Oscar De La Hoya vs Manny Pacquiao open thread and discussion

Hey, it's not mixed martial arts but it was a great fight. And we know there are a ton of readers here interested in Saturday's highly publicized showdown.
So here's a thread for those interested to discuss all the action and provide their thoughts and reactions to Manny Pacquiao's thrilling TKO victory over Oscar De La Hoya last night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
In case you were too wrapped up in college football or one of the many brilliant articles here on MMAmania, the Filipino phenom battered De La Hoya to a TKO victory when the not-so-golden boy couldn't answer the bell for the ninth round.
Pacquiano (48-3-2) looked masterful despite being out of his weight class and De La Hoya (39-6) looked like a man who may finally be past his prime.
From De La Hoya to former trainer Freddie Roach after the fight:
"Freddie, you're right. I just don't have it anymore."
Hopefully you enjoyed the action ... who knows these days when the next big boxing match will roll around.

Oscar De La Hoya is a bit of a joke these days as a fighter. But god damn, what a promoter. I want 30 mil for 45 minutes work.

great night of boxing …. i started off by watching froch v pascal free of charge going at it for 12 rounds …. what a fight….. that fight was over in england
then i watched this it was a very good night of boxing
hatton v manny????
war hatton
froch v calzaghe????
by ufcaddict on Dec 7, 2008 8:26 AM EST up reply actions
hatton vs. manny would be sick. Can you imagine the crowd?? ppl love pac man but Hattons fans with the band and suff might be my favorite thing in all of sports right now. It’s like a college basketball game with the chants and stuff. I think that may be a fight i would actually pay for.
by Crowls on Dec 7, 2008 9:46 AM EST up reply actions
I missed the fight! Obviously Pac Man destroyed Oscar since Oscar basically quit….but just how dominant did Pac man look? Did he dominate Oscar on the same level that B-hop dominated Pavlik?
by john on Dec 7, 2008 11:09 AM EST up reply actions
much more dominating than B-Hop schooled pavlik. Pacman is in another level right now.
Pacman vs Hatton will do. But, Pacman vs Floyd is gonna be SICK. I’ll pay 100bucks to see that fight.
by titoortizfan on Dec 7, 2008 11:30 AM EST up reply actions
I want Pacman vs. Floyd as well. Or the winner of Pacman Fatton fights Floyd. So probably Pacman Floyd.

Yeah, right! pacman is on another plane right now. He’s head and shoulders above everyone else. give him Mayweather. Hatton is gonna go down!

by james on Dec 7, 2008 6:47 PM EST up reply actions
True true.
Think about Oscar then think about Rampage/Silva/Forrest/GSP/BJ/Fedor
we would all rather watch these guys go at it, yet De La Hoya has figured out a way to earn not 10 times what they earn per fight, he earns 100 times what they get paid!
Or so.
Lets say those guys get about $300,000 for a fight, De La can easily get $30,000,000.
Multiply that 100 by the 3-4 fights a guy can do in MMA per year, and you get about 30 years of fighting in MMA (as a headliner) to equal one big De La Hoya payout.
WOW.
by Ben on Dec 6, 2008 7:48 PM EST up reply actions
yeah but 1. he’s the promoter and 2. they will get over 2 million ppv’s, and he doesn’t get just 1 or 2 cents on the dollar like mma "stars, and lastly, boxing (unfortunately it’s a fact) has been around for ever and is way bigger than mma…for now!
by kevin on Dec 6, 2008 8:15 PM EST up reply actions
oscar pays himself, thats how smart he is. once he retires there wont be as big a difference betwen top mma fighters and top boxers. i actually think top mma fighters will make more than top boxers in the next 5 years.
by b.w. on Dec 6, 2008 9:38 PM EST up reply actions
Thats right b.w. Remember when Joe Rogan said “the stars that are in boxing now are going to be the only ones” “there will be no new stars” something like that? It was so true! After Oscar is gone there will be no other!
by JV on Dec 6, 2008 10:53 PM EST up reply actions
I can’t believe he quit like that. Jon Fitch could have quit in the third round of the GSP fight if the rules were (End the fight when you think you’re gonna lose). Oscar never had any heart and he still doesn’t.
It’s pretty sad when heartless money grubbers like him and Mayweather are the face of the sport.
by Dom on Dec 7, 2008 3:26 AM EST up reply actions
Um JV…I think you may have forgot about the fan favourite that Oscar was fighting last night. Oscar’s out…Manny’s in.
Boxing is here forever you haters…..live with it. Like Joe Rogan is some sort of defining authority on when, where and how boxing is going to die lol. He’s just Dana’s parrot, and gets paid to trash boxing like Dana does.
Boxing will be here forever.
by introvert on Dec 7, 2008 11:01 AM EST up reply actions
introvert, Manny as the fan favorite? Ok, if thats what you believe.
1: where in my comment does it say boxing is gone?
2: where in my comment am I saying Rogan is a "defining authority?
3: what the f*ck does Dana have to do with anything?
There are no new stars in boxing! Theres no up and comer that everybody is talking about! Manny is definintely the P4P best in boxing right now! But will never sell or carry boxing the way Oscar did! Dude all you do is talk sh*t! Go get laid or drink some beers! Do something to make your hate filled life alittle happier!!!
by JV on Dec 7, 2008 1:02 PM EST up reply actions
Dana is a fan of boxing, but boxing is dying. It’s a reality. Manny’s a beast, but where are the other draws? Oscar was THEE biggest draw and he was the one that made stars out of other guys. Mayweather wasn’t as big as he is until the Oscar fight. Oscar’s done, Mayweather’s retired. Who other than Manny is going to carry the sport?
Obviously boxing will be here forever, but it’s not even close to what it once was. If you deny that, you are delusional.

