Sambo vs Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Fedor Emelianenko to compete in 2009 ADCC Championships

Life as a competitor in the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) just got a lot more interesting.

Current WAMMA heavyweight champion and four-time World Combat Sambo Champion Fedor Emelianenko has signed on to compete in the 2009 ADCC Championships according to ADCombat.com.

Quoteworthy:

Fedor Emelianenko, after conquering the World of MMA, wants to show the world he is also the best submission grappler in the World. Fedor wants to make history and expand on the pioneer spirit of what Mark Kerr did in the late 90's when he was the champion of Pride and became the Weight and Absolute Champion of ADCC and went on to defend his title in the Superfights for two editions.

Anyone even remotely interested in grappling or submission fighting is sure to be excited at the prospect of seeing Emelianenko bring his formidable grappling skills to the world of ADCC.

Despite placing third last weekend in the semifinals of the 2008 World Combat Sambo Championships behind Bulgaria’s Blagoi Ivanov, Emelianenko has a total of 11 first place finishes in Sambo tournaments around the world, including four world titles.

He's also finished his last five mixed martial arts fights via submission, and will be a dangerous opponent for anyone on the mat.

As if that wasn't enough, 2008 Dream Middleweight Champion Gegard Mousasi will also throw his hat into the ADCC submission ring after going on an 11-0 tear in the world of mixed martial arts.

More on "The Young Vagabond":

Mousasi, the winner of the 2008 Dream Middleweight Grand Prix where he defeated former World ABJJ Absolute and ADCC middleweight Champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza in the final, also wants to test his ground skills against the top names in submission grappling. This sets up some humongous possible match-ups such as a rematch with "Jacare" or facing current ADCC Middleweight Champion and rising UFC star Demian Maia.

The ADCC has always been a showcase of amazing talent and stunning submissions. Now with two of the worlds best fighters looking to prove their mettle, the 2009 ADCC Championship could finally answer once and for all: Who is the world's best submission grappler?

Fedor and Mousasi in the ADCC. What are their chances?

Let's hear it Maniacs.

fedor’s and gegard’s chances in winning? zip and zero, respectively

by neihrick on Nov 21, 2008 3:36 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Gegard will submit as soon as entering the building. Fedor won’t win either without his precious GNP. Am really hoping for Demian-Jacare rematch. Demian said he wasn’t mentally there in their last outing but he will submit this time.

i am a little surprised that the UFC is allowing Maia to compete

by James S on Nov 21, 2008 4:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

was thinking the same thing.is this a definite mania that maia will be competing?

by scott on Nov 21, 2008 4:08 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

they let alot of their fighters compete in the adcc.

by b.w. on Nov 21, 2008 4:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

My trainer Bennet Dewan submitted David Heath at a Grappling competetion when he was under contract with UFC (don’t know if he still is?). I don’t think they care as long as it’s not MMA.

by wAyNe on Nov 21, 2008 5:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

well, they obviously have a problem with Fedor competing in sambo. Double standard?

by john on Nov 22, 2008 8:05 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

What makes you think they don’t stand a chance? I would give Mousasi not as good of a chance as Fedor but Mousasi has proven his ground skills. Wouldn’t beat Maia but would make it all the way to the finals to face him.

by Big E on Nov 21, 2008 5:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The grappling level in adcc is lightyears ahead of guys in mma. Excellent grapplers in mma have easily gotten tapped there guys like big nog, werdum, aoki, ricco the list goes on.

by NameNotRequired on Nov 21, 2008 6:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Lets be real, as much as I like MOusasi….If he were to spend 2 minutes on the ground with Jacre (without strikes) he would stand ZERO chance whatsoever!

@ NameNotRequired

You are a retard. You don’t know what you are talking about.

Mark Kerr absolute champion.
Dean Lister absolute champion.
Ricardo Arona absolute champion.

Werdum is heavyweight champ.
Jeff Monson heavyweight champ.
Matt Serra Lighweight finals.

List goes on…

I see why Fedor did not – and probably will never – sign with the UFC. The guy is busy all over the place competing in different competitions and different organizations. He appears to have a lot of various interests when it comes to competing and signing an exclusive deal with one org would really hamper his options.

by stevo on Nov 21, 2008 3:40 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

i agree

by roy on Nov 21, 2008 3:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah because the UFC never lets their competitors compete in the ADCC while under contract. oh wait, yeah they do. try to make up another excuse for Fedor not signing with the UFC. hopefully one day all the blind nuthuggers like you will realize that the ONLY reason he has not signed with the UFC is due to fear. he should actually get a yellow stripe tattoo on his spine.

ya buddy fear of what?? beating the Big nog the best HW the UFC has??? or perhaps he’s scared of 45 year of Randy? oh wait no no it HAS To be LEsnar yes yes its the fear of Lesnar, it has nothing to do with fear buddy its cuz fedor is busy doing other things that under UFC contract your not allowed to compete in other combat sports such as Sambo.. don’t hate on fedor when their is nothing to hate on the man is a legend in the sport just like GSP and just like Anderson silva so give him his credit.

by ricky on Nov 21, 2008 6:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah it’s a good thing fedor was able to compete in sambo this year. I’m sure he’s really proud of his bronze finish. hahahah, bronze, what a joke.

