UFC Quick Quote: Brock Lesnar is opportunistic

"I don't think I deserve anything. I was asked if I wanted a title shot against Randy Couture and I accepted it. I don't think that I deserve anything.... This is an opportunity and I'm going to seize the moment and try and take that title away tomorrow night.... This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I understand that. If there was any other heavyweight in the division that was asked for this opportunity they probably would have also not turned the opportunity down."
-- Brock Lesnar tells ESPNs "First Take" this morning that he is merely taking advantage of an opportunity that was presented to him to challenge Randy Couture for his heavyweight title. With just three professional mixed martial arts bouts to his credit, including an average record inside the Octagon (1-1), several people questioned the decision to grant him a world title shot so soon in his career. But this is a business and UFC President Dana White and all the others at Zuffa know that, deserving or not, Lesnar is going to put butts in seats at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 15. It's good to see Lesnar is under no illusions and that he is shooting straight from the hip. Who can blame him ...he makes a valid point.

I don’t blame him and I’m glad he’s taking the fight. I can’t wait to see it.

he wanted this fight, he’s a competitor! I respect brock a whole lot more than I do Kimbo, he’s got little experience and is fighting his 3rd top opponent! Kimbo is still waiting for his first! I just don’t like his disrespect and moron attitude!

It’s all so true, and actually Brock may prove to be Couture’s biggest challege at HVWT… so while not being the most deserving he could prove to be the most challenging opponent.. I thinking Couture will take it unless brock comes out like Matt Sera VS GSP 1 and Couture falls into that gameplane,,, then he’s got a solid chance of KO’ing Couture… otherwise I like Coutures chances.

Just something about Brock tapping out so quickly when Mir had him in an anklelock tells me he’s great’’ when he’s a frontrunner, but as soon as it gets rough, he softens up like a giant pink baby ready to take a nap.
by THORAZINE on Nov 15, 2008 3:59 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That is really easy to say when you have never trained before. You need to check out some classes and then not tap so quickly like a “giant pink baby” after someone latches in an armbar/leglock.
by Adam on Nov 15, 2008 6:13 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
You have never been heel hooked or toe locked I take it. It takes very little pressure to severely screw your ankle up. Sometimes the damage can be done before you even have a chance to tap the mat.
by Djs3467 on Nov 15, 2008 8:28 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That doesn’t make sense. Watch the fight again he calmly pulls out of Mir’s armbar attempts 2 or 3 times and when Mir gets the footlock #1 it is sunk in real deep. #2 He trys to roll to get out of it. #3 He is in that footlock for nearly 7 seconds. That is a long time to be sitting in a footlock with a guy as big, strong, and versed in submissions like Mir as he torque’s the crap out of your ankle.
by Da Monkey on Nov 15, 2008 8:46 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That’s because his arms are huge and probably very difficult to bar, while his ankles are not much bigger than mine.

yeah i dont personally think anyone can blame brock for taking the ufc up on this opportunity, I just feel there are more deserving guys out there!
i cant believe how small couture looks in comparison, im def goin for brock now, based soley on the sheer size difference and wrestling!!
i hope we get to see kongo v lesnar soon, that guy is one guy i think that could intimidate brock!!

lesnar would demolish kongo… he has no ground game.

I find it pretty annoying when people keep saying that Lesner will destro Kongo. Lesner has not proven anything yet. Tim Sylvia has no ground game at all and he completely dominated Nog in the stand up he was giving Nog a battering until it went to the ground. Kongo is ten times the striker that Sylvia is. What do you think would happen if it was Kongo instead of Sylvia fighting Nog, I have no doubt that Nog would have taken out by strikes from Kongo. On the ground Lesner is better but on the feet nobody has a better chance than Kongo of taking him out. If Nog could nearly lose to Sylvia, I have no doubt that the striking ability of Kongo is more than enough to take out Lesner on his feet. And please do not tell me that Lesner beat Herring who beat Kongo because I will just remind you that Jardine beat Chuck who beat Silva who then went on to beat Jardne. So save it.

