UFC Quick Quote: Phillipe Nover draws comparisons to Anderson Silva

"Phillipe ... he becomes a mean guy. He's a bad guy when he's going to fight. Anderson Silva ... he's the same way as him."

-- The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 coach Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira compares lightweight finalist Phillipe Nover to his good friend and training/business partner, UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. Before the latest edition of the show even started there was a major buzz about a certain 155-pound fighter who had just about everyone in awe. It turned out to be the Filipino nurse from Brooklyn, N.Y., who finished all three of his opponents while on the show in short order. The lofty comparisons to the accomplished Brazilian world beater will certainly add to the pressure when Nover challenges Efrain Escudero in the tournament-style lightweight final at TUF 8 Finale on December 13 for the "six-figure" UFC contract. Hopefully, all that added pressure doesn't work against him ... or make him faint.

too many frosties??? Anyways, it was extremely impressive…Nover has one of those grips that guys just can’t shake…I couldn’t believe how long he was able to hold Roop’s wrist before he tapped

by McArthur on Dec 4, 2008 9:52 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah man. When he had his arm locked then rolled him onto it, I thought Roop’s arm was history.

You know, I did like Roop though. I hope he beats up Junie’s little punk friend from the show.

A guy like Nover needs to move to a gym that can nurture his talent. I hope he has made the move to one of the higher profile camp. He would awesome at Greg Jackson’s or even Team Nog.

Now the WINNER get a title shot right?? Imagine for a minute that “The Nurse” faces B.J…. Wow, I’d put $ on Nover because if he cought B.J. with 1 shot or got his back and choked him out I would be RICH!!!!!!!!!!!!

No the winner does not get a shot…. that was only on season 4 when the participants were already ufc vets….

Another Filipino talent that could easily go to waste[assuming Vera’s potential is goin’ to be all downhill from here]. Let’s hope not…

CHael Sonnen still running his mouth about Anderson Silva:

“I’m not going to the UFC with a white flag. My flag is red, I’m declaring war. It’s always like that, all fighters when he grabs the microphone says the same thing, they challenge every fighter in the world, except Anderson Silva. A lot of folks don’t have what it takes, before even fighting they’re all ready yellow. I’m not going to do that, it would really disappointing to my fans. I’m the only fighter who wants to fight him, and the only one who has what it takes to beat him.

When I get to the UFC and they give me a microphone his is the name I’ll call out. I don’t think he’s as good as everyone says. He’s a really good fighter, sometimes fantastic, and he really deserves to be champion. But I can surely beat him, and who knows he might beat me too. Anything can happen. But the risk he runs is the same as I do. I’m trying to find out who the real champion is.

I noticed that every time they interviewed Anderson and asked him if he’d fight Paulo Filho, he’d always avoid the subject. And Paulo Filho would do the same. I heard a lot of people say Paulo Filho is a better fighter than Anderson Silva. So let’s think about it: if I can beat Paulo Filho, I can surely beat Anderson Silva too."

by john on Dec 4, 2008 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

I can’t think of too many MW’s in the UFC that would have a hard time with Chael…he couldn’t even finish Paulo who had an out of body experience during a fight

Maybe Diego realizes that his smaller build (in comparison with the other WW) will keep him stagnant.

Or he wants a challenge or its easier for him to make weight at 155.

Thanks for the mind reading display, NameNotRequired!

What did Diego have for breakfast this morning? Let us know!

I would not mind seeing Diego against

Tyson
Nate
Nover

yeah, he looked awesome. Man I was right on about Kristov being junk! I thought maybe his stand up was better than I initially thought, and actually thought that maybe I was too hard on him…but damn! He’s terrible! He swings his hands all over the place, if he was in water, his arms would be like a propeller and he’d be swimming really fast! Junie’s just a straight up douche, I don’t even know why he’s still fighting. The smartest thing he said all season was “I’m done fighting, I couldn’t beat anyone in the UFC.” he’s right, he sucks, he knows it, if he can’t train properly when there is nothing to do EXCEPT TRAIN, how is he going to survive when he has his farm animals flirting with him, and his mom (who’s also his sister) hitting on him. Talk about distractions!

by kevin on Dec 4, 2008 10:35 AM EST up reply actions

You kept hearing throughout the season that Kristov had the best stand-up on the team, but I thought he looked like junk in both of his fights. He had Liddell’s stance with wide open arms that will get him KO’d by anyone with quick hands and his punches looked sloppy. He rarely committed with a punch but instead leaned back to avoid getting hit as he threw his punch. UGLY!

