UFC Quick Quote: More middleweight confidence Nate Marquardt edition

"[Michael Bisping and Demian Maia] are good fighters. Bisping can go and go, and Maia is good on the ground. But neither one of them has fought anyone who is as good as me or at the same level of fighter that I am. It would be a huge jump in class for them to fight me, and I think I could finish either one of them off in round one or two.... The desire for a rematch with Anderson Silva is obvious, and it’s a great desire of mine. I really feel like I didn’t fight the way I wanted to fight. I just didn’t show up that night. When I was sticking with my game plan, I was winning the fight. I went away from that, and he took advantage of it. The next time we fight, it will be a war and I can’t wait for the opportunity."

-- Yesterday it was Michael Bisping and today it's Nate Marquardt. The former number one middleweight contender talks about what he would do to either Bisping or Demian Maia in a Sherdog.com interview. The former King of Pancrase also lobbies hard to be named the coach opposite "The Count" on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9. If gets his wish he'll certainly be one step closer toward achieving two objectives -- fighting Bisping and rematching Silva.

If Henderson beats Franklin, he should get the next rematch against Silva at Middleweight. Okami should fight marquardt/Maia/or Bisping for the following title shot at Middlewight. Silva doesnt have many fights left.

by horny for mma on Nov 26, 2008 9:47 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Exatly, Andy only has 5 fights left and I hope the UFC doesn’t waste one of them on a rematch with Nate…Im not even sold on a Hendo rematch either…I think Andersons last 5 fights should be at 205..

As for Nate fighting either Bisping or Maia? I disagree with NAte..I think all three of these fighters are at the same level in the MW division and any of the possible matches would be good..Nate would have a better chance with Bisping, and I would prefer that fight over Bisping vs. Maia..
I want to see Maia fight Wil Gouvei..

i agree i think nate is 2 much for bisping atm but not for maia

i think it’d be a good fight imo

i actually think nate would be able 2 take hendo

he never really lost against thales

by ufcaddict on Nov 26, 2008 10:38 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Nate is a top middleweight but I dont think he walks through: Maia, Bisping, THales, Okami, Hendo, Franklin. IMO Nate isn’t above the rest of the pack, he is right in the middle, on par with the above mentioned fighters. He isnt above anyone of them, and I think anyone of those guys could beat Nate although he would be the favorite against most of them.

As for Bisping, I dont think any middleweight, besides the champion, can Dominate the Count. If Bisping was never dominated at 205, he wont be bullied at 185 lbs. NOt saying he is the #1 contender, but he will give any non champion in the middleweight division a real good fight

if okami didn’t break his hand where would this divison be?
okami would of fought silva
marq prob would have fought cote

by mikeybear on Nov 26, 2008 11:01 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Marquardt would clear out the division if Anderson Silva was not in it. Seriously, he is that good and I think he was in ore of the Spider last time.

Nate should get a re-match with Silva and I would put money on him next time.

P.S Does anyone notice that NO ONE CALLS OUT MARQUARDT!

by DownUnder on Nov 26, 2008 1:33 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

@john

I agree exactly. I do like Nate tho. He is a good fighter. I dont see him walking through either of those guys tho.

by enzo-enormous on Nov 26, 2008 3:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

b4 Nate runs his mouth again, he should try beating a top contender (Leites) without using 10 different illegal moves. He had THales rocked from all kinds of illegal knees, but didnt come close to finishing thales. He is a dirty fighter and I dont like him! I understand a mis-timed knee could have been an accidental blow, but you cant tell me he accidentally Pile DRived thales on his Neck…that was messed up!

Props to thales!

I was at that event John. I was like “wtf did he just do.” It seemed intentional and was completely uncalled for.

by COR on Nov 26, 2008 4:37 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, you can’t drop a guy on his head!

by kevin on Nov 26, 2008 4:40 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, dumping an opponent on their head is completely legal. You see it alot when fighters go for arm bars, triangles etc

If you need more proof, you will notice Herb Dean did nothing when this occurred, after giving two penalties earlier.