nog nearly lost to sylvia? I’m thinking you haven’t seem much from nog heh? he was never going to lose that fight, only ppl that had seen him fight before knew that though, so I don’t blame you for thinking this way :)
by compadre on Nov 15, 2008 5:39 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I have seen him fight before, I do not know why you think I haven’t. I know how tough he is and know that he can take a lot of punishment the Bob Sapp fight is a good example of that. I am not a Tim Sylvia fan, never have been but the bottom line is Tim was destroying him in the stand up, and if Tim was a bit more aggresive and went in for the finish a few times when he had Nog in trouble with those strikes, he could have finished it. But Tim always likes to play it safe, never get more aggressive than he needs to and doen’t take any chances and is happy to go for a descision, and that is the same for that majority of his last fights Monson, Arlovski and Vera. Kong is nothing like that, if sees you are in trouble he goes in for the kill. So I am saying that if Kongo had Nog in as much trouble as Tim did in the stand up, and as far as I am concerned he was in a lot of trouble before it went to the ground, Kongo would have finished it.

I have already replied to this but just case there is a delay here is a shorer response.
I have seen Nog fight before and know how tough he is and the punishment he can take,a good example is the Bob Sapp fight. I am not a fan of Sylvia, but he was destroying Nog in the stand up and as far as I am concerned had him in some serious trouble. If Tim was more aggresive did not always play it safe, took a few more chances and actually tried to finish the fight when he had Nog in trouble rather than go for the descision like he always does, then he could have won it.Kongo in the same situation would not have made that mistake
by Ade on Nov 15, 2008 9:06 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Sylvia hurts him for a few minutes, and though he won in the stand in the first, Nog does well in the second and even better in the 3rd. Other then the first round Tim is not all that dominating. And as soon as he hits his back, he is like a fish outta water with Nog.
Lesnars power and overall strength will be to much for even Kongo. Yeah he may have the best chance size wise and but he has no ground game. When he ends up on his back with 270#‘s of superior wrestling on top of him he will lose as well. Brock is not only strong and a good wrestler, he is as explosive and as fast as the 170#’s. He will prove to be to much for Kongo. The only thing he has that matches besides the striking is that he is 6’4" to Brocks 6’3" but even he is giving up close to 40#s at the time of the fight. Kongo fights usually at 240, so he is not cutting. Brock is cutting to 265 and after rehydrating and eating he probably is coming in at 280. He will prove to be to much.

if you want to go by that, then look at teh Nog vs Herring fight. Herring almost knocked nog out, came a lot closer than Silvia. Look what brock did to Herring.

And even though he hasn’t paid his dues experience wise like some guys have he is the favourite, not many guys could have a record of 2-1 and be the favourite to beat the champion. And even though id of liked to have seen him have a few more fights/wins before a title shot I guess if you have the skills to beat the champ you deserve a title shot?
by Stefan Manojlovic on Nov 15, 2008 1:12 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If you really thing that Brock is going to win, then you should give up your hopes of seeing Brock vs Kongo anytime soon. If brock wins, his next fight will be the winner of Mir and Nog. If he were to ever win that fight, then say bye to the Kongo fight for a long time because Kongo is nowhere near title contention. Even if Brock where to fight Kongo, I doubt that he would fear him. Brock could easily bring Kongo to the ground and be dominant there.

Are you serious?? you think size and wwe skills are going to defeat years and years of martial arts training.. haha!!! good luck brock all i can say.. oh and dont forget experience… courture has been in the octagon before lesnar was born haha…

Lesanr has the power of the penis on his side. That alone will take care of Handy.
by prophet on Nov 15, 2008 12:34 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I agree with you that if he gets kongo to the ground which he def has the skills to do he would dominate him there. However I feel Kongo has the striking ability to really make lesnar think twice before shooting in?! Just my opinion, i really like Kongo, and I dont think his ground game is all that bad? I actually thought he done ok from the bottom again HH?
I not saying hes great and thaf brock got him down hed easily get back to his feet!!
in terms of reach and physical attributes Kongo is the one heavyweight i feel that could really cause brock problems, all be it if he beats couture its a far off in the distance fight!!

