UFC Quick Quote: Lyoto Machida on being branded boring

"Everyone has their own opinion and I really respect that. I am a martial artist, there is a lot of thought and strategy that goes into the way I fight. Give me time and in the future every one will understand my style. It is like jiu-jitsu in the beginning (UFC 1, 2, 3...), it was boring but now it is necessary. If you don’t like it, sorry. I always try to win. For some that is boring, I know, but I am beating the best in the world. After my fights I do not have nothing on my face, no scratches, no bruises. I am like a ghost they can not find me. If that is boring, that is their opinion. But I will be there for long time WINNING. Let everyone underestimate me. I will always be training ready for the next."

-- Undefeated light heavyweight contender Lyoto Machida addresses his critics who feel his style is boring in a recent interview with BloodyElbow.com. He has five straight wins inside the Octagon -- four of which have gone to decision. He takes on Thiago Silva at UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2" at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on January 31. The winner of that bout will likely earn early title challenger consideration in 2009 along with either Quinton "Rampage" Jackson or Wanderlei Silva. What say you ... is the "Dragon" boring or just too good that most casual fans can't appreciate his elusive style?

He is not boring, that’s just the karate style, very elusive. 2nd round TKO win vs. Silva…

I like how he forces his opponents to make mistakes.

“like a ghost”
I agree, he has no bruises or scratches, and he wins!
That said, I’m not a big fan, he’s kinda like DELa Hoya, once he’s got the decision one, he fights not to lose, not to win!

While I love watching him fight (or rather, watching his opponents miss consistently), I do NOT like that other fighters seem to be adopting this style. Granted I don’t expect them to stand there and take punches on purpose, but no one else can capture that elusive style/grace he has while doing it. They look more like they are scared of the punch, and running away rather than being elusive. In that style of fighting….if Lyoto has a doctorate…..all imitators look like high school biology students.

by chefdaddy on Dec 5, 2008 11:04 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Cool analogy there chef. Kalib Starnes is a nursery student. He’s f—kin’ runnin’ away literally…As for the other fighters who love to stick and move, there’s a proper way of doin’ it. Though I understand that they really don’t wanna get punched.

I have a huge appreciation for his skills and style. If people could effectively fight the way he does they a lot more would. Go back and watch him fight Sokoudjou again. The guy is a technician par excellence.

Sorry, BORING! I dont see how any of you can say his fights are entertaining. Isn’t that the nature of this sport anyway? To be exciting? GO SOME WHERE ELSE GHOSTMAN.

he may be winning but he won’t be around for a long time if he stays boring. winning or not the UFC will cut you if you’re boring. And he is.

HE actually makes an awesome point ive never heard anybody make so far. Just like BJJ in the begining, boring cuz nobody understood and new the stratagy or techniques. Once people become educated on his style and stratagy, I think he will get a bit more lovin then he does now anyway.

WOW, what an asshole, not only boring but self important and conceited. Way to insult the fans intelligence.

by paniczoo on Dec 5, 2008 8:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

How did you get that? And what is he supposed to say when tons of people he could beat literally to death criticize his style?

by chefdaddy on Dec 6, 2008 1:38 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly what I was thinking Chef. Panic: Find any claim in Lyoto’s statements that isn’t true. It’s not conceit to defend your fighting style. I think most mixed martial arts fans are not of the mind that Machida is boring. I think most Tough Man Championship fans probably think his fights are tougher to sit through than mother’s day in an orphanage, and it sounds like that’s who he’s directing his comments towards.

I think it’s worth pointing out that I wasn’t offended by his comments and you were. There’s probably a reason for that…

by SkeletonKey on Dec 6, 2008 2:35 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Hahahahaha….Harder to sit thru than Mother’s Day in an orphanage? a bit twisted SK.

It amazes me watching him fight. I find it beautiful how he can fight for 15 minutes in the world renowned Octagon, and NOt get TOUCHED, all while tagging his opponents up and picking them apart!

One of my favorite fighters to watch!

by john on Dec 6, 2008 11:28 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That’s what sucks the most about him. He is so good at being boring that no one can impose their will on them to make it interesting. I’d like to see a really good wrestler get a hold of him and beat him to a pulp on the ground. Unfortunately he beat what was probably the best 205 wrestler in Tito already.

Machida’s elusiveness could be the death of the sport if it catches on (hello Rashad).

