UFC Quick Quote: Anderson Silva back to light heavyweight with Patrick Cote UFC 90 win

"If Anderson wins this fight on Saturday night, I think we'll look for another fight for him at 205 (light heavyweight), then we'll figure out in the 185-pound (middleweight) division what's next."
-- UFC President Dana White tells USA Today that if middleweight champion Anderson Silva can defeat Patrick Cote at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" later this evening that "The Spider" will likely climb back up and test the light heavyweight waters. The Brazilian recently made the move up at UFC Fight Night 15, annihilating James Irvin with a punishing first round technical knockout in July. One would imagine that this time around White would book Silva in a big money match against a high profile name in the 205-pound division to get the most out of his talented star, who he refers to frequently as the best mixed martial arts fighter in the world today. White has even mentioned that if Silva is up for it he can get him back in action within the next two months, meaning he would be in line for another appearance as soon as UFC 92: "The Ultimate 2008" on December 27 or an event scheduled shortly thereafter. Former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell is a juicy option ... but who would you like to see Silva challenge next if he makes the jump? Sound off in the the comments section below.

if anderson is really going to retire after his last 6 fights?
i would want him to fight only 205ers.
no need to fight anymore middle weights.
anderson is a living legend.
before he calls it quits?
he should get that lightheavy gold.

I still think they should give him Okami. His last loss and Okami’s been busting his balls for dana with no return. Would love to see him against rampage or shogun.

no way would i want to see this fight.
especially cause anderson is only fighting in 5 more fights
after saturday.
why on earth would anyone want to watch anderson
kick the snot out of a guy he already beat.
sorry but imo okami is not worthy of being one of the
legends last victims.
same with henderson. i dont want to see the rematch.
i want to see anderson go out with a bang.
top 205ers only.

out of the fights that are available…. either chuck or luiz cane
chuck v anderson would make them big money but chuck would get knocked out very quick as his chin is very suspect lately
cane v anderson would be a good fight i reckon because luiz cane can take a mean punch but not as many ppl know bout luiz cane so it wouldnt be the best idea, money wise, for the ufc

Sounds crazy buy Anderson vs Jardine makes the most sense to me….If Anderson wins a title shot is not out of the question…Keith is a solid fighter and will have a good game plan going into the fight. A Jardine win means a rematch with Forrest or friend vs friend in Rashad…your thoughts guys
by Robert on Oct 25, 2008 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Jardine and Evans have made it clear that they won’t fight each other, even if the title is on the line. Liddell is slipping, so no need for that fight. Is Silva willing to fight other Brazilians, like Wandy or Shogun, even though Shogun hasn’t shown jack squat in UFC? Rampage is another one that would be good to see. And of course a title fight.
by PW on Oct 25, 2008 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Does anybody else think that is the stupidest thing ever. In my opinion, if they wont fight each other they should move the number one contender (Jardine if he gets there) to the back of the line. This is a business and friends might have to fight friends – its part of the game. I lost respect for both of them when I heard this. Same for Paulo Filho and Anderson Silva.

Dana White has already said that Anderson is only 1 lightheavyweight win away from a title shot at 205!~
As much as we all want to see Silva fight middleweights, he will still be fighting at 185. Definite opponents for Silva at 185 b4 he retires:
Cote
Bisping
Henderson or Marquardt
THe other 3 fights will be at 205!

silva vs rampage if he beats w.silva.. i mean he doesn’twant to fight w. silva or machida.. griffin and evans i don’t see it being as exicting as Rampage/A.Silva
Maybe the GSP vs A Silva would be better

Even though silva vs chuck would be a HUGE fight I wouldnt make that fight happen just because silva would destroy chuck and u dont want the iceman to go out that way because he’s a legend. I’d rather watch silva vs gsp to see who is the best fighter in the world and i’d pay any price to watch them two fight each other.

would u still want to see gsp fight anderson if
gsp loses to bj?
or would you then want to see bj fight anderson?
personally?
i dont want to see silva fight either bj or gsp.
i want to see anderson fight the top 205ers.
if u think anderson would destroy chuck[i do too].
then what do you think he would do to a smaller man?
he would drop george in one punch.
no need for that fight. just like a chuck fight.
he needs to fight top lhw’s.

