UFC 'Primetime' to preview St. Pierre vs Penn 2 starting January 14

The UFC has announced a new three-part series titled 'Primetime' featuring and in-depth look at the colossal UFC 94 welterweight title fight between current champion Georges St. Pierre and former welterweight and current lightweight champion BJ Penn.

The debut episode will air on January 14 at 10:30 pm ET on SpikeTV and episodes two and three will air on January 21 and 28, respectively.

Penn and St. Pierre have already met inside the Octagon at UFC 58: "USA vs. Canada" in 2006, which resulted in a controversial split decision win for St. Pierre. 'The Prodigy' brutalized St. Pierre for much of the first round, but 'Rush' was able to storm back and hang on in the final two frames to get the winning nod.

Most at the time felt at the very least it should have been a draw because of the lopsided opening stanza; however, the judges ringside did not agree. Regardless, it was a great fight and the encore will likely be even better since both fighters have improved significantly over time.

And that’s a scary thing to say – these are two of the most gifted pound-for-pound talents in the sport going up against one another in the prime of their careers. Its historical significance cannot be overstated.

UFC 94 'St. Pierre vs. Penn 2' takes place January 31 live on pay-per-view at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada and also features the highly anticipated showdown between light heavyweight unbeatens Lyoto Machida and Thiago Silva.

man i can’t wait for this fight.. this fight is way better and will get WAY more PPV’s then Lesnar/Couture, the fight will at least go 3 rds or more..

by mikeybear on Dec 1, 2008 1:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree. I don’t really care who wins this fight, I just want it to be a great fight. That being said, I think GSP will stop B.J. if it goes as far as the 3rd or more. For some reason I just don’t see B.J. being able to finish GSP, and I really don’t see him winning a decision.

Anyone see BJ at the end of the Joe Daddy fight. Talk about gassed. When GSP puts pressure on him, he will wilt. Rd3 stoppage.

by NameNotRequired on Dec 1, 2008 3:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Im not even worried about this fight. Very confident that BJ will win.

Anyone know what the odds are opening at?

by john on Dec 1, 2008 4:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Even i wouldnt be “not worried” my friend! Thats just all out crazy, very Pennish if you will. Im worried, they are the only 2 fighters under 170 that can even hold a candle to one another. Worried about the random, worried about Penn doing everything he can to be ready, worried that if BJ was ever gonna let me down again inside that cage it will be against a machine like Georges St-Pierre, the guy won 12 minutes against BJ after he was diced up, im confident that BJ can win but worried that somehow he wont. BJ BJ BJ!!!

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Dec 1, 2008 4:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

And that was an act at the end of the Joe fight LoL, i guess Sean Sherk wasnt the only one that baught into it! Well done BJ, no wonder he is doing some acting huh LMAO!!! BJ BJ BJ!!! After beating GSP he’ll act all tired again watch, just incase Kenny is paying attention LoL And he will be.

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Dec 1, 2008 4:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I sniff BJ’s sack as much as anyone here but GSP will win this one in a straight up war.

i like it, i’ve been hoping for them to do something like this for a while now

Sounds pretty good.

Holland is an idiot: “The Prodigy brutalized St.Pierre for much of the first round”… Please, he had a bloody nose and a was bleeding from the eye because he had it gouged by Penn. If he was really that beaten up, he never would have even made it back out for the second, much less go on to win the fight. A fighter getting brutalized is what Silva did to Franklin, or what GSP did to Fitch, not what Penn did here.

by prophet on Dec 1, 2008 1:43 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn’t say he was brutalized, but he was picked apart. He didn’t do any significant damage (Other than the gouge) that would have warranted a 10-8 round.

Also, on another note…Wouldn’t it be funny if it was a flash KO in the first round after all the hype? Haha. I hope that it doesn’t end that way, but it’s an interesting thought.

by Shadyone33 on Dec 1, 2008 2:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

how bout a no contest due to groin strikes

by brendan on Dec 1, 2008 6:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

it wasnt a 10-8 round. That’s the point!