I sincerely hope that he gains some more confidence in his ability to take a punch and ends up trying to actually finish fights.

by DDT on Dec 5, 2008 10:58 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Death of the sport??? gimme a break DDT. That would just create “purists” like boxing has. Being elusive is one thing, but it only works if u have takedown defense. Eventually guys get close to you and if u can’t keep it standing and then get away it doesn’t matter how good your footwork is. Plus only so many guys have the skills to be elusive like that. It’s the evolution of the sport man, just go with it.

And Hammill would outwrestle Tito every day of the week

by Crowls on Dec 5, 2008 11:08 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed.

The sport is littered with legends who were passed by with time. Fighters didn’t train or strategize for fighter’s like Machida before.

Now that he’s near the top they will and it will be countered. Sort of like Houston Alexander, I am sure I heard him referred to as an unstoppable force, like Chuck, now everyone seems to have his number, like Chuck.

Someone will get his number eventually.

If Rashad & Machida are evolution of the sport – then f*ck UFC – I’ll watch Affliction or something

by Anger Jack on Dec 5, 2008 11:28 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Don’t worry dude. Thiago Silva is gonna impose his style on him. Unless Machida sprints or imposes his suspect chin. But Thiago as shown his resiliency before, when he got rocked by Mendes’ kicks.

by Syd[a.k.a. "The Negation"] on Dec 5, 2008 11:29 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Anger…the UFC will be very disappointed to hear you won’t watch anymore. Equally Affliction is probably pumped right now. At least for the next year or so while they are still in business.

by Crowls on Dec 5, 2008 11:31 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I hope Thiago beats Machida to a pulp. I’d even be happy with a one timer. I’d even be happy if Machida won if he did it while engaging more than once per minute.

Rashad KO’s Chuck after ducking and shucking for a round and a half. Not a very entertaining fight. Effective? Yes. Entertaining? Not so much, unless your a Chuck hater.

I give Rashad props for evolving his fight game but he’s still a boring fighter.

I don’t mind that Machida can be a little boring, as long as he doesn’t mind that it will be the reason he watches other fighters get a shot at the title while he trains for his next 3 rounder.

by naturalshadow on Dec 5, 2008 3:05 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not a Rashad fan, but I think he’s clearly becoming way more dynamic as a fighter. He definitely was a LnP wrestler when he started, but 3 of his last 5 wins are by KO. And the first round against Chuck was pretty boring, but when he’s fighting a more talented striker he can’t just rush in and try and knock him out or take him down. I was impressed he was able to get a feel for his timing and catch him in the second round.

by GregC on Dec 5, 2008 3:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Boy you have to love a good Machiada thread.

by DDT on Dec 5, 2008 6:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Rashad is one of the most versatile wrestlers in the UFC, i said this just before the Chuck fight and predicted he would beat him. If you think that he is just a lay and pray specialist, you need to look back at either the Imes, Bonner, Lambert, Salmon and I also did not see a whole lot of lay and pray in the Tito fight, but admittedly a pointless amount of jumping and bouncing around. People need to stop hating, when Rashad actially comes to fight, he is a serious threat to anyone. Chuck fans need to get over it.

by Ade on Dec 6, 2008 5:34 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think anyone questions that he is elusive. The point is that several moments in his fights have indicated he can use his elusiveness to punish his opponent. He simply chooses not to do that most of the time.

Half of being in a combat sport is winning and half is being entertaining. If he can’t utilize his amazing karate skills to set up finishes more often, then he’s never going to be a major draw and he’ll get paid accordingly.

by ricker2005 on Dec 5, 2008 10:09 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

well put ricker. thats why tito was such a draw for so long. even when he was losing, he was losing in devastating manner, not back peddling! If a winning record and few fans is machida’s goal, great, but me personally, I’d want the cash!!

by kevin on Dec 5, 2008 10:47 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Definitely the key point he needs to consider. It is a sport, but his value to the market is based on how entertaining he is to watch. A little more aggression could equal significant coin.

by BobC on Dec 5, 2008 11:14 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree completely. If Machida could use his supposed amazing technique in even somewhat exciting fashion he could be one of the biggest names in MMA. He won’t so he won’t but maybe he could.

