Frank Mir training to take 'Minotauro' Nogueira the distance at UFC 92

Props: SportsLine.com

Quoteworthy:

"If I catch Nogueira and he falls down and for some reason I knock him out or I catch him in a kneebar or some kind of choke and I happen to finish him, I'm going to go for it, but I haven't trained expecting it. I've really expected that this fight is going to be a 25-minute fight. If anything my strategy has been more geared towards making sure I win convincingly on the judges' score cards. Looking at how judges score fights, what counts for points, what do they look for? I've geared my training that way because trying to finish Nogueira is not easy. You see the size of Heath Herring's leg -- he took that upside his head, it dropped him, but he was still in the fight. He was able to recover and he made it back and won the fight."

Former heavyweight champion Frank Mir understands full well just how hard (if not impossible) it is to finish interim division titlist Antonio Rodrigo Minotauro Nogueira. His resilience is the stuff of legend. Accordingly, Mir intends to inflict as much damage as possible during their encounter at UFC 92: "The Ultimate 200" at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on December 27 to score with the judges just in case the five-round fight makes it to a decision. Good plan? And perhaps more important ... can he pull it off?

Good strategy… I am not a big fan of a guy planning on going the distance, I like a guy who plans on finishing fights, but I think Mir is being realistic here. He knows Nog is one of the toughest guys in the business to finish. His cardio has always been an issue so I think this is smart.

by 1-0 via Arm Triangle on Dec 5, 2008 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

This is laughable! Mir fight for 25 minutes. Bet u he gasses by the 3rd!

by john on Dec 5, 2008 3:15 PM EST up reply actions

That is the part I would be worried about if I was Mir. It may be a good plan to beat Nog, (he certainly isn’t going to knock him out, and probably not submit him) but can Mir go the distance himself?

by naturalshadow on Dec 5, 2008 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

I said earlier man, Mir is a comedian. Remember people, this is a guy who plays flag football for cardio.

by NameNotRequired on Dec 5, 2008 3:30 PM EST up reply actions

We’ll see. He’s never had good cardio before so I wonder if he’s doing things differently now. Normally you’d say this would be a really good fight until the late in the 2nd when Mir starts to gas. I hope he has improved his cardio because Nog never stops.

Have to go with Nog. Then again Nog hasn’t looked great recently. I know he’s renowned for taking a beating and still finding a way to win but I think he has also gotten slower. We’ll see. I’m looking forward to it.

by RobH86 on Dec 5, 2008 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

John.. I bet 2 1/2 rounds..for to look like he has a snorkalin his mouth.

by PhilQNY on Dec 5, 2008 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

My favorite Nog line of the show .. " I ain’t playing around.. " I love it.

by PhilQNY on Dec 5, 2008 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

how bout when he said to that vinny kid “you are my enemy now”

by brendan on Dec 5, 2008 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

that was scary.. next to Wandy.. he is the last guy I want calling me his enemy.

by PhilQNY on Dec 5, 2008 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I’m not saying its gonna work, but its the best strategy to win

by 1-0 via Arm Triangle on Dec 5, 2008 5:52 PM EST up reply actions

Mir has gone past the 3 minute mark only 3 times in his career and he looked drained to the point of exhaustion each time.

It amazes me that fighters in no way hide the fact that they dont reveal their real gameplan ahead of a fight yet everybody takes their word for it during fight promos.

Nog never quits. He has been in 20 minute fights with Fedor in which he took
relentless poundings and was still a live threat at the closing bell. Mir has hardly any experience going deep in a fight, and he looked absolutely terrible each time it has happened. We are talking about possibly the toughest fighter in the sport against a who has shown a tendancy to cover up and call it a night.

