Do or die: Josh Koscheck UFC Fight Night 16 interview exclusive with MMAmania.com

Josh Koscheck doesn't like losing.

After back-to-back wins over Dustin Hazelett and Chris Lytle , Koscheck came off the bench to replace an injured Diego Sanchez on just two weeks notice to battle rising star Thiago Alves at UFC 90 back on October 25.

He didn't win.

Now -- less than six weeks removed from the loss -- the former collegiate national champion wrestler is slated to headline UFC Fight Night 16: "Fight for the Troops" against the very dangerous Japanese fighter, Yoshiyuki Yoshida.

That's a tough fight for anyone in the welterweight division ... much less someone coming off a loss to the bruising Brazilian.

Koscheck knows what is at stake -- he put himself in this position. And now he feels as if his back is up against the wall. He needs to win or risk dropping farther back in the pack in the very competitive 170-pound title contender chase.

We recently caught up with the former contestant on the inaugural season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) to get his thoughts on the Alves fight, how he plans to topple "Zenko" later tonight, who he feels is the next 155-pound champion, contract issues and much, much more.

Let's get to it:

mania definitely has an in at AKA, and thats really cool! Kos must not have read the comments after his last interview with mania, I don’t remember too many positive ones! I’m not a big fan of Kos, but am not going to say anything too negative about him! He’s improved his game, but at this point, he’s nothing more than the gatekeeper! I don’t see him beating any “top tier” WW’s, and he and fitch won’t fight, I’m not a big fan of butt buddies not fighting! Mania, great questions, must have been like interviewing a rock!

i like Kos he’s a jerk but a good fighter, i say he’s kinda the guy you love to hate.i woulda like him to beat alves, but whatever he stepped up and nows he is fighting again. do it Kos

It’s LOOSIN’ time Kos!!

by Syd[a.k.a."The Negation"] on Dec 10, 2008 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

Mania, I would like to say much props to you and your entire staff for your work today. You kept the threads flowing with thought provoking news and interviews. Nothing worse then a slow mma news day (even though its not your fault)… I Bitch when its slow so its only right that I give props when u NAIL it! Good stuff man….Much Appreciated!

by john on Dec 10, 2008 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

you know what john, I got to agree! Ever since me and mania got into it (with the exception of 1 2 hour and 40 minute moderation), the comments have been flowing a lot smoother! great job mania!

by kevin on Dec 10, 2008 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

mania, how much time were you given for this interview with Kos? Cuz I know a fellow blogger of mine over at Fightticker.com interviewed him like 2 weeks ago and was just given like 8 minutes or something and he answered real short to each question. Shit like that. He prob had more time today with training camp done and everything…

by Anthony on Dec 10, 2008 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

Kevin, you obviously don’t know what a gatekeeper is. Koscheck went 3 rounds the the current WW champ without sustaining much damage, and went 3 rounds with a monster in Thiago Alves with only a few weeks’ notice. He’s ranked 4th in the world in a STACKED division.

A gatekeeper is more like a Josh Burkman type of guy. Maybe even Chris Lytle.

And now you know, and knowing half the battle. GOOOOOO JOE!

by JeffB on Dec 11, 2008 1:20 AM EST up reply actions

This is a good interview, didnt mean to change the topic. I think Yoshida pulls off the upset tonight.

by horny for mma on Dec 10, 2008 3:01 PM EST reply actions

koscheck is definitely overlooking yoshida… “just want to get the win and go home, havent watched ANY footage on him…” im calling for a zenko TKO or choke in the second!!!

by brendan on Dec 10, 2008 6:18 PM EST up reply actions

hey Kevin…what’s your theory about MMAMANIA interviews again??

by McArthur on Dec 10, 2008 3:03 PM EST reply actions

what do you mean?
I’d rather watch them like mmarated, but do get that a bunch of you guys read them at work
I also think they have an “in” at AKA ie: fitch wearing the T-shirt, swick, kos etc.
the interviews are always good, no complaints, the guy getting interviewed isn’t though!
mania, why take horny’s question down, I liked it!

