffin, Guida, Huerta, Sherk, rematch with Florian, Edgar, fuck just about anybody theres also dangerous fighters who are under radar or more like ppl kinda dont remember how good they are like: Franca, thavares, Danzing, Fisher…. fuck also loking good is Wiman, Maynard, Lil heaten Stephens DAMN… I saw in other places ppl callng diego a puss for dropping some bout him being afraid of Alves, Fitch and GSP but dude this guy goes down to an equal or deeper weight class fuck with BJ at top that doesnt seem like a puss to me..
WAR Sanchez!!

I am a huge Diego fan…he is a beast who seems very focused at the moment…i mean he kicked ali sonoma to the curb..you have to be focused and serious to give that up. Im not sure why is leaving ww he did go all rounds with fitch so he is a top ww. I also believe he might even be better at lw but rushing in against sherk right off the bat might not be a great idea (even though i think diego spanks him) you never no how youll perform dropping in weight so maybe they should feed him someone a bit weaker….o by the way gsp wins…i know i will get backlash for this..rightfully so..not taking anything from penn but he is the last of a dying breed…the hughes liddells and all these old school fighters are being out matched by new breed fighters like gsp who travel the world learning there skills…hughes liddell always trained at one gym and look at them now…all of a sudden chuck trying to train else were…sorry its a wrap
by kapp1179 on Dec 10, 2008 11:34 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
diego was thinking about going to lw after the fitch loss, but i think he’s moving down to lw now b/c dana asked him to and wants a new challenge for b.j. diego’s still a big name in the sport and i agree that he is still a top contender at ww. it’s not set in stone that diego will fight sherk just b/c sherk is calling him out. there will be a big lay-off for florian in between him beating stevenson and bj fighting gsp. there very well could be a rematch of diego/kenny for a shot at b.j. i know dana has said that kenny is guaranteed a title shot regardless if he fights again, but dana has said that before and kenny might want revenge for that loss and his loss to sherk. anyway you look at it, thw ufc’s lw division just got even more exciting.
by b.w. on Dec 10, 2008 1:42 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
A lot of fans are saying that he made the move because Alves scared him, I do not think so. He got a descision with Koscheck when he was only 50%. And Alves recently just took Koscheck to a descision, so I do not think Alves bothers him at all. I think it was how easily GSP beat up and destroyed Jon Fitch. Diego did not even come close to ovverpwering or beating up Fitch even though he put up a good fight and went for plenty of submissions, GSP beat Fitch with ease. That fight probably showed him the level that GSP is at is not a realistic goal he can set himself. I have always liked Diego, he always brings it to the Octagan and cannot wait to see him in the lighter division. Could you imagine the pressure and pace he would bring to BJ if they fought.

I don’t think the cut will be that big of a deal for diego because he only weighs about 168 or so anyway all the time. I ain’t a fan of either of them so I would love to watch bj beat them up for a few rounds. I also think depending on where the fight takes place bj (on the ground) bj can beat gsp, standing gsp dominates.