I do like Mir and think he can submit Nog though. If Barnett can have him in a knee bar as the round expires then Mir can be threat to submit him. I dont get why people are acting like Nog is more prone to big shots then Mir, Mir took two big right hands down the middle in the Vera fight and has never shown great defense on his feet, sans for push kicks.

by I,Claudius on Dec 5, 2008 11:43 PM EST up reply actions

You make it sound like Mir is on the same level as Barnett. Mir might wish that he was, but he definately is not. He is not in the same league as Barnett.

by Ade on Dec 6, 2008 5:14 AM EST up reply actions

Listen up boys. Dont listen to this crap thats spewing out of Mir’s mouth. I say it everyday: Mir is the heavyweight Travis Lutter…..He just doesnt have the cardio and work ethic to go for 25 minutes. It will NEVER happen! Remember when lutter was awarded a title shot against Anderson, and he came in fat and over weight? THen he was given another chance at a big fight against Franklin and he gassed after 1 round? WE tend to think because its a HUGE fight that Mir will actually be conditioned, but I PROMISE you all that it wont be the case come Dec 27th!

Nog is going to severly out class, this b-level fighter/Marketing creation known as Frank muRRRR!!!!!

phil: 2 1/2 rounds is more like it, I gave him 3 to give the fat fuk the benefit of the doubt!

by john on Dec 6, 2008 11:22 AM EST up reply actions

B-level my ass, he freakin owned and finished Nog, something Fedor couldn’t do in more than 1 attempt. It wasn’t even a fight. You guys should give Mir the respect he deserves. Forget about a few fights he didn’t look to good in because he was still recovering from a severe injury. He’s more than back now and the HW division better look out.

by Gord on Dec 28, 2008 1:08 AM EST up reply actions

Translation: I’m going to try to go the full 25, which I can’t really do. Either way, I’m going to try to beat him and he will ultimately submit me. I’m okay with this, because I can go the full 25, in theory.

by Jeff on Dec 5, 2008 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

odds are up for the K1 GRAND PRIX this weekend… Badr Hari and Jerome LeBanner are both VERY live underdogs at +125 and +140!! place your money down now!

by brendan on Dec 5, 2008 6:42 PM EST up reply actions

I’m taking Frank Mir in this one. Seems focused to me and I think were going to see the Mir of old in this one !!!!!!!!!

by Liddell-Marquardt-GSP-Sherk on Dec 5, 2008 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

Even the Mir of old didn’t have good cardio but I hope he’s in shape and aggressive. I don’t mind who wins this one. I’ll just enjoy the fight.

by RobH86 on Dec 5, 2008 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

Seriously, Mir on GH and Test wouldn’t win.

by Mrs.Featherbottom on Dec 5, 2008 9:03 PM EST up reply actions

it’s not that were going to see a “Mir of old”. We’re going to see the New Mir. The Mir that is totally mentally prepared than 2007 and late ‘06 when he first came back from his accident. You guys can keep doubting him all you want but remember this, he was 24 when he got hurt and it took him until last year 28/29 to get back to himself mentally. Just wait to you see what that means for his abilities. CAn’t wait to see him destroy Nog!!!

by Anthony on Dec 5, 2008 5:24 PM EST up reply actions

Even the Mir of old wouldn’t win this fight.

by mmanutz on Dec 5, 2008 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

I took Forrest, but I just don’t see it in Mir, everything he’s good at, Nogs better.

The pre-accident Frank Mir is a myth.

by R/p on Dec 5, 2008 7:29 PM EST up reply actions

Here here….overated since day one and completely outclassed in this one.

by Ca$z on Dec 5, 2008 8:06 PM EST up reply actions

I agree, I have always thought he was overated. He has had a couple of good fights and that was it. I could never understand what all the fuss was about.

let’s not forget that nogueira went 3 rounds with heath herring who basically sux.

by shamo84 on Dec 5, 2008 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

herring would beat mir

by roy on Dec 5, 2008 7:34 PM EST up reply actions

And if Herring wasn’t an IDIOT, he may have taken it!