Manny was the “fan” favourite, or did you not here the 75% Filipino crowd cheering him on and chanting his name?
Save it, JV…you are one of the leaders of the “Dana and Rogan nutthugging club”….it’s pretty sad.
…and, I just got laid…and I don’t drink…and btw, it’s “beer” not “beers”…like moose or geese…not mooses and geeses.

No, I did not “here” the 75% Filipino crowd. God, you’re such a failure…
It’s not even fun to “debate” you, because you bring nothing new to the table. Durrrrh, you’re all Dana nuthuggers, durrrrrh. Get back to me when you have an educated argument.

by JV on Dec 7, 2008 6:31 PM EST up reply actions
LMAO…“R-Dizzle”. Since you’re “debating” the 75%, then I guess you watched the fight? Funny how people here “hate boxing”, but yet seem to feel they are so educated about it…
Keep your rumours, speculation, and guesses…one boxing match just kicked the shit out of anything the UFC has ever done…in one night.
by introvert on Dec 7, 2008 11:09 PM EST up reply actions
No, I watched the fight. Notice the quotations around the word here? Yea, that’s because you used the word in the wrong context. I didn’t “HERE” anything. Get it? Or are you still too dense??
One night boxing match with De La Hoya. Name another event that didn’t include Oscar or Mayweather that outdrew the UFC. There is NO OTHER BOXER THAT CAN CONSISTENTLY OUTDRAW THE UFC UNLESS THEIR NAMES ARE FLOYD MAYWEATHER (RETIRED) OR OSCAR DE LA HOYA (SOON TO BE RETIRED)
The Calzaghe/Jones fight did 190,000 buys. That was HBO’s last big event. They even had the 24/7 series for that fight. What do you have to say to that?? They were expecting 300,000 buys and couldn’t even come close to that number!!
Actually provide an intelligent response, please.

to me de la hoya is a great fighter and paquiao too. but the thing that bothers me and i think hurts de la hoya is" ahh im just too old ohh i just dont have it anymore ohh i have to be smart etc etc…." to me that’s backing down on a fight that is losing the fight on the beginning.i base this on numeroues examples, and on his intervies look at fedor mma fights dude the guy doesnt flinch or is scared of his oponent he doesnt even talks trash bout anybody look at hopkins fights the guy talks trash but he backs it up.de la hoya can kick ass but if he has that same mentality dude he better go runnin home to his momma or be a man and step up on a fight. last night was a great fight but the outcome i think some people may have foreseeing it.
by Chui on Dec 7, 2008 12:05 PM EST up reply actions
Manny completely destroyed de la hoya, but you have to give credit to the man, not only was he a brilliant boxer in his day, what he has done for boxing and his charity work is amazing, at least he didnt duck out when a good fighter came looking for him. Mayweather should take on cotto/margarito/pacquiao then retire. Stop bitching about de la hoya. What a legend he was. In his day against pacquiao would have been brilliant, it would have gone all the way.

