Chuck Liddell: Fighting Randy Couture for a fourth time 'doesn't make sense'

Props: YouTube.com
Quoteworthy:
"The rumor that me and Randy are fighting in June ... no one said a word to me. And I don't want to wait until June to fight. So we'll see what happens. We'll have to talk to Dana [White] about that and see what the plans are. But I haven't heard anything about it. I don't know where it came from or who was talking about it. To me at this point it doesn't make sense."
Former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Randy Couture is not the only one puzzled by the rumored match up against Chuck Liddell at UFC 99 at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany on June 13. "The Iceman" also admits he has not been approached about a fourth fight with "The Natural." He goes one step further and affirms what most fans have said since it cropped up -- it doesn't make sense (even though it could make cents). Liddell has lost three of his last four bouts -- two of which were in devastating fashion. He is eager to get back in the Octagon sometime around March, which would put him on the UFC 96 card in Columbus, Ohio. He does not mention any possible opponents but does rule out another rumor: that he will fight Anderson Silva at UFC 95 in February. Well at least we now know who he won't be fighting ... not unless it (Couture) happens for some reason before June.

it would be nice to see him fight in a co-main event against jardine to avenge a loss or to show that he needs to put’em up already (gloves) chuck is my fav fighter but he needs to hang’em up already.

How do you know he would avenge the loss? if he took that fight he might just end up adding another loss to his record!

Man he did an interview where he said that he was offered to bonnar, Houston A, and a couple of other guys but got turned down. Ever imagine that Chucky would suck bad enough that mid/low-tier guys would turn a fight down.

So Chuck did an interview where he said other fighters turned down a fight with him because he sucks. You, my friend, are obviously lacking reading comprehension and are clearly hating. Think about what you just wrote… It makes no sense whatsoever.
by BNF on Dec 4, 2008 1:43 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Of course Alexander and Bonnar would turn the fight down. They would both be crushed by Liddell. It is amazing how people just write off a fighter no matter what he has done. He is still the same guy that less than a year ago was able to beat Wanderlei in one of the most exciting fights ever.
I would also like to see him fight Jardine again. At least that fight makes sense.
by naturalshadow on Dec 4, 2008 1:46 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I am not hating. Look he said he was turned down, so what am I suppose to infer? He is a huge star and most should want to fight him for the recognition and probly the chance to headline especially now that he seems beatable. But they chose to go in different direction. Don’t be surprise if he’s fighting the Tim Boetschs or Matt hamills come 09. Better hope he keeps his hands up against the barbarian.

watching Chuck do his stupid victory ice man dance after KOing someone like Boetch would be pathetic…but you might be right…another loss by Chuck and Dana might just kill himself
by McArthur on Dec 4, 2008 2:15 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Your not hating, yet your comment is filled with it. Do you seriously believe that Bonnar and Houston turned a fight down with Chuck Liddell because sucks too bad? That is simply crazy! I think 99% of people would say they turned down that fight because they felt they had no chance of winning.
by BNF on Dec 4, 2008 2:16 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I am saying that no one sees an upside to winning or losing to him? Two years ago that wasn’t the case. Regardless of outcome a fight against chuck would be a career boost. My point is that i never forsaw a scenario where he would lose so much luster to be in this predicament.
by NameNotRequired on Dec 4, 2008 2:30 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I am a huge Chuck fan and will admit he is definatly close to being done. But lets not forget 2 fights ago and less than a year ago he was involved in one of the most exciting fights ever and won. So to believe he is totally done and has lost all his luster would just be nieve.
by BNF on Dec 4, 2008 2:39 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
BNF, you said the keyword yourself, “ago”. His status in LHW isn’t the same anymore so fighting and beating Chuck wouldn’t mean as much now for those guys. I do think he still got a couple of exciting fights left before he retires.

You don’t think Houston would give up a finger for a win over Chuck?

I’d think Houston would saw off a testicle with a teaspoon for a win over anybody.

I agree that a fight with Jardine would be interesting, but it wouldnt be my choice for Chuck. he si right about a fight against Randy being pointless. I’d like to see Randy fight either Mir or Valesquez (assuming Mir loses to Nog) then fight for the title again if he wins. A rematch with Lesnar or the mutch anticipated fight with Nog. I’d love to see all those fights! As for Liddell, give him Vera, Cane, maybe Irvin!!

No matter who Chuck fights, I think we can all agree he needs to change his approach and not come forward, hands down looking to get the K0. If he utilizes all his abilities, I still see him being a top dog in the LHW division(if and only if he uses the whole skill set).

Anyone else getting a bit worried about UFC 95? Doesn’t look like we’re gonna see Chuck now. I’ve got 6 tickets and if it ends up a bullshit card them tickets can go to the highest bidder on eBay. Silva better be fighting on this card!

