.. My knee has been cleared.. I’m going to left weights.. get real srtrong.. in Feb.. start training hard for the fight.. get with his boxing coach.. get a game plan… He wanted to fight earlier.. but the UFC said the Serra family is expecting a kid.. around Jan/Feb.. so that’s why it’s in April.. and his Dorm room style Training facility in St. Louis.. blah blah blah..

this is gonna be on the undercard right? Who really gives a shit about this fight! 2 crappy fighters..hope its on the undercard i wont be paying for a PPV to watch these 2 sissies go at it

by newfie-mma-fan on Oct 29, 2008 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They’ll end up making it a co main event.. just cuz of all the tuf drama between the to of them.

by PhilQNY on Oct 29, 2008 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t care about a has been and a never will be. This fight has lost all its luster for me. It would have been cool for the title when it was supposed to happen, but who the hell cares about this fight now. Also, they won’t even fight for another 6 months, I sure hope we won’t have to hear from these 2 constantly for the next 6 months!

Hughes said that he expects BJ to beat GSP. This is the first time I have ever agreed with Hughes

by john on Oct 29, 2008 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

“awesome, awesome”
First thing I heard was he thinks BK will win! I say this because with all the time to prepare, there is no way BJ isn’t in shape. This will also play into GSP’s head. Right now he’s thinking “oh boy, my hero doesn’t think I can win!”
The dorm aspect of his gym is awesome! If I leave my wife, I’m there, 100 bucks a week! Just kidding, I can’t stand hghes, but the worst part of this interview was the interviewer, how does some guy with a sony handycam get press credentials?

by kevin (some guys hate me...and I don't care) on Oct 29, 2008 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

hughes desperatley does’nt want gsp to win imo. he does’nt want his “greatest ww of all time” title to be taken over. he has been dogging gsp since gsp beat him a 2nd time (especially in the fitch fight). hughes will never fight for the title again.

by b.w. on Oct 29, 2008 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

damn right BW!

by john on Oct 29, 2008 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

B.W.-

That is some interesting insight. Never looked at it that way. I thought it was the usual Hughes bluster (he usually gives backhanded compliments or takes subtle swipes) but there might be some credibility to that.

by OJR on Oct 29, 2008 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ur totally right b.w.. Hughes wants GSP to lose..and lose bad.. I picture seeing an excited Hughes.. saying to the camera. " I love it.. I love it.." after Serra did something he couldn’t and most likely will never ever do.. KO GSPizze.

by PhilQNY on Oct 29, 2008 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

hughes had alot of negative comments about gsp and fitch, even though many consider that gsp’s greatest fight and fitch was equally praised for his toughness (both well deserved). hughes is very jealous of gsp imo. if bj does go on to beat gsp (i still think the fight is 50/50) hughes will go back to dogging bj, like he used to.

Dorm room style training center or Christian brainwashing institute??? Matt Hughes is a weird dude…. War Terror!!

by Rilly on Oct 30, 2008 7:33 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

A Crappy interviewer just asked how training went. Matt just has this arrogance to himself & when he talks he seems like he’s thinking “Damn it’s the same old questions from another booger-eating fanboy”. Anyways Matt said its way too early to be training for the fight. He’s just going to lift weights and start hard training in February. Then said he didn’t care about the winner of GSP and BJ. And then talked about his gym. Which actually is a pretty cool concept. He’s got dorms near the workout facility, that fighters can go live in for $100 a week. So they can live there and train there.

by open24hrz on Oct 29, 2008 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good summary! Yeah the training thing does sound cool, staying at the dorms for 100.00 a week. That was about the most interesting thing he did say.

by UKMMA on Oct 29, 2008 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he also said that the reason for fighting in april

was cause matt serras wife is having a baby.

i alwayz thought it was his knee.

by ricky~dooby on Oct 29, 2008 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Doesn’t Miletich do something similar? I think I read somewhere that rents out the rooms above his training facility.

by RealDrew on Oct 29, 2008 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sounds like an awesome facilite set up with the dorms, too bad the gym is run by Matt Hughes.

Mutt Hughes, man of god. It would be so ironic/funny if an act of god destroyed his gym. LOL Tornado anyone?!

It would be god’s way of punishing hughes for tainting His name with hughes’ ungodly personality.

I have to give Hughes Mega pros for that " Dorm " rooms idea.. that’s hot.. college type Dorm rooms.. Hughes.. for that you got my props.

by PhilQNY on Oct 29, 2008 10:35 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Same here, that sounds pretty cool. I guess he had those built when he had his gym built. Now thats looking ahead in life after fighting. Train and keep the money coming in. If I could I’d be there.

by Rubberman on Oct 29, 2008 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I very much doubt Hughes would get a shot at the title after beating Serra.
He would have to string together a few wins before hand, and frankly.. I think he is considering 2-3 fights and leaving.

by Luppers on Oct 29, 2008 10:35 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Not looking at this clip. Matt Who?

