Josh Barnett vs Brett Rogers Affliction fight rumored for Jan. 24

Another huge heavyweight fight is being discussed and could officially be added to the Affliction: "Day of Reckoning" event, which is slated for the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on January 24, within the next few days.
Former Elite XC standout Brett "The Grim" Rogers (8-0) could be the next opponent to face off against former UFC Heavyweight Champion Josh "The Babyface Assassin" Barnett (23-5), according to a FiveOuncesOfPain.com report.
Barnett is coming off a one punch, highlight reel-type knockout over Pedro Rizzo at the first Affliction event back in July. Before that he competed twice in Japan on Sengoku cards against Hidehiko Yoshida and Jeff Monson. "The Babyface Assassin" was victorious in both bouts with a third round submission (heel hook) and a unanimous decision, respectively.
The former Pride FC star will look to make it four in a row against a fast rising, yet still unproven star in Brett Rogers.
"Grim" is one of many fighters still caught up in the Pro Elite fighter contracts fiasco. Like most of the ex-Elite XC stars, his contract status is still in limbo following the demise of the promotion last month.
During his eight-fight career he's never been taken out of the first round and has stopped each of his opponents with strikes. However, names like Jon Murphy, James Thompson and Ralph Kelly are nowhere near the skill level of a guy like Barnett.
This is a massive step up in competition for Rogers. And his all around game will certainly be put to the test on January 24.
He'll likely come in as an under dog, but "Grim" is always one punch away from ending a fight. Without question, Rogers will have to bring his "A" game to the Honda Center to have a chance to win this one ... but so, too, will Barnett.
Rogers is not going to be an easy fight for anybody.
The Affliction guys deserve some credit for rescuing Rogers from MMA purgatory if the bout comes to fruition. Nobody wants to see these ex-Pro Elite fighters on the sidelines anymore, especially exciting fighters like Brett Rogers. Kudos to them for getting this guy back in action.
"Day of Reckoning" will air live on pay-per-view (PPV) on fight night beginning at 9 p.m. ET. HDNet will also air some of the under card matches before the main card broadcast on PPV.
Antonio "Rogerio" Nogueira and Vladimir Matyushenko will square off in the featured fight of the HDNet portion of the card while WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski square off in the highly anticipated main event.

Am i the only one thinks that Barnett is ducking Aleks? After all those vids he posted of himself (yes i do believe it was him) confronting him backstage, he come at us with this. Also affliction could have signed Werdum for a fight. This is garbage and i hope Brett fluke KO’s him.

why would he duck him he already kicked his ass, maybe he is ducking fedor or holding out for a huge payday but not aleks.

I agree they shoulda grabbed Werdum to face Babyface. That would’ve been great if they’d also made Grim vs. Kimbo. They could’ve grabbed alot of the non-chalants that would try to watch Kimbo and use alot of Elite’s wasted promoting time to add on some easy buys and give a boost to an upstart promotion. Then those people still riding that bandwagon could’ve actually been pulled in to see real HW talent. (And throw dirt on the grave of Kimbo once and for all for that matter.)

kidding right? they can’t have werdum and barnett eliminate each other from a title shot. they have the makings of a solid hw division for sure but that’s it; and they need to stretch it out big time.

I think it should be:
Barnett vs Karitonov (if not get Werdum)
Grim vs Kimbo – just so I can see his fake ass get KO’d again.
Barnett will be too much for Rogers. Mismatches like this make me so unenthusiastic about watching the fight at all.

I think Rogers should invest in a plot and coffin, save his family the expense of a funeral. Barnett is light years beyond this guy, and while I’m not a fan of either, think this will be a KO inside of 30 seconds or a submission in the first if that doesn’t happen.

Whats up man? The daughter is good. So wher’ve I been. Well here it goes. I got in some shit with this guy because he was being a drunk ass and was talking shit to my girlfriend because his drunk ass thought she was someone else. This was while me, my daughter, and my girl were eating at a restraunt. We paid, I told my girl to take my daughter to the car, then I gave the dude a shot to the face. After he fell, I gave him a couple hell-bows, then left. This guy goes and calls the cops and they found me via my debit card info. Aint that some shit? Anyway, I ended up pleading to simple battery (only a misdermeanor thank God) and have a year of probation. Normally I keep my cool, but somethings I just cant give a pass to. I just got out last night. The worse part was being away from my daughter and my girl. Next time I have to just maintain and walk away. Thats it in a nutshell.

if there is a next time, a little tip is to yell “Help” or “Save me” or something as you laying down the beats. Most witnesses don’t really remember what they saw but when everyone heard you yelling for your life it sets up a reasonable defence. It worked for a friend who hit a bouncer everyone was so drunk they could only remember my friend screaming help and they let him off even though the bouncer had his face mulched. Yeah for hockey shirtin’ guys!

