Demian Maia: 'Michael Bisping is a good fight for me'

Props: Newsday
Quoteworthy:
"I never have a strategy when I come into a fight. I see what happens and fight anywhere, standing, on the ground, wherever. I come to give the fans a good fight.... It’s up to Dana White and Joe Silva. There are many tough guys. Maybe Michael Bisping is a good fight for me."
Demian Maia talks about a possible match up with Michael Bisping moments after he finished Nate Quarry via first round submission (rear naked choke) at UFC 91: "Couture vs. Lesnar" last night. It was the fourth win for the Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion inside the Octagon, all of which have come by way of submission. He is clearly ready to compete against the top in the division, including "The Count;" however, Bisping is slated to serve as coach on season nine of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). Therefore, he will more than likely be tied up for most of early 2009 -- TUF 9 begins taping in February. Thales Leites, Nate Marquardt and the winner of the UFC 92 bout between Yushin Okami and Dean Lister are also some good possibilities. Let's see how this situation shakes out in the coming days and months.

Good match up hope it happens and they let Nate vs Hendo happen instead of Bisping vs HEndo.

I heard he took bronze. That’s ridiculous. First Handy then him even though it’s not MMA it’s pretty close.

This would be a great match up! With Franklin and Hendo not jumping ath the chance to coach opposite of Bisping on the next TUF show, I actually have heard that Maia is now a candidate to coach against Bisping on the show!
I wouldnt be against it! Maia could teach anyone a thing or 2 about the ground game!
By the way, I made a killing saturday night betting on the fights. The only fight I had wrong was Stevenson/Florian, but I had that on a small parlay!

This guy rocks! Dunno if he can beat Bisping though.. only because Bisping’s size might be a little bit too much for him plus Bisping might have better standup

Man, i’ve been hyping Demian ever since i saw him fight Ryan Stout at GFC. He’s really coming into his own and i would bet him to sub Bisping. Any fan of his needs to see the armbar he hit on Flavio at the 07 ADCC finals. Sick business.

bisping definitely has better stand up and has pretty good takedown defense, rashad evans and matt hammill had a hard time taking him down at light heavy weight. i think bisping will stick and move and stay out of range but i see the fight hitting the ground at one point and him being submitted by the master of submissions maia

Im sad to say this but Bisping will lose to Maia. Ive been watching Maia since his BJJ tournaments and always thought he would be handful if he transitioned to MMA and I love to watch him as he is such an inspiration on the ground. It is not a good matchup for Bisping at all. Although he has some decent jits Maia is phenomenal on the ground and I dont see anyone getting out of being subbed if they roll with him including Anderson.

i really hope that bisping takes this fight because he will be submitted just like the rest. bisping hasnt fought anyone that excells in a specific aspect of the game like maia does. Maia hasnt seemed to have much of a problem getting his opponents to the mat either

Most impressive performance by Maia in my opinion. Incredible efficiancy in finishing Nate.
Not to get off topic. But did anybody else besides me think that Penn honestly looked stoned on Saturday? My sincere belief was that he was, I was bustin up laughin, no facial expressions, just lookin around all weird, even when Kenny called him out.

I got the same feeling ha, even my buddies girlfriend (who hates the ganja) was like “That little dude was on pot. I got a good laugh out of the ‘on pot’ part”
Anyways if this fight happens, i gotta give it to Maia. He looked incredible last night. If he takes Bisping down its over, which i think he can. Anywhere else tho Bisping will give him some serious problems.

Agreed! i was 100% expecting Penn to Jump in the Octagon and respond to Kenny “killing the master”. then when he didn’t i figured he wasn’t in the arena! THEN they pan over to him and hes all smiles and stone faced (literally)
hahaha

Exactly man. Also he’s always whinning about steriods but i guess he doesn’t have a problem taking tokes. BJ fans better hope he puts away his bong against GSP:)

Well I’m a huge BJ fan. In his defense it doesnt have the same degree of influence in factors in a fight that steroids does, but it is illegal fair and square, and he knows it so hey…. But anyway, my theory was that, well, im pretty sure ive heard multiple fighters say that although they train all the time just to get better, the actual training for “the next fight” starts at like 2 or 3 months or something before. Anyway, Penn is right about there, so maybe it was a last horaah before the real tough stuff begins.

