UFC Quick Quote: Wanderlei Silva vs Forrest Griffin fight would be 'sad situation'

"... is a very, very good opportunity for me for me to fight for the title. I think after I beat Rampage, it may be possible I fight with the champion.... I train and spar with Forrest, I am his best sparring partner and he is mine. It is sad situation, to train with some guys it is possible I will have to fight in the future, but it is no problem. I am a professional and he is a professional. I like him, he is a very nice guy. Outside the Octagon, I am his friend, but inside the Octagon it is a business, a job."
-- Former Pride FC middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva tells Fighters Only magazine that he could earn a title shot with a win over Quinton "Rampage" Jackson at UFC 92: "The Ultimate 2008" on December 27. It will be their third fight -- "The Axe Murderer" won the first two back in Japan. Undefeated light heavyweights Lyoto Machida and Thiago Silva are set to collide about at UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2" on January 31, meaning Silva -- who just snapped a three-fight losing skid with a first round knockout of Keith Jardine at UFC 84: "Ill Will" back in May -- would leapfrog the winner of that match as the number one contender. In addition, Griffin would have to successfully defend his 205-pound belt against Rashad Evans on New Year's Eve weekend, too. In short, it seems like a lot of things need to happen for Silva to get the next crack at the belt. But ya' never know ...

Whoa, Mania!! Way to mislead with the caption. lol. But, yeah, I agree, if they fought, it would be the sad situation you alluded to, not so much the one referred to by Silva.

Right? I thought the quote was going to be about Wandy ranting about how he would KILL Forrest if they fought leaving him severely wounded laying on the octagon canvas as half the crowd cried their little eyes away.

Guys, you should all check out the complete interview where wandy makes these comments. Its a really good read. I posted it late yesterday in the Amir thread (I think). 2 threads ago
Wandy is the man. I wont be rooting for Page or Wandy. I just cant choose 1 over the other

This division seems to be stacked. Anyone have any predictions as to who will hold the title in a year from now? And how many times will it have switched hands by then?
by chefdaddy on Nov 12, 2008 10:16 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Anderson, after Forrest beats Rashad, then loses to Wandi.

chefdaddy, imo Luis cane will be the UFC’s LHW champ by this time next year. And my prediction on how many times it will change hands next year? maybe 3.
I think Anderson Silva will hold it before he retires..I hope anyways..

Thank for the link John, I read the interview this morning.
I will be rooting for Wandy for sure. I would LOVE to see a nice, long interview of Rampage a day or two before this fight. That would be the best indicator that I can think of that would help me decide how much money to throw on this fight. If he still isn’t 100% back mentally, he can be in trouble again against Wandy. The Rampage we saw up until the Forrest fight would have been a considerable favorite against Wandy, or at least in my eyes. If it wasn’t for his truck rampage, my money would be on Jackson. But considering everything, right now I plan on putting my money on Wanderlei.

After his incident, I think Rampage needs an easier transition nack into the octagon than Wandy. Maybe bring back Sausage Tits Lambert for a fight before sending him on his way.

That’s what I’m saying!
Don’t put a mentally and emotionally fragile person in a locked cage against somone that has already given him his 2 most brutal defeats????
Don;t be surprised to see Rampage pull a “Paulo Filho” in his fight with Wanderlei and not even know what is going on at times and not even knowing when he is and isn’t in a fight. Remember, you heard that one first right here!

Wand will win rampage stands no chance. For someone with all this supposed power, he couldn’t knock forrest out, while herky jerky jardine did. Wand would put forrest down for sure.

Vm and PW make great points. I just hate to see one of these guys loose.
I need to see the weigh ins before betting or predicting. Rampage was fat against Forrest. If he comes into this fight Shredded like he was against Hendo, then Wandy is in trouble.

