Sean Sherk reinvents himself at UFC 90

Props: ESPN.com
Quoteworthy:
"This was a great fight and a great opportunity for me to come out and show some stuff that people haven't seen before. I want to show everyone that I'm growing as a fighter and show everyone that I'm three dimensional. I though I did that tonight. And hopefully I get to fight the winner of Joe [Stevenson] and Kenny [Florian] next. That's my goal."
At the ripe old age of 35, former lightweight champion Sean Sherk talks after defeating Tyson Griffin via unanimous decision at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" last night about the improvements he has made to his all around mixed martial arts game. Primarily known for his overwhelming wrestling, Sherk demonstrated a much improved striking attack and was not as one dimensional, earning him and Griffin the "Fight of the Night." It was a match up that many fans predicted going in would be dull because of the wrestling backgrounds of both fighters. That simply was not the case.

it would be very interesting to see sherk battle stevenson. with this loss, i guess griffin has no choice but to accept nate diaz’s challenge. this also will be a good fight.

I’d like to see griffin/diaz.
sherk was impressive, I actually enjoyed the fight, but am very disappointed that it was by far the best the night had to offer!

am I the only one who noticed that sherk is considerably smaller these days!
by kevin (most moderated guy on mmamania) on Oct 26, 2008 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He didn’t look that small at LW to me. Maybe you are thinking of his welterweight days?
by NameNotRequired on Oct 26, 2008 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Kevin is just trying to point out that he thinks Sherk was juicing. Fact is he looked exactly the same as every fight I have ever seen him at lw. The CSAS is not exactly known for having the best record in regards to some of the testing facilities they use, a point that Sherk tried to bring up in court, along with the lie detector and blood tests that he had showing he was clean. Big surprise, the CSAC still suspended him, yet for some reason decided to cut the time in half.

I eat my words, I wasn’t looking forward to this fight at all and it ended up being the one of the best aired fights that night. I was really impressed with both fighters.

He is a steroid freak, he cant without being on them so Im not sure what all the hype is, your right he is a monster a big inhuman steroid monster, Sherk should be thrown out of the UFC, its not like the last time was the first time, he is a repeat offender and should not be allowed to fight for the UFC anymore.

Sherk beats Penn 4 out of 5 times. Penn is overrated.

I would have to pick Griffin over Diaz w/ unanimous decision. 30-27, 30-27, 30-27…Griffin is top 5 in LW easily and the fight with Sherk was top notch. Sherk has destroyed KenFlo already.

the only people he is going to hurt with his new striking are other 5"6’ fighters with a really short range like tyson griffin. i hope he doesnt think he can trade with bj, florian, or any of the elite strikers in the lw division.

Sherk looked great last night. I was very impressed especially with his stand up.
by Ian on Oct 26, 2008 1:41 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
he only connected like 2 hits the whole fight.
by Bill Maher on Oct 26, 2008 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
More like 20, each round.
Go away hater.
by PencilPusher on Oct 26, 2008 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He was constantly grazing Tyson,he never landed 20 punches in a round ,watch the replay,Tyson was dodging most of them.I’ll agree Sherk won ,but he was no where near a destruction ,all of the rounds could have went either way
by scott on Oct 26, 2008 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah Tyson Landed The Bigger Power Punches
by Hotdamn on Oct 26, 2008 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ya… what fight were you watching. I am not a big sherk fan but i was very impressed with him last night. Sherk in my book is in the top 5 at LW.
by jaykiz on Oct 26, 2008 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I didn’t see any difference in his fighting technique, that would change the results between him and Penn.Penn would beat Sherk 10 out of 10 times ,he can not overcome Penn’s reach advantage. What was people expecting that Sherk was just going to all of a sudden suck ,so when he doesn’t people want to act like oh he is the greatest.Come on people, has people became that forgetful
by scott on Oct 26, 2008 1:57 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah right…look up vidoes of sean sherk giving boxing demonstrations, he’s so technical and he knows how to stand up.
by hamsterwheel on Oct 26, 2008 1:57 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
What does that have to do with anything I said,we already know he can not out box Penn ,so what is your point about talking about how technical he is ,he still got his ass whipped by Penn
by scott on Oct 26, 2008 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Does it matter about his videos, what happened when he faced Penn,I remember Penn out boxing him,so what is the point.Long story short he would basically be like Franklin to Silva ,he will never be able to get over that hump,he is great, his career is no where near over ,but he can not beat the champ
by scott on Oct 26, 2008 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I thought Sherk would beat Penn, and I also thought he’d beat Tyson. Sherk might not be able to beat Penn but he showed last night that he can have an exciting fight without really relying on his strength and wrestling ability. He’s a great fighter and I hope he continues winning. WAR SHERK
by Budgell on Oct 26, 2008 2:02 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Well, seeing as how he is the former champion ,he is suppose to be in the top 5.He was suppose to win ,why are you so impressed
by scott on Oct 26, 2008 2:03 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If KenFlo wins, KenFlo should not have to fight Sean Sherk unless BJ defeats GSP, and then the Lightweight belt becomes Vacant, then Sherk v. Kenflo II for another vacant belt would be money.
If Joe Daddy wins, then yes, Sherk v. Joe Daddy would be perfect.
I have always been a very strong supporter of Sean Sherk, and I believe that nobody can come close to his wrestling game. While I think a Gray Maynard v. Sean Sherk should happen, I highly doubt UFC will do that.
by "Mr. NC-17" on Oct 26, 2008 2:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I would love to see Sherk fight Joe daddy. That would be a great fight.