He’s got to fight a big name. what about the loser of the Rampage/Silva fight. Maybe put him up against one of the youngbloods. Machida might counter punch him to death but Tito landed a few punches in the first round. Thats all Chuck needs. I don’t want to see him fight nobodies. I would rather him fight a big name, take a whoopin’ and retire. I do not want him to fight a “Seth Petrazelli”….Lose to a nobody. I would love to see him fight Wandi again but I think Wandi needs a title shot. If Rampage loses then maybe that is the fight. I would buy it.

damn right it doesn’t make sense..Chuck ain’t getting younger so the UFC should be thinking of superfights instead of a match that already got Chuck 2-1..let the Iceman fight The Spider or even Luiz Cane just to get him back in track..Couture fight won’t do nothin for him..
by daftmania on Dec 4, 2008 12:59 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
agreed I said this last month….Chuck vs Anderson is not a bad idea both are top ten light heavies and it’s a superfight, Chuck has nothing to gain by fighting Vera, win or lose who cares, big fights.
by Robert on Dec 4, 2008 7:05 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Chuck has no chance to beat Anderson and it doesn’t make sense for the UFC to match up the guy they claim is the best fighter in the world with a guy who’s 39 years old and has lost 3 of his last 4 fights.
by tyler on Dec 5, 2008 12:47 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I wouldn’t mind seeing him fight Randy, as far as I am concerned he should be fightng either Houtston A, Brandon Vera and I would have said Soko before he was cut like they gAve him Jardine when he got beaten by Rampage. I can see why some Chuck fans would want him to fight a bigger name like Anderson Silva, because it gives him chance of reclaiming some of his past glory. Me personally would not be intersted. I had him down to lose against Jardine and Evans, so I find it hard to call any fight that he may be in a superfight. Chuck shuffling around tryng to land his big punch lost it’s appeal a while ago for me. The Houston A fight would be good one for the frst round anyway, he would come out there swinging like Wandy did with no game plan at all and it would make for an exciting fight. I am sure that UFC will put on something good to keep is fans happy and try make as much money out of hi while the still can.

If Dana and Joe Silva ok a Liddell/Anderson Silva fight his retirement will come shortly after.I agree about Liddell vs. Cane or maybe a Liddell vs. Jardine rematch might be the way to go for Chuck.

chuck to slow for either one. the fact of the matter is chucks style has always been to stand up w. people. stand up guys generally fade out the quickest. the first thing to go as you get older is speed. and quite frankly chuck is getting slower. i love chuck but he should call it quits. hes just to slow. yeah he still has the punchers chance but cane or silva would pick him apart on their feet. chuck has only beat one real striker which was wandy. other than wandy chuck has gotten beat standing up by stand up guys.

Thank you Chuck! No one wanted to see that fight. I still wouldn’t mind seeing Chuck test the waters at Heavyweight. If he could stuff Randy’s takedowns back in the day, I don’t see bigger and slower guys being a problem for him now. Either way, Chuck is the man and I will always be a huge fan whatever he does!
by BNF on Dec 4, 2008 1:10 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I am not ready to say that chuck is done just yet, but I dont think he can cut it at heavyweight. Moving up in your old age will get you killed. There are some big boys at HW, like BROC, Carwin, Cain, Herring… no way chuck moves up to HW!
thanks to chuck for not wanting to fight randy again. I do not want to see that again!
I would like to see Chuck vs. Cane, Vera, shogun (after he disposes of coleman)…Chuck could even wait for the winner or loser of Hendo/Franklin fight
by john on Dec 4, 2008 3:49 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe your right John, but I still think he would do fine. Everbody at HW is going to have problems with Carwin, Brock and Cain, so that goes without saying. I just want to see him fighting and a new challenge can sometimes fuel the fire and revive his career.

Don’t forget his death stare from guard. Although lacking in all other aspects of a ground game, he still has a mean death stare off his back. Highly innefective against strikes though.

Always good to hear from the Ice man. Liddell vs Shogun would be great but the UFC would most likey give shogun 3 months between fights and since he’s fighting in Jan. Ice Man would have to wait until April.

