UFC Fight Night 16: 'Fight for the Troops' bouts confirmed for Dec. 10

Spike TV today confirmed the complete line up for UFC Fight Night 16: "Fight for the Troops," which is scheduled to take place at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, N.C., on Wednesday, December 10.
As expected, Josh Koscheck will headline the three-hour Spike TV special against Yoshiyuki Yoshida. There was some concern that "Kos" would be unable to battle "Zenko" after losing a tough unanimous decision to Thiago Alves at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" on October 25.
Fortunately, the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) product is apparently good to go … and very game.
Here is the complete UFC Fight Night 16 fight card:
Main event:
170 lbs.: Josh Koscheck (11-2) vs. Yoshiyuki "Zenko" Yoshida (10-2)
Main card (Televised):
170 lbs.: Mike Swick (12-2) vs. Jonathan Goulet (22-9)
205 lbs.: Steve Cantwell (6-1) vs. Razak Al-Hussan (5-0)
170 lbs.: Nate Loughran (9-0) vs. Tim Credeur (10-2)
155 lbs.: Frank Edgar (9-1) vs. Matt Wiman (10-3)Under card (May not be broadcast):
170 lbs.: Luigi Fioravanti (13-4) vs. Brodie Farber (13-4)
170 lbs.: Steve Bruno (11-4) vs. Johnny Rees (10-1)
170 lbs.: Ben Saunders (6-0-2) vs. Brandon Wolff (7-2)
155 lbs.: Dale Hartt (5-1) vs. Corey Hill (2-1)
265 lbs.: Eddie Sanchez (8-2) vs. Justin McCully (8-4-2)
UFC Fight Night 16: "Fight for the Troops" will begin to air at 8 p.m. ET on Spike TV on fight night.
Keep in mind that the special event is designed to raise funds for the construction of The National Intrepid Center of Excellence, a treatment center for Armed Forces personnel who have experienced traumatic brain injuries.
Therefore, donations are accepted and encouraged online at www.fallenheroesfund.org or by calling 1-800-340-HERO.

Free or not, worst fight card. Ever.

And you decided that on what basis? I tend to judge how good a card is by watching it first.

personally i always hated kos but after he took that alves fight on short notice and hearing what he had to say in the post fight and now him still taking this fight, i have gained quite a lot of respect for him, i’m not sure if i like his personality but i really respect him as a fighter now, i think he’ll take this one by UD

Agreed. I hope he wins this one. The fight with Alves will motivate him. He still showed a great deal of heart out there against Alves.

THe UFC should have matched up Ben Saunders vs. Tim Crueder and put that fight on the main card!
Anytime Goulet is being televised, the card is WEAK!!!!

Wake me up when Swick/Goulet is OVER!!!!!
by the way, koschek is getting SUBMITTED!!!!
by john on Nov 10, 2008 3:52 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
lol, whats the beef with Goulet? (just curious) his last fight at 83 was awesome, thats a good match up right there with Swick I think you might be selling this one short.
by O damn he got caught on Nov 10, 2008 4:14 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I will admit his last fight was entertaining, but other then that I hate th4e guy. I guess I cant get the image out of my head when Bang Ludwig KO’ed him in like 2 seconds.
my beef isnt just with Goulet, I think Swick is TRASH also! “Swicking out” give me a break with that ineffective BS!!!!
I know which fight I will be rolling blunts during!
by john on Nov 10, 2008 4:24 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
lmao, yea swicking out, the swickatine, the swick attack got a little old. But I don’t hold the Ludwig KO against Goulet, that was just bad luck/bad gameplan running in on Duane like that; and at least at the end of the fight he was like “Yea, it was a good stoppage, I got tagged” unlike Houston Alexander in the Irvin fight shaking his head and acting like he had no idea why the fight was stopped.

I just hope Yoshida doesn’t get screwed again. It’s his time to shine in the top 5 at WW.

I’m with you on the respect wagon hughes. But still, I’ll take on Zenko’s side.

I am another one who could not stand that cocky wanker Koscheck and his attitude, and I have never really had anything good to say about him, but as with quite a few it seems, his performance in the Alves fight gave me a lot more respect for him especially taking it on such short notice. I cannot wait for him and Diego to go at it again. I am a Diego fan, but Koschecks performance against Alves made me think that Diego is not going to have it as easy with Koscheck as I thought he would, but I still think his cardio his relentless attacking will break Koscheck down. I will never be a fan of Koschecks but he really did well in the Alves fight.

I hated Koscheck forever and must say that he has become an exciting fighter. He is one of the best guys out there right now. He has consistently gotten better in all of his fights. He went from a lay-n-pray specialist to a consistent fight of the night contestant.
So is Steve Cantwell the first to make the move from WEC to UFC , now that they are getting rid of the 205s? He will be fun to watch, he has a lot of raw talent and with the right camp could make some waves.
by Da Monkey on Nov 11, 2008 8:00 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
They need to stop putting him in the cage w/ chumps, and then maybe we can talk about a title shot for him.
by LJ on Nov 10, 2008 6:02 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, agreed Syd. Swick has done NOTHING to deserve a title shot. Love Marcus Davis so I’ll give him respect for beating him, but that was not a convincing win considering Marcus had a torn shoulder.

sarcasm? irony? humor? Cuz I know you can’t be serious.

