Around SBN: The cost of firing vs. the cost of retaining head coaches

Patrick Cote is consistently confident and ...

Props: Canada.com

Quoteworthy:

"I ain't scared of him and I like my chances against him.... We're going to push the pace and we're going to give him a real war.... I do this sport to be world champ.... I can't wait to unleash the fury and just be the next champion of the world."

Patrick Cote has been making seemingly crazy statements like this for the past two months leading up to his fight with 185-pound champion Anderson Silva at UFC 90: "Silva vs. Cote" at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on October 25. He has not wavered. It's quite a strategy to adopt, considering the highlight reel track record that "The Spider" boasts against those foolish enough to simply stand and trade. So since it is finally fight day we ask our readers: Is Patrick Cote bluffing, brilliant or braindead?

Man, some of those McFedries shots must’ve joggled his brain. This dude’s INSANE.

by Anthony on Oct 25, 2008 1:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He KO’d McFedries too and no one gave him a chance at that.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say if Cote get’s out of the first he wins it.

Okay. So everyone may think this sounds stupid, but I feel I should say this before the fight just in case no one believes that I thought like this prior to the fight. Patrick Cote is smart for wanting to stand and trade with Anderson Silva.

Cote is a very accurate striker with heavy hands. He has 50% accuracy. Anderson Silva is heavy handed and is an even more accurate striker with a 65% accuracy rate, I believe. Because of this, people are saying that Cote will be knocked out because of this. But the thing is, Cote has never been knocked out. Not once. Never. I could certainly see Anderson Silva being the first man to do such a thing….but what if he doesn’t?

What if this fight becomes a war that finally tests Anderson Silva in the UFC? What if this fight were to go all 5 rounds? Assuming Patrick had the cardio, would Anderson have it as well? What if within that war, Cote landed a good shot? Has Anderson been working on his takedowns? That would be a smart gameplan for Silva if you ask me.

I am far from counting Cote out. In my opinion, Cote has a much better chance than everyone is giving him.

I agree, I feel like Patrick Cote will be ready for this fight, physically and mentally…he’s been a long-time friend and training partner of GSP so you gotta believe he’s been picking St. Pierre’s ear for how to prepare physically for a 5 round fight and how to prepare mentally for a title shot….Cote does have heavy hands and a great chin….That coupled with anyone can be caught at any moment, I don’t count Cote out either….If I were to bet on this fight it’d be Silva all the way, but I feel like Cote will have a good game plan and give him a good fight….

Although the fight ended with Silva as the victor, I can say that I called that Cote would do well with the stand up. He didn’t seem to be phased by the shots that Silva landed and he made it past the 2nd round unlike any other UFC fighter. Mark my words. Cote could have won that fight. Anderson Silva could have gassed and Cote could have landed the knockout punch. Give Cote credit. He did something that Rich Franklin, Dan Henderson, Travis Lutter, Chris Leben etc. couldn’t do. Go past the 2nd round. Great night of fights.

Are you by chance Canadian? Cote didn’t do a thing, and looked scared shitless.

by naturalshadow on Oct 26, 2008 3:10 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Are you by chance blind? Cote fought like he always does. It was Silva that was more cautious, because he respected Cote’s skills. Did you notice Cote’s face at the end of the fight, didn’t look like Silva did much either. Just admit you were wrong. Cote didn’t get destroyed , not even CLOSE.

by Gord on Oct 26, 2008 3:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Anderson’s knee sure looked better than Cote’s. You don’t think that Silva’s kicks may have had something to do with that?

by naturalshadow on Oct 26, 2008 3:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Talking far too much = scared shitless

by rbk on Oct 25, 2008 1:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah, he’s trying to pump himself up but inside he’s scared as f*@k. Garaunteed

by Anthony on Oct 25, 2008 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t agree. I think he’s confident, at the same time realizes the high level of opponent he is going to face. Look for a sharp Patrick Cote, that at the very least will give Anderson Silva is toughtest test yet in the UFC

by djrmma on Oct 25, 2008 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Cote will pull off the win actually. Nothing is guaranteed in a fight.

