It's kill or be killed for Thiago Silva against Lyoto Machida at UFC 94

Props: Tatame.com
Quoteworthy:
"I bet on me [to defeat Lyoto Machida], of course (laughs). I’m well trained and I’m ready. If the fight was in one week I’d already be ready. It’s an important fight for me, I’m in the moving on and I’m going [to UFC 94] to kill or die."
Undefeated Chute Boxe-trained mixed martial artist Thiago Silva talks about the importance of his upcoming fight against fellow Brazilian Lyoto Machida at UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2" at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on January 31. It was a highly anticipated 205-pound bout that was originally scheduled for UFC 89: "Bisping vs. Leben" on October 18; however, Silva had to withdraw from the contest because of a back injury sustained during training. He's apparently all healed ready to rock as soon as next week ... to bad we will have to wait until Super Bowl weekend.

Thiago will take him down and sub him. If Ortiz can surprise you with a triangle then Silva will run all kinds of submission trains on you. I hope Thiago makes his presence felt.

Machida looked very tired in that fight also so i hope Thiago makes it a physical fight cause he is clearly the stronger guy. I’m looking for some brutal GnP to finally put an end to this horrible track and field star..

Go Machida! I am betting on Machida all the way.

Tough fight to call. But I’m going with Machida, simply b/c it will look ridiculous if he isn’t given a title shot after this. I actually enjoy watching him fight. But i wish his style wasn’t catching on (Bisping). It is one thing to avoid and counterstrike, it is entirely another to runaway and peck with a jab that does no damage. hehehe, sorry guys, had to throw that in there.
by chefdaddy on Nov 29, 2008 11:48 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
no your 100% right.. machida style is sick to watch- little boring at times, but their is nothing boring about winning all the time. i pick him for UD, but i think he might have hsi hands full cuz thiago is very aggressive. and i still don’t believe Machida will get a title shot after this, Dana white doesn’t want him as a champ he’s not marketable enough, so i really doubt he will get a shot.. if jardine didn’t get a title shot after beating chuck loyoto won’t get one either if he beats silva…
by ricky on Nov 29, 2008 11:52 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That’s kind of why I want him to win! It will be harder and harder, and Dana will look worse and worse if he keeps winning and doesn’t get the shot.

I dunno who to pick in this one. I am a huge fan of both fighters. To me this is a mega fight, up there with BJ Penn vs. GSP. I hjave been wanting to see this fight for a while now…..Its going to be amazing!

john, talk about a battle of two contrasting styles!!
by chefdaddy on Nov 29, 2008 12:55 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Chef: thats exactly what makes this an amazing fight! Silva is the perfect opponent to make a Machida fight “exciting” for all the idiots who complain that he is boring. I dont know who to root for because I am a huge fan of both but I know that I will be betting the underdog for sure, whoever that is.
During the stand up Silva is just Nasty, mean and tough. Tomas Drawl hits hard and he blasted Silva a few times, and like a terminator, Silva just pushed forward. He is as tough as it gets and very skilled!
AS much as I like the stand up, I kind of want this fight to go to the ground. 2 jits black belts with contrasting ground styles. Machida looks for submissions while Silva uses a his jits to get in good positions to mount and then ground n pound away!
The thought of this fight makes me DROOL!!!!
Like Brac pointed out, it would be GREAT if this were a 5 rounder. Hopefully one day, one of these fighters will have the title and we get to see a 5 round rematch of this fight, because I have a feeling that its going to be epic, and 3 rounds just wont do it any justice.
by john on Nov 29, 2008 3:47 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think this fight will happen on the ground because Silva needs to realize that he’s at a technical disadvantage in the standup (hell, he lunges his body forward when he jabs). Also Silva has a sick top game and gnp. He generates a ridiculous amount of power from mount. Machida will probly win but am rooting for Silva.

I think Machida will win and make it look easy. I’m not expecting an epic back and forth brawl. I think Machida is going to walk a way with a decision.