Record 13-0-0
8 Decisions

by JimmieGreens on Dec 5, 2008 11:55 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Good point on the aggression BobC. In a close decision call, Machida could lose based on his lack of aggression.
UFC scoring criteria is based on effective striking and grappling, overall octagon control and effective aggressiveness/defense. I’ll give him points across the board except perhaps for aggression. He seems to be taking the counterstrike position a little too often for my liking.
Actually, ever since Rampage coaxed Chuck to throw that last punch, MANY fighters have adopted the counterstrike position and are waiting for that mistake to hapen vs. pushing the pace themselves.

by Dugout on Dec 5, 2008 12:00 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Great point. I love how he fights, but he does fight not to lose when he has the decision wrapped up (don’t love that aspect). This in turn makes him less entertaining. Hopefully, he can transition into using his skills to finish fights.

by Jeff on Dec 5, 2008 11:35 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

May I suggest that Lyoto Machida’s style is considered boring because his opponents do not respond to the hole they are put in with his surgical dissection of them and ability to read and move away from the attack without taking himself out of his range.

The UFC has judges and a point system. A great strategist and fighter like Machida uses that reality to put his opponents in a deep hole on points where they MUST know they will lose if the fight goes to decision. This is the intention. Once aware that they are losing and must come up big to win they SHOULD be highly motivated to open it up and try anything possible.

Those who do (and make mistakes), so far, have been introduced to the incredible skill of the man and destroyed. Those who don’t take the risks or try half-heartedly lose by majority decision. Those who do and have good defense go after him leaving few opportunities to capitalize for Machida and those fights are potentially split decisions or even potential draws.

Lyoto Machida is not a boring fighter without a lot of help from his opponents. Either they lack the skill to solve him or the guts to lay it all on the line. If more of his opponents had the balls to pull out all stops, in the face of certain defeat on points, Machida would be an exciting finishing fighter capitalizing on the mistakes desperate fighters can make.

IMO Machida is a great tactician with exceptional skills who shines a bright light on the weaknesses of the systems, styles and heart of his opponents.

Just my 2 cents.

by JimmieGreens on Dec 5, 2008 10:00 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

how did “Elusive” become such a buzzword anyway??? Guys complain about ppl like leben or Houston Alexander b/c they are one dimensional brawlers. Then they complain when a guy uses his superior technique to win fights and they complain about that too. I don’t get it. I’d like to see Machida let his strikes go a little more and try to finish when it’s clear he’s capable of it, but I have no problem with him not standing in there and just slugging.

DDT,

To play Devil’s advocate, why engage when you have already won the decision? His first priority is to win fights and he does that, his second priority is to entertain. If he is entertaining is debatable, but he seems to think he entertains.

by Jeff on Dec 5, 2008 11:40 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I look at it like a Lay-npray wrestler. The have a techniques that their opponent cannot get past. When Machida kepps backing up looking for that occasional kick or punch he is like a wrestler holiding his opponent down and trowing an elbow every 30 seconds or so. Yeah he can win the fight doing it, but its not much fun to watch.

Tell me what is the big difference between Machida and Jake Obrien.

by DDT on Dec 5, 2008 11:47 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You said something key for me in there “…but its not much fun to watch.”

I said this a couple of months back, that Lyoto’s style, for the fans, is a matter of personal preference. I understand that for some his style is boring, but for others, .yself included, it is fun to watch a fighter like Lyoto.

For me the “lay-n-pray” style of some wrestlers is boring. However, I can imagine that for fans of wrestling it is not boring.

Oh, and the biggest difference between Machida and O’Brien is the Machida still carries a perfect record in teh UFC and against some name opposition.

by Jeff on Dec 5, 2008 11:59 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Every one saying Machida doesn’t attack. I saw him attack lots with Tito. Could anyone really argue that maybe Tito was playing it safe. He knew every time he closed the distance with Machida, he was going eat kicks, punches or knees.

by Grembone on Dec 5, 2008 4:03 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Thank you Jeff for painting it more clearly and I add Machida is different from O’Brien because he also beating real opponents decisively. It is a matter of perspective and opinion. I am a huge BJJ fan. Many people say the ground game is boring. I love it. Especially when there is real technique involved. That does not mean that I like to watch a wrestler dominate by holding their opponent down for 3 rounds, but a wrestler that is continually attacking whether successful or not, that is interesting. Same with standup, BJJ, etc. IMO a strategized fight is definitely as much fun as watching an all out scrap. The diversity is what makes this sport so great.

Do some people think the objective in a fight..is to balls out bang.. and get banged.. to show how tuf of a fighter you are?

Not me.. Martial Arts is a Science..

Lyoto is a state of the art martial artist.

The problem in a fight.. is someone is trying to hurt you.. Tko you.. or Choke you out.. For you to be the solution to this problem.. is it exchange power for power..?? If fighter A.. is considered a rock and fighter B IMO should be water.