The matchup with GSP is way different than with Chuck. That comparison is not even close. Chuck would stand and bang with Silva when GSP could take it anywhere. I think GSP (when he beats BJ) is the best fight in the UFC.

you don’t get it. If Anderson is to jump up at 205 for a quick fight its going to be in December (if things go as planned, i.e. he stays relatively healthy). That means guys like Rampage, Wandy, Machida, T. Silva, Shogun, Henderson, Franklin, Griffin and Evans are ALL out of the running.
The best options in my opinion are a Liddell fight, a Luis Cane fight or a Jardine fight.
I personally think of the three mentioned, Cane is the best matchup and that should be the fight that is made for UFC 92 in Dec. Look — with the three HUGE fights already on the card, it doesn’t matter who Silva fights, it’s still going to get ridiculous buys. Just put the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world against someone who actually will challenge him. I think Cane can do that. Whether he wins is a whole nother story tho…

there are alot of suprising fights, i think that there are alot of fighters in the 205 weight class that have the power to put silva on his back. something he hasn’t been tested too much with. James Irvin has that knockout power, but i think he was psyched out even before the match started. Put a fighter like rampage, houston alexander, or w. silva to test his chin. OR put an unorthodox striker like Keith Jardine or put Machida’s boring ass in there.
by anewera on Oct 25, 2008 2:46 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Houston Alexander? Are you kidding? Silva would choke Houston unconscious in less than a minute, unless he just toyed with him for a while to keep the fans from feeling cheated. Jardine might be interesting because Jardine has shown he does well against tactical counter punchers and not so well against guys who come straight at him.

rampage said irvin was the hardest puncher at LHW, its pretty hard to hit anderson, and even when you do like hendo, when he landed one of his powerfull right haymakers, he just smild and shrugged it off. His footwork, timing , hand speed, way he puts together combos, and kicks, are at another level. It really doesnt matter what LHW he fights, he would toy with them like a pro-boxer would with someone that just took his first boxing lesson, that is how wide the gap is between him and anyone else. I really think he toys with fighters for the first minute or two, then puts them away when he wants. I dont se rampage, evans, or griffin lasting more than 2 rounds with him

by sinbin on Oct 25, 2008 4:31 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
There aren’t many elite 205’ers that are available in Dec or Jan. Griffin, Evans, Rampage, and Wandy are fighting in Dec. Shogun, Machida (which would never happen anyway), and Thiago are fighting in Jan. A fight with Hendo is simply a rematch at a different weight. And there is no need to sign a fight with Franklin.
That leaves Jardine and Chuck available during that time. A fight with Chuck would sell, but doesn’t have the same luster it would have before Evans decapitated him. A fight with Jardine would be an ok fight. On paper either one of them loses though. And I am completely not interested in a fight with Vera until I see him actually show up to fight.
But in the wishful thinking category. I wonder if Randy loses to Brock whether he’d be willing to drop down to 205 to fight Silva. Since the chance of a fight with Fedor is pretty much non existent until he finishes his next 3 fights (assuming he doesn’t have a title when he is done with them). Of course we won’t know if that’s a possibility until after Nov 15. He keeps saying he wants to take on the best. Well, there ya go.

don’t forget about Luiz Cane like I mentioned above. I think Cane would be a good fight for the Spider.
by Anthony on Oct 25, 2008 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Cane looks to be a pretty good fighter. But I haven’t seen his complete game yet. His biggest wins are against Lambert and Sokoudjou. Neither of which is a top 205’er right now. And let’s face it surviving Soko’s one dimensional attack doesn’t show that he is ready for someone like Silva. Who knows maybe he is, but I think booking that fight would lead to a lot of shoulder shrugging and accusations that the UFC is giving Silva easy fights to protect his legacy. For all I know Cane may one day be champ, but I don’t think this is a fight anyone is clamoring for right now. Especially with Silva’s retirment talk. It will most likely be big money fights or top contenders from here on out.

i’d really like to seem him against machida. even though he would rather not right him, i know machida wouldn’t probably turn the fight down.
it’d be very interesting to see how te fight would turn out. honestly though, i can’t really picture anyone in LHW beating silva. regardless of size, the guy is just to tactical ofa striker.
by fanatic on Oct 25, 2008 5:49 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Machida would turn the fight down. As someone said above, they are friends with strong loyality to each other. In addition, Anderson does not want to be a serious contender at 205 because he believes Machida (his teammate) is the rightful owner of the 205 title. Follow MMAMANIA (or MMA news in general) you would know they posted a story regarding this. So with that said, I know Machida WOULD probably turn the fight down with Anderson.