I dont know why people hate on Machida. I dont find him boring at all and IMO he is probably the best in the division.
by stevo on Nov 29, 2008 9:10 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
my question to you then stevo do you think it’s good for the sport to have an ultradefensive stick and mover winning all the time? it will just make guys take after that style and there will be max 5 punches per fight.. Josh Koscheck had it against Diego and i hated him, these days i like him as hell when he’s going after guys!
by RoB on Nov 29, 2008 11:36 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
You do not just pick up that ultra defensive style. Machida has a straight up karate style of striking rather then the normal Thai Boxing, kick Boxing, or Western Boxing style that most people use in mma. The only other guy I have seen make it work on occasion is Stephan Bonner. A lot of Machida’s game is based on the counter and how many fighters are good at stepping back and throwing with power? Chuck is all I can think of. I think this fight is perfect for machida. Thiago will come out guns a blazing and will set up Machiad for the KO….
by Da Monkey on Nov 30, 2008 10:06 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I like silva in this one. I hope he comes out very aggressive, but that could open him up to machida’s striking! It should be a great fight!

wow, I’m literally laughing right now! I haven’t owned my own business in years, and evry regular (that I give a shit about) knows where I work! Bisping fought smart against Leban, to stand up and trade with him would have been foolish. The same with Kenny against Stevenson, Kenny knows that Stevenson is te more powerful striker and also an excellent wrestler. He waited for his opponent to make he mistake and then went for the kill. Nothing wrong with that, I do not understand the criticism when a fighter has a gamplan and fights smart, but the lay into Leban and Gurgel for not having any gameplan or fighting smart. I do not mind Machida at all and do not find him boring. It is down to his opponent to try and change the the pace and style of the fight if he or fans do not like it, but they obviously dot have what it takes to be able to do it. I like both guys, it should be very interesting fight.

Tony, you just summed up why the whole reason why I think you are a douche extraordinaire. Leben was one of my favorites. But he used steroids. That is cheating. two points you made, and I agree with. As a result, I am no longer a fan of Leben’s. But you had to throw in “American” in a deragatory way. And you’ve done this multiple times. I hold your country in nothing but high regard, and am actually a bit of an Anglophile. You simply, and continually show yourself to have 0 class.

Have to go with Machida. In my mind he is the clear favourite. If he wins and doesn’t get a title shot it looks bad on the UFC’s part. It would make the whole thing look less like a sport and more like a business. Yes, I do realise it is a business too but c’mon it would be ridiculous to not give Machida a shot if he won. It would be a complete farce.

someone needs to literally run ninja style out of the gate and catch machida off guard in order to win. someone with a great chin and tons of non stop pressure offence with no concern for defence. thats the gameplan silva needs.
by jonsey on Nov 29, 2008 1:17 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Sounds like the good old Wanderlei gameplan. Maybe Thiago can take a leave out of his namesake’s book.
I still see Machida winning though. For me he is number 1 in the division.
by RobH86 on Nov 29, 2008 6:59 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Even if machida beats thiago I dont think he should get a title shot, who has he beat soku hes out of the ufc, tito not that great and out of the ufc too and thiago is good but still I think he needs a win over a bigger name first to grant him a title shot, maybe if he beats the winner of rampage vs wandy or if shogun is impressive over coleman then if he beats shogun then maybe you give him a title shot. Plus for marketability purposes he needs a win over a big name before the title shot
by FJM on Nov 29, 2008 1:19 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Um, Soko was top 10 when they fought, and he was coming off of ko’ing Arona and Minotoro. Tito was coming off a draw (should we say win?)to Rashad and Lyoto worked him. Coupled with the fact Lyoto is undefeated and has beaten quality opponents throughout (Franklin,Penn,Bonnar,White,Naka) it’s absurd he doesn’t get a shot after this bout.
Were you questioning Rashad’s title shot?
by R/p on Nov 29, 2008 1:26 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The UFC has to get a structured system for title contention and title matches. There is no way that Rashad gets a title shot. Draw against Ortiz, then he beats someone who drops down to middle, then he beats someone that has now been beaten 3 out of times. The fighters don’t even know what the hell they are fighting for. Great example is GSP vs. Penn. Penn’s last 2 fights at WW are losses. This is a fight that I really want to see, but I don’t think that he deserves a title shot. There is no defined system, and I think it ruins some fights. We the fans are cheering, but for what? Our favorite fighters fight, and we don’t know what they are fighting for. If this is to be a “sport”, then it shouldn’t just be up to 3 people. Some fighters like Lyoto are not getting what they deserve.
Just a Thought
by raetsinner on Nov 29, 2008 1:43 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I agree with you 100%. Lesner and Mir are other examples. I have just come to accept that it is all about selling tickets and being biased towards fan favourites. It is not about what is fair and who deserves it, it is all about what will pull in the most amount of money. I do not agree with it all but that is what the UFC is all about.