by Jon on Dec 5, 2008 7:52 PM EST up reply actions

i think hell put up a fight for the first round, maybe 2 and then he will gas and nogueira will submit ot TKO him

by brendan on Dec 5, 2008 3:03 PM EST reply actions

Well at least Mir has the right mindset going into this fight. You can’t say he is taking Nog lightly.

by Reether on Dec 5, 2008 3:03 PM EST reply actions

that’s the smart way to approach this fight! I’ve been saying for a few days now, a lot of you are underestimating mir. I think he has a legitimate shot at winning this fight. He broke tim sylvia’s arm when tim was in his prime and juicing. The motorcycle accident had a big effect on his life, but now he’s back. Listening to him commentate, he obviously is very knowledgeable, and will have a good game plan coming in. I think Nog will pull it off, but do give Mir a great chance. With these odds, I think it’s crazy not to throw a few hundred on mir!

@brendan

Dont count him out, there have been much much crazier things happen in the cage this year. Chuck.. Forrest… even Faber

by enzo-enormous on Dec 5, 2008 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

yeah but rashad and mike brown have knockout power, mir does not… and neither chuck nor faber have the chin that nogueira does… so that rules out the “getting caught” and “punchers chance” element… which is a significant underdogs best chance to win in mma

by brendan on Dec 5, 2008 6:40 PM EST up reply actions

I really enjoy his commentary on WEC. I didn’t enjoy hearing his cornering on tough this week. When he kept saying “Threes” " Strike in threes" “Three”, I was having bad flasbacks of matt serra “Breath” “Breath”

by James S on Dec 5, 2008 3:17 PM EST up reply actions

I totally agree about his commentary. He has come off as a bit of a jerk this TUF. The more famous the fighter the worse he coaches.

by Landowner on Dec 5, 2008 3:20 PM EST up reply actions

I thought Tito was a very good coach.

by Jeff on Dec 5, 2008 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

I was not a huge fan of titos but so far i think he’s been the best coach on tuff so far.

by big billy on Dec 5, 2008 6:50 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, but the “threes” worked the few times his guys listened!
breathing is the most important thing to remember, and easiest to forget when in a fight, I though serra was a good coach/corner man!

by kevin on Dec 5, 2008 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

It worked when they listened and would have worked the times they didn’t listen. It was just bad memories.

by James S on Dec 5, 2008 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

You’re right kevin. Serra is a great cornerman, except he’s got that awful accent! But I gotta say, if you asked me who would win this fight 2 months ago, I would have said Nog without blinking, but if Mir comes in a executes a good strategy(without gassing) he could shock a lot of people.

by allamerican on Dec 5, 2008 5:46 PM EST up reply actions

Ha ha James, yeah “Breathe Joey, breathe, thats good, breeeeethe”

Hell i like Serra tho, he was one of the coaches that it actually seemed like he gave a sh*t about his fighters. In that list is…

Randy
Tito
Ace
Nog

by Nick J on Dec 5, 2008 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

Franklin was the worst coach of any season. The guy couldn’t motivate for shit and had the personality of a doorknob. Tito and Serra have been the best coaches so far. Also Mir has no chance in this fight.

by tyler on Dec 5, 2008 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

i wish you would have posted before me Nick J. I was stumbling on the spelling of “breathe” and now i know how to spell it. Its just not a word I type very often. It doesn’t help that i am a complete ot.

by James S on Dec 5, 2008 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

tyler, I thought Franklin was a good coach. He might not have a had a lot of personality but but at least he wasn’t an @ss hole like Highes.

by RedDog on Dec 5, 2008 5:53 PM EST up reply actions

kevin mir sucks and he will prove it, tim didn’t respect mir and thats why he lost and i would bet money mir would never beat him again, i would say mir has great bjj and thats why he might match up with nog well and make a fight out of it but never win and he would never beat any decent hw.you bring up tim and that is his only decent win(yeah he beat lesnar but it was his 2nd fight and he would never beat him again).

by roy on Dec 5, 2008 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

you make good points roy, I just see mir as better than most of you give credit. like I said, I don’t see him winning, but give him a better chance than most!

by kevin on Dec 5, 2008 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah for sure he’s better than most people give him credit for. I think people have the image of the bloated Mir in their heads. The one that got demolished by Vera. We all know he’s not that bad.