In my opinion there is no more Matt Hughes.

by tripleainto on Oct 29, 2008 10:57 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

A couple losses and you just write off one of the best fighters thus far in mma?? Come on man, 2 losses to GSP and a loss to Alves since 2004 shouldn’t make him non existent to anyone. Sure he is getting older and should probably consider hanging it up soon, but give some credit where credit is due!

by Bojo on Oct 29, 2008 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t understand the disrespect from some people. Matt was one of the most dominating champions ever. Fan or not he was and is good for the sport.

Most interesting thing he said was if BJ comes in shape he wins the fight…funny how Matt gives so much credit to BJ and not GSP…maybe cause he beat BJ twice….making himself look better?

by Robert on Oct 29, 2008 11:06 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Umm, BJ tooled Matt Hughes in their first fight.

by Pat on Oct 29, 2008 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah he utterly confused Matt in that first fight.Imo he would have won the second if his rib wouldn’t have been displaced. I always thought that was a crap excuse until it happened to me. Sucked bad…. couldn’t breathe and pain shoots all thru your back… sucks.

by Psyqo78®™ on Oct 29, 2008 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not saying that a rib injury is something you can shrug off, but it happens during a fight. Just look at Silva-Cote. You have to rule a fighter TKO’d if they get injured, unless it’s via an illegal move. If the ref knew BJ broke his ribs, he would’ve stopped the fight. But no doubt, BJ’s a tough SOB.

by Pat on Oct 29, 2008 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

no doubt, but it just goes to show his perserverence and toughness. Any true fighter that has an injury that is not absolutely noticeable is going to try to continue because of sheer drive.

by Psyqo78®™ on Oct 29, 2008 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It can be just as dibilitating (at the moment not long term) as a knee injury.

by Psyqo78®™ on Oct 29, 2008 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

my bad got confused with GSP beating Matt twice for some reason
thanks

by Robert on Oct 29, 2008 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hughes only beat BJ once, he just doesn’t like not having that belt around his waist. Its all good though because no matter what Hughes has only lost to the important people in the division, GSP (WW title holder/top 5 P4P), BJ (LW title holder/top 5 P4P), Thiago (No. 1 contender/should be a top 5 WW). No harm in losing to these people but should he lose to Serra it would be hard not to argue for retirement.

Bj Tooled Matt HUghes The First Fight….Hughes Only Beat Bj Once..He Which He Was Getting Owned Untill Bj Gassed And Had A Broken Rib Im Pretty Sure I Read Somewhere…

Bj Will Beat Gsp

The Serra fight is Matt Hughes last fight on his contract. With a win he will retire.

Even if Dana dangles a title shot in front of him?

by PW on Oct 29, 2008 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Penn beats GSP then maybe Hughes has a potential title shot ahead of him. A rubber match between Penn and Hughes could sell a good amount but I’d still like Hughes to fight someone like Diego, Fitch, or Kos to earn the shot. Before that though Thiago should get his shot against the winner of the GSP Penn fight.

by RoB on Oct 29, 2008 1:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Serra has better standup and better bjj. Hughes is the better wrestler and he is a lot stronger.

Interesting fight….especially with all the bad blood between the two.

I’m hoping for Serra to send that arrogant prick out of the UFC with a TKO.

by Flyingknees on Oct 29, 2008 1:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think their arrogance is equall although Hughes’ is more deserved. Don’t get me wrong I love confidence and hate arrogance but if any of the two deserve that right more than the other….that would be Hughes.

by Psyqo78®™ on Oct 29, 2008 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hope Serra retires mutt hughes arse. Make him bleed in the process would be nice.

by cbchwa on Oct 30, 2008 12:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hughes seems to have lost his drive. GSP woud tear him up if they fought again.

by Jason Townsend on Oct 29, 2008 2:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

First off I don’t agree with hughes on the gsp/penn fight if he comes in shape, what a joke when has penn fought a welter weight into the later rounds and looked good, we haven’t seen it yet. Smaller guys almost always get tired out by the larger stronger guys no matter what shape there in, gsp wins this one no matter what shape penns in. And I don’t buy this he likes both guys he looked pretty damn happy when gsp lost to serra the first time, I believe he’s jealous of gsp to be honest. He beat penn last time and gsp destroyed him in there last two fights together of course he wants penn to win. I myself will be surprised if penn does win especially since its a 5 round fight where gsp could afford to lose a round or two which I don’t think he will. Ya penn picked a stubbied armed sherk apart for 3 rounds, mainly because of reach advantage, the gsp that showed up to the fitch fight would beat the penn who showed up to the sherk fight plain and simple.