MMA fighters not even in 10 years will earn that much money merely for the fact that Dana White (the guy who we all love and respect) doesnt seem to give a S**T about the fighters. he cares about his brand and not its employess. He’s been gettin rid of fighters like they’re nothing. He almost got rid of Fitch and Koscheck, why? because they stepped up and said something or went against the UFC. when these guys retire they’re not gonna have any insurance plans or benefits…the UFC is gonna make money, but the fighters dont see any of it. The main event guys make close to a mil but look at the other fighters some of them sometime make 12,000 a fight. I hope they will get a lot of money in range of de la hoya but i dont think they will as long as dana cares more about the UFC than he does about its fighters.

JV. i thought this fight could possibly be a mismatch, i just never thought it would be one in manny’s favor. major props to manny and i’ll never doubt him again. oscar looked like a shell of his former self and looked like he got old overnight. i did predict the way for manny to win was to get in,do as much damage as possible quickly, and get out quick. he did just that. in and out quickly all night long. i never thought the fight would go down like this though. i thought oscar would be too big and too strong. i would be shocked if oscar didnt retire. he’s finished. bad news for boxing, after him, there will be no more million ppv’s for boxing for a very long time. i hope maywether comes out of retirement and fights manny. im already picking pacquiao to win. like i said, i’ll never doubt him again. :)

I kept telling my brothers that if Manny could take Oscars punch he would win. But DAM! there wasnt no punches for him to take! I never thought it would be this way!!!!!! (Retire) is the perfect word for Oscar. And Mayweather will never come out of retirement to fight the likes of Manny! Mayweather either ducked fighters (Margarito, Cotto, Mosley) or waited till they didnt show much in their fights (Judah, Baldomir, Hatton)

pacquiao and hatton might make for a good fight.other than that boxing died just a little more tonight. your right, oscar never landed 1 single significant punch. i also though oscar would come in at 160 and have a big size advantge,(even emmanuel steward said the same) but nothing was normal about this fight. icant wait for the tuf finale, ufn and ufc 92 and fields dynamite all in the next few weeks. i still like boxing, but WAR MMA!

Yea, it was weird! How the hell does a fighter rehydrate only 2 pounds? But like you say, TUF finale and UFC 92 should make my Dec. better!!!

I am starting to think betting on De La Hoya was a bit of a poor choice.

I LOVE MMA … But better ?
I havent seen the De La Hoya fight yet ( Link would be appreciated , but I watched the Carl Frotch fight…Awesome, as good as any MMA fight Ive seen this year
I love both MMA & Boxing equally ! Both fking awesome
by Big PG on Dec 7, 2008 6:30 AM EST up reply actions
i think mma is better in the fact that you get to see top fighters fight each other on a more consistent basis, as to where boxing you could wait years to see top fighters compete due to it’s corruptness.

I haven’t watched boxing in forever. Tonight was a good fight, but I have to say that I realy don’t have the patience anymore. Thank God for dvr and fast forwarding. The production was awful, all that air time to talk about nothing.

Hatton will destroy him! I picked Pacman as he was younger faster more hungry but most people laughed at my pick!

That sucked, thank god I didn’t pay for it, Not that I would buy a boxing ppv anyway. One time I’d like to see a boxer shoot into a double-leg takedown and then ground and pound until the wimpy old boxing refs managed to pull them off…..That would be cool….

So, what, Roger Huerta has to wear the chicken suit on a busy street with a sign saying he loves Brandon Vera??
Or is it the other way around???

Boxing is DEAD…. I have never bloged before, but tonight I must be heard. Tonight I went to a local bar to have some drinks with an atractive co-worker of mine. When I arived at the bar I realized that the Boxing match was tonight. What I saw was appalling. On nights that the UFC is airing this bar is so packed that I don’t want to be there. Tonight was no more busy than any other Saturday… The first two fights were down right criminal… the “fighters” (term used very losely) were knocked out with punches that did not land, they were blocked… The guyes Pussed out… Then in the main event the “face” of boxing was B*tch slapped by a man 3 weight classes smaller than him… Dominated!!! The only positive for boxing tonight is that for the first time since Hollyfild retired(the first time) I saw an impressive performance from a boxer… I know he is small and Mexican… not someone that many people get too excited about… but he is the first “real deal” the sport has seen in years… I have to say, if boxing has a future it must promote this man “Pacquiao” he is a true athlete, like the champions in the sport of MMA. This is the moment that boxing fans chose… support a soap opera star named De La Hoya, or get behind a real man and make Pacquiao the new standerd in their sport. I really hope they chose correctly, because I don’t need boxing to fail to enjoy my MMA.
by carsole on Dec 7, 2008 3:48 AM EST reply actions
Pacquiao is Filipino, not Mexican.
I agree with all your comments, it’s so rare these days you see something worthwhile in boxing, whereas MMA is almost always full of highlights.