Still he did lose to Ian the Machine Freeman so…I don’t know. I think Nog wins this but I’ll be interested to see how competitive it is and what kind of condition Frank is in. He’s definitely not a walkover.

by RobH86 on Dec 5, 2008 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah my image of Mir is tarnished from the Cruz fight where his face was a complete mess and he was severly gassed halfway through the first round. Did not look like someone capable of ever being top 15 let alone champ again.

I’ve got Nog all day long in this one, its a very easy pick.

Nogs standup is waaay better than Mirs, if you cancel out their jits (i know its playground logic) and roll in Mirs woefull cardio this is the easiest title fight to pick for a while.

Mir will be gassed by mid way through the 2nd and Nog will mount and force a TKO, bet the bank on it.

by Nick J on Dec 5, 2008 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

He was woeful against Marcio Cruz too. He really wasn’t ready to fight.

by RobH86 on Dec 5, 2008 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

roy. do you understand anything about talent in a sport? Because, buddy, Mir has loads of it and he will show you on the 27th. Gauranteed.

by Anthony on Dec 5, 2008 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

loads of talent? you must have a problem understanding if you think mir is going to win.i will make ant bet you want mir has great bjj i give him cerdit for that but he is no where near a elite and he will not beat nog.maybe he should rematch cruz or vera, and i hate when people say the mir of old he sucked than too.

by roy on Dec 5, 2008 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

dude he was 24 when he took the belt!! What do you want him to be like at that age? Don’t forget that he was an up-and-coming fighter at the time when he got in the accident. Since then it’s taken him 4 years to fully recover both physically AND MENTALLY (the crucial point). He now has fully dedicated himself to the sport and improved tremendously. I don’t care if you don’t believe that now but you’ll see it on the 27th and hopefully believe it then. Talent wise, at 29 years old, he’s wayyyy above Nog.

by Anthony on Dec 5, 2008 5:31 PM EST up reply actions

Anthony must be either Mir or his little brother.

by chefdaddy on Dec 6, 2008 10:57 AM EST up reply actions

I’ve been saying it since September that all of you are overlooking Mir. But I don’t mind. You guys are going to lose the kids college fund while I pick up some real nice vacation money. Mir is going to TOOL Nog. Absolutely beat the crap out of him. Sylvia beat him up for almost three whole rounds and now look where Sylvia is? Yeah, trying to get a fight with Ken Shamrock! LMAO Nog is a guy that likes to stand and bang but the problem is he makes so many mistakes. The key then, as his opponent, is to beat him up over the course of five rounds and not carried away trying to put him away. You can’t afford to make a mistake on the ground because that’s all Nog needs. Mir is the perfect guy to beat Nog. Because he knows all of this. And also, he’s not going to make a mistake on the ground. IF anything the mistake on the ground is going to come from Nog, after he’s been knocked down and he’s briefly dazed.

So all of you can go on doubting Mir and worshipping the old guy, put all your money on him, I dare you, cuz Mir is going to make me a wealthy man.

by Anthony on Dec 5, 2008 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

How much did you put on him and at what odds? You seem very confident so am pretty sure you must have placed the money a while back.