Pile drivers are good in the UFC…BUt what if accidentally that joint that kinda connects the spinal column to the skull cracks?! Hehe, another death in MMA…

I still think Marquardt has the best chance to beat Silva at 185… I dont think he will, but he has the best chance of anyone right now.

by 1-0 via Arm Triangle on Nov 26, 2008 10:41 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Beating Franklin shouldn’t get him a title shot.

1. The fight is at 205

2. Only 8 months ago Hendo fought for the title. There is no way he gets another one.

by Tha_Pimp_man on Nov 26, 2008 12:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Nate might be right but the way Anderson destroyed him, it will be a hard sell for a rematch

by Robert on Nov 26, 2008 1:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I personally think Marquardt is the best MW other than Anderson and I’d love to see him do the TUF thing against Bisping.

by Scott on Nov 26, 2008 9:58 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Thats a good idea! Marquardt/Bisping as TUF coaches would be good! Nate is right about both Maia and Bisping. Nate is on a higher level!

by JV on Nov 26, 2008 11:53 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It is a good idea, but only because someone has to do it. Marquardt should be fighting Maia or Bisbing at 94 or 95 not in 6 months at the conclusion of TUF. I am over TUF, I still watch, but geeez. I guess at least the next one won’t hold up a title.

by BNF on Nov 26, 2008 12:08 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

UFC 95 is in London. So it should be Marquardt/Bisbing at 95. Lame…

This season of TUF has been ok! The 2 LHW fights are going to be good! All 4 are good fighters! Nover has an easy trip to the finals. And Junie/Efrain should be a good fight! I dont know about this coming season though?

by FukStyck on Nov 26, 2008 10:03 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

i agree keep franklin at 205
and have nate the other coach he will beat bisping up

by bryant on Nov 26, 2008 10:03 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think Nate is too good for either Bisping or Maia at this point. He’s in a shitty spot though…best MW out there, but already blew his title shot. Tough spot to be in. But, if he can string 1 or 2 more wins together, he should get another shot….ala Florian.

by introvert on Nov 26, 2008 10:04 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Nate has a LOT of option out there as far as fights are concerned. I still want to see him fight against either Franklin or Hendo (if they decide to go back to MW).

What I think will happen is Hendo smashes Franklin and then turns down the offer to be coach on TUF 9. That would leave Demian Maia or Nate Marquardt. Seeing that the format of the show as of this moment is still USA vs UK, Marquardt is obviously the logical choice.

I think Nate would lay a beatdown on Bisping and it would look erily similar to the Kampmann fight. However, like someone else said, with Anderson ready to retire next year, a rematch with Nate is not one of the fights I currently want to see him in. He would need to destroy and finish Franklin or Henderson before I would want to see that rematch.

by ViolentMike on Nov 26, 2008 11:00 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You’re such a Hendo homer…my god. He’s not the same fighter he was a few years back. Get that through your head. 2 UFC losses and one of the biggest snooze fest wins I’ve ever seen.

by FukStyck on Nov 26, 2008 11:10 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Two losses to UFC champs in two different weight classes isn’t that bad.

by James S on Nov 26, 2008 11:42 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

True, but according to him, Hendo will roll through anyone. Franklin will be a very good fight, could go either way. And Nate could take either of these guys.

by FukStyck on Nov 26, 2008 3:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think Nate has the potential to beat either Henderson or Franklin. He’s very underrated, and I personally think he’d handle decision dan at this point. Franklin is probably the tougher fight for him stylewise, but I think he could pull that one out as well.

by yohnstoppable on Nov 26, 2008 11:42 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

VM I highly doubt dan would turn down an offer to be the next tuff coach after watching some of video blogs he seems like an attention hog and would love to have his mug on camera for 12 weeks

I cant stand when a fighter says I didnt show up in there or it wasnt me in there refering to his loss to A silva NO it was you in there and not only did you get smashed you got out wrestled by A silva when that was supposedly your strength

Nate is all talk

I cant wait to see him get choked out by maia or decapetated by silva again

by dia mette on Nov 26, 2008 2:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

