Affliction MMA boxed in by Golden Boy promotions on January 24

With friends like these, who needs enemies?
Golden Boy Promotions is hosting a welterweight superfight between four-time world champion "Sugar" Shane Mosley and Mexican sensation Antonio Margarito on January 24, the same date as Affliction's "Day of Reckoning" pay-per-view card that features the main event of Andre Arlovski vs. Fedor Emelianenko according to the LA Times via Steve Cofield .
Originally scheduled for the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, the boxing card was repackaged and shipped to Los Angeles following some legal funny business involving Mosely and the oxygen-boosting drug EPO.
This would have been the perfect opportunity for Affliction and Golden Boy to deliver on a long-rumored co-promotion that would feature a mixed line-up of boxing and mixed martial arts warriors duking it out at the same event.
Imagine the success of Mosely-Margarito and Arlovski-Emelianenko on the same card.
However that idea was scrapped after Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com that criticism of merging the sports led to the decision to scrap the idea.
The companies still planned to promote the "Day of Reckoning" card, but this new development is hardly a helping hand.
With the boxing bash going down at the nearby Staples Center, it could effectively draw much of the local interest in combat sports away from the Affliction card and into the hands of boxing.
This is not the first roadblock the Affliction card has faced. "Day of Reckoning" was originally slated to go down on October 11, 2008, in Las Vegas before being postponed due to certain "obstacles" that Affliction VP Tom Atencio attributes to the UFC's stranglehold on MMA in Sin City.
It would appear the apparel company is now competing against itself with Mosely-Margarito just down the block, but to date no one can even say what the actual relationship is between Affliction and Golden Boy - if one exists at all.
From boxing promoter Bob Arum:
"We knew Staples (Center) was available, and we made a deal figuring we might as well take the fight to where these fighters' fans are."
This could be the first time ever that UFC President Dana White was a fan of Bob Arum.

In which quarter of 09 do you guys think Affliction will fail? Also anyone see Atencio getting pissed off on Fight game with Straka? He put those guys on blast trying to defend all the dumb moves he’s making. He even claimed that “hardcore” fans want to see Yvel. WTF?? I don’t.

question: Can Arlovski use his footwork and a machida-like stick and move tactics to dethrone King Fedor?
Arlovski’s head movement isn’t that great unfortunately and Fedor embodies the Russian style of footwork, jumping in and out on your toes, so it’ll be hard to beat him there sort of like when Mirko tried using his usual stalking method on Fedor. If he wasn’t worried about Fedor grabbing and taking him down it would be easier for him to get inside Fedor’s hooks and hit him straight down the middle like Fujita. I don’t think AA has the footwork or defensive skills (head movement being the biggest issue) right now to play that strategy too well.
I definitely do like the idea of using a lot of leg strikes to keep Fedor from dominating the tempo of the fight then getting Fedor when he jumps in with those big hooks. Imo, Fedor’s main openings appear when he gets a bit relaxed and when he throws those haymakers as he drops his guard, but he pulls his guard up and jumps out of range faster than anyone or else grabs his opponent. AA’s very good, but his defense is easily the weakest part of his stand-up so an aggressive strategy might be required to keep Fedor from moving in and out. Fedor likes to keep moving, then jump in at the moment he sees an opening, generally a very good strategy against Arlovski if AA isn’t pressing forward hard.
Maybe if AA uses leg shots to keep Fedor in a set range and then presses him with his hands (he strings together shots beautifully) he will be able to get Fedor to throw a defensive hook at he wrong moment (he likes to pull away or grab his opponent under pressure but otherwise will usually throw a hook), without a lot of forward momentum. AA has good aim and hand speed and might well be able to get in and land well if that happens. However, with questionable defense and toughness this is still a risky strategy if Fedor gets in on him.

I think Machida’s stick and move works better in the cage. Fedor is also better at slipping punches. I think leg kicks are very risky. Maybe inside leg kicks might keep him at bay off balance when he comes in but outside ones give too many openings for him catch and get inside. His kicks also don’t do enough damage to really cripple a fighter or make them nervous ala Alves. He pretty much needs to stand his ground and work the jab coz he’s not good at countering. Mind you he also needs to avoid the clinch at all cost during this. I bet you anytihng that fedor is looking for a clinch takedown because arlovski’s bottom game has consistently gone down.

I agree! If they Clinch, its OVER because Fedor will throw him on the ground, G n P AWAY, until he gets the opening for a submission!

Atencio needs to wake up and realize Fedor alone isn’t going to get people other than hardcore fans to cough up $40.00 for their PPV.The guy has not put together a good undercard for a great main event.I like Barnett but his fight will be over in 2 minutes and I have no interest in watching Matt Lindland at all and once again he’s on the main card and probably being grossly overpaid for a guy with zero drawing power. Not to mention the new announce team they have is awful.I can’t imagine them doing another PPV show after this especially if this event does less buys than the first one.Which I think it will.

Think they probably will mate, proper nail in the coffin time for affliction.

Very unfortunate. Affliction can’t catch a break.

What does Golden Boy have to gain by this? They’re not trying to compete with Affliction so why would they intentially screw them over? This makes no sence to me.

i kinda think they are only in alliance for their Ring magazine covers t-shirt deal. Ring is owned by gbp. i’m not sure that they were ever in a real partnership, just one big ad for those boxing throwback shirts(wich actually look pretty cool btw).

Thats exactly what it was b.w. Affliction only acted like they had a partnership to take eyes off of not getting any ticket sales!

Not going to miss the Fedor/AA fight but Mosley/Margarito is going to be great. Margarito is never a let down.
Going to be a good night to have DVR

Sucks for Affliction, wonder how this going to effect attendance (if at all).
Mosley is the hometown fighter and Margarito is going to pack the place with Mexican fight fans.

I live in LA, and honestly I don’t really see the crossover audience. It’s a select few, but for the most part, MMA fans are MMA fans, and boxing fans are older traditional sports fans. They like football, basketball, and when there’s a big boxing fight on they’ll watch it with their sports buddies.
I don’t think your average 25 year old dude in an Affliction t-shirt is going to up and cruise over to watch Mosley/Margarito (yet another boxing match that’s promoted on race vs. race)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!
Wow… Affliction as an MMA business is making PrideFC and Dream look like the UFC. And that’s not easy to do!
Honestly, why are they even relevant? They are a joke, plain and simple.