Phil, I respect your comment, but I think that is exactly the point! Nog looks like an old run down “rough life” guy and hes only 2 years older than Mir! I would have guessed 11 years older….as far as Nog’s record, he has done some impressive things and I agree that as of right now, he is the #2 HW in the world….however, I believe Nog’s time is up, he is already burned out because he started too early and has been in too many battles, its amazing because he gets beat up in every fight but pulls the win out on his talent, but I think it is time for NOG to move on. This is a new era in MMA, and if Frank Mir can dedicate himself 100% to being in the best physical condition possible, I truly believe he can win. I would rather see Mir win, because I want to see the rematch between Brock and Mir.

by Chadx23 on Dec 5, 2008 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

i’m with PhilQNY.
Nog will walk through Mir, then Lesnar. i understand being a fan of Mir because he is a cool guy but to think he has much of a chance against Nog shows a lack of MMA knowledge. it is MMA so i won’t say it can’t happen but the chances are slim to none.

if anything i’d say Lesnar presents a bigger challenge then Mir.

by jomamma on Dec 5, 2008 5:36 PM EST up reply actions

lmao, who’s Roberto Travern? How about a 4-time BJJ black belt champion, that’s who he is. A guy way more decorated than Nog who Mir broke his arm in under a minute in his first MMA fight!!

lets skip ahead to after the accident when he still hadn’t recovered fully mentally until the Hardonk fight…

Hardonk, perhaps a top 5 HW in striking ability with what Joe Rogan has gone on record as saying the most brutal leg kicks in the sport… he submitted him in the 1st rd. Thats easier said than done against a guy that powerful. That’s all I’m saying.

Lesnar: Mir was facing a pretty unknown commodity with a clear ground weakness while he was a wizard on the ground…hmmm, what would you do? yeah, take the fight to the ground. Unlike your boy Couture who got tooled on the ground by Lesnar, Mir kept his composure, was never rattled, and eventually got the knee bar. That takes skill bud. I’d like to see what you’d do getting trashed with hammerfists the size of lunch buckets like Mir was.

by Anthony on Dec 5, 2008 5:40 PM EST up reply actions

wow jomamma! Nog won’t walk through Mir. He will probably beat him, but he won’t walk through him. Lesnar is going to beat Nog IMO. He’s just too freaking big and strong. I don’t think Nog will be able to control him, and Nog’s face will be a mess due to hammer fists from hell!

by LJ on Dec 5, 2008 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

Anthony – travern was decorated but doesn’t come close to werdum. Nog trashed his ass. Hardonk – come on man, what’s the point of all the striking skill if you can’t stuff a takedown from across the cage by a guy limping on one leg? As far as your lesnar comment – Mir didn’t keep his composure buddy. Rewatch the fight in slow motion. He had his eyes closed and was just pawing at whatever limb he could feel. Even Mur admit that his BJJ is not on par with Nog (check bloodyelbow interview).

by NameNotRequired on Dec 5, 2008 11:49 PM EST up reply actions

Nog takes this one but you can’t down play wins from Mir, that’s like GSP luckily beat Penn, a win is a win, Brock was killing Mir untill the end and then got caught but so what that is the sport

i think mir has all the fighting skills to win this fight, but as we have previously seen his cardio sucks. I think if he somehows gets his cardio up to a championship level i see him winnin this fight.

by matt on Dec 5, 2008 3:09 PM EST reply actions

I find it hard to believe that anyone can think Frank Mir will win this fight. Is it possible? Yes. Likely? No. Mir doesn’t have a great chin, Nog does. Mir’s jiu jitsu is really good but Nog’s is probably better. Striking? Please….

Nog has him beat just about every department, except MAYBE wrestling. You think Mir is going to lay and pray Nog for 5 rounds? That’s the only possible way I see him winning.

by Ballam on Dec 5, 2008 3:16 PM EST reply actions

Nog’s BJJ isn’t significantly better than Mir’s. Sure they can both sub each other but I see their BJJ cancelling each other out for the most part. Unless of course Mir gases. Then I could see Nog sinking in a RNC. Sometimes there’s nothing you can do to defend it when your that exhausted. Ask Shogun.