by kevin on Dec 10, 2008 3:11 PM EST up reply actions

Good interview as always. I’m far from being a Kos fan, but I think he has really improved his image in the last year or two. He has been far more respectful of his opponents and the fans and it’s good to see. I’ll still be rooting for Yoshida, but Kos is definitely moving in the right direction. The fact that he has become a much more exciting and well rounded fighter is also can’t hurt him in the eyes of the fans.

by GregC on Dec 10, 2008 3:11 PM EST reply actions

He definitely has. I’m not a big Kos fan either, but he came across real good in this interview. Gotta give him props for that!

by LJ on Dec 10, 2008 3:20 PM EST up reply actions

Koscheck has little to gain from winning this fight, but falls a long way if he loses. If he wins, perception will remain that he is a notch beneath the top 4-5 in the division. If Yoshida wins and looks impressive, it will immediately vault him toward the top of the food chain in the division. It looks like a tough fight on paper, and I at least have to give Koscheck credit for taking a tough opponent so soon after his last loss with little to gain if he prevails.

by CL on Dec 10, 2008 4:00 PM EST up reply actions

I agree. I have never been a Kos fan. In most of his interviews he doesn’t even bother to try and hide his cockiness and arrogance, but it was not the case in this interview, he actually came across as being a descent guy something I never thought that I would ever say about him. It looks like he is finally maturing as a fighter and a person. He even complimented Diego, I have to give him credit for that.

by Ade on Dec 10, 2008 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

Great job Mania! You definatly tried. Now onto Koscheck. He is so full of sh*t it is unbelievable. Even his coaches are pissed at him for the Alves fight and you called him out on it. I love it… And he is unapologetic about it. And he seems pretty happy about Diego’s move to 155. Probably because Koscheck barely beat a half dead Diego and he would never beat a 100% Diego. And he said ne doesn’t watch his fights, then 5 seconds later he said he has seen most of his fights. LMAO. Koschek you will always be the 2nd biggest douche in the UFC right behind Hughes!

by BNF on Dec 10, 2008 3:13 PM EST reply actions

I agree, if diego/kos 3 were to happen, diego wins! I just want someone to finish this prick!

by kevin on Dec 10, 2008 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

Good post BNF! I agree on all counts. Right now Kos is in a close battle with Frank MIr over who is the second biggest Douche in mma. We all know Hughes is a shoe in for 1st!

I actually believe that Diego would not only beat Kos, but he would have a great chance at finishing him. Right now Diego is the better striker and the more diverse ground fighter who can win by subs or by G n P. Kos can take Diego down, but Diego’s jits is top of the line and he would have no trouble sweeping Kos and putting him on his back!

I really hope that Yoshida dumps him on his head tonight! I cant stand Koschek and I dont really enjoy his fights except when he gets his ass kicked like what my boy Alves did to him!

by john on Dec 10, 2008 5:39 PM EST up reply actions

You’re nuts Diego is yesterday’s news.Koscheck rapes him again dumbass!

by danawhiteisascumbag on Dec 10, 2008 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

He seems pretty laid back lately, very cool interview, actually starting to like Kos; a little humility and respect go a long way; too bad, I already bet the $$ on Yoshida.

by O damn he got caught on Dec 10, 2008 3:20 PM EST reply actions

The fact that Kos doesn’t know anything about him strengthens our imperative to chose Yoshida. He probly thinks that his judo work with camarillo and his wrestling will be enough.

by NameNotRequired on Dec 10, 2008 3:30 PM EST up reply actions

Yea I caught that too, that seems to be an outdated practice; not watching anything on an opponent before the fight could be a way to set yourself up for some surprises.

by O damn he got caught on Dec 10, 2008 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

ya…that seems to be the opposite of what good fighters do…how can NOT watching film improve his chances

by McArthur on Dec 10, 2008 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