If I fight a guy that is 6’6 275lbs.. 2 1/2 table spoons of fat.. Do I want to stand there.. and go blow for blow with the dude.. Nah..

I’ll find a way to put myslef in a position where I can do max damage to him.. while minimizing damage to me.

Lyoto is a Master martial artist.. if some hav enot noticed yet.. Look at his fight if Tito.. in between each round Tito can be hear.. " He’s just running ".. and in between each round.. Tito’s face gets worse and worse..

hummm… how can this be?

How can a fighter run away.. but do some much damage to his opponents face..

It’s similar to stick and move.. from Boxing.. the " Sweet Science ".. Lyoto.. doesn’t need to show how macho he is.. he needs to show how smart and tactical he is..

I found great pleasure in see such a Master at work.. his body of work.. is a thing of martial arts legends.

Any fighter who can’t finish fights is not worth PPV $ in my book.

I actually liked Tito better in that fight – he was actually closer to finishing the fight than Machida in his last 4 fights.

He should fight Bader next – so when he wins – we can call Lyoto Master-Bader

“his body of work.. is a thing of martial arts legends”

Legend huh?

Legend of the Running Master.

The elusive legend of the never finisher.

Machida will retire a legend for having clocked the most minutes in the ring of any fighter ever. I can’t wait until he’s the champ. Maybe 5 rounds will be enough time for him to finish someone. I doubt it but maybe.

I really do get how talented and skilled he is, I really do. And the three kicks per round that he lands are beautiful. I just wish he would engage more; even just a little more.

he finished rich franklin pretty effectively. he finished sokoudjou pretty effectively. have u only seen his fights in the ufc???

by Crowls on Dec 5, 2008 11:23 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’ve only seen him fight Franklin and BJ outside the UFC and from what I recall he did catch Franklin nicely and I would really love to see him do that more. I think Machida has the ability to finish any LHW out there. I just think he won’t take the risks necessary to do so. Maybe he was more aggressive early in his career but he is not now. The fight with BJ if I remember was terrible but I will not go back and watch it again because once is usually enough with any Machida fight.

The fight with Soko was terrible right until the end.

Look, I really don’t even care if Machida finishes figths as long as he tries to finish them that’s all.

I hope so I really do. I think he could be a tremendously entertaining fighter if he was more aggressive. He doesn’t have to be crazy aggressive, just more aggressive.

I totally agree Phil, that is what is exciting to me. Machida, fighting a guy like Tito that is so used to dominating his opponents and can’t dominate and getting his trash kicked at the same time. Machida even took him down at the end of the first round. That is usually Tito’s statement against an opponent.

I love a good war, but mental strategy is facinating as well.

Thank you..my fellow maniacs!!!

This is the best MMA site.. not just because of the site’s format.. but because of all of us.. whom drop an opinion.. or debate an issue or what not.. I love mmamania…

We all will not always see eye to eye the same thing.. and the gravy is in the debating.. the threads.. the comments.. from all..

I learn alot from you guys.. alot.

and on the topic of running in the cage.. just watch Kalib Starnes vs Nate Quarry.. Kalib should run in the New York City Marathon.. that boy could run.. and run..and run.. let him do bare foot too.. he doesn’t nned no running shoes..

You stated his style is similar to boxing – well he should crossover to boxing where almost each fight is won on points!! this way he may get respect and wont have to address every fan of mma who obviously agree he is boring!!. Maybe marathon running is another avenue for him, its what he does best!

Most underrated fighter in MMA. He has wins against Big name opponents and is the best LHW in the world! I don’t give a crap what anybody else thinks, he is and will prove it. He will get by Thiago and then win the title. Time will tell

by horny for mma on Dec 5, 2008 10:23 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

He is the best decisioner in MMA.

If the judges scored the fights based on what they say the fights are scored on he would lose every fight.

Fights are scored on Effective Striking, Aggression and Ring Control. He loses two out of three of those every single fight. Thus by those criteria he is a terrible fighter.

by DDT on Dec 5, 2008 11:14 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, so the opponent gets octagon control? ..So Figher A, keeps on going forward, but gets owned by machida standing up. He wins because he’s aggressive? Cause moving forward and constantly getting tagged isnt really octagon control.. Ya, mindless aggression maybe.

but if that’s just the formula to win and youre the judge, houston alexander would win every decision fight he gets. Since he pushes forward. Even if his opponent never gets hit and keeps contering him all day..

i guess that’s why DDT isnt a judge.