Striking?…Not really sure but an advantage I think to Nog if we’re talking just boxing. I say I’m not really sure about the all round striking because I think Nog is slowing down! Wrestling? Definitely an edge to Mir. Do I think Mir can lay and pray to a decision? Well no but he may give it a good go.

I think Mir has a better chance than most are giving him but I think Nog still takes it.

by RobH86 on Dec 5, 2008 4:01 PM EST up reply actions

The only thing Mir has over Nog.. is leg kicks.. that’s it. Box. Thai. Greco- Roman Clinch.. Nog is by far more superior.. in all honestly.. Nog is just on a different level.. then Mir. As a fighter.

by PhilQNY on Dec 5, 2008 4:48 PM EST up reply actions

Completely agree. and I love your post above. I think this fight is going to be a rude awakening for a lot of people, particularly Mir. Oh, and the other thing Mir has over Nog that you forgot, and this is very important to Frank: Hair. He has better hair and leg kicks.

not after the ultimate fighter semis ended. http://www.spike.com/video/exclusive-frank-mirs/3071707

^^ Lay n Pray with a BJJ guy as good as Nog is not a good gameplan! Mir has the right game plan but it’s gonna be tough for him to last 5 rnds without gettin caught. We shall see!

by Archer0545 on Dec 5, 2008 3:25 PM EST reply actions

Mir can win this fight. He has great submissions, as good if not better than nog(i know blasphemy), but i believe his size coupled with his ground ability could end it, so long as it is early and he is fresh. He will need to put nog to sleep, or have the ref stop it due to breakage though. Cant see him tapping. If it stays standing at all past the first three minutes, or goes the distance (which i SERIOUSLY doubt), nog wins 99% of the time.

by Patrick Daly on Dec 5, 2008 3:25 PM EST reply actions

Frank Mir doesn’t have the cardio to go five rounds, whereas Nog has been in long wars in his career.

Nog has never been finished in a fight. Not by anyone. Mir is hardly going to be the first to do so.

Sorry Frank, the odds are really stacked against you.

by Graham on Dec 5, 2008 3:27 PM EST reply actions

How is going to win if he is constantly on his back?

by xxBAxx816 on Dec 5, 2008 3:33 PM EST reply actions

mir’s jits is under rated..in my opinion!

by kevin on Dec 5, 2008 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

agreed i think he has just as good of a chance to submit nog as nog does to submit him. I personally dont see either being submitted unless they are rocked or completely gassed

by matt on Dec 5, 2008 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

i don’t think there underrated every should know he has great bjj maybe as good as nogs or at least top 3 in the hw devision but thats about all he has.

by roy on Dec 5, 2008 5:43 PM EST up reply actions

Jits under rated….maybe….but on the whole as a fighter….probably over rated.

by chefdaddy on Dec 5, 2008 5:43 PM EST up reply actions

Yea how could a black belt in jiu jitsu win a fight on his back.. its just impossible lol

I still think big nog will take this fight but im not counting mir out like alot of people.

by mike22 on Dec 5, 2008 3:40 PM EST up reply actions

The only thing Mir has going for him is that he might be physically stronger than Nog, who has taken a lot of punishment over the years and is older than his 33 years. But is Mir that much stronger that he can power his way to a sub early in the fight? Probably not given Nog’s experience fighting some of the best HW’s ever. Nog is nothing if not a survivor and Mir is going to need the fight of his life to get anywhere near a W. But you’ve got to give him a slim chance.

Th truth is, we’re not sure yet just how good Mir is. This fight will answer as ton as to what his actual ability level is. Who knows, he may surprise us.

by revjames13 on Dec 5, 2008 3:36 PM EST reply actions

Exactly. Finally another person hits the nail on the head.

“We’re not sure yet just how good Mir is.”