I’m also jumping on the Thiago train, mostly cause i want to see Machida knocked the fuck out. Sure he’s very talented but I don’t like his style at all.
If he proves me wrong and beats Thiago in exciting and convincing fashion, then sure give him a title shot, but if he prances to another decision, then feed him to the winner of Silva vs Rampage
by Reether on Nov 29, 2008 2:53 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I’m picking Machida by TKO. Thiago has been hurt in recent fights, and Antonio Mendes does not kick as well as Machida does. If he can drop Silva, he can try to lay it on thick and get the ref to stop it.
Machida has to want a KO real bad at this point and will be looking for that over a submission or decision.
by Space on Nov 29, 2008 3:22 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Mendes had 7 of 14 career victories by TKO/KO going into that fight, he hasn’t beat any names, but he might just be a better stiker than you’re giving him credit for. I don’t know how much tape Thiago had on him going in, or what type of fight he had prepared for. But there seems to be a need to point out that Thiago got rocked by that kick, what gets left out is that he recovered quickly, and finished the fight at 2:24 in the 1st.
I’m 50/50 on who might win this. If Thiago can get the range and the timing down, he should be to put a hurting on Machida. Machida’s got great technique, but not a lot of power. He dropped Tito with a knee to the liver, but couldn’t finish him. However know one is better at staying out of danger and frustrating opponents as Machida, and Thiago has not had to deal with that yet.
I like both guys, but I am not ready to crown either one the next king of 205 just yet.
by MongoMan on Nov 29, 2008 4:56 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
True, Thiago has recovered quickly from being rocked and come back to win his fights, and Mendes has more KOs than Machida does, but I don’t Mendes is as complete a fighter.

Machida this Machida that… what’s it all about?
He got 5 UFC fights, well he won them all but who did he fought and how good were they at the time he fought them???
Sam Hoger, David Heath, Kazuhiro Nakamura, Sokoudjou, Tito Ortiz (none of these fighters are in the UFC anymore) how good was these fights to be honest?
4 Unanimous Decisions and 1 Submission.
- For example: David Heath, one of the worst fighters of the new era UFC… today Heath is 9-4 and 3 of the 4 losses is from fighting in the UFC and his only decision loss is to Machida, beating Heath via unanimous decision ain’t good, the fight was so boring that Spike TV did not even show it on their brodcast, they showed an undercard fight instead (all other main card fights were broadcasted by Spike TV that night).
I’m not lifting Thiago Silva because he have not done much in the UFC either, but since he’s not as boring I’m asking this.
What is it with Machida and don’t just say skills… skills don’t make you go 3 rounds with David Heath!
So what is it then?
by JonnyBoy on Nov 30, 2008 4:36 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Liddel was scared to fight him and Forrest wanted nothing to do with him. Maybe if some of the bigger names were not doing the running away outsde the octogan, then the list of fighters that he has beaten would look a little more impressive.
by Ade on Nov 30, 2008 9:38 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Ok, thanks… atleast I got an answer and that’s good.
Yes they are maybe running away outside of the Octagon (I don’t know since I’m no fan of his), but Machida is running away in his fights… that is IN the Octagon.
It could be as you say (can’t confirm that and if I could’ve they could still beat him bad).
Maybe, just maybe… his list could’ve looked better with win over more known or better fighters, for sure but if they’d beat him it wouldn’t do no good.
If he would fight any of the two would he still be winning by Decision, yes I say…
And he would’ve still be just as boring.
by JonnyBoy on Nov 30, 2008 2:07 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think that this will be Machida’s biggest test in the UFC. I haven’t been very impressed with his (Machida) fighting style at all and even though he is a great talent his style does not make him marketable. The fight is to close to call! I will have to give a slight edge to Silva but would not want to back it up with anything of substance … like actual money …

I hate watching Machida fight! I will admit that his style has been affective for him thus far. But, I see Thiago sending him a lullaby in the first or second! At least I hope that’s what happens! Because, I believe Lyoto is a real winner! But, he’s not a real CHAMPION! I mean no disrespect to him in any way! But, I like to watch and pay good money to watch, FIGHTS! Lyoto has a place in Martial Arts and on the world stage. But, not in the UFC where we all pay alot of money to see “great fights!” My appologies in advance to Lyoto’s fans! I just call it how I see it!
