Roger Huerta signs five-fight contract extension with the UFC

Apparently cooler heads have prevailed.

After a very public battle between fighter and promoter, talented lightweight Roger Huerta (20-2-1) has signed a new five-fight contract with the UFC according to MMAWeekly.com.

This of course comes on the heels of Huerta's bombshell in Fight! magazine last August when he revealed that he wasn't pleased with his contractual arrangement with the UFC. In addition, he was seemingly ticked that the promotion twisted his UFC 87 pre-fight interviews to insinuate that his fight with Kenny Florian would be a "cake walk" (Huerta was actually comparing the fight to his rough and tumble upbringing).

Huerta lost to Florian via unanimous decision and afterward tried to provide some context to the controversial remarks he made just before the fight. His statements clearly agitated UFC President Dana White who referred to Huerta — once considered the Latino golden boy who could do no wrong — as a "moron."

Prior to his new contract, "El Matador" had one fight remaining with the UFC and there was speculation that he and the promotion were "far apart" on reaching an agreement. Some of Huerta's demands included a guaranteed six-figures per fight as well as points on the PPV - a better deal than current lightweight champion BJ Penn enjoys.

Sounds pretty outrageous but I guess like Jon Fitch and Randy Couture before that, all's forgiven once pen touches paper.

It's also interesting to note that Huerta is confirmed as being on the roster for the upcoming release of the 'UFC Undisputed 2009' video game set to hit shelves this Spring.

I don’t come here to bash, but come on Nish. I didnt know we still had some 15 year olds here in the forum who get excited for leaving the 1st comment. Who are you really pointing that out to? If your comment is at the very top Nish, I think everyone can comprehend that you were the first to comment. Good luck with that.

Huerta vs. Nover!

Let’s see this happen if Nover can win TUF this season.

The sportsmanship and country pride have been built through boxing and most recently De La Hoya vs. Pacquaio. I think this would also be an exciting fight between two hard hitting young guns in the 155 division.

by TabascoSAUCE on Dec 9, 2008 11:24 PM EST up reply actions

That would be a very entertaining fight. I think Nover has more technical stand up and BJJ, but Huerta’s always got a chance if he can turn it into a fast paced brawl. I don’t think the UFC would put Nover up against Huerta in his first fight after the show, but after a fight or two I could definitely see that one happening.

by GregC on Dec 10, 2008 1:35 AM EST up reply actions

you guys are way ahead of yourselves! Lets forget about NOver for like a year, you guys are already ready to mtch him up with Huerta? Like all tUF winners, Nover will be brought along slowly and coddled for about a year. So leave his name out of big match ups against guys like Huerta.

The rumor that I hear is:
Huerta vs. Stevenson in London at UFC 95….. Not sure how true that is, but i figured I pass along what I hear!

who cares. he will NEVER be champ! shut up and enjoy your 25k/25k show win..douche!

Dirty smelly Pirate hooker (watching anchor man). hahaha
Its good that the UFC re signed Huerta. U is not a finished fighter yet, he has so much room to grow and he will be a MONSTER in about 2 years. 2 young and Marketable to let go!

He’s a good test for people making their debut- your alvin robinsons and alberto cranes of the world. Anyone who won’t go toe to toe with him wins.

Great news! he’s one of my favorite fighters cuz he’s a true warrior. he’s exciting to watch and the boy gots a huge heart.

by Who Am i on Dec 9, 2008 8:19 PM EST reply actions

I’m really sick of the heart comment. skill, toughness, technique and will make a winner. heart is overrated!! that’s my opinion!

by kevin on Dec 9, 2008 8:23 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with you that he will never be champ. I would probably consider him B to B+ level, but not overrated. How about them Niners this past weekend?

by the_mexicutioner on Dec 9, 2008 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