He’s 12-3, that’s 15 fights. 11 of which happened prior and up to the age of 24 when he won the title after snapping Sylvia’s arm. Everything looked great for him and then bam! he gets taken out in a car accident (on a motorcycle). 4 years later he’s only just recovered mentally and physically. He dominates Hardonk and then gets a big 1st rd win over Lesnar and now he’s on the sideline for 11 months waiting for Nog. I know for a fact he’s been training hard and taking this shit seriously for the first time. He’s really progressed mentally in this sport but everyone who doesn’t follow him ain’t gonna believe that till they see it. Well I’m trying to tell you all, that you will see it on the 27th and its a mistake to write him off like so many of you are doing.

by Anthony on Dec 5, 2008 5:52 PM EST up reply actions

Let’s not forget that Frank Mir will go down in history as the ONLY person to ever defeat Brock Lesnar!

by Chandler, Steve on Dec 5, 2008 3:40 PM EST reply actions

LOL lets not go that far… lesner is good but he could easily lose to big nog, which i think he will… and lets not forget about shane carwin in a couple fights he could challenge him..
Gonzaga would give him a tough fight, lesner is not that great!

by mike22 on Dec 5, 2008 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

If only there was a way that Lesnar and Gonzaga could share the title. Taking turns defending it.

by Chandler, Steve on Dec 5, 2008 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

I think Gonzaga has a better chance than Nog at beating Lesnar. In fact if Gonzo and Lesnar fought tomorrow I’d say Gabe would mess him up.

by RobH86 on Dec 5, 2008 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

Gabe would mess him up badddd

by Anthony on Dec 5, 2008 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

If Mir wins (big IF), I am really curious to see how Lesnar does in the rematch. Mir admitted that he blacked out during Lesnar’s initial assault. I just don’t see Lesnar leaving that arm out for Mir again.

by Nate on Dec 5, 2008 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

It was a kneebar not an armbar.

by damon on Dec 5, 2008 10:13 PM EST up reply actions

I’ll go with my heart and my brain and say Nog wins this by TKO in the second or third round.

by Ballam on Dec 5, 2008 3:41 PM EST reply actions

Bah! I’m surprised Mir could make it to the end of that statement without gassing.

by stevo on Dec 5, 2008 4:08 PM EST reply actions

Is it me or is the only picture in 10 years Nog looks better than his opponent? Must have been edited. Wheres the real Nog that looks like he just went through 5 pride tournaments in a night?

Mir is a professional, and he backs up what he says, I am hoping he has managed to improve his cardio .. really looking forward to this fight.

by stevo on Dec 5, 2008 6:18 PM EST up reply actions

it’s a pretty good interview on sportsline, Mir isn’t as cocky as a lot of people think he is… he thinks nog’s bjj is better so he’s going to mix it up

by Bk on Dec 5, 2008 4:24 PM EST reply actions

Mir really is that cocky. Scince he’s been on the show he’s desensitized to all the cameras there so he shows his true personality. I guarantee you he thinks he’ll put a clinic on Nog. After this match is over he’ll either have to tone it down or most likely come up with an excuse for why he lost. Im not saying he can’t win…
No, I take that back. He can’t win.

by protec video on Dec 5, 2008 9:25 PM EST up reply actions

Does anyone know anything bout cheick kongo’s opponent, mustapha al-turk? i havent been able to find anything on him or any fight videos of him

Big Nog wins by TKO in round 2

by scottythebody on Dec 5, 2008 4:57 PM EST reply actions

After reading all these comments for NOG to win…I have come to the conclusion that I would rather see NOG win, because I SO BADLY want to see Brock crush him like a roach. I just do not like NOG’s style of fighting which is get beat up and pull out a win from nowhere. When Brock faces NOG, the size will be the determining factor, that and if NOG takes one punch from Brock, he is getting dropped. Brock’s punches are like Heath Herring’s kicks, and when NOG goes down, Brock aint waiting around like HH, he is going to pounce right on him and finish NOG’s worn out a$$ off!