I would first like to see if GSP can get past BJ. If he can, I’d like to see GSP/Anderson Silva at a catch weight.
I’d hold off on this if Thiago Alves wins tonight, though. If that’s the case, he deserves the next shot at GSP. If Koscheck wins, Silva wins, and GSP wins.. I think we should see GSP/Silva. Koscheck, although worthy, already lost to GSP. And the Silva/GSP fight would be HUGE for the UFC.
by R-Dizzle on Oct 25, 2008 7:05 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Oops. I didn’t see the part about Silva possibly fighting again in 2 months. If that’s the case, with the guys available, I guess I’d like to see him against Liddell. The only other guy I can think of that may be available is Jardine.
Machida (who he wouldn’t fight anyway), Griffin, Rampage, Wandy, Rashad, Thiago Silva all have upcoming fights.

exactly! Luiz Cane. Although it would suck for Cane because I think he’s a real contender but when you fight Silva its like taking an automatic step back for a bit. Then again, a loss to the Spider as he cements his legacy is really nothing to be ashamed of, it may even make him a better fighter.

lol, are you serious? Even Bisping admitted he’s not ready for a title shot. And are you telling me he can hang with Silva’s striking? Silva’s Muay-Thai? Even Silva’s jiu-jitsu?? Are you insane?
How about he beats a contender in the MW division before he’s even CONSIDERED for a title shot. Franklin, Hendo, Marquardt, Okami, Leites are all ahead of him at this point.
Bisping has fought Jason Day, the retired Charles McCarthy, and MW gatekeeper Chris Leben. You think he deserves a title shot for that?!? Wow…
Also, with that being said. He’s scheduled to coach the next season of TUF, so it wouldn’t be a possibility anyway. He’ll be coaching against Franklin or Hendo and fighting one of them at the end of the season. If he wins that fight, then sure, he should get a title shot. I don’t see that happening, though.

your exactly right, bisping has fought b-level fighters, he is not even on the same level as rich franklin, who pretty much gave a clinic against matt hammil, and hammil thoroughly dominated and toyed with bisping, even thought he fought on a bad knee. franklins striking and overall game are at a much higher level than bisping, and we all know what anderson did to him, imagine what he would do to bisping.

Dana already said that if GSP gets by BJ then we would most likely see the GSP/Anderson Silva superfight at a catchweight. After that though, it should be a big name for LHW. Throwing Soko at him would be a joke because he hasn’t lived up to the hype in the UFC and Cane isn’t a big enough name. I mean, realistically, whoever you put in front of him is going to get picked apart but it needs to be a high caliber guy and not another James Irvin. And since he wouldn’t fight Machida or W. Silva that only leaves Forrest, Rashad, Chuck, Thiago Silva. I would have liked to have seen him pummel Tito on his way out the door.
by Powers on Oct 25, 2008 9:11 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I need to see Rashad Evans get knocked out, so that would satisfy me.
I would love to see anderson move up to heavyweight, I know it’s crazy and he would only weigh like 220 pounds but imagine being able to watch something like anderson vs. Lesnar, Couture, or Fedor. I think he has a great chance of beating any of these guys.
Dana should give Anderson a shot at the 170, 205, and 265 belts. I really think he could hold all of them. And so could BJ PENN of course.
by ja434650 on Oct 25, 2008 9:32 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I practically worship the ground The Spider walks on but, I don’t think I’d want to see him in the octagon with Lesnar. The size difference is just too great for Silva to overcome. Brick would maul Anderson and basically lay on him and pound him out. Thats not something I would ever want to see happen. Let The Spider fight the light heavys first.
by Spider Rulz on Oct 25, 2008 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah, i’d have to agree. There’s very few HWs that the Spider could hang with in an open weight. IF they put a cap on the weight at say 240 to make it more fair then Silva is fine even at 220 or something. But otherwise Lesnar…. you know what, I take that back. Silva is so quick and elusive and smart that I’m sure he’d take these guys to the ground real quick and just pull a Gracie and sub these guys. There’s nothing I put past the Spider.

There is only 1 fighter imo that will beat Silva and that is GSP. So that is the only fight I want to see happen before Silva retires. The reason I say this is I don’t think Silva has fought anyone with the quickness/athleticism and gnp that a GSP has to offer

the dude that beats Anderson will be a lucky man.. cause even if someone beats him Anderson will always be the best and most dangerous allround fighter there is!

U guys fucking amaze me…putting Anderson Silva on this pedestal like he’s some sort of God. There are plenty of guys at 205 who could beat The Spider – Wanderlei (if he fights like he has done in the past), Rashad, Forrest, Rampage, Shogun, Thiago Silva to name just a few.

either you dont know mma, or have never fought in your life. Take a look at andersons footwork, and hand speed and combinations. Downt matter who you put out there he will pick them apart, rampage wouldnt land a punch, andersons hand speed and reflexes are so superiror it would look like he is punching in slow motion. Rampage cant even knock out hendo, did you notice how quickly hendo started to head for the floor once anderson started tagging him. anderson naturally walks around at 215, he is alot stronger at that weight, and still has more reach than any LHW out there 78.