If Wanderlei beats Rampage, he’ll get the title shot. People would rather see Wanderlei vs. Evans or Griffin than Machida or Thiago Silva vs. Evans or Griffin. Actually, I think whoever wins the Rampage/Wanderlei fight will get the next shot. If Griffin and Rampage win, you know they’ll market the hell out of that rematch.
I’m a huge Wanderlei fan, so I really hope he wins and gets a shot.

I hope Wanderlei gets a shot too! I wanted to see my boy Chuck in there but since he got KO’d by Rashad I’m not sure if he can ever make it back to the top. Wanderlei is my only hope now!….I like Forrest as champ also, but boy would I love to see Wanderlei vs. Rashad….talk about an interesting fight, or Rmapage/Rashad Rampage/Forrest rematch…all kinds of good matchups at LHW to take place. Has anyone heard who Chuck will be fighting in March/April? I heard rumors of A. Silva at LHW, but I highly doubt that, I’m thinking Luis Cane, Houston Alexander, Soko would be good matchups for Chuck, will be ineresting to see who the UFC puts him up against after a severe KO loss like that.

the sad situation is that the mega fight that was pumped up for 4 years between the iceman and the axe murderer has vanished and it seems people have forgotten that the iceman nailed the axe murderer – where is he now, why is chuck not in title contention? so what if he got KO’d by rashad – Forrest cried like a bitch after getting KTFO – but he still got a premature shot. If one day silva gets the title, which i hope he does – he will get a beating by the iceman one more time – which i hope he will.

Because Chuck got KO’d in his most recent fight. This sport is all about “what have you done lately”. And lately, Chuck has been getting KO’d and losing decisions.

I wouldn’t put much stock in Wandi vs Chuck 1, was a great fight, but Wanderlei seemed like he was more concerned with putting on a show than winning the fight. A rematch would go differently imo.

There are two sides to this situation, but I still call BS.
While Wanderlei Silva is one of my all-time favourite fighters, there is no way he deserves any kind of title shot in the UFC based on his recent performances. Both Machida and Thiago Silva are more deserving, even with one loss on their records.
However, it’s all about the $$$, and Wand in a PPV title fight means big dollars. Plus, it would be a very exciting match. In my head I’d know it’s wrong, but in my heart it would be awesome.
by Graham on Nov 12, 2008 9:34 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Thiago Silva has YET to face a Top 20 opponent in his career. Machida is by far his biggest fight. And everyone gets on Machida’s case complaining about his quality of competition. Well, look at their two records both in and out of the UFC. Machida has fought 10 times the competition Silva has.
Seriously, 80% of you didn’t even know who Thiago Silva was prior to him beating Houston Alexander who at that time that same 80% of you thought Houston would be the next champ. (Even thought it wasn’t Thiago’s first UFC fight…)
by ViolentMike on Nov 12, 2008 10:55 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Talk about Top 20, Top 10, etc. is a problem because there is no unified ranking system. But, I think that generally, you are correct in saying that Machida has had the better opposition. But all either fighter has done is win. You can’t criticize that.
I am using the “what have you done for me lately” school of thought. Wanderlei, as much as I’m a fan, really hasn’t done much that’s been successful lately. He’s 5-5 in his last 10 fights going back to the Mark Hunt debacle at the end of 2004.
Now, as for your Houston Alexander comment, he was my man-crush for a while, but I had absolutely no illusions about him beating T. Silva. I didn’t get to see the fight anyways because I was on my honeymoon, but I knew what the outcome would be.
by Graham on Nov 12, 2008 11:19 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
VM, you are spot on with the 80% call. Prior to that fight, almost everyone on here was claiming Chuck would be an underdog to Houston. I thought then and still think that Houston is tailor made for Chuck. It’s like putting a ball on a tee for Albert Pujols.
I wonder if Machida’s chance at getting a title shot are affected by Anderson Silva. Don’t they train together? Would Anderson fight Lyoto? If Anderson is going to be in the LHW title picture, could that screw Lyoto because he isn’t marketable and Anderson is?
by Sacto on Nov 12, 2008 11:29 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Graham, you are right, this sport is all about “what have you done lately” (which is a conincidently a phrase I just use moments ago). But in title fights, marketability is always considered.
Sacto, Machida and Anderson train together and both have said that they would not fight each other.