That actually seems quite fitting for him, considering he doesn’t listen to his coaches either.

by BNF on Dec 10, 2008 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

If Kos wins he should fight maybe Kampman or Karo

by McArthur on Dec 10, 2008 3:22 PM EST reply actions

I guess I could only hope for a double KO if he fought Karo.

by BNF on Dec 10, 2008 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

you’re not kidding, that would be a great fight if it were a “lose must retire” match! and it was a draw! no winner=2 losers

by kevin on Dec 10, 2008 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

Hey guys get ready to see koscheck get mutted on the ground.
Hopefully Yoshida puts him in a deep coma. haaa

by CARNAGE on Dec 10, 2008 3:23 PM EST reply actions

Great Interview- It’s kinda weird that Josh doesn’t really like to watch his fights, or on his opponents- the reason why couture is so great is cuz he breaks down everything of his opponents and makes a great plan focusing on their weak points- great interview again i know its for fighting for the troops, just hate the they are their protecting crap. I’m picking josh on this one, and does anyone know if Swick also trains with AKA?? If not i’d like to see josh fight swick

by ricky on Dec 10, 2008 3:27 PM EST reply actions

MANIA. excellent job on all the interviews you guys have been doing. it seems like you guys have at least 4 or 5 good ones a week! as far as someone mentioning mmarated goes, i hear they are going out of business. i guess all those on the site video interviews with ariel made them go bankrupt. your still the best! :)

by b.w. on Dec 10, 2008 3:34 PM EST reply actions

oh no, i know jesse holland has a hard on for ariel, mania are you going to hire him?

by kevin on Dec 10, 2008 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

nice interview. way to push Kos on the tough questions. i like that guy more and more with every fight. he never backs down, that’s for sure.

by wagnerav on Dec 10, 2008 3:37 PM EST reply actions

hey adam, how do you guys determine who interviews who?
is there a solid “in” at aka?

by danawhiteisascumbag on Dec 10, 2008 6:26 PM EST up reply actions

completely strange how people who previously disliked kos are slowly becoming fans where I was a kos fan from the begining and am now not as much a fan.

I wont fight fitch I wont fight swick there my life long buddies and training partners that iv known for about 3 years

Hey kos how about you’ll fight who ever the fuck the uFC tells you fight this guy is 30 years old I think and when it came to fighting the elite he came up short thats all there is to it he needs to win this fight for sure and he better develop some type of submission game or he will never reach his goals of being a UFC champ

If matt hughes was in his prime today he still wouldnt be able to beat gsp or alves

by dia mette on Dec 10, 2008 4:09 PM EST reply actions

Hughes beat GSP one time!

by yoda on Dec 10, 2008 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

I think he means Hughes in his prime vs. today’s GSP. And I’m not becoming a fan of Kos, but I don’t hate him as much as I used to. That being said, I completely agree about him refusing to fight Fitch and Swick. That eliminates two of the more interesting fights he could be a part of at WW. Also, I wonder if he would be saying the same thing if Fitch has beat GSP. Do those three have an agreement (like Shogun and Wanderlei in Pride)that if one wins the title then the other two still won’t fight for the belt until he loses?

by GregC on Dec 10, 2008 4:47 PM EST up reply actions

I like Koscheck, but his response to the question about his trainers comments about the game plan was concerning. Josh needs to realize that just as many of these fighters will never be at his level of wrestling, he may never be at their level of striking — at least not for several more years of training and fighting. And he is especially not going to be at Alves’ level any time soon.

The response I would have liked to hear from Koscheck is, “Yeah, they’re right. I may have gotten away from the game plan. I don’t want to make any excuses though.”