by VNDK8 on Dec 4, 2008 12:40 PM EST up reply actions

I agree 100%, his stand up was not even average, and his ground game is awful. Go get a day job son, I hear wal mart needs security guards!

by kevin on Dec 4, 2008 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

were you not watching the same fight? he almost knocked him out a couple times. vini got lucky to get to the ground. he was about to go to sleep.

and I am pretty sure liddel made a good living with his stance.

by Damon on Dec 4, 2008 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

I guess I must have been watching a different fight, and kristovs last one too. I called out his standup weeks ago, and if you think it looked good, you’re nuts!
chuck made a good living yes, it was a loose comparison, kristov isn’t even in the same league as chuck on chuck’s worst day and kritovs best. Chuck can wrestle, kristov is a guy with 15 pro fights and a failure against a bunch of guys with next to no experience.
go back and watch kristov’s few fights, you really think he’s got a strong stand up game?

by kevin on Dec 4, 2008 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

Yup, his standup isn’t even average compared to anybody in the UFC. He keeps his hands down and out. If he fights anybody with a lick of training, he’s going to sleep.

He looks like one aggressive MF but, the only downside to being compared to someone like Anderson Silva is trying to live up to that level. People are going to criticize harshly if he doesn’t succeed. I can see it now…“I can’t believe they compared this guy to Anderson Silva”… But besides that, he looks like he could do some damage in the LW division.

by JimmieGreens on Dec 4, 2008 10:42 AM EST up reply actions

by kevin on Dec 4, 2008 6:05 PM EST up reply actions

hey john, what do you think? If I were on that show, and assaulted by Junie, I would be suing Zuffa as well as spike T.V. I’m on a reality show and was given a guarantee of safety and not having to worry about being assaulted outside the octagon! In my eyes, zuffa and spike would be considered in breach of this guarantee!

by kevin on Dec 4, 2008 10:45 AM EST up reply actions

ABSOLUTELY!!!! Kev, I would be part owner of Zuffa in no time! lol. Damn right I would sue, and I have to imagine that I would have a good case.

by john on Dec 4, 2008 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

I agree, jeff can enlighten us more I’m sure, but the contract specifically states no physical altercations. I would say I couldn’t train properly out of fear of assault and being blackballed from the UFC if I complained. This would hold water after seeing Dana basically tell the guys Junie was staying, and then putting it in question form. anyone else have any thoughts on this?

by kevin on Dec 4, 2008 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

Kev. It would be funny if someone pressed charges against Junie. He could have probably gotten arrested for some of the crap he did. Then, tag that onto the lawsuit and you should do well for yourself. lol

by john on Dec 4, 2008 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

Jeez seems I missed a lot. I gave up on TUF because I couldn’t bare watching the boneheaded antics any longer.
Nover is for real. I’ve seen a couple of his fights and as advertised he’s very good and has huge potential.

It kind of looks silly all those guys laughing at him for fainting at the beginning. It wasn’t funny, well I don’t think so anyway.

by RobH86 on Dec 4, 2008 6:22 PM EST up reply actions

How do you know what the wording in the documents that where signed by the casts say? I am sure when theses “contracts” where drawn up they made sure that if someone was assulted out side the cage that Zuffa and Spike where not responsible for any liability…

by jet99 on Dec 4, 2008 11:51 AM EST up reply actions

The contract might say that Zuffa wouldn’t be liable, but you would have a very difficult time convincing a judge or jury that you shouldn’t be liable for an assault that occurred where you not only controlled the living environment and chose who stayed or left, but also knew that the assailant (Junie) had already struck people and had violent tendencies.

It’s a slam dunk case, except for the provable damages, since the guy wasn’t really hurt and would have a hard time selling the “fear for his life” claim because he’s a pro fighter.

by cmon on Dec 4, 2008 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

I missed the episode, so I can’t say I saw the assault. Kevin, are we sure that the contract states no physical contact outside of the cage and practice? Did the assault happen at the house or in the practice center?

If the contract has no reference to assaults, then we are dealing with an implied clause. Tough to make that hold up.