by c-war on Oct 25, 2008 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He’s bluffing in that he won’t trade right away. He will come right out and try to takedown Silva. I don’t think he is scared at all and believes Silva is expecting a standup war. I bet he figures that the only one who looked somewhat effective against Silva since 2006 has been Hendo. So ya’, he’s bluffing. He is going to try for some GnP to bloody up the Spider and then return to their feet if he managed to bloody the champ. Will it work? Who knows, but I don’t think he will actually trade with Silva from the start.

by SilasM on Oct 25, 2008 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You may be on to something there. Cote is going to shock the world tonight, I’ve been saying that for months now.

by djrmma on Oct 25, 2008 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

what’s he supposed to do, out “finesse” silva, maybee pull a kalib starnes. that’s not cote. just b/c he believes in himself does’nt make him crazy. does’nt mean he will win either. what’s he suposed to say “i know i can’t win”. i think he has the perfect attitude and a big heart, just not the right skill sets to beat silva.

by b.w. on Oct 25, 2008 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he sounds like irvin.. lets hope his gameplan is better than irvins.. which was “get ktfo”.

by eightyproof on Oct 25, 2008 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Are you guys high?! Quit buying in to the fight build-up hype and look at this objectively: Cote has average fighter talent, he’s nothing better than a more orthodox Chris Leben. He’s gonna get worked, plain and simple.

by Anthony on Oct 25, 2008 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

b.w. said it best. I agree with that completly. Anderson Silva in teh 1st or early 2nd.

by The Anomaly on Oct 25, 2008 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Best thing about tonight is that after tonight we wont have to listen to Cote’s dillusional predictions any mORE for at least 4 months!!!

God, I cant wait, Whenever he opens his mouth, something stupid comes out!

Is cote a wizard? LMAO!!!!!

by john on Oct 25, 2008 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Better yet, I won’t have to listen to all the delusional guys who think Silva will walk right through Cote in the first minute. Anyone who has been paying attention to how STRONG Cote’s chin is and how heavy (and acurate 50%)his hands are, would know he would put up a fight against Silva. Beating Almeida and not getting subbed would also suggest Silva might not own him on the ground.

by Gord on Oct 26, 2008 3:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

you guys don’t know anything about Cote, KO in the 4th Kill’em Pat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Ro-j on Oct 25, 2008 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

that’s the same thing I was thinking rbk

by Peewee on Oct 25, 2008 1:25 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He has said in the ufc countdown that he has astrategy but you think
he’ll really tell all of us he said he has a secret but will stand and trade, so i guess he has a plan #2 that we don’t know

by gorandy on Oct 25, 2008 1:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah, they all have a strategy until they are in the octagon and look across and see Anderson Silva standing before them. Good luck, Cote, ur gonna need it.

by Anthony on Oct 25, 2008 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Cote has better chances than everyone is giving him. He has a granite chin (see him eat Drew McFederies knuckles in their fight) If he can whether Silvas strikes and manage to test Silva’s chin I think he has a chance of shocking a lot of people. The only problem is finding Silvas chin, he is very elusive as I’m sure everyone knows. I think he has the best strategy he can come with. It may not be brilliant, but its definately not stupid. I will take a chance here and say Cote by TKO in RND ! upsets the world a la Matt Serra in 2007!!!!

by JRICH on Oct 25, 2008 1:30 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely JRICH, the shots from McFederies would have dropped most in the UFC as well as some of the ones he took from Leben. As a reminder, Cote may have lost the fight, but he dropped Leben! The impressive thing about Cote is that he took those shots and didn’t even seem phased. I’m really hoping for the upset, but regardless of what people say here I think Cote will at least make a fight of it.

by SilasM on Oct 25, 2008 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just think if Anderson didn’t have a problem rockin Hendo, he wont have one rockin Cote, whether by knee, or kick, or punch.

by The Anomaly on Oct 25, 2008 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, Silva hit Cote with all of those and NONE worked, now do you see what I’m saying about Cote’s chin? He doesn’t get rocked.

by Gord on Oct 26, 2008 3:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

awesome; cote by tko in rnd !

by JB on Oct 25, 2008 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think he will psych himself out trying to convince everybody that he’s not scared. Sad, coz that was the only supposed edge he had.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 25, 2008 1:30 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He’s definitely better looking than Silva, I’ll give him that.

by J on Oct 25, 2008 1:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You might have to reavaluate that at the end of the fight, lol. Seriously though, I don’t think he will look that bad at the end of the fight. He’s never really took much damage, which says he is good at protecting himself. Silva’s on an other level, so he will probably take some lumps, but I doubt he will look anything like Fitch did his last fight. It’s hard to imagine Silva losing, I just can’t help but think Cote will shock the world. At the very least I see Cote lasting longer than anyone before.

by Gord on Oct 25, 2008 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

its all hype.. this is Cote we are talking about. he will be beaten quite soundly, he just isnt UFC belt material. i do like him though, i hope he does well after this fight.

