Joe Stevenson motivated to defeat Kenny Florian at UFC 91 thanks to BJ Penn loss

Props: FightHype.com

Quoteworthy:

"I still think about [the loss to BJ Penn]. I have to. It's what keep me motivated and makes me train harder. If we don't remember our past, we can't go forward. I have a Hawaiian wife man. She brings it up every time we argue.... I'm fighting to be a champion. I want that belt; there is no other reason. I've fought for free and I'll probably fight for free before I die again, but I'm going to bring it."

Joe Stevenson will look to re-establish his status as the number one lightweight title contender when he takes on Kenny Florian at UFC 91: "Couture vs. Lesnar" in the co-featured bout of the evening on November 15. "Daddy" lost his bid to become the 155-pound world champion when he and BJ Penn collided earlier this year at UFC 80: "Rapid Fire." Stevenson sustained a gruesome cut in the bout, which eventually ended in the second round thanks to a rear naked choke from "The Prodigy." Stevenson is not the only one who still thinks about that fight -- the pictures of him after the loss are some of the best ever. Unless, of course, MMAmania.com readers can trump the Stevenson pic with others from 2008 that are equally as gripping in the comments section below.

Me too. I love Joe Daddy and think the best is definitely yet to come for that guy. I still remember the challenge on the ultimate fighter w/ Mike Whitehead where he stayed on Mike’s body and rotated around it for like two hours. That was insane. I don’t have anything against Florian, I just didn’t like the way he fought (or didn’t fight) Huerta.

by Adam on Nov 7, 2008 1:11 PM EST up reply actions

i agree i think kenny is a solid fighter but his head is getting a little to big, and i don’t see him ever being champ as long as sherk and bj are around and i hope to put joe ahead of him as well.

by roy on Nov 7, 2008 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

Can you guys imagine what florian’s hellbows will do to him if BJ could split him open like that. Gross. Florian by UD.

by NameNotRequired on Nov 7, 2008 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

Were’s Florian’s training video, I think I saw him running next to Lance Armstrong as he rode his bike. Stevenson another dangerous fighter I guess is time for Florian to back away and run the whole fight. Just brought in to his camp new strength and conditioning coach (Kalib Starnes) he pledged to make him proud.

On other news – Brock Lesnar is motivated to win Championship belt thanks to his loss to Frank Mir

by Anger Jack on Nov 7, 2008 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

I take Florian on this one, I just think if it goes to a 3rd round it’ll be Florian.

by THORAZINE on Nov 7, 2008 9:07 PM EST up reply actions

roy, what makes you think kenny’s head is getting big. you shouldn’t make unsubstantiated comments like that. i’ve trained with kenny and he is very humble and respectful. people like you give mma fans a bad name.

by bostonmmajunkie on Nov 7, 2008 10:24 PM EST up reply actions

he seems to be getting a little big headed to me, maybe i am wrong but thats how i see it.

by roy on Nov 10, 2008 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

I like kenny to win.
you gotta hate women, what kind of bitch would bring up you championship loss when arguing…oh wait, ALL women do this Shit!!

by kevin on Nov 7, 2008 3:56 PM EST up reply actions

That’sunfair, we don’t know the context in which it was mentioned. And it’s not like we are the only ones who do it—men and women bring up shit from the past when in an argument.

ummm…someone needs to learn wat a context clue is…

by Dayman Fan on Nov 8, 2008 12:29 AM EST up reply actions

A wife reminding you about a fight you lost is just wrong. Why doesn’t she just tell him how she misses big penis while she is at it. haha

by naturalshadow on Nov 8, 2008 2:36 AM EST up reply actions

do you think kenny’s got this one kev? i am rooting for joe because i like him better but i think its a pretty evenly matched fight.

by roy on Nov 7, 2008 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

I think joe can take him down, but will have to deal with the elbows. I just don’t see him submitting Florian, and also see Florian as the smarter fighter!

by kevin on Nov 7, 2008 5:08 PM EST up reply actions

What does he mean exactly on that last sentence?

by c-war on Nov 7, 2008 12:43 PM EST reply actions

If you’ve got a bloodier pic, share it.

by Jon on Nov 7, 2008 12:47 PM EST up reply actions

There’s a great one of blood spurting out from the choke. Not bloodier but funnier.

by NameNotRequired on Nov 7, 2008 4:47 PM EST up reply actions

What about the sentence about his wife? You mean when you argue she reminds you that you got your dreams cruched by another Hawian? Really? When you argue she brings up another man? One who is more successful than you? Really? That’s weird!

by DDT on Nov 7, 2008 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

hahahahaha LOL to that comment!!

by What? on Nov 7, 2008 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

LOL DDT… What a little snatch she must be!

by BNF on Nov 7, 2008 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

i meant about him fighting for free again before he dies again, like he is looking forward to it or something? I dunno, I didnt get that part.