If you really appreciate and understand the various martial arts, you have to love Machida. He was a Sumo champion as a youth, a Karate master, a top level BJJ fighter and an overall complete fighter. Nothing is better than watching Machida ruin his opponents and watching Tito Ortiz piss an moan in the Octagon because someone who is 10X the fighter that he is picks him apart for 3 rounds.

Because he is one slippery fool. He has a great ability to keel from getting tied up. He shrugged Tito off with what looked to be ease. He not only is good at avoiding contact but maybe just as good if not better at avoiding being out grappled. The man is a phenomenal talent…just really boring. I think he could easily be one of the most exciting fighters out ther if he was more aggressive.

Comments like this are retarded, “If you really appreciate and understand the various martial arts, you have to love Machida”

I’ve been either practicing or watching martial arts & MMA since I was 6 years old and I think Machida is a boring fighter… he’s a brazilian LHW version of Tim Sylvia.

I’ve said it many times before, if everyone in the UFC fought like Machida, the UFC would die.

Imagine if Wandy had to fight himself. That would be CRAZY exciting! Or a fight between two GSPs. Awesome! Now imagine a fight between two Machidas. I don’t think there would be one punch thrown there.

by RHV on Dec 5, 2008 11:43 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Is there a LHW that is close to Machida’s style? I would actually be interested in seeing Machida vs. Machida just to see what would happen. Kind of like when you throw two boring wrestlers against each other sometimes it turns into a good fight.

Maybe Machida vs. Evans would be like that. That could actually happen pretty easily if they win their next fight. That could be the least anticipated title fight in MMA history.

Great fighter. Putting two fighters in a cage with different fighting styles is what it’s about. His fights may seem slow at times but not because of Lyoto, he never stops fighting. His opponents are the one’s that seem lost.

as much as the ufc says they want guys to put on a good show, and make it aggressive and all, the one thing that matters more is winning…and lyoto wins…look at sokoudjou – hes aggressive, but he was 1-2 in the octagon…young talent, aggressive, lots of promise – bam he gets cut….. its about winning

by mctapout on Dec 5, 2008 10:30 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

You can’t blame the guy for wanting to win at all costs, but the problem is is he ended up being champ one day, they would have to always find a hugely popular guy (not always the #1 contender) to fight him. Or else they risk having to have their champ always fighting somewhere other than the main event. Personally, I wouldn’t fork out $50 or $60 to what the “ghost”.

I hope Silva catches him on the chin, so the UFC doesn’t end up with the “ghost” as their champ one day.

I think Silva would be an exciting champ though….the guy’s a beast.

i like his fighting style, he does what he needs to do to win and avoid taking punishment it is what any smart fighter should do. I like to see a brawl sometimes but i also like to see technical fights and lyoto is the most technical fighter in the business

by matt on Dec 5, 2008 10:43 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Its a preference. Some people look at Lyoto and say boring because he constantly dodges engagements… personally I would rather watch Chris Leben lose than Lyoto win… Chris Leben fights hard and then if hes losing at the end he lets people punch him in the face apparently. Its not a debate… Machida is a good fighter… theres no question about it. He beats his opponents. Its like saying would you rather watch someone consistently hit a double in baseball everytime he steps up to the plate and never strike out or would you rather watch someone strike out every couple times at bat but hit homers every time he doesn’t strike out. Me I wanna see the guy swinging for the fences. Just more entertaining.

BINGO – Great analogy sp00ner!! Why do you think MLB attendance and viewership was so high when Sosa, McGwire & Bonds were cranking home runs for the record? Because people LOVE to see home runs. Likewise, people LOVE to see KO’s and TKO’s and good subs. Who wants to see a decision? Can anyone REALLY say they’re hoping a fight ends in a decision? BTW….Guess who’s got the most Doubles in baseball? Tris Speaker! Who?? Exactly. But ask anyone who has the HR record and they can probably tell you. Why?? Because people like the one hit that scores.

Thiago will push the pace and mark my words this will be Nate Quarry Kaleb Starnes 2 with Machida running the entire fight only difference is Thiago cuts off the angle Leg Kick Over hand right Tko Strikes in round 2. Thiago heads to a showdown with winner jackson/silva! hey lets face it if Machida Loses they can set up Liddell/Machida being machida likes to run from past there prime fighter i.e tito!

