Nate Quarry expects UFC 91 fight against Demian Maia to end early

Props: Seattle Post Intelligencer

Quoteworthy:

"He's just a great fighter. All of his fights, he's just looking to finish the whole time. He brings that definite Jiu Jitsu coming at you, gotta tap him out, gotta be working the whole time attitude. I really respect everything he's done. All his accomplishments in Jiu Jitsu and being undefeated in his fighting career. I think it makes for an exciting fight, especially for the fans. Nobody really wants to see decisions. They want to see the fights end and that's what both of us are going to try to do."

Nate Quarry discusses his upcoming middleweight bout against undefeated Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Demian Maia at UFC 91: "Couture vs. Lesnar" at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 15. "The Rock" will be out to notch his third consecutive win since returning from major back surgery little more than one year ago. On the flip side, Maia — a 2007 Abu Dhabi tournament winner — has won all three of his 185-pound fights inside the Octagon since his debut with the promotion in October 2007, earning "Submission of the Night" honors each time out. If he were to make it four straight he's likely set a record if he hasn't already.

if he can land an early big shot he will win…the second it hits the ground, it’s over

If you’re to believe wand, maia is hard to put down with strikes. I think it’ll be a shorter version of Quarry’s fight with Ximu Machado.

Maia didnt really show bad@ss JJ! How many subs did he have McDonald in before he finally got a tap? I hope Nate knocks him out!

I read your other post and took a look! Thanks for the info! I guess shes not as shy as she makes herself out to be? She might be an undercover lesbo?

I’m impressed! I like the one where she’s doing pushups!

Is it just me or does he look a little like sean sherk ?

This is a solid fight. Maia has become one of my favorite fighters to watch because I find his advanced jits to be a thing of Beauty. I really hope he can beat Nate so that Maia can continue to move up the ranks. With Wanderlei working on his striking, expect his stand up to look much improved from 1 fight to the next!

by john on Nov 10, 2008 4:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

This is the fight I am looking forward to most, besides the main event. And I was also wondering if Maia will try to bang for a little since Wandi has been helping him out. Might not be the best idea because Nate might just knock his a$$ out. I like both guys so I just hope for a good fight. Nate has never been submitted, but I doubt he has fought anybody with the level of jits Maia has.

by BNF on Nov 10, 2008 4:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No way his striking has caught up to Nate yet, he’ll go to the ground for sure if he doesn’t want to get KO’d. I got Nate in this fight; you can’t tap a rock.

WAR QUARRY

by O damn he got caught on Nov 10, 2008 4:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Maia can’t tap Quarry if he can’t get him to the ground, and I don’t think he will. Quarry by UD when he keeps telling Maia to get up.

by PW on Nov 10, 2008 5:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t particularly find Quarry’s striking to be advanced. He has a lot of power but not that technical. I forsee Maia go for a single leg and if quarry defends well, then pull guard from the clinch for a triangle; otherwise RNC.

by NameNotRequired on Nov 11, 2008 2:03 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

if this fight ends early, it will be by maia.

by b.w. on Nov 10, 2008 4:27 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

i agree with you on that.

by roy on Nov 10, 2008 4:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

give him hell nate. i love nates fighting.

by the still operator on Nov 10, 2008 4:42 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Its always the same, a new brazilian with good BJJ comes into the UFC and everyone says hes the best and that hes gonna take the belt blablablabla. Maia is overrated, so is Palhares, Almeida etc etc
They all get stopped eventually.

Quarry by KO 4 seconds into the 1st rnd.

by wow on Nov 10, 2008 4:45 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Quarry has not been that great. he looked good against pete sell, but that’s pete sell. maia via sub some time in the second half of the first round.

by James S on Nov 10, 2008 4:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Quarry also showed his conditioning while he was running after starnes

by onthebutton on Nov 10, 2008 4:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

LMFAO!!!!!!!!!

by The_Cannibal on Nov 10, 2008 5:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

plus maia does have better stand-up than palhares and almeida. maia is the most well-rounded of the 3.

by b.w. on Nov 10, 2008 4:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

James S, Maia didnt look that good against McDonald either! How long did it take him to finally submitt McDonald?

