WEC bonuses and awards for 'Faber vs Brown'

Photo: ESPN.com

WEC 36: "Faber vs. Brown" from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla., on November 5 has come to a close.

The highly anticipated event, which was put on pause when Hurricane Ike threatened the South Florida region back around September 10, was a success at the gate, drawing more than 5,225 fans and raking in $563,578 at the turnstiles.

Several fighters on the card also made out like bandits with their respective performances.

In particular, the new WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Brown, who knocked off the promotion’s posterboy, Urijah Faber, with a crushing first round technical knockout in the main event of the evening. The American Top Team (ATT) powerhouse earned "Knockout of the Night" for dethroning the "California Kid," according to MMAWeekly.com.

Unfortunately, those at home did not get to see the other matches that earned special honors. Donald Cerrone and Rob McCullough went to war for three rounds in the "Fight of the Night" and Brazilian jiu-jitsu wizard Rani Yahya score "Submission of the Night" … both matches were on the under card.

Oh well.

Regardless, it was a solid night of action that produced several exciting fights that did air on Versus. And the fighters honored below more than deserved a little extra cold hard cash for their outstanding performances.

Here are the special fight bonuses for WEC 36:

Fight of the Night -- Donald Cerrone and Rob McCullough
Knockout of the Night -- Mike Brown
Submission of the Night -- Rani Yahya

Each fighter received $7,500 for their efforts in addition to their respective base salaries, which we will pass along as soon as they become available.

LOL very true phil. Before anyone accuses me of being a bandwagon guy, you regulars know I’m not. So I’m not hopping off when I say Filho is done. What was he on last night? I can almost guarantee he fails a drug test! He’s ranked #2 in the world…and I’ve never known why! His submission skills are there, but his head , stand up, desire and weight are not! Sonnen looked like shit too!
I’m so glad I didn’t gamble on the fights because I went 5-0 in college football last night. Huge money baby.
Faber will be back, but I’ll admit, I was wrong about him goint to 155. I don’t think he’d hack it against guys like Florian and Stevenson, and even Sherk would decision him.
Overall, not an impressive showing for WEC!

it was a good night of fights, they just didn’t go the way the wec probally hoped for, i agree paulo is done he does not belong at #2 maybe not even top 10 with the shape he is in, faber will be fine he just tried to go for a sick move and got caught but i do think this hurt there ppv hopes, at least in my eyes.i think faber would be good at 155 but he is still great at 145.

by roy on Nov 6, 2008 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

you don’t think he’d be too small roy? 5’6 fighting guys cutting 25 pounds to get to 155? just a question, you may be right on!

by kevin on Nov 6, 2008 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

i don’t think he would be champ and i agree with the fighters who you said would beat him, i said he would do good and he would but he would get beat by a few of the better lw and why be good at 155 when he can be great at 145. i say he gets back on track at 145 and maybe does a couple of super fights at 155 but don’t try to make that his home.

by roy on Nov 6, 2008 11:59 AM EST up reply actions

how did mike brown get KO of the night. i dont remember who it was but on the televised card some dude got KTFO!!!.. i dont get it.

They always show favortism towards title fights.

by BNF on Nov 6, 2008 10:18 AM EST up reply actions

Aaron Simpson KO’d tha local guy Avalla or something. SICK KO

by ViolentMike on Nov 6, 2008 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

I missed the Faber fight..He probably lost cause he was tired of facing less than stelar opponents. It will soon happen to the spider and Fedor.. I’m not sure if he’s still gonna be considered in the top 5 pound-for-pound.

by Anonymousf*ck on Nov 6, 2008 10:17 AM EST reply actions

He lost cause he tried to throw some cute spinning elbow and got KTFO for his efforts.

by BNF on Nov 6, 2008 10:20 AM EST up reply actions

that elbow would have been nasty if it landed tho..

by Ted on Nov 6, 2008 10:23 AM EST up reply actions

He tried to be Anderson Silva and he paid the price!

KO of the night should have gone to Simpson. He almost decapitated that dude!

by john on Nov 6, 2008 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

yeah but :“would have been” cost him the fight. But he was already rocked and was over powered in there, which is why I think he’s too small for LW

by kevin on Nov 6, 2008 10:41 AM EST up reply actions

Trying to be too flashy!
I agree KO of the night should ahve been simpson. Also think fight of the night could have gone to Roseholt vs Osterneck-that was a great fight!

by BritishBulldog on Nov 6, 2008 10:49 AM EST up reply actions

“I missed the fight but here’s my analysis on why he lost”

Are you serious? If you missed the fight, why would anyone want to hear why you think he lost?

by ViolentMike on Nov 6, 2008 11:59 AM EST up reply actions

BNF, so true. I know Uriah throws some wild stuff and it has worked, but it will come back to bite you. He will be back and a lose is sometimes the best thing that can happen to a fighter. He will be hungrier than ever.MMA is not sbout the prefect record, that is one more reason why this is the best sport in the world

That Filho/Sonnen fight was on par with Starns/Quarry, but at least Nate was trying. Sonnen was just as bad as Filho, WTF!!! Chael was throwing the weakest punches and kicks I have ever seen in a fight. That was pathetic. If I were Dana I would not allow either of them into the UFC. Go fight in smaller shows and prove yourselves first!!!

by BNF on Nov 6, 2008 10:26 AM EST reply actions

filho Disgraced himself!

HOwever, if he would have subm, itted Chael, when he rolled into that leg lock, it would have been submission of the year!

by john on Nov 6, 2008 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

BNF i thought the same thing! The first round wasn’t much easier to watch than the third round of Starns/Quarry. Ref should have stood them up.

Is there any way to see the undercard fights on these cards? Like can I pay the WEC some money or something? lol. Seriously though I do wanna see it.

by sp00ner1234 on Nov 6, 2008 10:28 AM EST reply actions

They have post fight interviews & such on WEC website:
http://www.wec.tv/index.cfm?pn=2&fa=VideoCenter.list

But no fight videos, whats up with that?

by Anger Jack on Nov 6, 2008 11:04 AM EST up reply actions

How did Filho/Chonnen not win fight of the night? WTF!

That fight ranks up there with Shamrock/Severn 2, Kimo/Severn, Rizzo/Ricco, and Quarry/Starnes.

I’ve said in the past Filho is overrated, but he looked doped out of his fucking mind for this fight. He even started talking to… nobody for the second half of the fight. He’s got some serious problems

by yohnstoppable on Nov 6, 2008 10:49 AM EST reply actions

Damn, if that KO didn’t earn Aaron Simpson KO of the night, I don’t know what would. I don’t give a fuck that Brown TKO’d Faber. Simpson’s overhand right on that dude was brutality.

by Jeff on Nov 6, 2008 11:25 AM EST reply actions

Agreed! Faber did get handed, but Simpson jacked that dude bad.

I still think Faber will be a force at 155, but he has to work back to the top again. Plus, he would have to start at the bottom of 155, so it might not be worth it. He just got caught like everyone does at some point. He will be back for sure. Dude is still a super bad ass.