I agree that machida is a winner and doesn’t need to get into a slugfest to win BUT I think the ufc management has more forgivness for “exciting” fighters that loose. The ones who are “boring” seem to get cut after 1 loss. When Machida fights for the title he’s going to have to be more aggresive because he’s the one trying to TAKE the belt. Chuck liddel held the belt for quite a while because people had to come and get it. see whats happening to him now that he has to go after people?

First off let me make a case for his title shot, undefeated record of 13-0, Brock Lesnar? 3-1?!?!?! Ok so obviously Dana is wrongfully giving people that are in his own opinion more entertaining the choice fights. This is highly damaging to the title, “sport”, that UFC has been given. This is not an Fn popularity contest, I don’t care if you jump in the ring with a clown suit and tickle the guy into submission. If you step into the ring with a legit MMA fighter and submit him or win by decision that is a win over a MMA fighter. Now I understand to win decisively does carry more credibility, but the man is overly deserving with a 13 and 0 record. Dana is doing things that force me to question this MMA company’s morals and while the MMA sport will live on, I think it is cheapening something that deserves the utmost of care. Lyoto boring or not is climbing in the ring and one way or another beating anyone he faces and thats the bottom line. You don’t like it go back to WWE for entertainment.

if brock has the tools to beat the champ and does it then he deserves everything he gets, he didn’t get given a title, just a opportunity and he took it, obviously 205 is more stacked so machidas gotta work through more guys to get to the top, makes sense

by Shadow side on Dec 5, 2008 11:03 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

everyone gets beat at one point or another in their careers. His loss will come just like everyone eleses. Thing is, its smart to fight how he fights. Why would someone want to go in there and take a beating and try to pull of a submission when they can be ellusive and not take damage, but put a good woooping on their opponent? This guy is an awesome fighter and i dont find him boring. To me personally its awesome to see a guy like tito get pissed off and not be able to do a single thing. I find it very intersting to watch guys swing and miss especially at that level. This is the same way tapia got owned by my boy miguel…Got stuck and stuck and stuck in the face and everytime he tried to land a hit, the corner was cut and ditance was out of range for him. Silva would have a hard time vs machida to because of the way he cuts corners and moves away. Most guys, they are taught to attack, cut corner and close the distance for a body shot or head kick. Machida is the other way around. He closes the distance fast, cuts the corner and shoots to the outside every single time. Only counter to that is to predict where he is going to cut the corner..left or right and shoot in on him in that direction. That or a well times liddell shot to the chin when he is on his way in.

by What? on Dec 5, 2008 11:04 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Other thing that i noticed form his fights is that when he attacks, he is never going head on. He cuts a corner on his way in which is freakin awesome and very very very hard to pull off. Granted he doenst have knockout power from that kind of setup, but he does have the ability to get in your head and once your pissed off in a fight ( unless ur lesner) you tend to make mistakes and in the UFC those are deadly and make highlight reels!!

by What? on Dec 5, 2008 11:07 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

A fight is a fight and I’m all for defence tactics and counter striking (I love counter striking), he’s quite unique with his style, he really is and I mean it… but he’s awfully boring too.
If I was about to do a list of MY top 3 most boring fighters in the Zuffa era UFC he’d be in it.
Though I think he has the potential of being very interresting, but that wont happen.
Machida is boring and we have to live with that.
It would’ve been great to see him fight Thiago Alves, Wanderlei Silva etc.
I also predict Thiago Silva to beat Machida, the sad thing is that once again Machida will make a fight almost unwatchable.
Machida, Jiu-Jitsu wasn’t boring in the beginning, it was exciting and a bit scary at times + that was about 15 years ago.
Wow, I just read on wikipedia that one of Machida’s fighting styles is Sumo… even Sumo itself is more fun and exciting to watch and that I hate!

by JonnyBoy on Dec 5, 2008 11:18 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

My opion is that if you can continue to win at this level of fighting you should be given credit for your game plan weather it is boring or not. If you can go in and lay and pray for three rounds or be illusive and stay unbeaten, the more power to you. When fighter goes into that cage they have three rounds to prove they are the better fighter. If you can’t figure out a game plan on how to beat a guy this illusive or how to get out from under a strong wrestler, you lose and deserve to lose. Boring or not fighters should now what they are up against going into the fight and better damn well figure out how to offset the other fighters strenght.

With that said, as mentioned several times already, winning in this fashion won’t make you many fans and probably won’t put the big bucks in your pocket.

I’m not a casual fan. I appreciate Machida’s technique, precision and effectiveness. He’s a very very good fighter who may challenge for the title in the near future.

