Fields Dynamite!!: Eddie Alvarez vs Shinya Aoki

Lightweight sensation Eddie Alvarez (15-1) has agreed to face Japanese grappling phenom Shinya Aoki at the Fields Dynamite!! supershow on December 31 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan according to a report by Sherdog.com .

Alvarez was originally scheduled to face Aoki in the finals of the 2008 DREAM lightweight grand prix last July, but Alvarez was unable to continue after his match with Tatsuya Kawajiri and finals alternate Joachim Hansen stepped in to take his place.

Hansen would go on to upset the heavily-favored Aoki and bring home the belt.

Aoki would rebound from that loss - just the third of his career - and submit Todd Moore via neck crank at DREAM 6 in September. The "Tobikan Judan" is a dangerous submission fighter, winning 10 of his 18 fights by tap out.

He'll have his hands full however against the surging Alvarez. In addition to winning five straight, the former Bodog Fight welterweight champion is a perfect 3-0 in DREAM, with a decision win over current grand prix champ "Hellboy" Hansen.

Talented striker vs talented grappler. Don't expect any long-range jabs or boring lay 'n pray in this one.

Star-divide

Fields Dynamite!! is the New Year's Eve supershow featuring a smorgasbord of fighters under the umbrella of Fighting & Entertainment Group (FEG) coming together on one night to try and kick the crap out of each other.

Featuring participants from DREAM, K-1, K-1 MAX and K-1 Koshien, Fields Dynamite!! is going to have a wide variety of fighting styles and compelling match-ups, and could feature as many as twenty fights.

From what I've seen thus far, FEG is holding up their end of the bargain.

Here is the scheduled card to date:

MMA RULES :
Middleweight: Kazushi Sakuraba (24-11-1) vs. Kiyoshi Tamura (32-13-2)
Lightweight: Joachim Hansen (19-7-1) vs. Gesias Cavalcante (14-2-1)
Lightweight: Eddie Alvarez (15-1) vs. Shinya Aoki (18-3)**

K-1 RULES :
Middleweight: Gegard Mousasi (24-2-1) vs. Musashi (49-28-5-1)
Lightweight: Tatsuya Kawajiri (22-5-2) vs. Kozo Takeda (43-18-7)

K-1 KOSHIEN RULES :
U-18 Tournament Semifinals: HIROYA (9-1) vs. Shota Shimada (3-0)
U-18 Tournament Semifinals: Ryuya Kusakabe (2-0) vs. Koya Urabe (2-0)
U-18 Tournament Finals: Winner of HIROYA/Shimada vs. Winner of Kusakabe/Urabe

Stay tuned as this massive card continues to come together.

(**Not yet confirmed by FEG)

How could Alvarez show his face around town if he loses to a guy in rainbow spandex? Alvarez FTW!

by BNF on Dec 2, 2008 11:05 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Alvarez better catch him before he pulls a flying guard. Because, I don’t think Alvarez can defend his sub game. I’ll lay it up and go with Aoki triangle R1. Should be a sick fight though.

Hansen wins by UD AGAIN.
Alvarez by TKO.
Kawajiri in a K1 rules match?? Why?>?
Gimp vs. Glamrock, no thanks.

OFF TOPIC BUT….Is MacDonald/Goveia the main event for the TUF finale????

by McArthur on Dec 2, 2008 10:10 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yep, but Anthony Johnsons fighting as well so makes up for it.

by Nick J on Dec 2, 2008 10:49 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It is a TUF finally, what do you expect. I am glad to see my boy Gouviea getting some recognition. The UFC knows he will be a force at 185. MacDonald is getting KTFO!

YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!

JOHN, did you hear??

Alvarez/Aoki!!! The TRUE Grand Prix Finals!!!!!!!!!!

by ViolentMike on Dec 2, 2008 10:27 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yes Sir! I heard and I am very excited!

I plan on going to AC in January to watch Eddie beat up some can, and a fight with aoki is perfect because win or lose, Eddie wont take much damage in a fight against Rainbow pants so he will be fresh and ready to fight in AC in january!

This is a DREAM fight of mine. Finally a true conclusion to the finals of the GP! u all know that I am a huge fan of both fighters, but I gotta go with my hometown boy Alvarez. One of my close friends is a training partner of Alvarez, so I asked that he keep me posted on his progress and to try and get me to view one of his training sessions, but I am not holding my breath.

2 amazing lightweight fights between 4 of my favorite lightweights: Aoki, Alvarez, Hellboy and JZ. I expect Alvarez to win so we will finally getr to see Alvarez vs. Hellboy 2 for a title!

I want to now talk about changing the Grand Prix Format!
Typically in a Grand Prix. The 1st round happens, each fighter fights once. The next round (months later) the winners who advanced fight to see who makes it to the finals which takes place later on in the same night. I dont like this format because it has robbed us of crowning true tournament champions in a few different cases. Like when Hellboy won, or Misaki won in Pride. Also one of the finalists is usually a lot fresher then his opponent. I hate having the semi’s and Finale on the same night.

I think the format should change, and have the 1st 2 rounds of the tournament on the same night to determine who fights in the finals, and then let botyh winners have a few months to prepare, and both come into the fight Fresh so we can see who is truly best and crown a TRUE Champion!