by jj on Nov 21, 2008 6:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

you know he may have gotten bronze this year.. but what about his gold he’s gotten for the past 7 yrs?? one year he gets bronze STILL top 3 in a very hard competetion and he’s a joke … good one

Don’t waste your time trying to reason with smart guy here.
He’s either being deliberately difficult or he really is that retarded. Either way you’re not going to get through to him.

hey ricky, if an engineer builds 100 bridges in his life and sucks one d**k he will forever be known as a c***sucker. the same applies with fedor and sambo.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA……
Fear of who or what exactly?
Last time i checked he had handled the top guy in the UFC HW division twice.
That has to be the most ridiculous statement i’ve ever seen posted on this site.
Come on admit it, you’re Dana White aren’t you.

by The_Cannibal on Nov 21, 2008 6:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

he’s obviously afraid. so afraid that he has to fight in headgear wearing sambo matches and non striking BJJ tournaments. grow a spine fedor!! fight some real competition.

get dana’s balls out of your mouth jj amd you mite be able to say something worth hearing

The man competes in Sambo and now in the ADCC in addition to MMA not in place of it.

Yeah, I don’t see Fedor winning this either. The high level fighters at ADCC have seen an armbar before.

by naturalshadow on Nov 21, 2008 4:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes – but they have not seen FEDOR

Fedor is much scarier than all the submissions in ther Jiu-Jitsu book put together & applied at the same time

by Anger Jack on Nov 21, 2008 5:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I would expect it to be the opposite. Who wouldn’t want to be the guy that taps Fedor?

why cant fedor just fight Anderson Silva in 2009 at 205lbs??? That would make me happy.

by Anger Jack on Nov 21, 2008 5:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

that would be the retirement of anderson silva

by brendan on Nov 21, 2008 8:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Why would Fedor cut weight when he can Kick any Heavyweight in the worlds ass? makes no sense. People cut weight cause they cant cut it in the heavier divisions. Why would you cut weight if you already dominating the Heavyiest division in the world.

If Anderson wants Fedor, Anderson should NOT cut weight and fight Fedor at 220 lbs, which is what Anderson walks around at anyway!

Sick of hearing how Fedor should move down in weight! Fighters want their shot at the king? Then they should get their WEIGHT UP and challenge Fedor at heavyweight.

by john on Nov 22, 2008 2:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Because Dana would never let his prized fighter get thrown to a lion. As much as I love Anderson Silva, he’s just not at Fedor’s level.

by haglnuts on Nov 21, 2008 3:54 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

by James S on Nov 21, 2008 4:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly, maybe if A. Silva beat up some cans and some over sized skill less fighters he’d be on Fedor’s level.

by O damn he got caught on Nov 21, 2008 4:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Out of curiousity, will you guys show a modicum of respect if Fedor trashes AA? I won’t be swinging from the nuts near as much if Fedor loses, hell, everybody has to get beat sometime.

by chefdaddy on Nov 21, 2008 7:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah because silva would get armbarred? out struck? go watch an anderson silva kickboxing match once he’d kill fedor and eat him for a snack, go destroy another MW, and then go back to 205 and fight 3 guys at once and still not get hurt

by randy murders on Nov 21, 2008 7:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

There are way too many MW studs in BJJ for Moussasi to make an impact. However, the HW circuit isn’t as full of talent. For that reason, I say Fedor gets further, but has zero chance at winning. However, it would be awesome if he did.

by ViolentMike on Nov 21, 2008 3:56 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Kerr was never champ in Pride. Article is misleading. Anyway, I think Fedor will do well, but won’t win. If Mousasi mayches up with Jacare, he might lose a limb

by Noodles on Nov 21, 2008 4:08 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Personally I love the ADCC.

With that said, the ADCC is SO much different than MMA. Obviously it’s only Sub’s and points if no finish occurs, but people sometimes get clouded over MMA fighters entering into the ADCC. Just because your a sick mma fighter does not mean you will do good. Fedor has good sub’s, but I bet Lister tap’s him in no time.

by JasonB on Nov 21, 2008 4:27 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Robert Drysdale is the worlds best submission grappler although hickson gracie and marcello garcia are up there. Fedor the best mma fighter but not so sure about how he will do in ADCC

Who has a better record at HW than Fedor?

Nobody

Who name does any HW in the world say when asked the question “who’s the #1 fighter in the world?”

Fedor

by introvert on Nov 21, 2008 4:43 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It’s all because of Dana White’s propaganda (after all if you can’t sign the fighter – at least try to talk as much shit as possible about the fighters who are not with you)

And as usual – you have a shitload of Dana White a$$munchers

And who exactly is in the UFC that would challenge him? He’s beaten Nog (the true champ, in my eyes at least). Couture? Please. And IMO it would be one fight that ’ol Brock would NOT want. Hmmm….maybe Mir would be a great match! Psyche!!!

Why? Because you think that’s how he should spend his life? I’m sure once he hears of “sbud” he’ll change his plans/style of life to make you and a couple thousand (?) people in the U.S. happy. Oh, wait, he has MILLIONS of fans who like what he does. It just so happens they might be on the other side of the planet. I doubt he cares what his detractors over here think. I also douby he cares what his proponents over here think.

Skill and talent are always great tools to have on your side, but let’s not count out HEART. Fedor has that, and Mousasi is NO JOKE. I’m not saying they’ll win the tourney (although I wouldn’t be surprised), but I think they both will get a win at least.