One thing is for sure, this fight WILL end in a KO unlike Wanderlei/Iceman…..I just think Rampage will be the one KO’d in my opinion which is strange because I think Rampage has the better jaw of the two…

jon, rampage lost to forrest who trains at the same camp as wandy. with those two having the same training, wandy or forrest? which one has a bigger chin, which one is a more proven fighter, which fighter has an all-aroundbetter style and technique? when this fight was first announced I thought it was rampages, but as i broke it down to bet, all signs really do point to wandy. but then again what do i know,i had page drilling forrest. wandy is getting older but i just can’t see him slipping that much. plus i haven’t been impressed with rampages new camp.

I am sorry Forrest fans, but Forrest Griffin is by far the weakest champion in the UFC and it’s funny that the light heavyweight division is the strongest in the UFC. Maybe I am missing something, but to me he is just the people’s champion. He beat an out-of-shape, in fact, terrible version of Shogun and then IMO didnt really beat Rampage. He might’ve won a controversial decision, but you are supposed to beat the champ to get thhe belt. Not eak out a victory which he did. Am I the only one that thinks that Forrest isnt as good as he is made out to be. He is the champion, but in my mind he is not even close to being the #1 Light Heavyweight fighter in the world (which he is ranked as).
by horny for mma on Nov 12, 2008 10:28 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
He submitted arguably the #1 LHW at the time and beat the actual #1 LHW at the time. STFU and deal with it! After he beats Rashad you will still talk sh*t, hater. BTW, change you horrible name, it just grosses me out everytime I read it.

Also, soooooooooo many people here complain that they don’t want Machida to be champ because he does not finish fights. And you know what, these are the same people that swing from Forrest’s nuts as if his testacles were a jungle gym.
HOWEVER, Forrest Griffin has only finished 1 of his last 6 fights and that was against a fat Shogun with 5 seconds left on the clock.
Also, Machida only has 1 finish in his last 6 fights, but he WON all of those 6 fights. Forrest has lost 2 of his last 6 fights.

to be the man you have to beat the man, and he did it TWICE deal with it bro, his losses are jardine (ranked in the top10) and tito ortiz (fight he was actually winning and should have won) machida hasnt lost but also has really not fought the greatest fighters ever forrest wanted the tito fight when tito was considered still good, and wanted shogun when noone else did.. why isnt he #1 in the world in your eyes? who deserves it more?
by randy murders on Nov 12, 2008 11:17 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Forrest has faced better competition. And until Machida fights and beats Forrest, Forrest is #1. If anybody becomes champ then I say they deserve it. Except for Machida. First of all I don’t think he will get past Thiago. Second if he does get the belt it is only because Anderson is allowing him to have the belt, period.

I’ll make it simple for everyone. There are 6-8 LHW’s who are roughly equal and are all capable of besting each other in any given fight. The belt will likely not stay in one place for a lengthy period of time.
by CL on Nov 12, 2008 12:32 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Forrest seems to polarize people as a champion. It wasn’t his fault Shogun was injured. And in MMA, you don’t have to dominate the champ to take his title. That’s boxing. IMO, he isn’t one of the strongest division champs at all. BUT, he consistently is proving people wrong. So I will give him time. If he gets by Rashad. Great. But after Evans, that’ll be the fight to say whether (according to fans) he deserves to hold the belt. I happen to like the guy, and would love for him to go on an unimagineable tear, defeating guys we would NEVER dream he could.