Swick vs Goulet, Edgar vs Wiman and Kos vs Yoshida all have potential to be great fights. I can’t stand Ben Saunders myself so I’ll watch the prelim afterward hoping he loses and someone wipes that stupid smile off his face. The only useless fight on the card is Eddie Sanchez vs Justin Mccully, hands down the two worst fighters under contract with the UFC, I can’t think of a combined lack of skill being put together in any other match up. I’d rather watch 2 kids with down syndrome play 5 minute chess..
by O damn he got caught on Nov 10, 2008 3:27 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
id rather watch 2 retarded kids in a booger eating contest than watch Can-chez vs Mc-lully……..
by b.w. on Nov 10, 2008 3:32 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
And actually I’m interested in seeing the Corey Hill fight when the prelims air, this guy had a lot of natural talent and at 155 that reach advantage is huge.
by O damn he got caught on Nov 10, 2008 3:39 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Haven’t seen Hill fight since TUF, where he was less than impressive. But, he was inexperienced at the time, so I’ll cut him some slack. I just hope he has learned not to have his hands down by his waist when he boxes.

I thought UFC would want people to tune in so they donate money. They’re not gonna attract any doners with that fight card.

biggest win in Frankie Edgar? over Hermes Franca? what about wins over Tyson Friffin, and Fisher?

Worst fight card ever? This card is good. Edgar-Wiman is gonna be good, and Yoshida is no joke. Plus, Swick-Goulet should be solid, especially with some fallout from this matchup possibly happening last year, with Goulet talking some smack. At least this card is headlined by legitimate fighters and not frauds like Kimbo Slice.

this is a good fight card koscheck/yoshida will be good swick/goulet stand up war and wiman/edgar possible fight of the night

my picks
koscheck via UD
edgar viad UD
swick via TKO round 2
by liamd on Nov 10, 2008 1:39 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I got Kos by rd 3 TKO, but I wouldn’t doubt a UD.
I agree with the Swick TKO, should be a good fight, possible FotN, if Edgar/Wiman weren’t on the card.
With that fight, I’m going with the upset and picking Wiman by Submission. I like a lot of the TUF 5 guys and want to see Wiman, Gray, Joe, Cole, and Nate do well.
But as for the fight itself, I think that Wiman could score on the feet well enough to force Frankie to take it to the ground. I can see Wiman sprawling well, and then taking his back and locking the choke. Frankie has a good chance to win this, but only by a 29-28 decison.
As for the rest, give me Hussan, Creduer, and Ben (why isn’t he on the main card over Hussan/cantwell?)
And Brodie/Luigi fight could be a good one as well. Pretty solid event.

I want the odds on the swick vs goulet fight, I’ll put some money down on Goulet with his freaky wierd eye if he’s a big underdog.

oh eddie sanchez vs justin mccully these must be there up and coming hw’s
by roy on Nov 10, 2008 1:41 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
oh, i think valasquez, dos santos and carwin are the up and comers that people are referring to. Sanchez vs McCully is a joke though.
by b.w. on Nov 10, 2008 3:39 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
velasquez i can see, carwin is good but he is up there in age and needs to make a move now, get him fighting some tougher people and we will see where he is at.dos santos don’t get ahead of yourself yet he has a great knock out over a top hw but still have not seen enough of him to know where he is at i.e. houston soko and others.

For the love of God, why isn’t the Eddie Can-chez vs. The Insain 1 being televised??!!!?!!!
by PW on Nov 10, 2008 1:48 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I actually laughed out loud when I saw that match-up. That is on of the most insignifigent fights in recent memory.
by BNF on Nov 10, 2008 1:52 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Hopefully the fight will end in a draw, then they can flip a coin to see who gets the privelidge of dropping down to 205 and fight Elvis Sinosic in the 2nd least signifigant fight in UFC history!

Because no one cares when two gatekeepers fight each other. The only interesting thing about this is it is probably an elimination match. Loser loses their contract.
by EazyEismydad on Nov 10, 2008 2:39 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
neither one of them is close gate keeper status,in there wildest dreams could they reach that level.
by roy on Nov 10, 2008 3:11 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
You got that right Roy. Either one of them would need about three wins in a row to become a gatekeeper. And if I remember right credit for Can-chez has to go to ViolentMike.

koscheck is tough as hell how can he be ready to go so soon after the brutal alves fight
iv always thought hed get the title at some point… been derailed twice
once by GSP and then even worse by alves
hope he gets back on the title hunt as he would be a great champion and would happily defend 5 or 6 times per year
by bigjohn on Nov 10, 2008 1:54 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Unlike GSP who is tired and needs time off. I guess 3 fights a year is to much! and i’m a fan of his.

i bet all you peopl whining about this card are going to be on hear as soon as this event is over saying how exciting it was, have u seen koschecks last three fights all exciting, frankie edgar/matt wiman have either of them been in a boring fight? i dont think so, swick/goulet they are going to throw down as there is some bad blood between those two, and the other two main card fights i dont really know much about the competitors but personally i dont think they belong on the main card, i know cantwell was suppose to fight stann before he got hurt and that would be a legimate main card fight but shit happens.
by matt on Nov 10, 2008 2:58 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
It’s always interesting to see a fighter coming back from a loss. Sometimes they are boring since they try to fight “safe” or sometimes they are freaking exciting cause they’re pissed! As an MMA fan I can neve complain of a card specially if it’s free. Viva la MMA!