Jay that really is a silly comment. I’m not one to jock people but Anderson is the real deal. He could easily hold two belts…and he would have a great shot at HW also. Dana is a smart dude and the organization really thinks outside the box. Whatever is planned for Anderson will be huge!

I agree that this dude doesn’t know what he’s talking about BUTTTTT I think Rampage would actually give the Spider a fight moreso than anyone else at 205 at least. He’s probably the strongest LHW and the toughest to KO not to mention meanest MFer. I think Rampage would close the distance and perhaps put Silva on his back and work the GnP but still Silva is sooooo dangerous. You have to like Silva in any fight that he’s put in. Even against Lesnar or Carwin. He’d just take those guys down, Gracie like and sub them.

silva has said numerous times he walks around at or near 205. Where do some of you get 215?

Dont be doing that mate…Ive been watching MMA for 10+ years and have had over 12 amateur MMA fights in the UK (10-2). U guys must feel really silly knowing that Silva couldnt put away Cote in 10 whole minutes, whereas u idiots were making out that Patrick would be KO’d within the first minute. how about u brush up on ur mma knowledge and realise that syles make fights, and cote’s style is awkward for a striker such as anderson. If The Spider beats any of the following LHWs, I will STOP fighting and retire (although I am on a 9-fight win streak): Rashad, Forrest, Rampage, Shogun. Case closed bitches…

Well, I guess you ate those words now.
Aug 2009
Anderson Silva KO’s Griffin in the 1st round in the most amazing way. Completely embarassed him. Being the “great fighter” that you are, you were probably picking your tongue off the floor after that awesome display from Silva!

Only 185 pound fight that holds any real interest for Anderson is CUNG LE. Next 5 fights I would like to see, in order
Cung LE
Rampage
Shogun
GSP
LWH Title Holder (if it is not Lyoto) Win all and go out having beaten the 170 and 205 lb champ, and still being the reigning 185 lb champ.

Anything can change in a very short time in MMA so I’ll only list my 3 favorites.
By next summer if they are still on a win streak, both Cane and Thiago Silva would be interesting but right now they don’t have the name.
Machida would be great but these so-called professionals keep pussing out.
Best fights as of right now:
Rashad – If Forrest gets injured this would either solidify his resume to challenge for the title or set up a bigger name fight with the winner of Page/Wand or Thiago Silva if he beats Machida.
Thiago – if Machida gets injured.
Wand/Page winner – this would be a much better fight for either after having a big win. Wouldn’t be great as an injury replacement because both need more momentum.
Cane – not a big enough name but better than Jardine simply because he has shown the ability to take shots and is essentially unbeaten.
Thiago – if he beats Machida. This would probably have to wait but since he’s friends with Machida, this would motivate Anderson and open the door to a LHW title shot.

Eveyone saying how A Silva v Chuck would be both of them standing up and banging. It would be but….. might only last a few seconds. Anderson doing the banging of course.

I think they’d only put Silva in the Octagon against Liddell if they wanted to end Liddell’s career. I mean 4 losses in last 5 fights with 3 of them being by brutal KO?! His career would be done.

Thiago Silva is going to cream Machida! Guaranteed! And Thiago would defeat Anderson most probably in the second round! If he can stay healthy, I believe Thiago is going to rule the LH roost for a while!

best fight ever put together anderson silva vs Fedor. bar none biggest super fight ever. GSP would not be Great super fight because Silva would destroy him inside of 2 rounds and that giving him respect.Let him fight one fight a LHW then give him a title shot. That will give affliction time to go belly up sign Fedor and let them fight.

if he beats cote’ tonight :), jardine is the next fight at 205 that makes the most sense. everyone else is spoken for, or a training partner. maybe luiz cane, but anderson deserves a higher profile fight.

I think he should face the winner of Rampage jackson vs wanderlei silva fight..and the winner of that should fight for the title

I agree that Silva has pretty much cleaned out the 185 division. 205 makes things very interesting, b/c against Irvin, we dident get to see how Silva would deal with the strength of bigger, stronger opponents. Silva vs. Rampage would be interesting, but I think the biggest money maker would be Silva vs. Chuck Liddell. There are so many quality opponents at 205 (Griffin; Thiago Silva; Wanderlei Silva; Jardine; Vera ect.), which will make his approaching retirement, that much more epic.

Everyone get off the jardine wagon because he cant defend the clinch, period. rashad evans would be good. . shogun has a good style also, he could cause a few problems. rampages strength could pose a threat. henderson looked pretty good against him at 185 until the knee. I just can’t figure out why he wasn’t this good in pride.