NONE of that suggests that his fights aren’t boring to watch. Being good and being entertaining are two entirely different aspects of MMA. Griffin-Bonnar 1 was almost all entertainment and no technique; Lyoto is all technique and no entertainment. Be precise, use good technique, but damn… pick up the pace a little bit – at least try to entertain some. You can win all you want with technique, but the big money requires entertaining the fan base.

by ChrisD on Dec 5, 2008 11:26 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Good comment on the Griffin-Bonnar fight. But you didn’t think Machida’s flying knee on Ortiz in the final round was exciting? The last 90 seconds of that fight was unbelievable.

by Adam on Dec 5, 2008 12:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

…last 90 seconds…

That means the other 810 seconds of that fight were pretty boring. If he would fight like that even just half the fight then he might be one of the most exciting fighters in the world.

by DDT on Dec 5, 2008 6:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think he deserves a title shot if he beats Thiago Silva. However he is boring. Lyoto is one of the few at 205 who knows how to kick. What I mean by that is front kick, side kick etc something other than just leg kicks. Because of that he keeps guys too far away to punch him or be close enough to shoot. He also has a ground game. The UFC has had great wrestlers and jiu jitsu for years but is only now getting quality strikers like Anderson Silva, GSP both champs. Even Griffin is mainly a striker. I think a guy like Badr Hari would destroy UFC guys. Chuck came from K1 and look what he did. When UFC started it was the best ground vs average strikers but now that the money is there things are more even. Lyoto’s style is the future like it or not it works.

I’m finding that my old MMA training partners all love Machida. Not that fighters opinions are more important. In fact, non-fighter casual fan opinions are likely more important. I’m just suprised more people don’t welcome a change of pace. It’s like if everyone in football had high scoring pass games, and each game had 20 touchdown passes. That would only stay exciting for me for so long before I would want to see a team with great pass defense shut them down and win seven or three to zero. Does that make any sense?

That’s B.S. Ken Flo did next to zero damage on Huerta. Machida does damage. Just ask Tito or Soko. Say what you want about Tito but IMO he is a top 10 lhw in the world and Machida kicked his ass. Tito complained that Machida was “running”. Bullsh*t Tito, he was faster and better than you. Two guys standing in front of each other, swinging as hard as they can and waiting for the first one to fall is not mixed martial arts.

Id like to compare Lyoto to two of my favorite fighters of all time.. He has the intelligence of Randy C (in creating a game plan and dismantling his opponent with it), and the grace speed and athleticisim of Anderson S (who can hit this man?). This man mark my words will be the undisputed LHW Champ. Who cares if he doesnt finish people? The only people that care about that are people that dont live, train, or understand mma. Those are the drunken fans that all come to see somebody get knocked the F out. The difference is when Joe Rogan gets mad for standing people up when there is sound technical Jiu-jitsu happening on the ground, the drunks are saying stand them up stand them up! Bash there faces in!!! That IS NOT MMA. To the purist of MMA and to me just watching his movement is a work or art.. To not get hit that much actually takes a tremendous amount of skill and effort.. And he literally does this effortlessley. MMA is a sport, and Lyoto Machida is one of the smartest competitors out there. Give the man repsect and credit where its due. I say the Ghost is champion before the middle of 2009. And with the UFC backing him he will will get the media attention he deserves and will be looked at as the next Anderson Silva. Remember how long it took Chuck Lidell to finally get his title shot he wasnt very notable for a long time. But after he won he blew up.

