UFC Quick Quote: Rampage looking to avenge any and all losses

"Go back and watch that fight. I was kicking the hell out of Wanderlei (Silva). Wanderlei has been a thorn in my side for a while. I want to fight him. Also Shogun, Sakuraba, I want to fight Forrest too, later. I feel like I’m the best fighter in the world. If I fight at close to 100 percent, no one can beat me."
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson sounds off in an excellent article by David Samuels in The Atlantic about his history with Wanderlei Silva from their days in PRIDE. "Rampage" will face "The Axe Murderer" for a third time at UFC 92 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada on December 27.

I don’t want to see rampage saku 2. Sakuraba would die in the ring for sure

Rampage was 100 percent against Forrest and lost.
by c-war on Dec 3, 2008 12:52 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If you define 100 percent as being free from injury, then yeah he was. Personally, I thought he looked a bit soft and nowhere near being in prime shape physically. I recall him having difficulty making weight, not to mention his head clearly not being where it needed to be as witnessed by his actions a few days later. So to me, that was clearly not Rampage at 100 percent.
by Scott on Dec 3, 2008 2:51 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
And who’s fault would that be, everyone elses but Rampage? Excuses excuses.
by the_mexicutioner on Dec 3, 2008 4:11 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
being soft in a title fight is not an excuse that is a sign of a real champ to come in shape all the time becuase u and me pay good money to watch fighters make good fights on ppv’s……

I think that Rampage is going to win this fight, and I think most of it will take place on the ground with Rampage on top…ground n pounding away!
I hope they Bang it out on there feet like Liddell vs. Silva but I am not counting on it! wanderlei needs to work Take down defense, and scrambling back up to your feet to win this fight. Extreme Couture is the right place to get better at those aspects of a fight so this fight will be interesting and probably NOTHING like the previous 2 fights!
I hate to see either lose, but I think Page will win. Wandy is just too small, I think Rampage will take him down, and keep him down.
by john on Dec 3, 2008 10:28 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Wandy may be small but he holds it down at 205- i can see him beating many top contenders (i.e. Rashad evans, he alrady beat jardine, brandon verra etc..) page might be able to avenge his lose against forrest, sakuraba, and maybe even shogun(considering if the shogun of old shows up) but not Silva.. just like how chuck can’t beat rampage rampage can’t beat silva.
by ricky on Dec 3, 2008 10:44 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think Rampage can beat Wandy eaiser then he can beat Shogun! Wandy’s jits is no where near as good as shoguns, and Shogun has all the skills that Wandy has but he also has the size needed to fight at 205 in the UFC.
I love Wanderlei, but I question how he is going to beat a lot of these HUGE 205’ers wrestlers in the UFC. For example, I dont know if he could keep the fight standing against Rashad, Forrest, Rampage, couldnt stop Chuck’s takedowns! I worry about Wandy’s size and TD defense.
I would like to see Anderson and Wanderlei switch weight classes. Send wand to middleweight, send Anderson to LHW!
by john on Dec 3, 2008 11:15 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with John on this one. Wandi cuts little to no weight at 205. He is to small for the large 205ers that have good wrestling skills. I’ve said it before, I think Wandi needs to drop down to 185 in the UFC. He’s not that tall and he doesn’t have a huge frame, it would be an easy cut. If the real Rampage shows up in shape, he can take Wandi down and win this fight.
by brac on Dec 3, 2008 11:41 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I also agree… the sport has moved on since Wandi’s days as the King of Pride…
Pride didn’t have specific weight divisions until late on and never had the structured approach to a title shot that the UFC has.
Wandi looked really small in the fight against Liddell.. He should drop to 185.. He’s already talked about it – a rematch with Hendo!!.. plus there’s Marquart/Bisping/Okami/Leben/Cote to fight – I’d like to see Wandi smash some cans!!
by DanP on Dec 3, 2008 5:53 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
No excuses, he lost fair and square. But if he would have been in shape and fought to his capabilty, then he beats Forrest 8 times out of ten imo.
by brac on Dec 3, 2008 11:35 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree war… enough with the excuses already… its like every time he losees he has a different excuse. “I was destroying Wanderlei” but he left out the part when he got brutally knocked out. He blamed the judges for his loss against Forrest… the more I hear Rampage talk, the more I dislike him. I hope Wandy knees his head right off this time!