Rogers is done. Barnett is serious business. Dude can scrap, no matter what anyone says. He moves really really well for such a big dude. Super accurate, powerful, quick, and slick. Should be a KO.
As I type that, I also want to point out that, I still wont be surprised if Barnett under estimates him. Doesnt mean he will lose, just that there is a chance.

by roy on Nov 26, 2008 3:24 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Horribly lopsided fights kinda like a Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote main event. Give me a break about taking a shot at Affliction for matching up Barnett with an undefeated prospect. It’s a lot better than the UFC matching up Undefeated Shane Carwin with an overmatched Neil Wain. That being said Barnett by submission.Barnett is the 2nd best heavyweight in the world.Rogers is a good fighter but he’s not ready for Barnett.

by JV on Nov 26, 2008 4:04 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Carwin’s still an up and comer for how long the guy’s 34 years old.How much longer is the UFC going to wait before he starts fighting good fighters.

good point robert the guy has enough fights when is he going to fight somebody, shit i think he would beat lesnar.
by roy on Nov 26, 2008 4:21 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I tried to do a little research (read:wikipedia lol) on Carwin. He’s 10-0 with only 1 fight in the UFC. I have no idea of the caliber of his opponents before that, but I’m guessing they weren’t too good. That said, while he is 34, he will still need a few fights in the big leagues under his belt before he starts fighting the big boys.
by chefdaddy on Nov 26, 2008 7:40 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
i see what your saying chef but the guy is 34 yrs old and lesnar did it with one fight under his belt so i think its time for carwin to get his shot at some top talent
by roy on Nov 26, 2008 7:51 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
He’s had 2 fights in the UFC Christian Wellisch and Neil Wain.I’ve seen a couple of other fights he dominated both. One of his other opponents Sherman Pendergarst who fought in the UFC was beaten easily and that’s my point he’s finished everyone in the 1st round time to fight a legit opponent like maybe Gabe Gonzaga.
by Robert on Nov 26, 2008 8:35 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I guess your way makes more sense. I was going by the UFC/Bisping method. You know, fight for 2-3-4 years before you face a solid opponent. lol

by McArthur on Nov 26, 2008 3:25 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Are you kidding? Rogers vs Barnett is a joke, but you want to see Barnett vs Mir? Frank Mir is NOT a top heavyweight people stop saying he is just because he is fighting in the UFC’s mini tournament for the title. Mir would not last 3 minutes with Barnett.

(Yawn) Why, exactly, should I give a crap about Josh Barnett? He’s the last fighter anyone should get excited about. I’m not trying to be a jackass either – I honestly don’t see why there should be any interest in him whatsoever. Affliction’s matchmaking is a joke.

Barnett isn’t a free agent he’s under contract with Affliction and Sengoku.Just like Babalu is under contract with Affliction and Strikeforce,Arlovski is under contract for Affliction he was only loaned to EliteXC to fight on the CBS card, some other guys were also allowed to compete elsewhere because of the cancellation of Affliction’s 2nd card in Oct.

Brett has a puncher’s chance standing up and I noticed that Josh looks a lot more comfortable striking with Pedro so he might actually stand and get caught. But if the fight goes to the ground, Brett has no chance. Josh is just sick on the ground, especially from the top position.

by introvert on Nov 26, 2008 4:26 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
There is obviously a world of difference between beating someone 5 years ago and beating someone 1 month ago.
by Nate on Nov 26, 2008 4:56 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
And there is a bigger world of difference between a guy who has forged his legacy for years and has accomplished many great things in MMA, and a guy who is 2-1 in MMA. As per your logic, if Nelson beats Barnett he should go straight to #2 in the rankings, while Barnett goes to where?….12th, 18th, 20th (wherever Rogers is currently)?
Maybe you were the guy who did Mania’s rankings when they put Serra at #1 after beating GSP? ranking Brock higher than Randy at this point would be the same as that…..and that was just plain retarded.

by introvert on Nov 26, 2008 5:50 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I can not tell, all you do is hate on UFC,and anyway if one fighter beats another,he should be ranked a head of the one that lost, that is what rankings are for. This applys to all sports except the BCS rankings, and even they do it most of the time except when there is a situation like there is right now with the Big 12
by scott on Nov 26, 2008 7:32 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
So, with your reasoning…if Jason Thacker came back and fought Anderson Silva…knocked him out…he should be ranked higher than Anderson Silva? Seriously?
by introvert on Nov 26, 2008 7:42 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Hey, I don’t make the rankings ,but that is the point of them. This why teams like South Carolina and USF were ranked in the top 10 last year did they deserve it ,no,were they overrated yes,did they fall from the rankings ,yes.Rankings are not always right ,but you cannot justify having somebody who beat you in your last fight behind you.Just because you were top 5 does not mean you get to stay there for the rest of your career
by scott on Nov 26, 2008 9:31 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Brock should be rated one spot above Randy, does not mean he will be there forever, but until he loses again, that is where he should be.Also he does hold part of the heavy weight championship, although I know you hate the UFC,it still does mean something
by scott on Nov 26, 2008 9:35 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If you do not believe that is the way it is look at all the other sports rankings ,look at the history of their rankings, until then you are just ignorant about the subject, but all of us already know that just by reading some of your post
by scott on Nov 26, 2008 9:40 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
scotty you’re wrong buddy.. introvert is right what if Terry Martin who has been knocked out cold like 3 times in a row beats Nate Marquardt should he be ranked top 5 then? hell naw, rankings are built by a points system and if you come from 25th place and beats a top 3 ranked guy you won’t get to the 3d place.. and as for Brock Lesnar’s ranking he is the champion in the UFC right now and that’s really all you need to know because if there was a real ranking he would be behind Randy Couture.. take sports like tennis, soccer, basketball, and every other sport there is YOU do not just get ranked above the other guy or team just because you beat them, that’s just common sense..
by RoB on Nov 27, 2008 5:55 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Thanks Rob.
Scott, you are thinking about rankings like it’s some sort of tournament format…it’s not.
My favourite hockey team (the Montreal Canadiens) beat the Detroit Red Wings last night. Does that mean that Montreal should be above Detroit in the power rankings now?….hell no. Detroit is still the better team, and one game doesn’t change that. If it were the playoffs and the same thing happened, and Montreal beat them in the Stanley Cup Finals, then ya, the Habs would be the better team, because it’s a tournament format. MMA is not a tournament format (not the UFC anyway).