Both exchange 1 for 1 for the first 5 minutes, the blood makes the difference…

It’s crazy how BJ can do less and have big result in the perspective of their fans.

by Jee on Dec 1, 2008 7:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

gsp spent the night in the hospital after their first fight. bj probably spent the night in your mom that night.

by jonsey on Dec 1, 2008 7:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Wow, that was kinda uncalled for. Besides, B.J. spent the night in the hospital after he fought Hughes. If he ever fights Anderson Silva, B.J. will spend all of his nights in a graveyard.

by naturalshadow on Dec 1, 2008 10:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

excuse me for offending you sir. i was merely trying to prove a point to shadyone33 that gsp had suffered damage after the first fight. the last sentance was born out of boredom and not an accurate representation of myself and i apologize for it’s crassness.

by jonsey on Dec 1, 2008 10:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

haha. Good response.

by naturalshadow on Dec 2, 2008 2:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, GSP explained that at the press conference in T.O. He went to the hospital to get his eye checked out after the strike to the eye. If I were to be in the hospital after a fight I’d rather be there as a precaution on an eye injury than having my rib crush under layers of fat and lard…No hard feelings about the mom comment, I was 12 once too ya know?

can you say 1 million ppv’s?

i would think if any event could get there it would this one.

by roy on Dec 1, 2008 2:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree, but the UFC can’t market it as the biggest fight in UFC history, considering they just called the last UFC main event the biggest fight in UFC history.

by naturalshadow on Dec 1, 2008 10:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah seems like every month it’s “The Biggest Fight” or “Most Anticipated Fight” in ufc history. I kind of get tired of all the hype, let em step in the cage and fight. GO GSP!!

b.w told me about this a long time ago. I am just glad to see it is actually happening. This sh*t is going to get me even more pumped for this fight, if that is possible…

a lot of promos for this already…wtf??? Page/Wand, Evans/Forrest, Mir/NOG, Hendo/Franklin are all fights I personaaly want to see just as much as this one but all the attention seems to be going the other way

by McArthur on Dec 1, 2008 1:50 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

these are all great fights in their own right, but this fight will actually be the biggest mma fight ever imo, unlike that other 1, wich still wasnt bad. i think gsp/penn 2 could be the biggest mma fight of our era to both hardcore and casual fans. i cant think of any fight id rather see more right now.

by b.w. on Dec 1, 2008 2:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

My thoughts exactly!

by BNF on Dec 1, 2008 2:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i would almost rather see GSP vs Silva, but that is gonna happen after he beats penn, its gonna be a great year for superfights

Just like the HBO 24/7 for boxing! I love those shows, im glad UFC is copying thier format!!! I thought they were supposed to debut this with Couture and Lesnar.

Great fight, great card….still think GSP takes it but I want BJ to win……has BJ beaten anybody else at 170 besides Hughes?

by Robert on Dec 1, 2008 3:25 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

He defeated Duane Lugwig in 04’ in K-1. Nothing too big. BJ is no joke though. I see him coming out on top.

by masters on Dec 1, 2008 4:32 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

With a choke in just seconds, sh*t “Bang” was mounted before the bell rang i think LMAO! BJ BJ BJ!!!

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Dec 1, 2008 4:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

And the choke was from the mount, on top.

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Dec 1, 2008 7:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

wasnt it a darce from side controll?

by jonsey on Dec 1, 2008 7:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m almost positive it was just an arm triangle. I think he just locked his hands together(as opposed to grabbing his own bicep and putting the other hand at his ear) so it might have looked like a darce from that angle.

by The Anomaly on Dec 1, 2008 7:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

no i just watched it. he secured the choke while mounted and as soon as he locked it down he keylocked him from side controll.

by jonsey on Dec 1, 2008 8:37 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

haha are you joking? Hell no it wasnt no Keylock, I watched it again cuz you made me second guess myself, its a good ol arm triangle.

Thanks

Hes also beaten Renzo Gracie at 185, Rodrigo Gracie at 185 (and Rodrigo was undefeated), Lost to Lyotto Machida at HVWT. Serra is a 170er now, and Sherk was a 170er for most of his career. Kenny (if they fight) was fighting at like 185 for TUF i think. BJ fights ’em all baby, any weight, any org, any time, any P4P ranking! BJ BJ BJ!!!