Lesnar is going to win. I just don’t see a 45 year old, 220 pound guy beating a 265 pound freight train and yes, even if his name is Randy Couture.
Not only will Lesnar have the advantage in size, but he also has the edge in wrestling, speed, strength, athleticism, and (I know many will disagree), but I think cardio endurance as well. The cardio regimen that Brock is put through is identical to Sean Sherk’s, plus the simple fact that Randy has to push around 275 pounds (come fight time) whereas Brock has to push around 225 gives Brock a huge cardio advantage.
It should be an entertaining fight but Brock will be the new heavy weight champ. If Randy wins – I’ll be shocked.

How is Lesnar going to respond when he is hit and his at least immediate demolition derby plans on Couture intiially frustrated. I’m certain Couture will at least bring that (he will hit Brock and he won’t be put away early) and I’m curious to see how Lesnar responds to a little adversity. That will be the true test of wether he is mma champion material. This will not be an easy win for Brock, he’s going to have to work hard to get it, the question is, just how much game does he have?
This is a great fight and I’m not complaining at all about Brock getting a quick shot. You’ve got to give him credit for the caliber of his first three opponents at the very least. Hope Randy can seriously test his chin/mettle. It’s gonna be great.
by Revjames13 on Nov 15, 2008 4:58 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Lesner has not taken any strikes whatsoever no leg kicks anything. He has not been truly tested. Until I see him prove himself and have seen him fully tested I am not going to get myself overly excited about him. He could end up being the UFC equivilent of K1’s Semi Schilt, who admittedly has vastly improved, but because of his sheer size and power even though there are K1 fighters who have ten times more skill than him, are just not able unable to beat him. It is a good thing that in MMA gives you more options of beating an opponent because with K1 you really do not see anybody beating Schilt anytime soon, which really does make his fight pretty unexciting.

Brock by a “Triple Decker Pecker Wrecker”. You have to watch the video to understand:

That is the funniest video I have seen in a long time. I almost fell off of my seat laughing several times.

The video came out about a year ago or so, but I had forgotten about it until butter teeth made the “penis lock” comment and it reminded me about the “Triple Decker Pecker Wrecker” submission and this video.
The guys that made it really did a great job – when I first saw it – way before the real UFC 75, I thought it was real for the first 30 seconds then laughed my ass off for the next few minutes. Funny stuff for those who hadn’t seen it before and I was still laughing today when I watched it again!

Kongo is a bum you say his striking is amazing, name one good fighter he has faught? cro cop? no way he’s no as good as everyone says thats it kongo is no good just in great shape and nog well hes a different type of fighter he takes a beating and gets that chance and takes advantage of it. As far as lesner is concerned lesner lost a fight that should have never gone that far it was the ref’s fault he didn’t give him a arning he stood them up and brock got caught e showed the world how powerful he is you can’t armbar him or choke him only one way and thats the legs…lol i take brock second round

A lot of people say that Brock did not deserve to fight Randy for the championship. But when Randy came back, who else would he have fought? Nog and Mir were already involved in TUF and had a fight scheduled in December. Randy had already beaten Gonzaga and Tim Sylvia. Randy could have fought Verdum or Kongo. But the UFC imagined the profit potential of Randy vs. Lesnar, Kongo or Verdum, and the answer was obvious.
by DrPepper on Nov 15, 2008 9:42 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Being the business man that he is, Randy probably wanted Lesnar for the big money fight as well.

“If Nog could nearly lose to Sylvia, I have no doubt that the striking ability of Kongo is more than enough to take out Lesner on his feet.”
That makes no sense at all. Nog is not Lesnar, Sylvia is not Kongo, worst logic ever.
As for whether he deserves this shot or not. Well did Couture deserve his first title shot after only 3 pro fights?

Personally, I think Brock will make the fight look easy. I would LOVE (love, love) to see Couture out-wit Lesnar, because I am a big fan of Captain America. But this time out… I think Couture has met a guy who will finish him.

Brock sucks – doesn’t deserve the title!! Randy already had issues with the UFC, I don’t think Randy is sad that he lost the title. Randy is now off to bigger and better things just as he wanted like building Affliction.
