WEC predictions and preview for 'Torres vs Tapia'

WEC 37: "Torres vs. Tapia" takes place this Wednesday, December 3, at 8 p.m. ET on the Versus network. Once again the promotion heads back to the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, for a great night of mixed martial arts action.

While WEC 37 perhaps lacks the starpower and level of anticipation as last month's WEC 36, this event is still poised to deliver several solid bouts. And it has plenty of potential with the talent involved to be an even more entertaining event than its predecessor.

It also represents our first real glimpse into WEC 2.0 with no bouts on the televised card featuring fighters above the featherweight division weight limit. Indeed, after this event we will see more of the same as the promotion dissolves its middleweight and light heavyweight classes.

Outside of former featherweight champion, company 135-pound title holder and top 10 pound-for-pound fighter Miguel Torres is the crown jewel of the company. He will put his belt on the line in the main event against Manny Tapia, which is a clash that will more than likely be an all-out barn burner.

To help get you ready for the event we've taken a closer look at each of the main card bouts and looked into our crystal ball to provide some predictions. Check them out after the jump and provide your own thoughts on WEC 37 in the comments section below.

Star-divide

WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Torres vs. Manny Tapia

Tapia is known as a ground technician, but lately has shown some power in his hands as well. He'll need to come into this fight willing to mix it up both on his feet and on the mat, because as we all know by now Torres can beat you a number of different ways.

If Tapia shows a weakness in any area, Torres will not hesitate to capitalize on it.

Miguel has certainly earned his spot among the best pound for pound fighters on the planet, and is as well rounded a mixed martial artist as you're going to find anywhere in the world. He has thirty five career fights with only one loss, but claims his real record should stand at an even more impressive (46-1).

Either way, he's clearly at the top of the food chain when it comes to 135 pound fighters. Tapia is dangerous and certainly has a chance to pull off the upset, but as stated above, Torres can beat you in so many different ways.

Once Tapia realizes he wants no part of standing with Torres, he'll more than likely look to take the fight to the mat. The only problem there, is that Torres is going to be longer, quicker, and better than anybody Tapia has had on the ground before.

It's a pick your poison for Tapia in this fight: Stand up and get knocked out or take it to the mat and get choked out.

With the recent upset of fellow company superstar Urijah Faber last month, Torres will be on his toes even more looking to avoid a similar fate. Therefore, look for the champ to retain his gold and continue to reign atop the WEC 135-pound division.

Prediction: Miguel Torres via technical knockout in round two.

Brian Bowles (6-0) vs. Will Ribeiro (10-1)

Ribeiro is coming off a hard fought split decision win over former bantamweight champion Chase Beebe at WEC 34 in June. The competition doesn't get easier with this fight as he faces one of the top prospects in the division in Brian Bowles.

Bowles on the other hand has steamrolled through three very tough opponents under the WEC banner. He's stopped Charlie Valencia, Marcos Galvao and Damacio Page by second round rear naked choke, second round knockout and first round guillotine, respectively.

In short, this bout is pretty much unofficially considered a number one contender eliminator match for the right to face the winner of Torres and Tapia somewhere down the road.

Bowles has shown no reason for anyone to believe he's going to lose this fight. He's strong, has a solid chin, and is always looking to finish fights.

Ribeiro will certainly pose a threat with his knockout power and ground skills, but Bowles is a very talented, hungry fighter, who has faced stiffer competition. He appears destined to face Miguel Torres sometime in early 2009.

We look for Bowles to control the pace of the fight and wear the Brazilian down in the early going. Once he's able to take a dominate position, his killer instinct will kick in, and he'll choke Ribeiro out.

Prediction: Brian Bowles via submission (rear naked choke) in the second round.

Akitoshi Tamura (12-6-2) vs. Wagnney Fabiano (10-1)

Fabiano was the International Fight League (IFL) featherweight champion when the organization went under earlier this year. He posted an undefeated record of (6-0) during his time there, and will be making his WEC debut on Wednesday night.

Tamura is making his promotional debut as well. He's a veteran of the Japanese circuit and has recent wins over Takeshi Inoue, Tenkei Fujimiya and Rumina Sato.

He's won most of his fights by decision, so we know he'll probably be looking to take his time with Fabiano. If that's the case, we could see a long drawn out three round decision between these two.

Fabiano prefers his opponents to come at him so he can capitalize on their mistakes and get early stoppages. Tamura will be too smart to fall into an early trap, but Fabiano's talent should prevail eventually in this fight. Look for this one to go the distance, but Fabiano should be the clear cut winner.

Prediction: Wagnney Fabiano via unanimous decision.

Joseph Benavidez (9-0) vs. Danny Martinez (12-2)

Benavidez was very impressive in his win in Japan at DREAM 5 this summer. He defeated Junya Kudo in the first round of their fight. Afterwards his training partner Urijah Faber raved about his work ethic and talent, claiming he had a bright future in the 135-pound division.

His first WEC fight won't be an easy one though. Martinez is an extremely tough fighter who isn't afraid to bang and also has finishing ability on the ground.

He'll come into this fight with some confidence and a whole lot of adrenaline with this being his first fight on a big stage, but in the end Benavidez will just be too athletic, too strong and too talented.

We look for Benavidez to win this fight, and in the future be a real contender in this weight class.

Prediction: Joseph Benavidez via submission (rear naked choke) in round one.

That’s a wrap.