by nathan on Oct 29, 2008 2:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t see your point. Fitch played into GSP’s strength while Sherk played against Penn’s. GSP also could not finish Fitch while Penn finished Sherk in the third round. Hughes may have a biased but Penn is a hard man to finish. I see this fight either going to Penn by submission or GSP by decision.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Oct 29, 2008 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What a lame excuse " I would have won if I was in shape ", if penn loses again, I wonder what excuses he’ll come up with this time. I would have won if I didn’t get subbed or ko’ed. Shut the hell up with excuses you either win or lose, if you didn’t prepare properly for a fight your a moron. Rib injury, gasses out f**k off, yes penn is a talented fighter who should stay in the light weight division where he belongs he’s too small for the top welter weights IMO. I’ll never comment on this site again if gsp loses, that’s how confident I am gsp wins.

by nathan on Oct 29, 2008 3:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

My point is fitch (who gsp tooled)is a hell of a lot tougher opponent than sherk is, fitch would give penn one hell of a fight so would thiago, koscheck and diego, even karo. Sherk, penn serra are all natural light weight fighters a bigger guy is a disadvantage normally. Size and strength does matter, harder strikes, easier to get out of submissions, harder to get down, I really don’t get how so many people think penn has an advantage on gsp I didn’t see it in the first fight, penn comes out wildly gassing himself out,gsp tends to pace him self ready for a long fight. Its just common sense, try running 100 yards at full speed and then try to fight someone. Penn alway wants to end the fight in the first round and when he doesn’t he get worse each round, I can guarantee you’ll see this with gsp/penn 2.

by nathan on Oct 29, 2008 3:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hughes should have given credit to GSP. YOu can tell he’s a sore loser. I was a big Hughes fan but his attitude just ruins it. He’s also showing why he lost his title. He talks about lifting weights like it’s what is going to win the fight. How about technique? What can you say about a former champ that STILL uses his former high school wrestling buddy as his main coach. It’s unreal. He didn’t cross train and deserved to lose.

Having said that, I think he’s still a tough SOB. GSP will tool Penn.

by Damn on Oct 29, 2008 5:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I used to like matt hughes but don’t anymore he’s too arrogant for me. And to back up my point about penn look at any off his fights he fades in each round.

carl uno 1 penn ko’s in 11 seconds
carl uno 2 a draw for 5 rounds
jens pulver 1 penn lost 5 rounds but pulver tapped after the horn in either round 1 or 2 like I said penn fades with each round.
gsp 1 he won the first half of round one and in my opinion lost the second half of one and rounds two and three
hughes 1 he dominated in round 1
hughes 2 he dominated rounds 1 and half of round two
round 3 he lost due in an injury and gassing

If penn can’t beat gsp within 2 rounds everything points to him losing a 5 round fight if you can’t see that your delusional. I don’t care how good of shape penn is in he’s never going to be the athlete gsp is, gsp looked as good in his fifth round against fitch as he did in the first, can’t wait to prove all the penn nut huggers on this site wrong january 31. Penns only advantage over gsp is his bjj and even though it looked as if he had better hands in there first match up I think gsp is the better more technical striker, kicks matter too.

by nathan on Oct 29, 2008 5:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree. BJ is a hell of a fighter, but he’s not as naturally atheletic as GSP, has to work harder to stay fit, and just doesn’t have the strength or cardio to match up. THe excuse he lost to Hughes is because he gassed is not an excuse. Cardio is a major part of being a good figher. The other excuse Penn fans us is that Hughes was bigger and stronger and Penn broke a rip because of it. OK, well…that’s also a part of it. If he lost to Hughes for that, he will lost to GSP.

BJ Penn is the best LIGHTWEIGHT in the world. Not the best WELTERWEIGHT in the world.

by Damn on Oct 29, 2008 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hughesus is washed up. The way the fighters are now in his weight class, he wouldn’t get anywhere near top 10. I was just watching the Silva/Cote fight. Man!!!! Silva is poetry in motion. That guys mental, physical, and spiritual game are so in harmony. His mind, his heart and body are at a level (IMO) that surpasses anybody in his weight class.

by WayofTheWarrior on Oct 29, 2008 7:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Like I said hughes used to be my favorite fighter, not anymore, and to be honest like hughes said he didn’t care who won between gsp and penn, and I don’t care who wins between serra and him. May the bigger dick lose, its close but it might be serra, we’ll just have to wait and see.