I appreciate his desire and dedication to evolve as an MMA fighter, but he needs to use striking to supplement his already amazing wrestling abilities — not vice versa.

by Soups on Dec 10, 2008 4:14 PM EST reply actions

Just another one of the many reasons why I don’t like Koscheck. Even if you don’t agree with your coaches, do you think an interview is really the place to seem unapologetic about not following their instructions? He must be smarter than his whole team of coaches.

by BNF on Dec 10, 2008 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

Koscheck is the employer, he pays his coaches and the coaches work for him. So if he wants to publicly disagree with their public statements, I don’t see a problem with that. Whether it’s a smart move to ignore their advice in a fight is a different story.

by cmon on Dec 10, 2008 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

yes and no! does he pay them? I don’t know that! A lot of guys train for free as long as they teach a few times a week, their name brings people into the gym!
secondly, what’s the point of having a coach if he’s not going to listen? The best fighters in the world (which Kos will never be) bring in coaches and training partners with the purpose of coming up with a way to win..or a game plan! what’s the point of brining people in if you’re not going to listen to them? he might as well just roll and spar with fitch and swick, continue to be the guy who will never get a title shot and be happy making 20k a fight!

by kevin on Dec 10, 2008 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

“I wanted to fight the way I wanted to fight. I’m always going to fight the way I want to fight.”

One of the worst quotes ever… Combine that with the fact he doesn’t watch any tape of his opponets and you have the perfect recipe for a good fighter, but a guy who will never be considered great.

by BNF on Dec 10, 2008 5:10 PM EST up reply actions

Well said Kevin. They probably pay him!

by BNF on Dec 10, 2008 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, well said, if that’s true. But we don’t know that it’s true, so I’m going to assume that he actually pays for the professional coaching. I agree though that it’s stupid to ignore the coaches’ advice on a game plan, especially if Kos is not even watching tape on his opponent. That means that his coaches most likely are watching footage and would have a much more informed game plan than Kos.

by cmon on Dec 10, 2008 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

I think it’s safe to assume that bob cook (as a manager) gets a piece, but if matt major is staying there and training with no money, I’d be willing to bet “stars” like fitch and swick and kos are training for nothing just to bring paying customers into the gym! I think my assumption is the safe one. anyone who trains have any thoughts…phil???

by kevin on Dec 10, 2008 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

The more time passes, the more I’m starting to like KO’s, ever since he lost to GSP, I think it’s because he’s toned it down, seems more mature than egotistical, time and a few losses have humbled him a bit. He has a solid fighting/competitive mentality which always earns my respect.

by THORAZINE on Dec 10, 2008 4:22 PM EST reply actions

Great interview. Glad it was posted.

by the matt king on Dec 10, 2008 4:37 PM EST reply actions

He needs to realize wrestling is THE most important factor in MMA controlling where the fight goes, he doesn’t train properly in his wrestling and is most likely the reason he lost his last two fights. Gsp and alves hands down are better strikers than him but the guy wants the ko so badly he’s delusional. When a guy is afraid of your shots he’ll be less effective with his striking, it seems alves had next to no respect for koschecks shots and he rarely shot and only did up against the fence. The guy seriously needs to start training on his wrestling again an quit thinking he’s anderson silva. The only guy who will beat silva will be a great wrestler and bjj specialist.

by nathan on Dec 10, 2008 5:02 PM EST reply actions

I agree completely, Kos’s wrestling has diminished due to lack of training. He admitted that he really doesn’t work on it anymore, but it’s what got him to the UFC in the first place! Like someone else said above, his striking should supplement his wrestling, not the other way around. He didn’t lose to Alves because he “chose” to stand, he lost because he couldn’t take Alves down and was forced to stand!

by cmon on Dec 10, 2008 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

Ei, Where TF is Chase at! He should be all heaps and praises about his idol’s interview right here! Hehe!

by Syd[a.k.a."The Negation"] on Dec 10, 2008 5:26 PM EST reply actions

I hope Josh isn’t burned up from hitting it hard the last couple of months without time for adequate rest. He sounded just a tad tired to me in the earlier video. Plus he’s coming in a little light as well. I like Josh a lot as a fighter. People fail to see his humor and he pushes people’s buttons but I get it. Good luck Kos! Kick some ass!