Um…Oscar made 30 million…..boxing ain’t dead…your favourite bar is dead, and will be out of business before boxing is.

by scott on Dec 7, 2008 10:05 AM EST reply actions
Wow. What a one sided affair. Oscar should’ve never taken that fight. Manny is P4P the best boxer right now. PACMAN!
by Kimura88 on Dec 7, 2008 10:13 AM EST reply actions
Pacman is now a known fighter all over the world (thanks to Oscar)…just watch how fast Mayweather talks about coming out of retirement now that there is a guy that can make him millions more.
On a side note…Oscar is a legend of the sport and a champion time and time again. He deserves nothing but respect from anyone who watches ANY type of combative sport. You fools that come on here and talk down guys like him are completely of base. Grow up.
by introvert on Dec 7, 2008 10:57 AM EST reply actions
for once, i agree with you. oscar has done alot for the sport of boxing and has kinda carried the sport for the last 5-6 years. he fought every top challenger in his prime. he is no longer in his prime, thats why manny won. manny is 29, oscar is 35, big difference in boxing. if manny had fought a 29 year old oscar last night, the results would have been much different imo. oscar will be a billionaire soon, with all the money he’s earned and all the money he will make in the future with gbp and will be a 1rst ballot hall of famer. i’m not taking anything away from manny, he’s awesome, but it will be a long time before another fighter that comes along and captures the publics attention like oscar has.

mmamania.com? what does this have to do with mma?
by battery on Dec 7, 2008 11:58 AM EST reply actions
boxing, shut the door and lock it!
It stime to retire boxing!!
by TYSON on Dec 7, 2008 12:18 PM EST reply actions
Why retire boxing…Boxing is apart of MMA as JJ is or as Judo is or Thai KB, etc…Don’t disrepect any element that makes up MMA. Without any of these elements there would be no MMA. I myself do Judo and Boxing…and many MMA fighters attend different schools to get clear knowledge of each, to be a better fighter… So until you know how to learn how to throw a punch, have great foot work, manage distance, have good head movement, and learn to take a punch, have a little respect for boxing……i cant stand people who think they know what they are talking about..You sit there in the comfort of you couch and judge like boxing is an easy sport…

This was a fixed fight, that’s why boxing is going down. Boxing is more about money than really fighting, boxing should change the rules the winner of the fight should get the bigger pay day now matter who the names are this will ensure both fighter to really fight and not pretend
Oscar didn’t even try to fight, lesser fighters then Oscar did better against manny pacman is the best but I don’t think he is that good to shut out Oscar every round. I say it was fixed I wouldn’t be surprised if manny singed with golden boy.

Fixed fight you say!!! hahaha….
Because it did not happen as most of you predicted you’re now saying it’s a fixed fight.. hhahaha….
you say: lesser fighters then Oscar did better against manny…
Why did you say this… Have you seen Barrera, Morales, Marques or Diaz fought with oscar? your just assuming man.. like most of you assumed that Pacman have no chance.. base you analysis and words on facts man.. not on assumption.
by aldpin on Dec 8, 2008 7:42 AM EST up reply actions
Before the fight, many are saying “Pacman will be beaten badly and that he is out of his league”..
Now, after the fight some are saying it’s a fixed fight because Oscar did not win and beat Manny Pacquiao like they predicted or wanted to..
And because Pacman gave his best, now its a fixed fight.
At david:
You said “lesser fighters than Oscar did better against manny” “but I don’t think he is that good to shut out Oscar”… How did you knew that previous figther who fought Manny is a lesser figther than Oscar? Did you saw them fight with Oscar? Of course no.. You’re just assuming again.. like most of you assumed that Oscar will badly beat pacman.. Base your words and analysis on facts man not on assumption..