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Dec 1, 2008 7:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Im stoked, if BJ can beat Georges and then Kenny, his last couple fights will read, Pulver W, Stevenson W (plus belt), Sherk W (defends belt to #1 contender), GSP W (plus 2nd belt), Kenny W (making it 5-0 since his rebirth and 2 belts as well) His resume will be booming sooner than later.

If anyone runs into extra tickets (2 of them) let me know on this post. Id preffer mid level. Depending on the location we can work out a price.

by paul@protecdvs.com on Dec 1, 2008 7:42 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

John and ((adam g)) you seem so confident penns wins, why? It’s foolish to be so over confident and vocal in your favorite fighter because if he loses, and odds wise he more likely will you’ll look stupid. Everyone and there dog thought gsp would kill serra in the first round, and everyone was extremely vocal about it, and it went the other way around, odds makers thought so lightly of serra not even a top 10 welter weight coming off a controversial win over another sub top 10 fighter. Gsp was coming off the biggest win of his career destroying hughes the most dominant welter weight of all time.
Gsp completely owned fitch the toughest welter weight out there for 5 rounds and not by some quick flash ko. Fitch I feel who would pretty much smash anyone penn has faced other than gsp and machida. I don’t get your guys logic, I tend to look at things analytically, ya penn might win but the odds don’t favor him. I’ll guarantee this at least the odds makers will favor gsp I’m guessing around -200 or so, I think if gsp brings his A game, Penn brings his A game it should be a good competitive fight with gsp winning a decision but this is MMA and anything could happen, gsp could ko penn or submit him or vice versa don’t say it can’t happen just because it hasn’t or is unlikely or hasn’t in the past. Serra has one t(ko) in his career to one of the most technical strikers in the division, its possible for gsp to submit penn this is MMA not a bjj contest. May the best man win which I think will be gsp and I’ll be rooting for him.

Read my post at the top that starts "Even i wouldnt be “not worried” . . . I explain why as a Penn fan i AM worried and not calling anything a sure thing. (Read my posts and then you read your own and tell me who is more bias?) (you claim to be “just wanting a good fight” but its vlear that you are a George fan, so what makes you so sure GSP will win?) But what should i be saying, “BJs good, Georege is good, a fight will be good” is that monotone enough for you???

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Dec 1, 2008 8:58 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

  • “vlear” = “very clear” LoL.

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Dec 1, 2008 8:59 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yes I did read your post and I probably shouldn’t have mentioned your name, john was the one you were responding to. I’m not sure gsp will win ya I’m biased and I even say so but can pretty much guarantee the odds makers will favor gsp in this fight thats it, root for who you want to I’ll be rooting for gsp.
I’m predicting gsp will be the favorite around -200 I’m calling it now, if I’m wrong give me shit. As we all know favorites mean squat lets just agree to disagree we both have confidence in our favorites but know they could lose, I get butterfly’s in my gut every time gsp fights because I know he’s not invincible and he’s my favorite fighter.

Word! BJ has let me down many times but im still here for him. Anything can happen but if it doesnt then i see BJ winning (in many ways) George is amazing but before there was a GSP there was BJ Penn and the first fight left me sour at George and BJ, BJ f’n blew it!!! In thatfirst fight, just blew it. Then the hughes fiasco! But imagine how stoked i am now, hes back and even you have to admit (wether its enough to beat George or not) hes better than ever. I cant believe it as a long time fan, waited forever to see this kid fight the best at his best and since he has the nuts of a warrior we are going to get to see that since he calls out anyone without a cape on and an S on their chest. BJ BJ BJ!!!

How long will they feel each other out for? Who will land the first strike? Who scores the first knockdown? What ridiculous spiel with Goldberg give just before the fight gets underway? I have that unexplainable excitement, like we used to feel before xmas when we were kids. Time can’t pass quick enough. GSP by spinning, jumping, van-dam kick in the first 11 seconds.
