They should institute a rule where a champ who misses weight automatically loses the belt. Filho essentially cheated Sonnen of an opportunity. 2-3 lbs I can chalk up to being careless, but 7 lbs is gross negligence, and likely a premeditated, underhanded way of holding the belt. Weak sauce.

i really did not like how Paulo went about this whole thing.. from not making weight..to blaming Chael..and making excuses for not making weight.. to then mouthing off on what he will do to Sonnen cuz he has to give him 25% of his purse.. Paulo should of given the belt to Sonnen.. or be stripped of the title.. even if the 185 division will merge with the UFC.. he should not be officially considered the 185 WEC Champ.

Here, Here I second that motion, I was thinking the same thing, well put Phil!

I agree 100%. Filho should not be allowed to retain that belt. Even if he beat Sonnen. I believe it was filho’s intention to keep that belt at all cost. I know this is premature but I want to see sonnen go after silva. I believe he would make a good fight of it, if not win it straight out. Team Quest is no joke!

that was one of the worst fights I’ve ever watched! Not only did Fihlo not make weight and not fight, my 6 year old throws bombs compared to what sonnen was throwing!

HAHA i agree… i could have taken all of those shots no prob…
by belfort_fan on Nov 6, 2008 5:06 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
So team quest’s best guy, dan henderson, couldn’t beat silva. but Sonnen, who just went 3 rounds with a half dead Filho, who i could have farted at and knocked out, might beat Silva. I know there are still a few people sore at Silva for not knocking out Cote, but geez.

I was thinking last night, ans Anderson Silva is one of my all time most favorite fighters, but he needs to fight better competition, and that competition is a LHW. Leban is a gate keeper at best, cote isn’t top level! Rich Franklin has NEVER been in my opinion a top fighter (I realize lots of you will disagree), so that leaves Dan Henderson. I really don’t need to waste one of his last remaining fights on Okami, there’s no doubt in my mind he wins. His one LHW bout was again against a gate keeper and was an impressive one punch KO.
We need to see him fight guys like:
forrest, rashad, chuck, rampage or even wandy. I don’t need to see another marquart or even Bisping (even though I am one of the only guys to call for this fight.) To be considered one of the best P4P fighters ever, he needs to step his game up!

I agree. Anderson is #1 in my book. i do not get excited to see him fight guys like cote and okami. Cote had a good game plan, but the fight was not exciting. i am praying that Machida gets knocked out by Thiago so there is no reason for Silva to not try for the LHW title

i agree in the ufc i would like to see a rematch with dan and other than that i don’t see a big fight for him at middle weight(unless outside of ufc) so his remainder of fights would be put to better use at lhw.i still would like to see him fight some guys outside the ufc not that they stand a chance but than he would have truly cleaned out the m.w. devision(lindland,f shamrock, cung le) maybe even belfort or lawler

What happens to the belt now that the MW LHW are in ufc now????
by belfort_fan on Nov 6, 2008 5:02 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
They will probably lend it to the EliteXC for their auction.

Couldn’t agree more, Ingo B. Being 7lbs over is the same as refusing to fight. I’m all for automatic loses under such circumstances.

I don’t see how it’s smart to reward somebody because the champ didn’t make weight. I agree that the champ deserves a heavy penalty, but handing the belt to somebody who hasn’t won it doesn’t make much sense.
by Ben! on Nov 6, 2008 1:27 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Nobody said hand the belt to someone else. Just that the champ should be stripped of his belt. Which I totally agree with.
by BNF on Nov 6, 2008 1:35 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That was the first thing I thought of, a champ that can not make weight should for-fit the belt. It looked as if he did not try to make weight, he was 4.5lbs over at the weigh-ins. He didn’t even try in the fight, he showed up, milked the fight to survive, and made a boat load of money. Come on WEC, you are better than that. Make a example out of him, he deserves it.Sonnen gained a fan in me.