Nice to see that people like your post, thankfully I’m not one of them.
How can you even compare these guys???
Ok, for you I hope he’ll be the champ… and I say that he’ll never ever be the champ in any weight class (in the UFC).
I don’t care if he finishes people or not (the fights are boring even if he wins in the first round), that he couldn’t finish David Heath though is a joke… guess Machida was too “elusive” again.
Beating Heath via unanimous decision ain’t good, the fight was so boring that Spike TV did not even show it on their broadcast, they showed an undercard fight instead (all other main card fights were broadcasted by Spike TV that night).
One more thing, I do understand MMA quite well… not as much as Machida and the guys and prolly not the most in here, though I’ve been a fan since I saw UFC 1 vhs back in the early 90’s, at that time I was training Judo, Kung Fu and Boxing and I was training these styles before even knewing about UFC amd MMA.
After I quit with Kung Fu and Boxing I started to train Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu and still I was training Judo this was in 1996.
In 1997 I started to train Kyokushin Karate about 14 hours a week.
I have tried lots of martial arts like Bushido, Iaido, Shotokan Karate, Greco Roman Wrestling, Taekwondo, Krav Maga, Jeet Kune Do… prolly more but I can’t remember them all.
To this day I’m not training very much (sometimes Kickboxing or Shootfighting) due to various smaller injuries I got (both now and before and not only from training and competing but from work and a car accident).
I don’t even drink alcohol so I’m not a “drunken fan” and I don’t care if they get knocked out, I don’t even care if some fights are slower with not as much action that ends with a split desicion, just that it ain’t boring, I can live without boring fights!
That thing you said about Joe Rogan must’ve been the best I read in this thread, I actually read it a couple of times because I was thinking “what in the world could this guy and I actualy think alike”, this was it.
You say Machida should have credit… hmmmm… I find him boring and his fights not the slightest watchable and you want me to give him credit, ok.
I know he’s a hard working man that is training hard, I also know he got great and classy skills and that he is very strong… I mean Sokoudjou couldn’t even match his strenght, his cardio is superb, he got everything most fighters want to have but what they can never achieve or atleast get very good at, I have been listening to some intreviews with him also and he’s a classy guy that is somewhat misunderstood, with that said… he’s still very very boring, unwatchable boring that is.
I don’t mean to be rude or hating, everyone can’t like everyone and all and you have to forgive or understand, I don’t like boring fights and there’s prolly many of you that would’ve disliked my favourite fighters… THAT I would have to live with.

Most of the complaints people have about Machida are completely unfounded. It’s simply not true to say that he doesn’t engage – he stays very active, but on his own terms.

Naturally, you have every right to say that you still think that’s boring, but claiming Machida “just runs” simply isn’t supported by facts.

Rashad Evans, now… Well. Even Rashad is not as bad as a lot of people here say Machida is, but he’s a pretty good example of what happens when you try to do what Machida does so well, only you don’t have the skill for it, but get lucky several times. (When your 13 fight no-loss record includes 3 split decisions and 1 draw, two of them controversial, plus an early Christmas gift from Chuck Liddell, you’ve been one lucky SOB)

i totally agree with vette. “I don’t think his style is the problem, it’s not having the killer instinct that is. He has got to start finishing fights and not relying on the point system.”

exactly. finish fights mf! stop trying to win on pts!

just like BJJ in the old days dominating, someone will eventually figure a good way to counter his good yet boring fight style.

I hope everyone in the ufc evolves like machida, how I wish everyone adopts his style, so we will never see submission or knockout ever, so every damn fight ends in a decision, yeah that would be very ENTERTAINING!!! its no boring, is it?

he’s horrible for the sport, period!

Machida’s footwork is catlike, he has incredible balance, instantaneous reaction time, very intelligent fighter, flows extremely well, manages to fuck up his opponents without getting so much as a blemish himself, on top of all that has the ability to execute lightning quick takedowns like we saw with the tito fight, and has very top jits (just got his black belt from big nog, same guy who gave silva his BB). Once he really realizes his toughness and how much he outclasses everyone else at LHW, mark my words hes gonna start fuckin killing people.

The answer to the question posed above is BOTH. He is a great fighter, possibly the best LHW in the UFC, but he is also boring. You can wank on about how he is such a great martial artist, which is true, but most people define exciting by great exchanges, knockouts, etc., stuff that Machida doesn’t provide.

Someone earlier in the thread said that Machida has a “suspect chin.” I want to know where the heck that assertion comes from. I have never seen Machida being even close to rocked. Did you mean to say instead that his chin has never really been tested?

by Pantherhare on Dec 6, 2008 1:25 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

There’s a reason Machida’s chin has never been tested. Because no one has come up with the strategy and tactics to cut off the ring, make him stand, and successfully attack. I really enjoy the debate Machida inspires, but for all of you guys branding him “boring”, “scared”, “elusive”, whatever, the fact remains that his opponents are being manipulated by a fighter with greater skill, technique, courage and heart. Period. If they could hit him, they would. If they could take him down and pound him, they would. So far, no one has done it. You think it takes skill to absorb punishment? Courage to stand and take a punch? Chris Leben is a better fighter than Machida because he’s tough enough to get his head beat in? I like a power knockout as much as the next MMA fan, but Machida is a superior fighter, and I’ll prefer to watch him any time over brawler/punchers who can’t get out of their own way, but prove their macho manhood by standing toe to toe and taking a punch…