Remember that MMAmania will provide live coverage of WEC 37 on Wednesday night ... so check in early and often. The event airs live on the Versus network beginning at 8 p.m. ET.

Good analysis, I agree with your predictions. I can’t wait for the Torres-Tapia fight, Torres is one of my favorite fighters to watch in all of mma. His mix of sick muay thai and slick submissions give him the ability to finish fights from any position. I think it’s more likely he’ll win by submission than by TKO, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

I got Torres, Fabianno, Ribeiro and Benavidez. On the undercard Diego looks to be a good prospect out of team minotauro. Got high hopes for him- quick hands like dos santos.

I know right? They should have shown an episode last week instead of having two new episodes (possibly having all 4 semifinal fights, I don’t know, does anyone) the same night as the WEC event.

As for this event…… I SMELL UPSETS! Which would be quite a surprise because outside of Urijah losing last event, there really aren’t too many upsets in the WEC – typically the better fighter on paper wins the fight. However, I have a strange feeling about this event – someone is in for a surprise.

And how about them undercard fights!!!! This card is STACKED and hopefully Tamura doesn’t put the crowd to sleep and we get to see a little bit of up and coming Mark Munoz or Johny Hendricks fight, heck, even Cub Swanson is on the undercard (not a Cub fan). But the two undercard fights that I want to see most would have to be Shane Roller/Mike Budnick and Bart Palaszewski/Alex Karalexis.

Dude, when has Torres KOd someone. Tapia has twice the power Torres does, but he doesn’t have as much technique. Tapia wins on the feet, Torres on the ground.

the analysis is dead on, but i believe torres will win by ko.

And Lol @ calling this an analyis. You basically went with the favorite in every fight and said they are better at everything.

Can I have your job? I could do this in like half n hour after I get home from work

I’ve got Fabiano, Torres, and Riberio. But IMO, the titlefight is a tossup

Give the guy a break. At least he is not stuck covering Elite XC anymore like some scrub intern.

Looks like it will be a solid night of fights. I always get excited about WEC shows. I really believe the lighter weight classes in mma are more exciting and more skilled. The main event is a fight I’ve been waiting for since I saw them both make their debuts in the WEC. I’ve been a fan of Tapia since he was fighting in the KOTC. This guy has shown a lot of potential and he always puts on a great show. But that being said, I can’t see him beating Torres, who is one of the most impressive fighters I’ve seen in a long time. I’m also looking to see Bowles win impressively and get his shot at the belt.

Tried to re-comment on the Ali thread, but kept getting “error 404 not found.” Is it just me?

At first glance to the casual eye, the event doesn’t look that great. HOWEVER, if you are into the young up and comers in the sport, DO NOT MISS THIS EVENT, and do what you can to watch some of the prelims.

Brian Bowles vs. Will Ribeiro is almost definitely a #1 contender match. Expect to see the winner of this fight take on the winner of the main event early next year.

Wagnney Fabiano vs. Akitoshi Tamura – For those of you that do not know if Wagnney is, its time to learn about him!!! This kid is for real, and you’ll hear me say that a few times throughout this post, but I’m being for real when I say that they are for real. Really! Wagnney is known for his brilliant BJJ but his last win came by a brutal KO. I would expect the winner of this fight to fight Urijah Faber in a #1 contender fight asuming that Garcia gets first crack at Brown and not an instant rematch for Faber.

Joseph Benavidez vs. Danny Martinez – I don’t know much about Martinez, but Joseph Benavidez is for real!!! He trains with Urijah Faber and he is his protege, his TOP student. I expect BIG things for Benavidez in 2009. I would think that being good buds with Urijah sure can’t hurt when it comes to pulling strings in the WEC.

Johnny Hendricks is a Team TakeDown fighter (Jake Rosholt, Shane Rollins). He has quite a personality as shown in the TapOut show. Being from Team TakeDown, you KNOW he can take the fight to the ground with his solid wrestling base. BUT, Johnny has REALLY been working his hands and wants nothing more than a KO, not a TKO, but a KO. Look for him to keep it standing as long as he is getting the better of it. But as soon as he catches a big punch/kick, he’ll put his opponent on his back.

Mark Munoz – Look for him to be welcomed into the UFC with open arms with a win over this nobody.
Blas Avena vs. Kevin Knabjian – Blas, the casino employee that always makes it onto the card. He is a good mid-tier WEC fighter that will never get a title shot. Knabjian, don’t know of…

Bart Palaszewski vs. Alex Karalexis – THIS is actually a fight that is worhty of being on a UFC Fight Night preliminary card. Both of these fighters made a name for themselves. Through IFL and TUF 1 respectively. As long as this fight stays standing, which it should, it potentially has Fight of the Night written all over it. SlugFest! I HOPE this one gets televised!
Hiroyuki Takaya vs. Cub Swanson – Is this REALLY a Cub Swanson sighting??? He fell off the face of the earth after getting choked out by Jens Pulver. A lot of talent, but possibly a bit too cocky for his own good. They are trying to give him a rebound win here.

Shane Roller vs. Mike Budnik is the prelim fight that I want to see just as badly, if not more so than Bart/Alex. Shane Roller is also from Team TakeDown. Mike Budnik you may not have heard of. BUT, I bet you heard of his cousins. Dan and Jim Miller. Both of these fighters have a lot of power for the 155 division. The winner of this fight will quickly find himself being televised next time.