You drop the shit out of the loser and bump the winner ahead of them, unless it is someone that is lost all of their fights except 1,of course you have to use some different equations.I am not saying that a loser gets in to the top 5 ,that is ridiculous, this all started with Brock, and Brock deserves to be ranked ahead of Randy. He beat Herring ,who was top 10,and now Randy who was top 5 ,he deserves to be ahead of Randy,so no I am not wrong on this one, check all rankings formulas ,then tell me I am wrong.By your thoughts Herring should have still been ranked ahead of Brock. You can not have a double standard,he still has a lot more fights than Brock. So which way do you want it

I must be the only one who is entrigued with this match-up. With all the talk of Carwin and Cain shooting stars in the HW division, Rogers would’ve been an interesting addition to the thin UFC lineup at that weight class after the demise of ProElite. With the 8 ko’s to start his career, I like the fact we will get to see rather quickly if he might really have some talent with a giant step-up in competition or was a product of the joke that was EliteXC. Not saying The Grim has much of a shot and think once it hits the ground he is in big trouble. But the fight starts standing…? I’ll go 5% chance & credit due either way for the willingness to take a BIG step up and possibly prove something.

Ya, props to Rogers for stepping up anyway. He always seems to be the guy raising his hand when someone needs an oppontent……so props to him.

He had nowhere else to go, and nothing to lose. It should be an intersting fight. Barnett is one of my favourite fighters and in my opinion only second to Fedor. I have no doubt that he could either knock out or submit Arlovski. Arlovski since losing to Sylvia was only really impressive in his Affliction match but that was about it. We will see what he is made of when he fights Fedor.

LMFAO! I’m actually trying to picture that!

This is such a waste of time! Josh needs to fight top talent right now and at the moment Brett isn’t. Almost half of his 8 wins were against fighters with .500 records. Barnetts gonna DESTROY Rogers and put an end to him. They should give him someone closer to his level and give us a better fight with Barnett…..maybe make babalu move up and fight him, that would be a better fight IMO.

hahaha Babalu? they are friends so i don’t know about that, they have been training together for years.. just accept that affliction wants to build their fighters into stars, they can’t do what the UFC does and letting their stars fight each other only to get a loss on their record..

As a longtime fan of Josh Barnett I start to more and more dislike him… don’t know why that is.
I think Barnett is going to win quite easy though I hope that Rogers will be the victor.

lol whats the point of this fight? Not long ago Rogers was calling out Kimbo! Barnett is way out of his league and it will be an easy win for him. Does any1 else think that affliction shouldnt be wasting their money on pointless fights? Get Werdum in there with Barnett and tht will be a good fight. Does any casual fan even know Rogers, i know he appeared on CBS once or twice but still!

Anyone else think that maybe Affliction doesnt want to risk Barnett losing thus ruining a barnett fedor match?
by laserline on Nov 26, 2008 10:00 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
barnett has been ducking fedor for years, and how are they going to put that match on when they are bankrupt?
by kevin on Nov 26, 2008 10:01 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Barnett been ducking fedor for years? from what i remember Barnett has challenged Fedor many times.. and they could have fought already if Fedor hadn’t been injured as much as he has..

Barnett seems to be a crying baby when manhandled by Crocop in PRIDE. So what’s this sh^t about Babyface being #2 HW in the MMA? Big Nog, AA, and Couture would be in top 5. He should be in top 10.

Did you actaully see his fights with Crocop in Pride. If you did I do not see how you could say he was manhandled. In one fight Barnett dislocated his shoulder while having a full mount on Crocop, his shoulder just went and the fight had to be stopped, Crocop did not actually do anything. The second fight Crocop got a descision win but I did not see much man handling in that. The last fight he did get beaten quite badly by Crocop but that was straight after Barnett won a three round war with Nog. Barnett was exhausted while Crocop was pretty fresh from an early knockout of Silva. Stop your hating.

That was an awesome night. Barnett showed some major balls that night. I did however think Nog did enough to win the decision, but it was so damn close that either guy could have won it. I do think that if Nog won that fight, he would have beat CC in the finals…..Nog looked fresher after the semis….IMHO.