I think I can.. I think I can…

by Tim on Oct 25, 2008 2:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Cote will stand for a bit at the beginning, like all fights start, putz around and swing a few times to see what happens. Depending on how that all goes, I agree that his “game plan” strategy will be to try and take Silva down. He’s probably been working on one move like a heel hook or a knee bar of some sort. I hope he wins, but it truly will be a shocker if he can.

by MrMalone on Oct 25, 2008 3:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

why do my comments never show…

by bomberman on Oct 25, 2008 3:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I know cote has never been KO’d,and he has an iron jaw and all that. Dan Henderson has gone 5 rounds and took some shots from Rampage, he has an iron jaw and he got rocked leading up to the RNC. Chris Leben has a pretty damn solid chin and he got Destroyed by Silva. The Spider is just too accurate and hes got a pretty solid chin himself. This is going to be real tough for Cote to win

by Bung's Tavern on Oct 25, 2008 3:25 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No one seems to get it. There are good chins and there are great chins and then there is Cote’s chin, it’s better than all the others. They have all been rocked, Cote hasn’t. If you don’t get rocked, you can still protect yourself and fire back.

by Gord on Oct 26, 2008 4:00 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

lets not forget about silvas clinch, if he gets his hands on him its all over, cote will have to be on his bike in this one

Watch this little French b*tch, cry in a pool of his own blood, just like James Ervin, poor poor little kid.

by Lycan on Oct 25, 2008 4:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

what a BS comment! I say you meet him for real and you bow in respect in front of Cote

by EmondRight on Oct 25, 2008 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let me guess Lycan, you are one of those tough guys that will curse at a guy in another car as long as he can’t stop and confront you. Look, I want Cote to win, but I also realize Silva is out of his league. That doesn’t mean I’m a big enough a-hole to call the man down. You, me and everyone on this site knows that if you ever said that to him in person he’d make you his b*tch. So how about you grow up just a little.

by SilasM on Oct 25, 2008 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He should be scared because he doesn’t stand a chance.

by Suerta on Oct 25, 2008 4:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

So I posted a comment as to why Cote has a chance of winning this or at least making this a war in the standup but it didn’t come up. Hopefully it comes up, but I don’t want to type it again. If Cote wins the fight the way that I stated, I am going to be pissed because people won’t believe that I predicted it because the comment didn’t come up haha. Oh well. It will be insane should it happen.

by RyanHobbs on Oct 25, 2008 5:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Okay since my comment is likely lost in cyber space forever, I will say it one more time in a more condensed fashion.

Anderson Silva is great on the ground. Cote is great on his feet. Cote has accurate striking, heavy hands, and has never been knocked out. Chris Leben couldn’t do it and neither could Drew McFedries. What is Silva doesn’t knock him out? Then what? It could be a great war. A war that leads to Cote possibly landing the punch that KO’s Anderson Silva. Going for the takedown would be the smart gameplan for Silva. Cote has a better chance at victory than people think IMO.

by RyanHobbs on Oct 25, 2008 5:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

COTE IS FREAKING INSANE ITS LIKE SAYING THAT KIMBO CAN KNOCK OUT FEDOR JUST BECAUSE HE HAS HEAVY HANDS THAT FREAKING RIDICULOUS

WE WOULD NEVER SEE THAT

by daniel on Oct 25, 2008 6:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If you look at the fight cote has good boxing but Anderson has incredibly dynamic muay tai. That being said Cote is gonna eat some kids and knees before he executed.

Patrick Cote was in the military, people shot at him, he’s NOT afraid of Anderson Silva

The power of “Positive Thinking” is . . . well . . . uh, good luck Patrick. Silva is like a Cat playing with a Mouse – he could destroy it at any second, but it’s more fun for him to torture his prey for awhile!!
