UFC Quick Quote: Demian Maia continues to lobby for Michael Bisping fight

"He’s with a great popularity, is a good guy to fight now and I think it’d be a great fight. It doesn’t mean I’d win, but he fought great guys and always made god fights, and I believe it’d be a good fight to my career. I need this, I need good fights and I believe the time has come.... He’s a stand-up guy, doesn’t like to fight on the ground, but he’s not easy. I always think the same, he’ll try to stand, avoid the ground, and I’ll try to put him down and do my Jiu-Jitsu, trying to submit."
-- Undefeated middleweight contender Demian Maia continues to talk about a possible fight against Michael Bisping with Tatame.com. The accomplished Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt called out "The Count" after he stopped Nate Quarry in less than three minutes via rear naked choke at UFC 91: "Couture vs. Lesnar" over the weekend. He has also already accepted the position opposite Bisping on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) if UFC President Dana White offers it to him. The only problem is that Maia would be unable to represent the "U.S." in the "U.S. vs. U.K."-themed show. Unless, of course, that format, which White has called "dumb" is scrapped between now and the end of January when production on TUF 9 is set to commence.

this is very smart on Damien’s part, Bisping has a name, but it’s not going to happen! The UFC has spent time building Bisping, and won’t let an up and comer submit a rising star! Before you guys jump on me, I’m not saying it’s right! Plus bisping has TUF coming up!
The fight has potential to happen, but it’s minimum 15 months away!

Your right, it would only be a matter of time before Maia submits Bisping and that would put a dagger in the UFC. They would have to build Maia up before putting these two together.

i agree kevin the ufc has put to much into bisping to have him lose to damien yet, down the road yes.

I think you are all writing off Bisping a little too early. One thing he is not is a stupid fighter. He is not going to play into Maia’s hands and allow this to go to the ground.
He just proved against (a juiced) Leben that he has the smarts to fight his fight and beat tough guys.
I think Bisping can keep this standing and take another U/D or late TKO after all Maia’s standup sucks.
by Nick J on Nov 18, 2008 12:31 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
you can come up with a game plan to keep a fight standing, but Maia will just pull guard! I’m a huge Bisping fan, but his jits isn’t even close to maia
by kevin on Nov 18, 2008 12:46 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I hope other fighters take note of what Maia’s doing. This is an incredibly smart move on his part because he is largely unknown to mainstream mma fans at this point, and if he were able to get a spot on the next season of TUF he would GREATLY increase his marketability. Plus fighting Bisping would put him on the short road to a title shot. I don’t know that it’s gonna work, but I think he needs to keep calling out big name fighters. Guys like Machida need to realize that winning isn’t enough. You need to demand to fight top guys who are going to get you exposure and create a buzz with mainstream mma fans.
by GregC on Nov 18, 2008 1:23 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I totally agree. Plus, he is being very respectful about it. He says he might not win, talks about how Bisping is a good fighter etc. etc.
Im a huge Bisping fan, but I too, think it would be a mistake to fight Demian right now. Once he gets more comfortable on his feet, then maybe. It all depends on Maia getting Bisping to the ground. Most Jits guys, that are awesome on the ground, work on there standup, and then that is where they start losing. Thats what I would hope for if he fought Bisping.

Demian is learning from Wanderlei. If he has that same killer instinct that Wandy has, he would be frightening.

Good point Greg C, it’s kind of like in the workplace – the person that accomplishes something and tells everyone including their boss about it always gets more recognition/promotion than the similar person who doesn’t say anything at all. Keep at it Maia.

Well, Demian is in the running as a TUF coach if you believe a few of the rumors. Also Hendo or Ace both said they weren’t really interested and Dana has previously said that UK vs US concept was retarded. But i agree with your assessment. He would sub Bisping.

