Marcus Davis vs Chris Lytle UFC 93 fight set for Dublin

Get ready for an Irish banger at The O2 in Dublin on Saturday, January 17, 2008.

As expected, welterweight sluggers Marcus Davis (15–4) and Chris Lytle (26-16–5) will indeed throw leather at UFC 93: "Dublin," setting up a 170-pound match up that already has "Fight of the Night" written all over it.

One would imagine that "Knockout of the Night" would be more appropriate, but believe it or not neither the "Irish Hand Grenade" nor "Lights Out" have ever been stopped by strikes in their respective mixed martial arts careers.

That could all change in early 2009 … at least for one fighter.

Davis -- who openly questioned whether or not Lytle was deserving of the opportunity to fight him at this time -- is coming off a slick second round submission win over Paul Kelly at UFC 89: "Bisping vs. Leben" just last month.

It marked the twelfth with in 13 fights for the former contestant on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 2. The Bangor, Maine, native has notched several of the wins during that span overseas in Europe, making quite a name for himself among the many fans located there.

Lytle is also fresh of a win at UFC 89, decisioning Paul Taylor in an action-packed back-and-forth brawl that actually earned "Fight of the Night" honors. With the victory, Lytle has now won just four of his last eight.

However, the losses during that stretch were to Josh Koscheck, Thiago Alves, Matt Hughes and Matt Serra — some pretty good competition.

He’ll get another big test against Davis because inside the Octagon no good deed ever goes unpunished. Already, Davis is calling in several radio interviews for Lytle to keep this fight standing, adding that whoever takes the match to the ground will be branded a pussy.

Game on.

Rich "Ace" Franklin (24-3) and Dan "Hollywood" Henderson (23-7) -- two of the world’s most elite 205-pound fighters -- will headline UFC 93. Also featured is the return of Mauricio "Shogun" Rua as he takes on UFC pioneer Mark "The Hammer" Coleman.

Kind of hope Lytle knocks him out since Davis was saying he wasnt good enough to fight him.

I like both fighters.. but Davis was stunting hard.. like Lyte wasn’t on his level.. So I will be rooting for Lyte in this fight.. ( in which this match… can sneak itself into one of the better fights of the year.. if all goes well )

If Lytle gases out like he did in his last fight, I can guarantee you Davis will K0 him.

I like both fighters, but agree it will be an exciting fight.

Lytle is just a better version of Davis.

i think you got that backwards buddy!

by allamerican on Nov 4, 2008 2:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

“whoever takes the match to the ground will be branded a pussy” – that is the most stupid thing I have ever heard any fighter say!

Yeah, of course everyone has their strengths and weaknesses but as an “MMA” fighter you should not be forcing any one approach to winning the fight.

Personally I think it will be a good fight but I now hope Davis gets gogoplata’d for that comment!!

This is one of the reasons most fights are becoming a kickboxing matches these days cos of this belief that submission wins are boring to watch.

by Ca$z on Nov 4, 2008 2:02 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

davis is the one who said it. i agree that it is a crazy thing to say, but honeslty i would be surprised to see this fight go to the ground much. would’nt it be funny if davis went for the takedown 1rst. lytle has as good as stand-up as davis and am iron chin. may the best “chin” win.

by b.w. on Nov 4, 2008 2:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That makes Davis the pussy when he fought Paul Taylor!

by DanP on Nov 5, 2008 9:33 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

this fight is to determine who the true gate keeper is. should be a war.

by roy on Nov 4, 2008 12:00 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

NICE! this should be a slugfest! well lytle hasnt been finished before just stopped twice due to cuts. marcus on the other hand has been but never KO’d. i dunno if anything this will be a well even battle they both have excellent ground game good chins and powerful stand up. either this is a UD win for davis for lytle finishes marcus in the 3rd tko.

by santiago69us on Nov 4, 2008 12:01 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

This will be fight of the night on that card!

by JV on Nov 4, 2008 12:01 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

yeah, and ive already read where davis has said that the 1rst to go for a takedown is a pu$$y. this fight is going to be a war.

by b.w. on Nov 4, 2008 12:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That was funny! He must want a bonus?

by JV on Nov 4, 2008 12:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

lol! true.

by b.w. on Nov 4, 2008 12:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It’s not like winning does anything for either of them. The best they can hope for is collecting bonuses until new gatekeepers(with better talent but not enough to get to the top) replace them.

by NameNotRequired on Nov 4, 2008 1:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

What are you talking about No Name??? So should they both just hang up their gloves now since neither will be champion. People like you make no sense to me. I watch MMA to see good fights. The majority of the time the fight of the night is not a title match. And please explain to me how a win over Lytle (especially if Marcus can finish him) does nothing for Marcus. He has a much better record than most UFC fighters and 12 wins out of his last 13 fight ain’t bad. If he keeps winning he cannot be denied a title shot!

