Deja vu: Matt Lindland vs Vitor Belfort Affliction fight set for Jan. 24

Matt Lindland and Vitor Belfort are once again scheduled to collide in a middleweight bout at Affliction: "Day of Reckoning," which is slated for the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on January 24, according to several published reports.
The fight was originally supposed to take place on October 11; however, "The Phenom" had to withdraw because of a broken hand sustained in his 185 pound debut when he stopped Terry Martin in the second round at Affliction: "Banned" back in July.
It didn’t really matter because the entire event was postponed shortly thereafter, giving the former UFC champion more time to heal his injury.
Affliction, in the meantime, decided to go a different route and book Lindland against Renato "Babalu" Sobral at a catchweight of 195 pounds. That decision, however, was soon reversed when "Babalu" stopped Bobby Southworth a few weeks ago to capture the Strikeforce light heavyweight championship.
It now appears that the promotion feels more comfortable staging a true middleweight bout between Lindland and Belfort.
Belfort looked great in his first fight at 185 pounds, taking out Terry Martin in the second round at Affliction: "Banned" with a nice combination that was set up by a flying knee. As we stated earlier, he suffered a broken hand in the bout, but it now appears that he will be ready to rock on January 24.
Lindland, on the other hand, did not appear to be in the best shape against Fabio Negao despite a unanimous decision win at "Banned." Both fighters, in fact, were visibly gassed as the third round expired. Perhaps "The Law" -- considered among the top middleweight fighters in the world -- spent too much time on the campaign trail in Oregon rather than in the gym prior to the showdown.
Belfort could make Lindland pay if he doesn't come in top form early next year.
In addition to the showdown between Belfort and Lindland, WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko is also confirmed to defend his title for the first time against Andrei Arlovski in the main event of the evening.

I hope not roy, I’m hoping vitor comes out looking like vitor and wins, but unfortunately you could be right!

I hope vitor wins this. He’s training at Minotauro team now(all this gym hopping is getting ridiculous) back with Stankie. Let’s hope we see a new Vitor defending the LnP and carving up lindland with quick hands.

I hope he does win, but Lindland is a great fight who can put Vitor on his back and keep him there like Couture did.

this has two possibilities, Vitor coming in and destroying lindland, or lindland taking vitor down and laying on him for 3 rounds. God I hate lindland, I hope Vitor knocks this fool out!

it was as good as it can be when spending the day in stockton. we actually had a really good time with my wife’s dads family. he died when she was 4, and it was my first time meeting them, very nice actually. Not what I expected, but very pleasantly surprised!

I can see Vitor KO’ing Lindland early but if this goes any further than rd 1 the human blanket strategy will be in full swing. Nothing will stop the massive 3 rd dry humping combination the law will put down on the phenom after that.

U r right! We basically ALL must root for Vitor cause if not Lindland will bore the crap out of us! Lindland is just SCUM! He doesnt care about fans, he knows nothing about the concept of being an exciting fighter and entertaining the fans. We like to bitch about sean Sherk, but Stinky Lindland is Much more Boring!
Lindland is the best, most boring fighter in mma!

You’re right Kevin. Vitor by KO or Lindland by boring ass decision. Let’s hope for option #1.