ha, sorry to upset you so much BNF. I am just stating my opinion. Saying that Forrest beat arguable the #1 LHW fighter in the world at the time is like saying that Chael Sonnen beat arguable the #1 or #2 Middlewight in the world. There is no argument from me that Shogun was at one point one of, if not the best LHW in the world, but he was absolutely awful against Forrest. Almost anybody in the top 15 LHW at the time wouldve beaten Shogun like Forrest did. Forrest jsut happened to be in the right fight at the right time. In terms of beating Rampage… Forrest had an excellent game plan. I have watched the fight several times and I think the decision couldve gone either way. I think Forrest is a top 10 LHW fighter, but no where near #1. He is a comparable fighter to a Keith jardine. I am not arguing that he is the current LHW champion, I am jsut simply stating that he is not even close to the #1 LHW in the world! Also, not a hater..actually a fan of Forrest, believe it or not!

But i think the judges scored the rounds really close. rampage has himself to blame for not finishing him when he knocked him down. that was actually the only real offense rampage had, throwing bombs. he won that facet of the fight but i thought he got tooled by forrest in every other facet. as powerful as page is i thought forrest beat him at the ground game. he really had rampage off balance and looking confused.

Sorry to sound argumentative, I just get sick of people always talking sh*t about him. I don’t know what else the guy has to do to prove himself. I have done the Shogun and Rampage argument 1000 times and I don’t want to get into it again. The bottom line is he won and has the belt in the UFC LHW division. That doesn’t happen by accident. I know after he beats Rashad, people will still not give him his due because Rashad is just a TUF winner. It sucks!

BNF. i got your back. it’s insane that some “fans” will not give forrest his due no matter what. forrest is the epitome of what a mma fighter should be. nobody trains harder, has a bigger heart, puts it all on the line every fight(cept ramirez) and conducts himself in an honarable way outside the cage (unlike Road-Page). the people that hate on him always will and there is nothing that you can do to change there minds. it’s all just a bunch of fanboy crap.

Machida is the #1 fighter in the world at LHW and he will continue to prove it those who are not believers. I have said this since before his fight with Sokodjujujujujuujjjwuwuuw. He might not be the most exciting to watch, but how can you not appreciate his mental toughness, skills and gameplans.

to be a contender you have to beat a contender, not the bottom half of the division by decision.

I wouldnt call him a fighter. Have you ever seen him fight? I just watch him run around and throw a slap here and there, just enough to out point his opponent. go back to karate Danielson!

I agree with alot of other ppl here , I see Rampage putting Wandy away pretty fast , should setup Griffin vs Rampage II .. Which should have happened immediatley after the first shit (deciscion) fight.

What people tend to forgetor not know is that Machida holds victories over three UFC Champions, including BJ Penn and Rich Franklin.

Easy solution, if W. Silva wins, he fights winner of T. Silva/Machida, winner of that fight fights winner of Evans/Griffin. I bet $20 on Rampage against Forrest and handed over my money before the decision was even read. Rampage did not win that fight. W. Silva is my favorite fighter, but it would be B.S if he jumped Machida for the title shot. I know most of you hate Machida, but he is the #1 light heavyweight in my opinion. By the way, why all the hate for Machida? All of you say his fights are boring. Obviously you didn’t see him dismantle Ortiz. That was a sweet fight. The guy fights to win. This sport is all about “who is the best fighter in the world” at each weight class. I want to know who the best is, not who can sell the most PPV’s. Stop hatin’

Like I said before, Wand is my favorite fighter while Rampage is one of my least favorites. I still believe that Rampage will win this one. Fighting in America and the octagon both favor Rampage even though he’s lost twice to Silva. Machida will beat T. Silva, because he’s defeated tons of very talented fighters ( Franklin,Bonnar,Penn,Ortiz,Sokojou.) Rampage should then fight Machida, Machida will win, Machida fights winner of Griffin/Evans which I believe will be Griffin, Machida then fights Griffin and wins. By this time Anderson Silva has earned a shot at the 205 title, but won’t fight Machida and will retire at this time. If they were to fight, Anderson would win.

There isn’t much reason to speculate on that, Rashad will most likely be champ