Documented excuses:
Sakuraba – “Pride poisoned my food so i was sick”
Wand I – “Cold kicked my ass, i was doing pretty good then
I gassed”
Wand II – “Ref stood us up”
Shogun – “lack of faith and not living right”
anyways, Wand Rd2 stompage.

I’ve still never seen a bunch of Pride fights. I had a UFC On-Demand subscription for most of last year, but I didn’t catch those fights. I don’t know whether they had them up there at the time, as they were still in the process of adding Pride content.
Can anyone else comment on the fight Rampage is talking about? I’ve only see the end of the fight a bunch of times, the part where Rampage goes ZZZZzzzzzz.
by MMACrossifre on Dec 3, 2008 12:07 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Rampage took Wanderlei down in both fights. He proceeded to ground and pound and, again in both fights, there was a questionable standup from the ref.

The first fight was completely one sided. Silva destroyed Rampage. The second fight Rampage caught Silva square on the mouth with a looping right and then took him down. His GNP was mostly ineffective. But in all, Silva dominated the second fight, too. When Rampage had the upper hand, he didn’t do much with it. He couldn’t capitalize and Silva answered everything Rampage offered with twice the damage. There’s a big difference between hitting someone once and “kicking the hell out of” them, especially when it’s evident to any competent viewer that Rampage was the one getting the hell kicked out, almost literally.

Wanderlei, Shogun, and Griffin will and would destroy rampage again. He does not have the mentality to fight them again, i have never like rampage. He’s all about the money and thats all. Wand is going to beat him again.

Dude everybodys about the money. He’s just among the few to vocalize it. IF you don’t think others fighters love the money to your fucking crazy. I don’t like Rampage either but he speaks the truth:
“The Chedda makes it Betta”
That doesn’t mean he doesn’t love fighting, all he is saying money makes it even sweeter. These guys have families to take care of.

I dont think Page will get passed Wandy! Wandys coming into this fight on a high, with his huge ko over Jardine, while Page on the other hand just lost his belt and has his big breakdown. Personally, I dont think it was smart of the UFC to ask Page to fight Wandy. Sure he wants to avenge the two losses but who really knows if he’s ready to come back, give him a warm up before putting him in there with the axe murderer.
Hopefully this fight ends in another devastating ko just like that last two war wandy!
by mmanutz on Dec 3, 2008 12:37 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
And Rampage is coming in highly motivated to avenge 2 losses and get back on the winning track. There is no way that Wanderlei wins this fight.

“There is no way that Wanderlei wins this fight.”
I’m glad you put so much thought into this match up and clearly dissected the likelihood of who would win in this fight. For a second there, I was afraid that I was going to have to watch the match on the 27th. Thanks to you, and your total lapse of any logic whatsoever, I can go to bed early now.
Way to be a fanboy, and show absolutely zero knowledge of the sport. Good post, Jono.
by SkeletonKey on Dec 3, 2008 1:56 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
No way Wanderlei wins the fight? Have you seen their other 2 fights?
Rampage has always had problems with very aggressive fighters as well as the clinch. Just look at any of his fight against the old Chute Box fighters. Gifted a decision over Ninja, KOd twice by Wanderlei, and completely demolished by Shogun.
It comes from the way he blocks punches. He covers up very well, but in doing so is very easy to clinch with. The perfect example is the Shogun fight. Shogun throws a punch or 2, clinches Rampage who is covering up, and proceeds to knee the everloving shit out of him in route to the worst beating of Rampage’s career.
If Silva comes into this fight smart and confident, he should win again. What Rampage should do is take it to the ground and try to win the decision.