Cmon, change “fear for his life” to unable to perform his job, because of fear/mental anguish/intimidation. Thus, regardless of him being a pro fighter the understanding is he can’t perform the work he was retained to perform; and his non-performance is based on working conditions outside his control.

by Jeff on Dec 4, 2008 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

well I know one thing for sure, all reality shows have the “no touch” clause. It’s for a simple reason, to avoid fights. It’s why on some shows you see guys baiting other guys, hoping to get hit and have the other thrown off. After the first chance, I think anyone in the house has a good case, especially with the favoritism shown to Junie! They were afraid to come forward, afraid to have confrontation etc.

by kevin on Dec 4, 2008 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

even if you had a legit case, zuffa and all their money could keep you in court for years you would go broke long before you saw any money if at all.

by Egads on Dec 4, 2008 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

how exactly would you go broke? you just go get a job, and something tells me, zuffa would settle

by kevin on Dec 4, 2008 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

Injured plaintiffs don’t “go broke” from a lawsuit because their attorneys foot the bill until they get paid by the defendant. It’s not like Randy Couture, who was a defendant being sued for breach of contract.

by cmon on Dec 4, 2008 4:47 PM EST up reply actions

thank you cmon! If this were true, zuffa would be in the wrong any how, so there would be an immediate settlement. thats just my guess!

by kevin on Dec 4, 2008 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

I just read an interesting take on Nover..he’s the Bisping of the Philippines was the quote! Dana is disappointed with Vera, the UFC is going to the Philippines next year, they need a “local hero” to build up and hype.

by newfie on Dec 4, 2008 9:53 AM EST reply actions

Fainting Phillipe? I hope its a good fight, but I think Nover is going to be too much for Efrain. They’ll both end up getting a contract no matter who wins anyway.

by the_mexicutioner on Dec 4, 2008 10:02 AM EST reply actions

can’t wait to see Nover against some of the vets…its always hard to tell how their skills will translate. For example, I thought Manny Gamburyan would do much better than he has…also a little surprised at how good Nate Diaz is

by McArthur on Dec 4, 2008 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

Yea good point, i’d like to see Nate vs Phillipe at some point. If he’s being marketed as the next A. Silva maybe sooner rather than later; after all Danzig came off the show had one UFC fight then went straight to Guida, maybe Nover will get bumped up the ladder as well.

by O damn he got caught on Dec 4, 2008 10:44 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed on Nate. I saw him as the guy who Cory Hill tossed around like a rag doll until taking him down like an idiot. Didn’t expect him to be nearly as good as he ended up being.

by CARNAGE on Dec 4, 2008 10:50 AM EST reply actions

he only through a few punches (only needed a few)…but Mir said that his speed and accuracy reminded him of Anderson

by McArthur on Dec 4, 2008 11:45 AM EST up reply actions

oh, i guess i missed that part. I only remember the comment about his mentality being like silva. Nover does turn it on in the octagon. i bet he uses some sort of Thai Chee, or is it Chai Tea or somethin. he gets so focused and mean. I think he harnesses the power of his warrior ancestors.

by the matt king on Dec 4, 2008 12:19 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t really see the similarity to A.S. either. He’s a good fighter compared to the guys he faced on the show, but that doesn’t necessarily say that much. It’s way too early to tell if he’s that good from what little we’ve seen of him. Also, I’m not convinced that he will beat Efrain. Efrain is unbeaten in 10 and he also easily took care of all the competition on the show. It should be a good fight though.

by Caknakker on Dec 4, 2008 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

30-27 dec nover. Efrain will be very bloody

by the matt king on Dec 4, 2008 6:13 PM EST up reply actions

Nover appears to be a good fighter, but can’t seem to lose the ‘fainting’ aspect… which is really too bad b/c it’s completely undeserved, and he proved that now!

BTW, no one is saying he’s the next and A.Silva, this is yet another case of things getting blown out of proportion. All Nog said was that Nover gets mean when it’s fight time! Not to take away from what he’s accomplished, like White said… he’s talented and could have a good future at UFC.

I don’t think anyone ever said Nover’s the next A.Silva… at best there was a few vague comparisons, but far from saying anything like that. My point being, it’s getting blown out of proportion, and you just helped prove my point.

by JS on Dec 4, 2008 6:33 PM EST up reply actions

personally, i think he should own the whole fainting thing. make it a running joke. if i were him i would take it as my nickname; “Fainting” Phillipe Nover! why not? most everyone remembers you that way anyway.

what about Mir- What a piece of shit that guy is! He said in an interview that he would break his Mom’s arm to win the belt-what an ass! Also, when he coaches he tells his fighter to hurt or cut the other person, instead of telling him pointers to win. Mir reminds me of the asshole teacher from the karate kid the one that told his student to “sweep the leg”. Also, he told Junie to win to show the people that a disturbed person makes for a good fighter. And Mir also said his wife did not see him as a man after his motorcyle accident. I hope Big Nog puts Mir into a streacher, and Mir has to retire, because Mir is a real piece of shit! Even if Mir wins he will have to face Lesnar again, but this time Lesnar will destroy Mir!