Vitor CAN do it, but the question is will the right Vitor show up that night. He has all the physical tools in the world, but his mental game has always been questioned.
by belfort_fan on Dec 2, 2008 2:10 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
i’ve always been a (frustrated) vitor fan too, but a lot of people get caught up in his inconsistencies and forget that his sister was kidnapped and murdered. it’s kind of cold to not forgive all of his losses based on that alone. I’m stoked for this new lean and mean vitor at 185.
by ActionJackson on Dec 2, 2008 3:25 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If Vitor can walk through Lindland with some authority, I’d say the old Vitor is back. The sister thing really sucks, but a fight is a fight, and it’s not up to PPV buyers to understand or respect his grieving process….he needs a convincing win over a legit opponent. Lindland is a legit opponent, so let’s see this shit.
by introvert on Dec 2, 2008 3:54 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
yeah a win over lindland will move him up in the mw devision
by roy on Dec 2, 2008 4:16 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If we were to see the old Vitor against Lindland. He would get whooped. Lets hope to see a new Vitor.
by belfort_fan on Dec 2, 2008 4:33 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I guess you are fairly new to the sport, because the “old” Vitor I remember would throw about 45 punches in 15 seconds and knock Lindland’s head head.
by introvert on Dec 2, 2008 4:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
oh. i always assumed PPV buyers were also human beings. my bad. but i guess it’s pretty easy for you to say “a fight is a fight” when you’re neither a fighter nor a victim of such a crime. being insensitive doesn’t make you tough. tough is going out and competing on a professional level in a sport with the highest physical and mental demands when you know your sister is out there somewhere in need of help. as far as i know, they never recovered her body.
by ActionJackson on Dec 2, 2008 4:58 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I didn’t say I don’t give a shit about it…and yes I can relate to certain aspects of what he is/was going through form personal experiences. Not exactly like his scenario, but similarities nevertheless. All I’m saying is that if someone were to buy a PPV for the first time, saw a lacklustre Vitor fight…do you think they would buy another one?…even if they knew his story?…I think not. We are MMA fans and know his story, and as sad and disheartening as it may be…..if he wants someone to buy the PPV, so he can make a another payday…he needs to perform. In a world where people will trample a Walmart employee to death, so they can save $2.99 on some toilet paper, do I really need to explain this to you?
by introvert on Dec 2, 2008 5:10 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
you don’t have to explain yourself introvert. If something is affecting you, don’t fight/compete/work. I’m not a compassionate or empathetic person, I guess it could be considered one of my down falls, but it’s life! we all have problems!
by kevin on Dec 2, 2008 5:25 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
of course a first time PPV buyer isn’t going to know anything about the fighters… how is that same thing as you saying he needs to suck it up and fight, which is in so many words, what you said? as for kevin, what would you want him to do? just give up? what if it was your wife?
by ActionJackson on Dec 2, 2008 6:51 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I’d grieve, and get back to work (after collecting the life insurance). Life goes on man!

i’m pretty sure that makes you a sociopath.
by ActionJackson on Dec 2, 2008 7:55 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
When did I say “suck it up”?
WTF is wrong with you people?
I didn’t say suck it up…I didn’t trample a guy at Walmart…I feel for Vitor.
My point is that the general population (not us avid fans) don’t know his sitch, or care about his sitch enough to pay him money to watch him fight in lacklustre fights….it’s just how it is.
He needs to win.
by introvert on Dec 3, 2008 11:15 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Why is Affliction paying Lindland to fight?? People recognize his name but no one likes watching him fight. He put on one of the biggest snoozers at the last affliction event so why bring him back?? He looked fat and old!
by stevo on Dec 2, 2008 12:13 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
It’s the rankings… he’s still in the top 10, until a couple people put the beat down on him he’ll be back again and again.
by O damn he got caught on Dec 2, 2008 12:18 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Matt Lindland has done NOTHING to deserve ANY ranking he’s ever been given. I don’t know why the writers at Sherdog were riding his nuts for years, because Lindland has always been a mid-carder. Never beaten anyone good.
He’s boring, his Team Quest started to suck ass as soon as Couture left, and he’s an inbred hillbilly who may in fact be the only man uglier than Sean Salmon.
It’s sad to say that Vitor Belfort is a bigger joke than Lindland though. To say that this match is a waste of money and time is the understatement of the year.
by Graham on Dec 2, 2008 12:24 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
as boring as he is he wins so he is a top 10 guy and has beaten alot of good fighters almeida, miletich, horn, newton, baroni, lutter, doerksen, van arsdale. and when he was in the ufc he constantly called out the champs and out of the ufc he has looked for the best fighters to fight.
by roy on Dec 2, 2008 12:53 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, if fedor is #1 then Lindland can be top 10. neither of them fight often. WAR VITOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thats right o dam, and he deserves to fight till some can beat his ass out of the top 10
by roy on Dec 2, 2008 12:28 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t see too many fighters outside of the UFC that are gonna give Lindland a good beating. Maybe if Sobral would move down to MW or Lindland moved up to LHW so they could fight. Not really a fan of either but at least Babalu tries to put on a good show. I’ll be pulling for Belfort, I like Vitor and been hoping he puts it all together and climbs the ladder again. Either way, at 38 yrs old, we can only hope Lindland retires soon.

