WWE takes credit for Lesnar's success, knocks UFC 91 undercard

World Wrestling Entertainment (also known as the land of make believe) has added a new storyline to its Rolodex of preposterous and unimaginative fairy tales.
In fact this one is so contemptible, it may even trump the universally panned fable of the posthumous desecration of Katie Vick.
Brock Lesnar defeated Randy Couture at UFC 91 this past weekend to capture the UFC heavyweight championship belt and now the WWE website wants to take some of the credit for it.
From one of the many men behind the curtain:
For his part, Lesnar took the encouragement of the WWE Universe and the hard lessons forged during his fiery time at WWE and showed UFC and the world why he is not only a man of mettle but also a former three-time WWE Champion.
They also tout Lesnar as "The first man to capture both the WWE Championship and the UFC Heavyweight Championship", as if the McMahon's heavyweight strap carried some type of prestige in the sports community.
And if this unholy union of belts was such a landmark, then how about some overdue credit for The World's Most Dangerous Can? Ken Shamrock was actually the first man to hold titles in both organizations when the 1993 UFC Superfight champion went on to claim both the Intercontinental and Tag Team titles during his four-year run.
Anyway, it doesn't really matter what Lesnar did in the WWE. His ability to overcome Couture on November 15 was a direct result of his athleticism and two-year dedication to the sport of mixed martial arts, coupled of course with the inevitable decline in skill and speed of the 45-year old Couture.
The WWE is notorious for its suspension of disbelief. However the same article that wants credit for forging the newest UFC title holder is also poking fun at the UFC for its decision to air undercard bouts in an effort to fill the three hour broadcast.
Here's more:
Critics have noted that many of the fights on the UFC pay-per-view ended in the first round, leaving UFC producers scrambling to fill the three-hour event with content. The dearth of hearty competition left many viewers to watch less prestigious under-card fights and only served to bolster claims that UFC pay-per-view events can often be a "crap shoot" in regards to filling the full three hours.
Like most detractors, the clowns at WWE probably didn't bother to watch any of the fights in question. Did anyone not fly out of their seat after the Jeremy Stephens Shoryuken on Rafael dos Anjos? Or how about the slick submissions by Mark Bocek and Matt Brown?
And how does the WWE have the audacity to say anything about pay-per-view "filler" when they consistently populate their monthly offerings with such crafty performers like The Great Khali?
The WWE had its time with Lesnar, but that time is gone. They gave him a name, not a doctorate in mixed martial arts. He walked out on them and like most jilted lovers, they can't seem to let it go.
Instead of attacking the hard work of the fighters on the UFC 91 undercard, they should probably focus more on maintaining the ignis fatuus of professional wrestling.
After all, with Survivor Series just a week away, Triple H still has to figure out a way to convincingly job to Oleg Prudius, effectively making him the first man to win the WWE Championship and the United States Heavyweight Sambo Championship.

I read this artice on the WWE site. Complete BS. Looks like they have some hard feelings for the UFC. This was one of the most enjoyable cards I’ve seen in a while. It’s great to be able to see all the “filler” undercard fights!

The WWE has every right to take credit for Lesnar’s success. They made him who he is today. Without ever being crowned the WWE heavyweight champion, I dont think the UFC would be a possibility in his life. Just kidding..felt like being a troll today.

I think the WWE has a point here. There’s no way Brock would have had a title shot without his WWE career. He even said that he hadn’t earned this shot…the UFC only have him one because it would yield high PPV buys. Without the WWE, he would be on the level of a Shane Carwin. I don’t think they contributed at all to his MMA training, but they did help tremendously in setting him up with a shot at the UFC Heavyweight belt before he had actually earned the opportunity.

The WWE is a freak show that we all grew up lovin’. I myself admit to bein’ a fan. But after the Stone Cold Steve Austin days, that was it for me. I just shifted my focus 100% on MMA, though some of the focus was leaned towards boxing.

The WWE can take credit for making Brock Lesnar a star! But no one can take the credit for Brock being an MMA Champ but Brock Lesnar! Not every pro wrestler can just come over and be good! Lesnar is just a freak of nature!