I think Gray Maynard will fight Guida next. Griffin & Diaz will surely be their next fight. 155 has a lot of talent, lots of good fights on the horizon there.
by efisher on Oct 26, 2008 2:27 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I hear a lot about Sherk’s improved striking and it is impressive but how about Tyson Griffin’s takedown defense. Sherk couldn’t hold him down which is impressive to me. I like Tyson Griffin however, Nate Diaz is super slick with submissions and has much longer reach. That will be a great fight.
by Brandon on Oct 26, 2008 2:41 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
True, but Nate is built like a pre-pubescent girl. Sherk should have no trouble holding him down. Even Manny was able to keep Nate down until his shoulder popped.

i was impressed with Sherk’s performance last night and i’m in no way a sherk fan. he surprised me last night with an exciting showing and it was a great way to start off the card.

Only stupid people say that two wrestlers fighting is gonna suck, wtf do you think is gonna happen? They stand and trade Durrrr what happens when two BJJ guys fight….they stand and trade durrr! Anyways was definitely a great fight he clearly still needs to work on his stand up.

sherk should have lost this fucking fight. griffin landed more flush punches and was the aggressor the whole fight. stupid judges. why do you think the whole fucking place booed. it was atleased not a unanimous….
by Sinbin13 on Oct 26, 2008 7:21 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah Id Say Split For Sure…
There Was No 30 27 Round Like One Of The Judges Scored it Either
Sherk Won By Maybe His Two Takedowns….Tyson Won The Standing War..But The Two Times He Got Taken Down And Got His Back Taken He Threw Sherk Off Easily..So The Should Eliminate The Scoring For The Takedown
by Hotdamn on Oct 26, 2008 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
ya exactly, the judges scored it wrong. And those 2 take downs were probably the difference in their eyes. Brandon you’re obviously a fan of sherk, and thats fine. But you dont know what your talking about. Sherk was out striked on his feet. Even rogan said that during the fight. But we all know anything can happen when you go to the judges. I agree with hotdamn, it should have ATLEASED been a split. Sherk took alot more then he dished out…
by Sinbin13 on Oct 26, 2008 11:12 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
You’re crazy, Sherk won the exchange easily, he did way more damage, all that Griffin made was open an already existent wound, Sean Sherk has a lot of scars on his face.
Btw, he won by Unanimous Decision, the only differente is that one judge score the fight 30-27 and the other two 29-28 for Sherk.
The whole place didn’t just booed him, the booed EVERYBODY, Sherk, Griffin, Koshcheck, Alves, Silva, Coté, EVERYBODY and every fight, the only one they didn’t boo was Santos who KOd Werdum, a bunch of ignorants, I hope the UFC never set foot in Chicago again, that was very disrespectiful toward the fighters.