do we know what mike browns injury is yet?
by gasmanshad on Nov 6, 2008 1:08 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
There definitely should be severe penalties for reigning champs that don’t make weight. Purse reduction or giving a portion to the opponent who did their part to make the fight (like with Gina Carano). Filho was given a gift of changing the fight to a non-title fight, while breaching his contract (IMO) with the WEC by not making weight. He let down not only Chael (and denied him of his shot), but he also let down the fans and the spectators who were expecting to see a title fight. Chael was killing him in the previous fight up until the ref stopped it prematurely. And not meeting the requirements of his contract is simply disrespectful and dishonorable and PF should be embarassed.
by rhinograph on Nov 6, 2008 1:12 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I actually believe that us, the fans, were the true winners that that was a non-title fight. Because 2 more rounds of that and I would have ripped my eyes out.

great point BNF!!! That was the most intelligent comment of the day!

Leonard Garcia look good against Pulver…How is he going to do against Mike Brown?
by cageface on Nov 6, 2008 1:22 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Paulo’s actions were horrible last night…
It seems as if he isn’t cured from his depression /chemical addictions…
The only reason I will say that I don’t really care about him giving Chael the belt is because Chael’s performance was disgusting as well…I have even seen threads / posts talking about his domination…He stood over Paulo a lot of the 1st rd when Paulo was on his back…obviously Paulo was not going to try and get up in that situation, so the crowd boos and boos. His punches were weak, Paulo was obvioulsy out of it looking to his imaginary friends, maybe Sonnen was wierded out by it all or something but how could you not go for the finish? This was one of the worst fights I have ever seen (on both sides)…Then for Paulo to not try and go for broke in the 3rd was even more painful…
How come every phenom BJJ practicioner that has horrible stand up, when in situations like this, start pulling out the spinning wheel kicks etc?
by CagefightingKip on Nov 6, 2008 1:49 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
It looked to me like sonnen wasn’t punching him hard on purpose, like he knew something was up with pf and didn’t want to hurt him. I can respect that if true. If not, then he needs to do a lot to improve his standup because it looked worse than their last fight.
by killswitch on Nov 6, 2008 2:03 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
it seemed like he was hitting hard in the 1st and 2nd, but that third round, yeah he was sparring
by brendan on Nov 6, 2008 3:05 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I really understand Chael’s excuses for not attacking more.. He said in the interview that it felt like Paulo was trying to bait him and trick him and was just waiting for his time to strike. If I was Chael and knowing that I lost my last fight to him by getting baited I would pick my shots and hang out. PF is this months winner of the Kalib Stearnes award. Congrats man now go kill yourself.

What was up with no interview of Chael after the fight?
by kirk on Nov 6, 2008 3:10 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I noticed that also. I have never seen the winner in a big fight not be interviewed. The WEC probably just wanted people to forget about the fight as quickly as possible.
by Adam on Nov 6, 2008 6:32 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Pressed for time. WEC was supposed to go until 10, then the UFC had the ultimate fighter at 10. They cut cut the post fight interview with hopes that they could save time. Amazingly, the last fight of the night (which could have ran well into 10:20-30) ended at like 10:03 on the dot lol.

IS EVERYONE IN SHOCK?… it’s amazing how very few comments have been made by Fabers’ loss?… Faber is a P4P fighter but he’s been exposed in the standup war… his chin is somewhat questionable.. it’s always has been because he’s never had to absorb a barrage of shots after 1 good punch. Usually Urijah gets out of trouble immediately, but this time he got conitually pounded on instead of put into BJ mode from the back. Good thing for Brown, ’cause if he sat down after the 1st rnd he might have barely gotten up from that torn cartiledge.
by THORAZINE on Nov 6, 2008 7:25 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah Thorazine I agree as well. And man Filho may be my new least favorite fighter. Really cant help but hate the guy after this.
by The Anomaly on Nov 6, 2008 9:42 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah guys, Filho’s bizzare actions has definitely stole the spotlight. No one dislikes Brown but no one knows too much about him either… I imagine WEC ratings will drop a bit now that Faber is not Champ and Pulver is on the downslide. Faber VS Garcia… give Brown time to heal.