He would beat Bisping. Maia stand up is much weaker but as soon as it hits the ground Bisping would be in trouble. His BBJ is better than Quarry but would still get subbed at some point.
by UKmmaBOY on Nov 18, 2008 12:00 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t see Maia getting that fight to the ground unless he pulls guard and if it goes to the ground I don’t see it staying there very long. If Rashad Evans couldn’t hold Bisping down and had trouble getting him to the ground I don’t see Maia getting there.
by O damn he got caught on Nov 18, 2008 12:42 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The difference with Bisping fighting Rashad is that he doesn’t have to worry about getting submitted when he tries to get up. Just like when Tim Sylvia fought Nogueira, if he had tried to get up like that against Randy he would have been successful, but against an elite BJJ guy like Nogueira he ended up in a guillotine. Bisping couldn’t just try reckless escapes against Maia because he would put himself in danger of getting submitted if he made any mistakes.
by GregC on Nov 18, 2008 1:26 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Bisping is trash. The UFC is protecting him because they want the market in England. There is a huge market there. Bisping could not beat the top 10 185’s in the UFC. All of these guys would murder him.
1. Spider
2. Nate
3. Wandy
4. Dan
5. Rich
6. Maia
7. Leites
8. Okami
9. MacDonald
10. Palhares
Any of these 10 destroy him. And no, they are not in the correct top 10 order

How does beating Mcdonald & Nate get you a top contender? Maia IS! an up and comer himself. Palhares went 3 rounds with Hendo, so it would be a step up for Maia! Get your sh*t together homie!

Okay let’s see Maia 4-0
Pahlares 1-1
Hmm…….1 guy is moving up in ranks and the other is going down.
Why would Maia fight a guy that is going down in ranks?
Usually streaks gets you in position, ask Cote smart guy.
Your a freaking idiot. LOL.
by Pimp_man on Nov 18, 2008 12:51 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Maia 4-0
Pahlares 1-1
Let’s balance that……1 guy going up in ranks the other going down.
Why would he fight a lower ranked guy? Beating Pahlares does nothing for Maia.
Ask Cote about streaks and how it get’s you title shots smart guy. LOL
by Pimp_man on Nov 18, 2008 12:53 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
LMFAO! You think Palhares has a record of 1-1? Palhares has an 8-2 record and was on a six fight win streak before Hendo! Hes 1-1 in the UFC only you tool!
by JV on Nov 18, 2008 1:17 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It think joe silva wants a definitive answer as to where maia’s striking stands before giving him a title shot so i doubt they will match him with a grappler. Best bet is someone like Marquardt. Good standup with enough wrestling and sub defense.
by NameNotRequired on Nov 18, 2008 1:23 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
JV I’m pretty sure Pimpman was comparing their UFC records not their overall records. he was just showing the direction they’ve gone in their last few fights since joining the UFC. And while Palhares might be a step up in talent, he would be a bad fight for Maia right now. Maia is looking to move toward a title shot, and beating a guy whose only televised fight was a loss and who isn’t well known isn’t the way to do that. He needs to fight a guy with a bigger name like a Marquart or a Bisping. Martin Kampmann would be a good fight too, unless he moves down to 170.
by GregC on Nov 18, 2008 1:32 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Marquart would be another good matchup! But according to the man thats being pimped, Maia should only fight someone with a win streak!
by JV on Nov 18, 2008 1:33 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I hear GregC, But this is the thing, Bisping is not going to happen! Bisping has TUF and fighting Maia does nothing to get Bisping closer to a title fight! Lets put that to rest. So who else is there?
Maia/Leites Maia/Palhares Maia/Marquardt Maia/Almeida
All those would be a step up in competition right? My point about Palhares was this: Palhares went 3 rounds with Hendo. IMO Maia is not ready for Hendo. So if Maia wouldnt get past Palhares then whats the point?
by JV on Nov 18, 2008 1:43 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
the only reason palhares went 3 rounds with henderson is because he was spending the whole fight on the ground on his own will. as soon as henderson would get close he would fall to the ground. henderson was smart not to go to the ground so he would try to get the fight standing. sure palhares went 3 rounds but he didn’t do sh*t. another thing, bisping has a better chance of beating maia now than later. i don’t think he would but chances are better for him right now. maia striking isn’t the best but he will only get alot better especially with wanderlei on his side. so fighting him a year from now doesn’t favor bisping. either way i agree with most of you in that white won’t want this fight to happen. and if it did happen my money would be on maia.
by parisyan_sux on Nov 18, 2008 3:00 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Thank you GregC.
And JV if I was comparing overall records Maia still has the better record. LOL.
How does fighting Maia not get him close to a title shot? Dana white has already said Maia is 2 fights away from a title shot. You should watch the press conference.
Dude you don’t know diddly squat!! LMAO.