No joke, this was a nice write up Jesse. The WWE is getting stomped in the numbers just like boxing so they are trying to poke at the UFC beast to get a little publicity. They completely do not deserve any response by any UFC official. I really hope Dana doesn’t respond to this.

Without the WWE Lesnar has no household name recognition. And yes, the WWE matches have the outcomes pre-scripted, thus making it very easy to fill three hours when you know exactly how long each match will last, barring some unforeseen incident (see: Hart, Owen). Despite the scripted nature of the shows, the matches are very physical and definitely take a toll. I will admit to being a fan, have been since I was about 5. Right now there is a shortage of good personalities, but hey they can’t all be The Rock or Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Big deal, like it or not the WWE is in competition with the UFC for the same demographics. The UFC takes pot-shots at its competition regularly so who cares if the WWE does too. And truth be told, if it wasn’t for the WWE Lesnar would not be the star that he is today, no matter how talented and athletic he is.
by prophet on Nov 17, 2008 12:56 PM EST reply actions

poor arguement. dana white has done nothing but praise the wwe and vince mcmahon anytime anyone mentions that company or it’s chairman. he repeatedly tells everyone that he has a ton of respect for mcmahon and the business he has built. he may take shots at other mma companies but he has never publically spoken bad about the wwe.
by jj on Nov 17, 2008 1:57 PM EST up reply actions
Just because White hasn’t criticized the WWE doesn’t mean the WWE wouldn’t criticize the UFC. And all they’re really saying is Lesnar’s accomplishments in the WWE match what he accomplished in the UFC. I don’t agree, but they’re entitled to say that, considering they basically sunk in the money to build him into the star he is today, which was the ONLY reason he was given a title shot.
And to whoever said they aren’t in competition, they are both forms of entertainment, regardless of whether one is a combative sport and the other a soap opera. The target demographics are the same they both hype matches in similar ways.
by prophet on Nov 17, 2008 4:00 PM EST up reply actions
Well when Brock was about to fight Mir, Vince allowed the UFC to use WWE footage of Brock to hype the fight. When asked about it, Vince said that he didn’t really feel like they were in competition with each other.
Though I don’t think Vince deals with the website all that often, and I wouldn’t be surprised with others in the organization taking shots/feeling threatened.

“The worlds most dangerous can” LOL, lost to tito 3 times and has a record of 26-13 what a joke. How can anyone take the WWE seriously, I watched AWA and WWF as a kid and hulk hogan was my hero, and in my teens realized it was fake LOL. WWE=bad actors, oversizes steriod freakshows with low IQ’s. UFC= real fighters, years of experience in all fighting disciplines, and I don’t believe there juiced up, sorry bj penn but very few of them have that huge body builder look. I’m still in disbelieve the way randy lost, that damn serra look alike bunch that barely touched randy behind the ear. To be honest Randy is old and I think deep down he new he should retire but the stupid ufc wouldn’t let him and now look what happened he could have left on a high note, with 2 dominating wins but now loses to some inexperienced white ape, damn it.

who said the ufc wouldn’t let him retire? couture was not trying to retire, he was trying to get out of his contract to fight for another mma promotion. the ufc let him retire once before, why wouldn’t they let him now? and being the champ had little to do with it since many champions have either been stripped or left while still holding the title.

26-13 is a better record than Couture’s actually (after Saturday). That’s not taking the level of competition into account, but bringing up his 26-13 record as if it’s terrible is a bit ridiculous.