by JV on Nov 10, 2008 5:08 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

True JV, but you have to credit some of that to the resilience of MacDonald during that fight. He was doing a very good job of defending. Maia is pretty bad a$$, but I don’t know how anyone cannot like The Rock. Tough fight to call…

by BNF on Nov 10, 2008 5:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

you’re right, but mc donald has a better ground game then Quarry. McDonald defended a lot of sub attempts thet i don’t believe quarry can defend. I don’t know what it is, but since his back surgery quarry’s mobility seems limited.

by James S on Nov 10, 2008 5:15 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yea, it will be a tough fight to call! But all these guys have to do is get submission defense! (see Hendo/Palhares) So as long as Nate can keep the fight standing, it should be his to win?

by JV on Nov 10, 2008 5:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i agree with that. If it stays standing, nate has the power on his side.

by James S on Nov 10, 2008 5:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

McDonald is very well versed in submissions. HE has 17 submission wins out of 21 fights, all ranging from chokes, to heel hooks and key locks. The hardest guys to submit are submission guys. Macdonald is much better then he gets credit for. He defended all of Maia’s submission attempts excellently. Of Macdonalds 10 loses only 3 come from submission, so I think more credit should be given to Macdonald then Maia not being able to submit him in the first few attempts.

Phalares went 3 rounds with hendo. IMO that’s impressive. Hell of a chin.

by James S on Nov 10, 2008 5:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Please stop comparing Pahlares to Maia. Were talking about to different types of fighters. Maia has subbed Herman, McDonald, Jensen the guy is 3-0 while Pahlres has only 1 VICTORY to his name in the UFC against a old ass Ivan Salvary. If anything Pahlares is completely overrated. Yeah he has a good chin thats about it. As far as being a jits guy he has never truely competed or won ANY titles PERIOD!!

by Pimp_man on Nov 10, 2008 6:00 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not comparing, just replying to Wow’s comment way up above that even though he thinks Phalares and a few others are overrated, going the distance with Hendo is impressive.

by James S on Nov 11, 2008 10:03 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

And as far as being a jits guy he is a black belt, titles or not that qualifies him as a jits guy.

by James S on Nov 11, 2008 10:09 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I really like Quarry, but I think Maia will be too slick for him. I would love to see Maia Palhares soon. How do you guys think that fight would play out?

by Jew Jif Shoes on Nov 10, 2008 5:09 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Cool that my interview got linked here. Nate was an awesome guy to talk to and I’m definitely rooting for him. Maia will be extremely tough to beat though.

by tomiscookin on Nov 10, 2008 5:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

J mac is a black belt in bjj though just not as high. i dont think nates nearly as good at jitsu macdonalds. this match will come down to who has the better wrestling. can maia take nate down? or will nate beable keep it standing? any thoughts? cuse i have no idea who has the better wrestling.

by doomdoom on Nov 10, 2008 5:33 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Nate’s right…Nobody wants to see decisions except for Machida fans…maybe Bispings too. LOL!

Great matchup. Too much Jits- Sorry Nate, you’re going down…

by Ground-Game on Nov 10, 2008 5:34 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

In my professional opinion, I would say that there are two very likely outcomes. It will either be a Unanimous Decision win for Quarry if he can defend the submissions and attempt to keep it standing. The other likely outcome is that Quarry will catch him early amounting to Quarry by pistol whip… with his penis.

by sdow on Nov 10, 2008 6:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It shall end early all right, with Quarry tapping early in the 1st round.

by Syd[a.k.a."The Negation"] on Nov 10, 2008 6:46 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

gotta love quarry. but he isnt as fast or manuverable as pre-surgery. even pete sell was catching him (knockdown). i give it to maia early

by COR on Nov 10, 2008 8:34 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

If it goes to the ground you have to give it to Maia, but I think that Quarry will be too strong and powerful for Maia to take him down and Quarry will have him knocked out by the end of the second round. Quarry has shown that he can take a beating in the Sell fight and still end up winning. Maia will not be used to that sort of punishment, and I think that will be the deciding factor. Should be a good fight.

by Ade on Nov 11, 2008 5:05 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

nate for the win here

by markg on Nov 11, 2008 6:01 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Nate has very good taken down defense and when he’s on the bottom it’s very hard to keep him there. His jits game is also better than many realize. I have Nate winning this fight by strikes.