by c-war on Nov 7, 2008 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

LOL at that comment. Can you imagined her saying; shut up Joey at least I didn’t bitch out to BJ like you did.

by dandeman on Nov 7, 2008 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

I was thinking the same thing. That’s grounds for dismissal in my book…

by MC on Nov 7, 2008 2:06 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe she’s saying something to the effect of “I wish I had a real man, like BJ PENN.”

by O damn he got caught on Nov 7, 2008 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

I was thinking maybe she said something like “Come on Joe, BJ isn’t afraid to lick a little blood”

by DDT on Nov 7, 2008 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

lol, thats just wrong…

by O damn he got caught on Nov 7, 2008 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah DDT, your fuckin nasty bro

by enzo-enormous on Nov 7, 2008 4:35 PM EST up reply actions

I’m sorry. I thought of it and just couldn’t resist.

Niiice!

by Khaos_Warrior on Nov 7, 2008 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

I thought the same thing….why would you bring up your husband getting beat up by another man?

by Robert on Nov 7, 2008 7:20 PM EST up reply actions

with that said… Let’s go Florian!

by Fidel Cashflow on Nov 7, 2008 12:49 PM EST reply actions

Who Knows. Maybe hes saying hell fight for free and would die to become LW World Champ!

by James on Nov 7, 2008 12:49 PM EST reply actions

That is a nasty pic. I will be sure to show my wife so her love of MMA can grow even stronger. :) There was another pic of that fight when BJ had him in the choke and the blood is squirting up about 1 foot from the cut… Awesome!

by BNF on Nov 7, 2008 12:50 PM EST reply actions

What’s funny is somehow my office computer…..out of the box came with that as a sample pic in the pictures folder.

by Psyqo78®™ on Nov 7, 2008 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

Sounds like it was meant for you…

by BNF on Nov 7, 2008 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry buddy, but the Kill-Flo Hell-bows are going to leave you a bloody, defeated mess once again.

by PW on Nov 7, 2008 12:53 PM EST reply actions

No doubt… Kenny is due to slice someone up. I would count on it considering how bad Joe paniced from the blood in the BJ fight.

by BNF on Nov 7, 2008 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

WOW!!! Thats crazy! Am I the only one that thinks Stevenson is gona whoop Kenny? Kenny is gona try to pull another Machida style fight like he did with Huerta!

by JV on Nov 7, 2008 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

Well your one of the few, lol, but don’t get me wrong, I think it’s gonna be a great fight. But Stevenson isn’t the brawler that Huerta was, so I don’t see Kenny fighting so reserved and he doesn’t have the takedowns that Sherk does so I don’t see him dictating where this fight takes place. Just with the reach and the skill set I gotta give it to Kenny.

by O damn he got caught on Nov 7, 2008 1:24 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah JV, but that is the only time he has ever done that, just to frustrate Huerta and it worked. This fight won’t be like that and Kenny is too smart to get caught in the gilloutine. I do think it will be a close and exciting fight, I just think Kenny is better overall and will take it.

by BNF on Nov 7, 2008 1:24 PM EST up reply actions

JV, I have nothing but respect for Joe Stevenson; he is a great fighter. But to think it’s ‘crazy’ to have the opinion that kenny will win is idiotic. KenFlo is also a great fighter. He has the BJJ skills to nullify Joe’s takedowns and top-game, and definately has superior standup skills. That said, Joe is a bigger and stronger 155 lb’er than kenny. Should be a VERY exciting and VERY close match. Also, don’t hate on Kenny’s fighting style in the Huerta fight. Huerta is notoriously overagressive, and Kenny was smart to take his time and counter punch. The results proved it was the right technique to implement. Kenny is smart, focused, and his willpower is unsurpassed. I predict Florian by decision. STAY WITH THE FLO!!!! Sa Wat Dee Khrap

by BOSTONPRIDE on Nov 10, 2008 2:12 AM EST up reply actions

Sure and when kenny cant finish joe…he will say “when kenny sticks a mount! it sticks!”…“he was more slippery than normal..i roll with alot of guys and no one slippery like that unless theyve got something on them” i hope joe wins! kenny lost me as a fan after he schooled Huerta..but ive never heard of anyone being a sore winner.

by santiago69us on Nov 7, 2008 1:34 PM EST up reply actions

i was a little thrown off when kenny said that too. you gotta wonder though, why would kenny lie??? that little fuckin pole smoker huerta probably does grease himself up. i wouldnt put it past him.

by allamerican on Nov 8, 2008 7:31 AM EST up reply actions

You mean the ones to the back of the head? Kenny is going to get put on his back and pounded.