This is a very simple fight to break down. If it stays standing Bisping has a 99% chance of winning, if it goes to the mat Maia has a 99% chance of winning.
So all those who are saying Maia is going to win this as a cake walk are dum…

O, so I guess he just lost all his TDD and ground skills when he lost 20 lbs?? Please.. get real, so Charles Mccarthy got a take down on Bisping, big woop. Like that automatically means that ANYONE can take him down and wreck him. Your forgetting the part where Mccarthy didn’t even answer the bell for the 2nd rd. Just because a sub par fighter got one take down on Bisping doesn’t mean that it’s open season now and that he has no ground game.

How are you deriving emotion from text? You can’t see the person, you can’t hear the person, thats ridiculous… And yea you worded it perfectly;
IF he gets to the ground sure, it’s over. But the same is true for Maia IF the fight doesn’t go to the ground. And from the sound of it; even if Bisping could beat Hendo, Franklin etc.. you’d still be posting the same ignorant crap about him. Just another hater..

quarry does NOT have better stand-up than bisping, not even close. he may have a little more power but thats about it. i know before the quarry/maia fight alot of people liked quarry (he’s a likable guy) but i always thought quarry was a step down from j-mac for maia and knew he would’nt be a challenge to maia. bisping would be.
by b.w. on Nov 18, 2008 1:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree. Nate’s got heavier hands than Bisping, but Bisping mixes up his strikes a lot better. He’s more accurate with his punches and he utilizes his kicks really well. And Quarry was a solid win for Maia, but his limited ground skills made him a less difficult opponent than McDonald. Bisping would be a very tough fight, but I think Maia would be able to take it. I think he would have a tough time getting it to the ground, but as soon as he did Bisping would be in trouble. Bisping is good at scrambling and getting back to his feet, but it’s a lot different when competing against a BJJ world champion who will take advantage of any mistake he makes trying to get back up.
by GregC on Nov 18, 2008 3:17 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
bisping is one of my least favorite fighters. but, his style matches up with maia better than quarry’s. bisping has much better footwork, and is way lighter on his feet. plus his takedown defense is better as well. i wouldnt say that maia would own bisping at all. i actually think this would be a pretty exciting, evenly matched fight.

i understand completely. but if you have a good enough ground game to survive and get up(which bisping does), you can turn it around and win. just like hendo did. its obvious that we’re gonna butt heads on the subject forever so i’ll just let it go. but as long as you understand that there’s two sides of the fence, thats all i was trying to accomplish. lol… u liked the pimp slap comment though, huh?!

I would like to see this fight. I don’t think the UFC will do this right now just because Bisbing is committed to TUF for the next few months. I’m not sure that protecting Bisbing is as big a concern as many think. He is popular, but I don’t think a loss would really change that. But I believe the UFC has learned that protecting fighters is not worth it in the long term. Yes if an established star can continue winning it allows them to be sold as legitimate. But if a unknown upsets a big name it creates a new star for them to promote. Gonzaga is a good example of this.

If anything he just copies Hendo’s gameplan vs Palhares and it’s over for Maia. Besides, even if Maia pulls guard, apply the head crank to break the closed guard and just stand up. There’s no reason to stay on the ground if Bisping doesn’t have to.

bisping would rather fight at heavy wieght then fight maia
bispings preperation in the gym for this fight if it happens is perfecting the proper tap fingers fully extended with three firm full taps.

Maia is the MAN! There is no way, no how, Bisping would even make it out of the 1st round. Bisping is sooooooo overrated its not even funny. They should serve this chump to Maia to shut alot of people up. B R O C K

It would be extremly difficult for Maia to take Bisping to the ground, Evans and Hamill both struggled at LHW and that does translate to this fight. I believe Bisping would keep the fight standing and pick Maia apart, only going for the finish if it Maia was badly hurt and vulnerable to some of Bispings brutal ground and pound. Another factor is that Bisping is one of few fighters who doesnt have to pass gaurd to inflict serious damage on the ground. Bisping would crush him easily.

Personally I would rather see Maia in with Big Dog Richardo Almeida. I think two great bjj fighters going head to head would be a great fight. I think the fight Almeida had with Cote was close if he had won he would have got the shot against Anderson Silva so if Maia wants to move up the ladder this fight would be just as big as Bisping.