I would love that fight as well. Great upside potential for Chuck and if he loses, he was supposed to. On the other hand, is it a good fight for Anderson? If Anderson moves to 205 his next fight there should be for the title. I think he has done more than enough to earn that!
by BNF on Dec 4, 2008 1:49 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Chuck – thanks for the great memories. You were a good champ and never had a boring fight. Your fight with Wanderlei truly did live up to the hype and literally had me on the edge of my seat for a while.
However, your time is over. Like all before you, the game has passed you by. The UFC is now populated by new fighters who exceed you in all aspects of your game.
Please retire now and let us be happy with the way we remember you, despite the KTFO against Rashad Evans.
by Graham on Dec 4, 2008 1:40 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Even if he continues to lose fights, why cant you still remember him as the champ he was? He’s a fighter, he likes to fight. Just because he got KO’d last fight doesnt mean he cant still do his thing. His time is not over, he probably won’t ever be champ again, but he is fully capable of putting on the exciting fights he is famous for. Dont write him off just yet. Personally ill always be happy with the way i remember chuck, even if he loses ten more fights.
by medecine balls on Dec 4, 2008 2:06 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Fighters at the end of their career are always looking for “one more chance”. Dana might keep giving him “one more chance”, but it is debatable whether it’s deserved.
Let’s face it, if Wanderlei had trained smarter and concentrated on sparring more, Chuck would likely be 0-4 in his last four fights.
by Graham on Dec 4, 2008 3:49 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
In my opinion, they should give him a easy fight to get his head right. Not necessarily easy, but someone relatively new. It will give that person a chance to potentially make a name for themself and Chuck to get back on track. I’m thinking Andre Gusmao or Eric Schaeffer (I know hes been around – but he needs a jump start).
by Casey on Dec 4, 2008 1:45 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Agree to disagree. He needs a big name like Vera or Franklin. Maybe feed one of the TUF guys to him (a good combo of namesake and newbie). Maybe a guy like Bader, or from another season like Matt Hamill.
by the matt king on Dec 4, 2008 1:50 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
the last TUF guy KO’d Chuck….I’m just worried that my favorite fighter has been passed by and dont want to see another embarassing loss!
by Chadx23 on Dec 4, 2008 3:08 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, but I was throwing out some wrestlers, who I think chuck could handle. I know Rashad werestled, but as you said, he KO’d chuck. His boxing skills are pretty good and he caught Chuck. I thinkl it would be a disgrace for both fighters to propose a fight between Bader and Chuck, but perhaps Hamill could work. Chuck may or may not be ready (mentally) for a franklin or vera fight at this point. You gotta admit that chuck looked great against Wandy
by the matt king on Dec 4, 2008 6:09 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Gusmao or Eric Schaeffer would also be a waste of time…they are WAY too low on the chart..it would be a no win situation for Chuck…if he wins, he was supposed to…if he loses, HOLY SHIT Gusmao just beat Chuck…see what I mean…Chuck needs to fight a mid to upper tier guy…like he is
by McArthur on Dec 4, 2008 1:53 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I see your point. All I’m saying, is either way, if he loses another fight – he should be out. Might as well try to preserve his career by giving him a walk over on the undercard and get his mental game back. Then give him somebody on the top tier like the loser of the Franklin/Hendo matchup. That way, the can preserve his career a little bit longer.
by Casey on Dec 4, 2008 1:58 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
i know what ya mean and want to agree but i would rather watch the big fights now…he’s 39 and i don’t know if he’s got 2 or 3 fights left in him

I am a huge fan but I wanna see someone who is in their prime… I don’t wanna hear 3 or 4 years from now some ass clown like Rashad Evans telling everyone that if he woulda gotten to fight the Spider it woulda been different. I was one of the first to say that chuck v jardine should be his ext fight!
It makes sense as it was a close fight, a good fight and one the fans want. Further i see chuck winning this fight and i think its a chance that he deserves considering how close that first fight was. plus if he wins it gets him back on track.
I too am very apprehensive about the ufc95 card, personally i bought my tickets thinking that chuck would be on the card, now i feel sick to my stomach that were gony get another rubbish card!!
I wish they would just get jardine v chuck/ a.silva v ?/ and another couple of decent fights, we deserve it Dana after the last crappy card!!!!!!!

OMG I have no idea who Chuck’s next fight is going to be, but who ever it is, its not going to be easy, I wonder if they will sign another LHW from somewhere else to bring into the organization to fight Chuck, perhaps the winner of the TUF to fight Chuck, I would love to see Chuck win the belt again, if that happened that would be awesome, Liddell vs Couture; I have no desire to see that; I think randy would be a huge threat to Liddell; Chuck always wants to avenge losses; toss him Jardine; I don’t want to see Vera fight him; Chuck would destroy him; I can see the loser of the Franklin and Henderson match fighting Chuck; I know there is the possibility of anderson silva; yet both are big names and a big draw and as of right now; I think Liddell needs to get on a roll before fighting anderson silva; Liddell, jackson, alexander and wandelai if any one of them loses their next match it is not good especially wanderlai and Liddell; possibly a rematch with wanderlai; loser retires for good nah screw that I don’t care if Liddell loses again as long as its like a fight that he had with wanderali; no more getting KO by rashad and out kicked by jardine; Liddell stay away from Greg Jackson’s fighters; GSP vs Liddell at catch weight, cane vs Liddell would be interesting actually has anybody mentioned Liddell vs Irvin , and if Alexander fights Liddell who ever loses that match I bet huge bucks that they retire