What do u guys think? do u like the regular format or my new proposed format? Just curious and giving u somew food for thought!

by john on Dec 2, 2008 11:01 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

well it wouldnt really make too much of a difference would it? what if a guy gets a cut in the first round but wins and cant fight in the 2nd round? i guess thats a bit better than winning two fights and not getting to finish though…

by brendan on Dec 2, 2008 2:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

there cant be anything worse then win winning a spot in the finals but not being allowed to participate.

Let the finals be on its own night so we get to see the 2 winners of the semi’s fighting at full strength on an even level playing field

by john on Dec 2, 2008 5:40 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

that would be an improvement i suppose, maybe you should work for DREAM and quit trying to get in with the Dana White/Zuffa Gestapo! lol they might want you to sign away your constitutional rights when you fill out an application!

by brendan on Dec 2, 2008 5:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

JOHN. props for this one. you called it yesterday. cant wait to see this fight.

this card just keeps getting better, i am really looking forward to this fight if alveraz can avoid getting submitted by aoki not many people in the world would be able to submit him than

by brendan on Dec 2, 2008 2:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

sucks i wont be able to see these live. can’t wait for hansen/JZ and now aoki/alvarez! kinda surprised they didn’t put nick diaz against alvarez, since elite had it scheduled. who cares though! i dont know who to pick in either fight.

by synyster on Dec 2, 2008 10:32 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

aoiki via gogoplata

by Scissor Sweep on Dec 2, 2008 10:35 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

great fights! one of the better jap shows in a while. I got gz by dec and eddie via 3 round tko.

by anthony on Dec 2, 2008 10:43 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Some damn good lw fights. Wish they’d found a better opponent for Kawajiri, though. Like Uno to settle that grudge match or something.

Anyway, Hansen vs JZ and Alvarez vs Aoki is awesome. I’ll definitely be tuning in for this one. Good card

by yohnstoppable on Dec 2, 2008 10:49 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Awesome card developing for NYE.

Sakuraba via Sub, Aoki via Sub, Hansen via Decision.

can we watch this card somehow?

by jp on Dec 2, 2008 10:57 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

yeah, if you stay up til 3 in the morning, channelsurfing usualy airs dream and k-1 events.

by b.w. on Dec 2, 2008 11:04 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Bw: Does Channel Surfing air it LIve? NO HdNet for me! :(

by john on Dec 2, 2008 11:20 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

get hdnet already john, all the dream and k1 events plus much more.

by roy on Dec 2, 2008 11:52 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

here here, best purchase I’ve made in a while

by McArthur on Dec 2, 2008 12:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

JOHN. yes, in the past, channelsurfing has aired all of dreams events live. HDnet will be available in over 100 million homes come jan 09, so then alot more people will be able to buy it. i would like to know how much it costs per month. somebody told me it was only between $5 -$10 a month, which sounds awfully cheap.

by b.w. on Dec 2, 2008 12:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

it comes with the hd package bw, the cheapest is 10bucks i think and its in there, so you will get hd and other channels along with hdnet so it really isn’t even 10 dollars.

by roy on Dec 2, 2008 12:37 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I can never find the package for Dish Network even though many people tell me that it exists! Me being the biggest American fan of Japanese mma, it makes no sense that I dont have HdNet!

THanks for the heads up BW!

by john on Dec 2, 2008 1:08 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

sounds sweet. im pretty sure i’ll be able to order it come jan.

nice I have been waiting for this

by Shadow side on Dec 2, 2008 11:23 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I’m getting more and more interested in this card. specially this match. I hope Alvarez avoid the submissions and kos Aoki. Either way I think other than BJ these guys are the best in LW division.

by TKO on Dec 2, 2008 12:37 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

when you say Aoki rebounded at DREAM 6 to win via neck crank, I think you mean that he won via gogoplata from the mount… unless Im mistaken

by ILJO on Dec 2, 2008 1:18 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It was a neck crank after Aoki took Moore’s back while on the feet.

by GregC on Dec 2, 2008 2:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The gogo from the mount (which was amazing, Bas was floored!) was before the loss to Hansen.

by Speedy on Dec 3, 2008 3:56 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

is karitonov fighting overeem for like the millionth time on that card it says so on mmaweekly.com…

by skoler1 on Dec 2, 2008 2:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

They’re 1-1, what are you talking about.

by Speedy on Dec 3, 2008 3:55 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Isn’t Hansen on this card too? Scrap this fight and rematch alvarez v hansen for the belt alvarez should have.

by Lyquid on Dec 2, 2008 3:49 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Alvarez!!!

I’m pretty excited about this fight. Alvarez by first round TKO. Alvarez is my favourite fighter, it’s good to see him fighting in a big name matchup instead of fighting a can. Alvarez vs Penn baby… Please give it to us by the end of 09

by Budgell on Dec 2, 2008 5:43 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I was planning on going to the AC event. Do you think there’s a chance Alvarez won’t fight on that card due to medical suspension (win or lose vs Aoki) or just because it might be tough to fight a few weeks after this superfight??? I’m afraid to buy my tickets and then find out he won’t be fighting. Any thoughts?