He looked stoned for sure. Not the first time Ive thought that seeing Penn on tv though.
-IMO Maia would handle Bisping somewhat easily. I would like to see Maia fight Nate at this point. I think that Yushin gets the next shot @ Silva if he beats Lister – and I think that Nate Marquardt and Maia are the top two 185 contenders (with Hendo/Rich taking place @ 205 – and the winner most likely fighting Bisping after a TUF show). Next fights I would like to see are Yushin/Silva – Marquardt/Maia – Palhares/Filho & Reljic/Sonnen once Filho & Sonnen come over.
by efisher on Nov 16, 2008 10:54 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I think Okami needs to fight Silva, then Nate v Maia for number one contender.
by DownUnder on Nov 16, 2008 11:02 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Marquardt vs Maia sounds F’in awesome! Nate could probably keep in stand tho, which wouldnt work out well for Maia IMO..

They will give him Bisping. Because they WILL not give Bisping a well, rounded fighter with GOOD STRIKING skills until they have milked him to death.
Bisping is a decent fighter with good sub defense and decent takedown defense……They already fed him too many wrestlers & BJJ guys like Sinosec, Schafaer, Hammil.
They know he can defend subs and most takedowns….so they will make this look like Bisping is soooooooo good. They will not put him against a FASTER than Leben and good striker…..
So, So , SO MANY fights that he should have at this point in the UFC 9 or 10 fights..AND NO TOP CONTENDERS with ALL AROUND WELL ROUNDED SKILLS…..How about Franklin, Hendo, Marquardt, Kampmann, even McFedries, Kendall Grove, Reljic…..I could name many others……..
The UFC WILL CONTINUE to BABY HIM with very winnable fights in order to get him a title shot. After 9 or 10 fights…..and losing 2, ok 1…..You should be fighting the TOP OF THE DIVISION

Maia is slowly becoming one of my favourite ufc fighters. He’s very, very skilled and I would personally love to see him test his skills against a big name like Bisping. If that fight were to happen I think it’s a 2nd round armbar for Maia.

no way he fights bisping next. bisping will fight the opposite coach on tuf uk vs us. and no way will it be maia. he does deserve a quality opponent. i agree with previous comments nate marquart would be a good candidate. how about thales leites too.
by COR on Nov 17, 2008 12:30 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I like Marquardt, but not Leites. I would love to see Maia tap Bisping, but I agree, it won’t happen next.

I would love to see this fight. Maia is an animal and I’ve been a big fan since he put Ed Herman out…and I mean OUT. He’ll submit Bisping. He looked great last night with how he took Quarry down. He was like a snake that just wrapped around him…As much as I like both fighters last night, I have to ask a question. Did anyone see the kiss on the cheek and then the kiss on the mouth from these two? What the f was up with that?
by Shadyone33 on Nov 17, 2008 12:36 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I saw it too! I’m surprised there hasn’t been more said about it!
I was laughing my head off… very funny… The look on their faces when they realised they had kissed on the lips in front on millions of people was priceless… like… “Shit… did that really just happen?…”

Maia vs Leites is the fight that should go down
by Anthony on Nov 17, 2008 1:28 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
whoever he fights lets just hope they give him a better fight then quarry did.i know he is good on the ground but damn that was just too easy for him.marquart or leites would be ideal for him both good tests to see how good he really is

I think this would be a good fight, but Bisping is a better MMA fighter and being a jujitsu black belt himself he has very good submission defence. I think the fight would be crazy but Bisping would win by TKO in the 2nd.

im surprised no one has mentioned palhares.that would be a jj clinic.

ISn’t Nate Quarry a pretty big 185#? He did not look that much bigger then Maia. I like Maia in this fight and think he has enough of a stand up game to force a takedown or pull guard, sweep, and submit. I absolutly am a die hard Bisping Hater, I will give him some props for his win over Leben but still am always rooting for his comepetitor. I like Maia and have loved watching his transition into MMA and think he will prove to be a great fight for Bisping.