by Adam on Nov 7, 2008 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

that picture is amazing

by Tsunami Bong on Nov 7, 2008 12:56 PM EST reply actions

Got my $$$ on Kenny

by O damn he got caught on Nov 7, 2008 1:07 PM EST reply actions

I see kenny have a big advantage on this one I don’t think joe daddy is a top LW.

by shamo84 on Nov 7, 2008 1:16 PM EST reply actions

Guys, i hate to say it but Joe did not panick because of THE BLOOD. He panicked because he didnt want the fight to stop because of the cut. There is not one fighter in the UFC that gets scared to see their blood. There is a clear difference to panick knowing that your title shot dream is going to be stopped early because of a cut then to actually worry about the cut! Its a cut, who cares!

by What? on Nov 7, 2008 1:19 PM EST reply actions

I never saw Joe “panic” in that fight at all.

by Psyqo78®™ on Nov 7, 2008 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

I think the panic came in the form of loud grunts (or whatever Rogan called them) with every punch he threw after to blood started flowing. It was very out of character so I would assume he was in panic mode.

by BNF on Nov 7, 2008 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

I think he panicked because of like he said " I have a Hawaiian wife man. She brings it up every time we argue…. " who else would want a wife that reminds him every single time they fight that BJ wooped his ass..haha!

by kazmcnasty on Nov 8, 2008 8:20 AM EST up reply actions

joe didn’t panic but he was outclassed big time

by Robert on Nov 7, 2008 7:23 PM EST up reply actions

I will definitely be rooting for Joe.

by Bill Maher on Nov 7, 2008 1:59 PM EST reply actions

What language does the word “panick” derive from?

Anyway…I like Joe, but Kenny is going to pick him apart slowly.

by introvert on Nov 7, 2008 2:08 PM EST reply actions

Surprisingly, panic has a French derivative, panique, which came from the Greek word panikos, which translates to Of Pan, referring to the mental state induced by the Greek god Pan.

by PW on Nov 7, 2008 3:27 PM EST up reply actions

Should be a good fight, I am looking forward to it. I been supporting Kenny for a while since he kept proving me wrong the firts few times. I am even more impressed with Kenny for asking for this fight just to stay busy and to shut up the haters and doubters. I like Joe he seems like a good guy and with plenty of skills but I have stopped doubting Kenny and if it wasn’t for Sherks roid strength, Kenny would have won. Sherks power is the only thing that won him that fight.

by Ade on Nov 7, 2008 2:25 PM EST reply actions

lol, yea it would figure that Lytle is the only one that could top that. Anyone got a pic of Dewees vs Gideon on TUF? That was pretty bloody too.

by O damn he got caught on Nov 7, 2008 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

lol, you can also see a big diff in the look in their eyes, Joe is pretty much defeated while Lytle’s eyes say “bring it on mother$#%#”

by O damn he got caught on Nov 7, 2008 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

How lame to keep using that picture of daddy….

by wow on Nov 7, 2008 3:24 PM EST reply actions

“I have a Hawaiian wife man.”

You would think a professional reporter could transcribe this correctly. The way it is written you can have some fun with it.

Should be: “I have a Hawaiian wife, man.”

The second way of writing it clarifies “man” as an idiom to address the interviewer, or the reader.

The first way was just voted down in four states.

by MongoMan on Nov 7, 2008 4:04 PM EST reply actions

A good grammar joke will make me laugh every time.

by PW on Nov 8, 2008 1:45 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t see Florian losing to anyone. He has gotten crisp enough at every aspect of the sport that I’d say he is too well rounded for anyone in the UFC. Eddie Alvarez would probably beat him though.

by EazyEismydad on Nov 7, 2008 4:06 PM EST reply actions

His wife said…“Just shut up Joe, your not going to beat this hawaian in an argument…in fact, when have you ever beat a hawaian in anything?”

by Gregg on Nov 7, 2008 4:52 PM EST reply actions

God what a gruesome picture! Penn just might be a vampire wannabe who thinks he has special powers after he licks his opponents blood. The guy is a weirdo, very talented weirdo but a weirdo.

by nathan on Nov 7, 2008 5:02 PM EST reply actions

What is a Hawaiian wife man????

by JonnyBoy on Nov 7, 2008 11:03 PM EST reply actions

Joe Stevenson is even in the same league as Florian. Anyone who thinks that Joe is the favorite needs to stop taking drugs & pay attention. Who is Joe’s biggest win or even biggest loss. Yves Edwards was probably his best win. Joe lost to Josh Neer! Joe is nothing more than a submission wrestler. Kenny can do it all & is in waaaay better shape. Stevenson’s only hope is lay & pray. He doesn’t have what it takes to submit Kenny. I really don’t think he can even pull off the lay & pray cause Sherk barely did it & Sherk is 5000 times more fit than Stevenson.

I’m willing to put a large wad of cash on Kenny & feel safe doing so.