by BNF on Nov 4, 2008 1:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah for sure. Who cares if a fighter wins or loses… I mean don’t get me wrong everyone likes a winner.. I like a fighter with so much heart in order to beat him you have to destroy him, I.E. Leonard Garcia vs. Roger Huerta. Just because a fighter isn’t a contender now doesn’t mean he won’t ever be. let’s face it, it only takes 4 good wins at any time to make you a contender, and if you get lucky a couple times you could be fighting for a title just on heart alone.

by sp00ner1234 on Nov 4, 2008 1:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

For some reason it irks me that Lytle rather brawl than easily sub him and move ahead in the division. Also gassed out stand up brawls only show “Heart.” I like seeing technique and gameplans but that’s a matter of opinions. Also i’ll say Marcus’ record is as padded as Roger Huerta’s. Beating nobody’s never leads to title shots. He will struggle against anyone who isn’t a can or rookie (Please refer to mike swick). Lytle can only lose by cuts.

by NameNotRequired on Nov 4, 2008 2:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Swick is neither a can or a rookie. Marcus was hurt in that fight anyways, which explains his preformance. Yes, Lytle gassed in his last fight, but something can also be said for the chin and heart of Taylor to take all those shots.

These guys are both technical strikers with tons of power. That combo usually makes for an explosive fight.

Marcus may struggle with wrestlers/ground guys but that does not mean he can’t punch a hole through his opponents head before it hits the ground. Alves also used to struggle on the ground and look how he did agaisn’t Koscheck.

by BNF on Nov 4, 2008 2:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

winning counts, but that 40-65k fight of the night bonus dont hurt either.

by b.w. on Nov 4, 2008 2:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i see davis gettin the ko iflytle fights the way he always does

by the heat on Nov 4, 2008 12:06 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

getting called a pussy is the worst thing a man can hear lol

by ruan-fiy on Nov 4, 2008 12:07 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Not deserving?, who does he think he is, its not like he’s even in the top ten. Lytle will definitely bring it to him and can stand and bang with pretty much anyone in the division. Both guys are scrapers and it should be an entertaining fight.

by nathan on Nov 4, 2008 12:19 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Do you all think we will get the see the old Shogun or the one that got submitted against forest?

by rydinlow on Nov 4, 2008 12:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

who knows? he’s fighting coleman. it will be hard to judge where he stands in this fight, unless he loses, wich would be hard to belive.

by b.w. on Nov 4, 2008 12:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

This fights is gonna get stopped because of a cut. Marcus Davis has the crisper striking but Chris Lytle does NOT get knocked out. Look forward to another blood bath.

by The Slice on Nov 4, 2008 12:28 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

OH. MY. GOD. Shogun v. Mark Coleman?! I’ve been waiting for this. This is a war waiting to happen after what happened in Pride. Well actually I think Shogun will tapdance on Coleman’s face since Coleman is way past his prime but it will be a very entertaining fight!

by bostonmmajunkie on Nov 4, 2008 1:19 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I have wanted to see this fight for a while. Marcus’s main motivation should be to try and finish Lytle. That should send a statement to the rest of the division. Fight of the night for sure.

by BNF on Nov 4, 2008 1:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

i agree about the fight of the night. its either that, or knockout of the night…i say davis by tko in the 2nd.

by allamerican on Nov 4, 2008 2:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

This will almost be a boxing match.

by KAS on Nov 4, 2008 1:39 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

JARDINE should be on this card

by ramon on Nov 4, 2008 1:59 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

We’ll finally get to see lytles full potential. Except last fight they’ve been matching him up with wrestlers.I hope lytle KO’S Davis. But I do like both fighters.

by GSP SUCKA on Nov 4, 2008 2:14 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I have to go with Davis on this one. His boxing is better surely.

by RobH86 on Nov 4, 2008 2:34 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

i honestly think lytle lost against taylor, nevertheless this should be an exciting fight.

will the ace vs hollywood fight be at 185 or 205, or does anyone know?

by Buttcrack Obama bin Laden on Nov 4, 2008 10:07 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

davis is a funny guy frontin’ like lytle isn’t on his level. if it goes to the ground davis is done, and standing he could get taken out, but obviously davis has the upper hand standing. i’m not so sure why he’s making it a point to talk shit already regarding the fight going to the floor if he’s so much better than lytle to begin with. the fight goes where it goes, if lytle takes it there you best be prepared to get choked out by a ‘pussy’.

by Phil Baloni on Nov 4, 2008 11:23 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I hope Lytle pounds the crap out of him, knocks him to the ground then puts him in a submission. Davis makes me laugh, acts like his to good to fight Lytle then calls him a “pussy” if he takes him to the ground. How embarrased will Davs be if he loses. Kick his ass Chris !!!!!!!!!