:::Yawn::: Rampage must have been watching this fight when he had that mental breakdown…
by Verbal Kint on Dec 3, 2008 1:03 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I just watched both fights again and have to say that with a few very basic changes, Rampage could have changed the two fights dramatically. First off, whenever Silva came at him, Rampage covered up and just stood there opening himself for the Thai clinch and the avalanche of knee strikes. That was his undoing in the first fight. In the second, though, he simply couldn’t accomplish enough on the ground. If he based his gameplan on avoiding the Thai clinch standing and moving to side control on the ground I think he could beat Silva in convincing fashion. Also, I am calling BS on everyone saying there were bad stand ups. There was ONE standup in the second fight and none in the first. In the second, Rampage had beed in Silva’s closed gaurd for the better part of two minutes and inflicted almost no damage. They would have been stood up in half the time in the UFC.
by Clayton on Dec 3, 2008 1:47 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Some very interesting comments about the possible re-match between Forrest and Rampage. I really think Forrest will finish Rampage if they meet again. It will not go to a decision. I would see a submission victory to Forrest.
I also see Rampage losing to Wanderlei by TKO Rd 2.
by DownUnder on Dec 3, 2008 2:35 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Heart says Wand , Head says Page
Silva has never gone to well in the cage, does not suit his ultra aggresive style. His win over Jardine aside IMO hes not really done it in the UFC. Perhaps its the rules that effect him more ?
I see Rampage taking this by decision …. Hes fighting with the Wolfslair and if Bispings game plans are anything to go by, they will do something similar for Page.

You can’t really make a statement on how Wandy does in the cage and saying it’s bad. His early ufc fights happened to long ago so that’s irrelevant. But he’s lost once to Chuck and beat Jardine. So I’d say it’s to early to tell. But I kinda agree the ring suits Wandy better.

I want ‘page to comeback strong and earn another shot at the title, but I think wandy is gonna complete the trilogy with a third victory. If quinton doesn’t have his shit together, he’s going to sleep. I also got: nogeira , griffin , and Kongo. ( haven’t had a chance to share my picks ). I can’t wait for this card! It’s funny how Rampage likes to throw around that he’s a Christian all the time and how God wants him to be a fighter and this and that, but everything the guy does, weather it’s him saying he is going to whip someones ass or running people off the road, seems to totaly contradict any Christian ideology or doctrine I’ve ever heard of. I am by no means perfect, but I dont try to portray myself as some righteous child of God either.

No one’s really taking into account the fact that Wand has switched training camps and has been working with Couture, Forrest etc.. for almost a year now. The Jardine fight didn’t go long but I expect to see a marked improvement in his TDD, his clinch game and his approach to the fights. Wanderlei used to never watch tape on his opponent, used to never come in with a gameplan, he’d just wing it everytime, I’ll bet now after working with Couture and some of these other guys for about a year his perspectives have changed. He’s 32 years old, it’s prime time. He’s got the heart, the insane cardio, the chin, the power, the work ethic; we’re about to see an ass wooping of biblical proportions on this one.

Rampage is over rated….I like him somewhat, but he is all talk and looks. He KO’d Chuck and that was more Chuck going on the decline as his last fights since Rampage beat him have proven….he’s (Chuck)been dropped in his last 4 fights! Sure Page beat Eastman, but come on! Who hasnt?! The he descisioned Hendo in a 5 round fight. In fact, it was kind of a slow fight in my opinion and he didnt really impress me to much even though he showed some good skill on the ground. Then he and Forrest go 5 rounds and he loses a decision! I just think Rampage is overrated thats all I’m saying. I believe Wanderlei will hold the title by the end of 09.

Best lines from the article:
“Behind us, Tito Ortiz and Jenna Jameson are taking their seats. Ortiz’s face looks puffier than it did when he was fighting regularly, while the famous porn star looks ghastly. Her stick-figure legs are covered with tattoos, and a pair of angel wings sprouts from her back. Her eyes make her look like a Siamese cat, less vacant than otherworldly. She talks to Ortiz, greets her fans, looks exasperated, and plays with her hair, but the weird look in her eyes never goes away. It’s like she is looking into an arctic hell where the sun never shines.”