I cannot wait!

by Chadx23 on Dec 5, 2008 5:03 PM EST reply actions

Brock’s size??? Maybe you should check out Nog vs Sapp.

by Wannabe on Dec 5, 2008 5:31 PM EST up reply actions

Brock is a beast no doubt about it but Nogeira will tame the beast and Brock can then have his revenge on Mir.

by jomamma on Dec 5, 2008 5:44 PM EST up reply actions

hope nog kicks mirs ass, I don’t like his attitude and don’t like the guy, I half want to see him win and then see lesnar give him a humiliating beating worst than he gave randy. I over all want nog to win and he most likely will and I’m not sure who I would be rooting for lesnar or nog. lesnar is a cocky sob but part of me roots for him because he’s so green and it would be cool to see nog get his ass kicked. Once lesnar rocks nog he should just stay on him like he did randy and pound away with those massive fists.

by nathan on Dec 5, 2008 5:40 PM EST reply actions

I think that pic is little nog???

by McArthur on Dec 5, 2008 6:21 PM EST reply actions

Frank Mir will win by superior cardio.

by zzz on Dec 5, 2008 8:14 PM EST reply actions

Mir can train cardio all he wants, when he starts to get hit he fatigues. He has never handled damage well at all. Its like when he fought Ian Freeman and had full control of his ankle and was ready to tap him, as soon as he started to get hit he could not get the finish, despite being in the position to get the tap.
Mir’s entire career has been centered around getting the sub in the first few minutes, before the fighters get slippery.

by I,Claudius on Dec 5, 2008 8:36 PM EST reply actions

i guess brock didnt hit mir once then?

by Egads on Dec 5, 2008 10:28 PM EST up reply actions

Ian Freeman was a little more experienced then Brock was at the time. Beating somebody who had virtually no real time submission experience with a telegraphed knee bar isnt really the same thing, no?

by I,Claudius on Dec 5, 2008 11:20 PM EST up reply actions

I dont think anyone who has watched Mir’s career can think he doesn’t have a problem getting hit, he has always winced and shown a tendency to cover up. He couldnt even stand up after the Freeman fight and he was hardly getting hit with bombs.

Since his debut he has beat two guys in his career when the fight went longer then 3 minutes; Dan Christianson (in a fight that a lot of people thought he lost) and Wes Simms (in which he was at the point of exhaustion facing someone who is about as bottom of the barrel as it gets ).

I like Mir, but this talk about him all of a sudden being a cardio machine is laughable.

by I,Claudius on Dec 5, 2008 11:28 PM EST up reply actions

I think nogueira will win if it goes to the ground but if it stays standing its 50/50 because anything can happen.

Also just for the record the worst coach in the history of TUF was Ken Shamrock and the best was Tito Ortiz.

by LIVE LORDS on Dec 5, 2008 9:43 PM EST reply actions

@Wannabe…..you are so right man….after watching that fight i trully understood how size in MMA isnt everything and how amazing Nog was in showing the world how to school a giant.

paul “semtex” daley looked impressive with a 2nd rnd tko over always tough john alessio. i think daley would fit right in with either strikeforce or the wec, but still needs to work on his take-down defense(not grabbing he ropes). sorry to see sometimes fellow maniac roger"the hulk" lose his mfc lhw belt to emanuel newton. newton is 18-3, so he’s no slouch, and roger showed a lot of ring rust. i only tuned in about halfway through this event, but it looked pretty good from what i saw. still cant stand the ring though. too much rope grabbing.

Roger “the hulk” Hollet that is.

ummmmmm all i can say is….. ufc 92?
uhhhh
@PhilQNY
Who is roberto travern? 4-time bjj champion

Who is Pete Williams? he’s the guy who beat Mark Coleman

This will be where i will stop, because u obviously know knothing about mma, the funniest part was where u asked who tim sylvia was….. well… he is the dude that got suspended for doing steroids and he was the defending HW champion. He tore through many HWs. and mir broke his arm