Don’t say dumb shit and comments won’t get trapped in moderation. More than 75 percent of your comments end pointlessly with some jab at the site, a fighter, another reader or a wildly off topic subject, which in turn causes them to be flagged. The last thing we want to see 25 times a day is “comments mania!” It gets old for us, too, Kevin. It’s your own doing, but can be fixed if done right consistently.

Wasn’t designed to call out Kevin. I appreciate his participation to the site, as well as everyone else. But we hear a lot of complaints about moderation and Kevin is the unofficial ring leader. Moderation is the worst possible aspect of this entire operation. The worst — not the long hours, little compensation or next to zero time off. It’s moderation. And the only thing worse than moderation is hearing people complain about it. It’s a necessary evil and we apologize to those who often gt irritated with the process. But I guarantee it irritates us more. Long story short: Keep it clean, respectful and relatively on topic and it should minimize the amount of comments we have to moderate.
by MMAmania on Dec 2, 2008 1:04 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
if you say so! I see that I’m not the only one that says things about the moderation, and I’m curious, how can something non vulgar be flagged? Your computer can tell if I’m talking off topic with someone else? I need that program so I don’t get spam! Anyways, I’m very conscious not to swear, I realize that gets me flagged, but I call B.S. on the off topic stuff getting flagged, I just haven’t heard of a computer program that does that! As far as taking jabs at other maniacs, I haven’t done that in a long time (unless first provoked). Sorry if some of us have developed relationships, and use this forum to communicate. As far as jabs on your site, I believe I’ve said hundreds of times that this is my favorite site, and what a great job you do, my only complaint is the moderation for no reason…and even with that, I’ve endlessly defended you when other guys complain about it. You are still harboring a grudge of the old Kevin, I’ve been behaving very good and respectful for 6 months now, and consciously doing so! I love the site mania, enjoy 90% of the guys on here and feel like I add a nice mix to your conversations! thanks for having such a wonderful place to come and talk mma!

agreed mania, but the “unofficial; ringleader” has been defending your moderation for the last couple weeks! it happens at the same times, and I assume it’s “family time” for you. I accept the apology, but it was unnecessary, I bring it upon myself sometimes! I do appreciate it though, I enjoy the site as much or more than you enjoy my/our participation!
can we all hug it out now!!?? lol!

mania, I accept your apology, but it wasn’t necessary! sometimes my comments are uncalled for, but usually I’m provoked! It’s your site, and you can run it any way you see fit! I appreciate the fact that you like my participation on YOUR site!
keep it up!

actually….as a long time MMAJunkie poster converted to MMAMANIA…the moderation on this site doesn’t compare to the nazi’s at Junkie. Also…the personal attacks on posters, fighters, etc was way out of hand over there causing me to switch but here its not bad at all…the little jabs at one another actually make it more entertaining and make the MMA discussions more enjoyable:)

I agree, we all like to have fun with one another. that ozzy guy ripped my wife the other day, mania let it on and then bitches at me, even though I didn’t even say anything bad in my response! I think mania is sick of all of us constantly bitching about the moderation, thats all. I just think that we’re all adults, most have grown to like and respect one another, and the negative comments still make it up, so why bother moderating? either way, I get it, and only complain when comments (like my comment in the bj penn thread above this one) are well thought out, have no vulgarity, and still are held in moderation for an hour!

I can not change that! Dont like it, let me know and I wont post any longer….Moderating is cool, I understand it, but I will be DAMNED if I let someone Censor me or tell me what I can or cant discuss. Now that Lindland has failed in the political arena he can focus again on fighting. This fight will end in on of two way … boring top control from Lindland, or Belfort will knock his ass out.
For the sake of the sport, Affliction and every fan out there, I hope we see Vitor of old, delivering a flurry of punches into the head of Lindland and sending his ass through the ropes. UFC needs Vitor back at 185 … that would be awesome to see Vitor v Marquardt.
Vitor: KO Rd 1.

McArthur – KO Lindland Rd 1. Although, I feel if the fight gets out of the first or at worst second round Lindland would win. I just have a feeling that Vitor will come in as a monster to prove a point he is still a contender.