I think that he was overrated before the Florian fight, but isn’t anymore. I think people made too much of the fact that he was 6-0 in the UFC, because all of his opponents were making their UFC debuts. But after the Florian fight I think it’s pretty clear that he’s a tough, solid fighter but he doesn’t have elite skills at this point in his career. And as far as the Niners go, that was a great win against the Jets, and Mike Singletary is a huge step up from Mike Nolan.

by GregC on Dec 9, 2008 9:00 PM EST up reply actions

If heart isn’t important how did Griffin earn his strap (if you believe that he earn’t it…). he’s certainly not brimming with skill and technique???

by Rilly on Dec 9, 2008 8:33 PM EST up reply actions

I have to agree, pound on him for a while and he will quit like everyone else..

by shamo84 on Dec 9, 2008 8:46 PM EST up reply actions

If you think that you should rewatch his fight against Guida. He was being beaten pretty convincingly for the first two rounds but still hung in there and choked him out after catching him with a big knee in the third.

by GregC on Dec 9, 2008 8:55 PM EST up reply actions

Looks like losing to Florian infused the kid with some much needed humility. Good news all around, since he sure seems like a good kid.

by Rich B on Dec 9, 2008 8:32 PM EST reply actions

War Huerta. Dana White is a pratt & i hope Roger took twice as much as Dana wanted to fork out.

by Rilly on Dec 9, 2008 8:34 PM EST reply actions

they all talk big, and then dana goes balls deep from behind and then its business as usual.

by day1er on Dec 9, 2008 8:37 PM EST reply actions

Dana White is an arrogant piece a shit!

I would be too if the world’s most dangerous fighters regularly begged me for chances all the time. I would like to think I would less of a straight dick-head, but can’t say for sure. I might kick bitches out of my Ferrari just to bring up kickin’ bitches out my Ferrari in casual conversation.

Yeah good news…
he is a greatfighter if he can focus his undeniable crazy paced onsaughlt in a technical way oh boy oh boy he will be contender in no time… he has great cardio, great HEART & is very very hard to finish in any position: wether it be on feet, rocked on ground, mounted or even with a BJJ black belt on his back.. no doubt this guy can be champion some day but needs to learn how to be technical and effective with standup when needed. IMO

by hector on Dec 9, 2008 9:19 PM EST reply actions

Well, as many of you know, I FUCKIN HATE THIS DUDE!

He’ll be dropped as soon as he faces decent competition and loses repeatedly!

Would love to see a rematch with Guida after Guida pounds out Diaz!

by SoCalStunNa on Dec 9, 2008 9:31 PM EST reply actions

Im so sick and tired of everyone bashing Dana. This is the guy along with the Fertita brothers that bought the UFC and turned it into what, we all on here love to watch, blog, thread, talk, eat, sleep about. Dana is cocky and arrogant, but in my opinion he has earned the right to be that way. Everyone always hears about dana being a dick. You all know that behind the scene’s Dana helps out with charitable organizations. Lets see he is putting on a show tomorrow for the Intrepid fallen hero’s fund. This is the guy that took the UFC out of the dumps and brought it to what it is today. Look i know the fighters dont make the money that we think they should. But im sure with endorsements that they are very well taken care of. Get off Dana’s Ass everyone an let him run his business, you know the one that we love to watch and enjoy

they sign him cuz the UFC know that they can make a lot of money with this kid
WAR HUERTA!!!!

by JoW on Dec 9, 2008 11:17 PM EST up reply actions

Note: ROGER HUERTA (full grown, of legal age, capable of signing his own mark, able to read, Roger Huerta)signed the contract. PLease, no more whining until he fulfills this contract. It is what it is and nobody forced him to sign it. Wether you ever think it was a great business decision for him or not is irrelevant, because HE SIGNED THE CONTRACT!

by Jrandolph on Dec 9, 2008 11:12 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, there were no better options, so he signed it, I’m sure Dana didn’t budge much if at all, but Heurta shouldn’t make all that he was asking for… maybe if he was a boxer, but he isn’t!
