Marcus Davis: UFC 93 bout against Chris Lytle 'potentially legendary'

Props: Yahoo! Sports
Quoteworthy:
"Chris and I have spoken a number of times about this fight and we know the opportunity that it gives us. That's why we were so desperate to get it organized. We're aiming for more than just Fight of the Night. We think our styles and the way we fight match up really, really well and that this fight could potentially project us into a sort of legendary status. I want to be remembered in this sport, and this fight is my chance to make sure that happens."
UFC welterweight Marcus Davis (15-4) hypes his upcoming fight against Chris Lytle (26-16-5) at UFC 93: "Henderson vs. Franklin," which will take place at The O2 Arena in Dublin, Ireland on January 17. Davis is calling in several radio interviews for Lytle to keep this fight standing, adding that whoever takes the match to the ground will be branded a pussy. Believe it or not neither the "Irish Hand Grenade" nor "Lights Out" have ever been stopped by strikes in their respective mixed martial arts careers. That could all change in early 2009 … at least for one fighter.

Ok I’m excited. I’m going with Lytle since Paul Taylor almost KOed Davis.

this fight could be like the Mickey Ward/Arturo Gotti of mma. 2 fighters who will probably never rule their weight division, but will put on a very entertaining war b/c they are so evenly skilled.

what is davis talking about, the first time lytle talked about fighting marcus he treated lytle like he didn’t deserve to fight him.

good point! might be bad karma for davis.

Both Lytle and Davis set that up. There is a article about it.

legendary…no!
great fight…yes!
I think these guys are hyping this fight pretty well for two under achievers! I think it will be a good fight. I like both fighters! I’ll pick Marcus Davis just because I’m from outside of boston! either way, has fight of the night possibilities!

THese two are running there mouths acting like its going to be the 2nd coming of forrest vs. Bonnar 1. THey are both promising
a all out stand up war, but I guarantee that 1/3 of the fight will take place on the ground.
Close fight, but I would have to pick Marcus. Lytle’s defense is weak. He blocks too many punches with his face and thats not going to work against Marcus. Also, Typically Marcus has the better conditioning and fighter with the most gas usually wins.

There is so much hype over this fight. Probly the one fight with the highest probability of ending with a cut stoppage in the 2st!!

not to cvall you out, but did you mean 1st or second. You said 2st. Looks like “toost”.

Damn right Utapout. Still amazes me that i haven’t gotten busted yet.

Yep. Lytle is very much of the Ken Shamrock school of striking defense…He blocks punches with his face.
by RobH86 on Dec 8, 2008 8:17 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I bet Lytle would cry if he knew he was being compared to Shammy…I know I would if I was a pro MMA fighter…lol
by --utaptout-- on Dec 8, 2008 9:18 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Just a joke. I don’t like mentioning any fighter in the same sentence as Shamrock. It’s not fair on them unless their name is Tim Sylvia or Kimjoke Slice.

Does anything think a submission is a possibility in this match?
by MMA EXPERT on Dec 8, 2008 6:06 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Always possible, just not very likely IMO.
by medecine balls on Dec 8, 2008 6:10 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Lytle’s got very strong Jiu-Jitsu skills. I’m pretty sure he was was a purple belt on TUF 4 and when he fought Hughes. He may very well be a brown belt by now. A sub is a definite possibility. That may be the reason that Davis is asking Lytle to stand with him. More likely though, they both have excellent boxing backgrounds, and he wants to test his skill vs. Lytles. I’d rather see a standup war personally.
by --utaptout-- on Dec 8, 2008 6:11 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Most of Lytle’s wins are by submission.
This is a fight fan’s fight right here…
by Luppers on Dec 8, 2008 6:30 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Davis has a pretty good ground game and can slap on the subs too. I don’t think hes scared of Lytle on the ground.
by paniczoo on Dec 9, 2008 1:55 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
he was a black belt when he fought hughes already.
by shamo84 on Dec 8, 2008 7:56 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Thanks for the info…I didn’t realize that.
by --utaptout-- on Dec 8, 2008 9:19 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Both fighters have a history of being cut easily. Stoppage due to cuts is a strong possibility either way. If I were to give this fight a theme name…..it would be “There Will Be Blood.”

I really like both fighters, but I don’t see it propelling either one to legend status. Both are good boxers, with good technical skills, but neither’s ground game is good enough to make a legend. It might get fight of the night, especially because its in Ireland and all, but I think Hendo/Franklin is a better fight. I’m also really looking forward to Shogun/Coleman, but only because I’m excited to see Shogun avenge his lossto that dried up old has-been.
by --utaptout-- on Dec 8, 2008 6:07 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
i think he means this fight will be legend.. it doesnt mean he has to do anything else in his career if this fights as good as they say it will be itll be on al those ufc unleashed shows and espn highlights etc

Yes I think you’re right, now that I take a second look at the quote. I agree that this might be a legendary war. The only thing that bugs me though, is that Davis looked really bad against Mike Swick.

’coz of the alleged shoulder injury…

I train casually at the same gym as Lytle.
WAR LYTLE!
HE PUT ME IN MY FIRST TRIANGLE CHOKE!