by PW on Nov 17, 2008 6:52 PM EST up reply actions
OK, by stating this on their website, the WWE has basically done an admirable job of recognizing the UFC as a huge competitor, a huge success, and likely a huge threat. The WWE used to be the king of PPV until TUF 1 ended. Now the UFC destroys them. Also, taking credit for Brock is just stupid. You paid him alot of money, and got his name out there. Still though, Brock, Brocks wrestling coaches back in the day, and his current training partners made Brock a UFC champion today. The WWE didn’t make Brock. They just made him known.
I work with a guy that is a small time pro wrestler/promoter, trying to reak into the WWE. He recently had a tryout with the WWE and apparently Dusty Rhodes was one of the scouts, and Dusty says that MMA fights are all “jobs”. He also said that if they weren’t MMA would die because someone is going to get killed. This is an ignorant statement, from an ignorant old redneck, that knows nothing about safety in professional sports. Did the WWE die when Chris Benoit pulled a double homicide/suicide on his own family while in a drug induced rage a while back? What about the numerous WWE athletes that have died premature deaths, due to the steroids theyre encouraged to use, and the drugs and alcohol they get into from being on the road. Bam Bam Bigelow, Curt “Mr. Perfect” Hennig, Lex Luger…the list is very long. Did the WWE die when they staged a ridiculous stunt that went wrong, ultimately costing Owen Hart’s life? Do they make any apologies for the fact that their biggest draw right now (JeffHardy) is a raging cocaine addict, who is on the verge of being kicked out of the WWE after his second strike, even though they won’t kick him out until he’s no longer profitable? Do they mention how “a living legend, and one of the all time greats”, Jake “The Snake” Roberts is an old fat crackhead now, who’s been to rehab like its a second home? No, because they only care about the money and putting asses in the seats. WWE wrestlers aren’t as healthy as MMA fighters, not by a long shot. Theyre on the road all the time, they dont eat right, they drink heavily, and as Brock put it, they don’t live clean lives. The WWE is completely full of shit.
by --utaptout-- on Nov 17, 2008 2:11 PM EST reply actions
Pretty sad, you would think that with MMA being labeled “human cock fighting” even though it’s a legally sanctioned sport; that at the very least the professional wrestling business would have garnered some type of negative reprocussions with these types of stats..
by O damn he got caught on Nov 17, 2008 2:44 PM EST up reply actions
Beilieve it or not, pro wrestling is also sanctioned by the same commissions that do boxing and MMA. In the end its all about the almighty dollar. Pro wrestling makes a ton of money, and therefore so do the commissions.
by --utaptout-- on Nov 17, 2008 5:42 PM EST up reply actions
Not since McMahon went to congress and basically pulled back the curtain on wrestling. He admitted the matches were fixed and called it “sports entertainment” instead of a “sport,” meaning it is not subject to state sanctioning or the drug testing that goes along with sanctioning.
by PW on Nov 17, 2008 6:55 PM EST up reply actions
All WWE did for him was make him well known, i think they probably did more bad than good for him anyway. I mean imagine how good he’d be now if he started tarining mma after winning the 2000 NCAA wrestling championship. And WWE could of had possibly taken a few years off his life, where steroid taking use to be (possibly still is) encouraged. Where so many off their wrestlers are addicted to all kinds of drugs and lots die before the age of 45, Brock himself had a pain killer addiction right?
And it’s not like he furthed his amateur wrestling skils there much, in fact he probably lost some skill than gained any. Also what’s the filler thing all about? Half of the guys on WWE’s roster can barely wrestle (the fake wrestling) and are only there for their physique. Most if not all of the UFC 91 fights were exciting, dosn’t matter if lots ended in round 1 or does WWE judge stuff by how long it goes for, the same people who had 3 second main events. And speaking of going on for to long surely the WWE has, it should of died in the 80’s.
Anyway i’ll look forward to seeing UFC fill tv time with excting fights whether undercard fights or not and well WWE can fill their tv time up with stuf flike the Katie Vick storyline like Jesse said or some other stuff they’ve done like having a 90 year old woman get pregnant and then give birth to a HAND! Yes you read that right a hand! Oh dear…

The only truth to their statement is that they had to fill time on the pay-per-view with undercard bouts. Isn’t that actually a big plus for all the viewers? We got to see what like 9 fights instead of 5? SWEET! And the fact that the televised portion of the card had a bunch of fights ending before 3 rounds is another plus, we got to see a bunch of finishes! The WWE wouldn’t know anything about that though since they already know how long their “soap opera” will be on pay-per-views since it’s fake and scripted anyways.