R u serious? Dont compare Kampmann to Bisping! Every1 rights off Bisping! Hes never been knocked out and hes much bigger than Kampmann so ur comparision makes no sense to me. Bissy has good boxing and kick boxing he would definatly do well against Nate in the stand up. Im not saying he would win, but it would be a much closer fight than most of you on here think! Bissy had good wrestling, bjj (enough to not get submitted) and striking it would be a very good fight between 2 high level all rounders. We all saw how Nate did against Silva, a few solid shots and he folded, not saying Bissy hits as hard but he could defo hurt him. Good fight which i hope happens but i think Bissy had got it right calling out Hendo, thts a better match up for him imo.

by Sparrow on Nov 26, 2008 8:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ummm….Bissy????

by chefdaddy on Nov 26, 2008 11:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

by Sparrow on Nov 27, 2008 6:40 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Good for him to have confidence… he’ll lose against silva but will beat most other MW

by ricky on Nov 26, 2008 10:05 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Nate could beat Bisping.. I think Maia would be a problem for him once it hits the ground.. on a Silva..

Nah.. Nate is Great but not when Silva is coming his way.

by PhilQNY on Nov 26, 2008 10:09 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Not only do I agree with the above, but I have no interest in a Nate/Anderson rematch. Not with Anderson only having 5 fights left.

Nate is the only MW I would want to see Anderson fight NOW. In the future you could include Maia in that statement, but only after he developed a few decent striking skills.

by A Lynch on Nov 26, 2008 10:18 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

thats a rather obsurd comment especially if henderson wins his next fight, the only reason you say that because he had a single ko win over a smaller cage rusty opponent, im sure you realize nate hasnt improved that much since he fought silva. I think what would make sense, would be for marquart to fight denis kang assuming kang wins his next fight convincingly.

by Colin D on Nov 26, 2008 5:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’d love to see Nate vs Bisping. Although I think Nate is the better fighter, I’d like to see Bisping win, just to see how much he keeps improving.

by TheNewfie on Nov 26, 2008 10:44 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think they’d put Bisping in the ring with Marquardt, it would be too dangerous of a fight for Bisping. They have been coddling him….he’s gonna go from jason day and charles mccarthy to one of the top 3 middleweights in the UFC? I guess he needs to earn a title shot so far.

Bisping needs to beat marquardt, franklin or henderson to seriously be considered for a title shot. Anything else and he wouldn’t have earned it. I don’t think he’s proven himself in the middleweight division yet.

I also think Maia would submit him. That is way too risky of a fight with not a lot of upside to it. Beating Maia wouldn’t be that rewarding compared to Nate, Rich or Dan. If he lost to either of those three it wouldn’t look that bad, they are certified badasses. If he lost to Maia everyone would say ‘Oh, he can strike OK but his ground is terrible’ regardless if it really is or not.

by joseph on Nov 26, 2008 11:00 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Nate is an excellent fighter but he has had his shot and lost. There is no need to give him another shot maybe until he has another 4 fight win streak. id rather see silva fight someone who hasnt had a shot yet maybe bisping in the future (if bisping wins a few more fights against top mw) or maia, silva does not have a lot of fights left so i dont really want them wasteed on him beating nate, henderson or franklin again, even though they are top ranked MW we have already seen them get beaten by silva so why again.

by CHRIS on Nov 26, 2008 11:07 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Ok, here’s what I think the UFC should do:

Nate & Bisping coach TUF, fight mid-summer for a title shot, winner fights for MW title in the fall.
Maia should get the Okami/Lister winner in Feb/March. The winner of this fight then gets a title shot against Silva in May/June if only to keep the MW title from being completely stagnant. Besides, Okami probably deserves his shot anyway.
This way Silva can fight 3 blockbuster fights at 205 when he isn’t defending his title.

As a side note, enough of this argument for who’s the 2nd best MW in the world. It’s Rich Franklin, period. Just ask Silva, he’ll say the same thing.

by Jaywalk on Nov 26, 2008 11:11 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

i don’t understand how silva can say rich was a better fighter than dan when it was dan who was the only person under the ufc to win a round against him. i think henderson is one tough sonofabitch and will mop the floor with franklin.

by jonsey on Nov 26, 2008 11:59 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I really think that Nate is the second best MW in the world. Silva is just a really bad match up for him. I think he can beat everyone else at middle weight.