Lytle literally devirginized you, in a triangle choke sorta way, hehe!

really…i gotta go with davis. he might not win by knockout. tko sounds more likely over lytle. either way, i just cant wait to see this fight.
by allamerican on Dec 8, 2008 6:08 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Waw, bold words there…LEgendary? Beat unbeatable opponents and notch a string of wins first Marky-marc before we place you on legendary status…In any case, make Lytle’s face explode with your Irish hand grenade!
by Syd[a.k.a. "The Negation"] on Dec 8, 2008 6:08 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
IMO Marcus has the better standup. His punches are straighter and crisper, Lytle throws bombs but they are looping punches. Lytle does have a great chin, but I see him getting stopped by ground and pound.
by Jake on Dec 8, 2008 6:16 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Davis’s ground game is not on the same level as Lytle’s. He’s not bad, but he’s not nearly as good as Lytle. Lytle COULD beat Davis on the ground but they both have excellent pro boxing credentials, and it’d be great to see a technicalo striking match.
by --utaptout-- on Dec 8, 2008 6:44 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think this will be a great fight as well, but wasnt Davis kind of poo-pooing it at first thinking it might be a step down fighting Chris before it got finalized.
by Kung Foo on Dec 8, 2008 6:16 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
yeah he was, but i guess now that theres nothing he can do about it, he might as well hype it up
by brendan on Dec 8, 2008 7:21 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
This fight will be an all out war. I can’t wait to see it. I have to give it to Davis by second round stoppage. It’s going to be tough though. Lytle is one of the hardest fighters to stop… 14 losses by decision and 2 by cut. I’m predicting his first loss that isn’t a cut or a decision.
by Budgell on Dec 8, 2008 6:19 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
im going with davis via armbar or leglock =) but i hope a stand up war first………….
by JoW on Dec 8, 2008 6:35 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Do people on here even WATCH the fights? Davis is NOT going to submit Lytle. Davis is a somewhat one dimensional striker. He’s evolved some, but Lytle is a WAY better ground fighter, even though he looked bad against Kos and Hughes. He doesn’t fare well against wrestlers, but his jiujitsu is very solid and a few notches above Davis’s. Davis has submitted a few guys before, but not the caliber of Chris.
by --utaptout-- on Dec 8, 2008 6:49 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
first of all anything can happen in MMA and second I CAN see davis submitting chris after a good punches
by JoW on Dec 8, 2008 7:46 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
haha ok i went to far with the armbar , but what about a guillotine………..
by JoW on Dec 8, 2008 7:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
After he rocks Lytle, a sub from Davis is a possibility…excellent point JoW
by --utaptout-- on Dec 8, 2008 9:21 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
mm i dont know if you was sarcastic but ill take that haha
by JoW on Dec 9, 2008 2:37 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
lol…nope I was serious…I sometimes forget that subs often come after a guy has been rocked
by --utaptout-- on Dec 9, 2008 8:55 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Marcus is going crazy!! Legendary status?? 3 months ago he was saying lytle wasnt worthy of fighting him..
I hope davis gets knocked silly!!!
by mike22 on Dec 8, 2008 6:43 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
sounds to me like davis is really trying to avoid lyte’s ground game.
by Chuck Woolery on Dec 8, 2008 7:21 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
For real. It’s MMA, Marcus. I really like you man, but you guys are gonna bang back and forth, eventually hitting the mat where Lytle will find an opening and submit you!

The winner of this fight will stay afloat in their division, while the loser will fall off the WW map.

SO EXCITED FOR … what was the one guy’s name again?

davis is an idiot, if lytle takes davis down it does not mesn lytle is a pussy. It means davis has no ground game. if you have no ground game you are in the wrong business.

Anybody else read the article? Anybody besides me have visions of Gary Shaw and Seth Petruzelli when they read the following? Keywords are agreement, cooked up, stand-up, opportunity, and organized.
" he went on to add that he and Lytle have cooked up a unique agreement with each other.
The welterweights are promising to go all-out to ensure that the fight goes down in the history books as one of the GREATEST STAND-UP WARS EVER.
“Chris and I have spoken a number of times about this fight and we know the opportunity that it gives us,” Davis told Eurosport-Yahoo! “That’s why we were so desperate to get it organised.”
by Jason on Dec 8, 2008 10:59 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I dont get Davis. He looks great about 7 fights in a row, although they were all cans, then gets Swick and does nothing. Including standing up. This seems like the battle of the gatekeepers, but Im picking Lytle because he is just flat out tougher, he handled the punishment Kos laid on him. He can handle anything Davis throws at him.
BTW Marcus, your legendary fight might not even make the main card pal.

I think that this will be great fight thatcould go either way.I am hoping for a 15 minute war, which is likely.

there both great boxers, this will be a war, i no davis was the new england section boxing champ, and lytle is the indiana state boxing champ, someones getting ktfo

I doubt the fight will be legendary, but it will be a damn good one.
Lytle will hopefully be using one of my bands songs for his entrance music as he did for his last fight with the UFL.
