Dana White: Brock Lesnar 'could go on to be the best heavyweight'

Props: The Sun

Quoteworthy:

"It's such an interesting fight [between UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar] because Couture is so good at coming up with plans for finding weaknesses in guys' games and exposing them. But Lesnar's such a different animal, this guy is so big, so strong and so fast at that weight it's just phenomenal. For what he lacks in technique and knowledge, he makes up for in size, speed and power. Lesnar could go on to be the best heavyweight and the longest-reigning heavyweight -- who knows what could happen with him."

UFC President Dana White feels that former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) superstar Brock Lesnar could be "The Next Big Thing" the heavyweight division. So much so, in fact, that he has inserted his pay-per-view (PPV) cash cow into a title fight against recent hall of fame inductee and reigning heavyweight champion, Randy Couture, with just three professional bouts to his credit. The duo will main event the UFC 91: "Couture vs. Lesnar" show at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 15. The size difference between the two fighters is perhaps as great as the experience level, providing an interesting hook for the showdown that will determine what attribute is more important when fists start flying.

well we know who Dana’s routing for…

I would have to agree with you and say yes, we do know who Dana is rooting for. I’ve always thought he wants Brock to crush randy and that would not only cause Brocks popularity to skyrocket even more, but it would significantly deflate the balloon flying around that is Randy Vs Fedor

by fightfan51 on Oct 23, 2008 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i hope brock wins since randy is a really greedy person. The total opposite of brock, he couldve stayed with the wwe and earned millions and millions and he went to the NFL and the UFC to do what he loves. Randy’s just greedy and i really get why dana hopes brock wins.

Is dana talking about the same person who couldn’t finish the Texas Crazy Horse??? Brock wouldn’t see the second round with a striker like Fedor.

by Arnold on Oct 23, 2008 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

hes talking about in a couple of years he could be the best heavyweight

by LG on Oct 23, 2008 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don’t be confused by the “thunder” sounds when Fedor hits people in Affliction commercials. Fedor is a good striker, but not great. Arlovski for example is a FAR better striker than Fedor, but they aren’t fighting in K1.

thats danas motive exactly for putting this match up together I just cant believe randy accepted it, and I beleive randy knows this de ja vu all over again randys in the same situation hes been in so many times before

In a fantasy world if I was told that randy is garenteed to win this fight but that I wouldnt be able to watch mma for 1 year I would take it

i hope your right

White is correct in his thoughts, and I can see Couture taking this fight for several reasons, 1. He gets part of PPV share. 2. He’s known to take on challenges. 3. He thinks it’s better to fight Brock now than 1 or 2yr from now.

by THORAZINE on Oct 23, 2008 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Randy is already the best underdog of all time, but if he can pull of a victory against Brock, it will be written in stone. I hope he can do it.

While Fedor is still young.. younger than Silva.. and /lesnar.. and Nog.. he will be the best HW on the planet. the guy is 28 -1.. and in my opninion he is 28-0-1. .cuz that one loss should of been a no contest. Fedor is the best
HW in the world today regardless of fight promotion.

Dana said “could be”… No one even mentioned Fedor. And until they fight it is pointless. Lesnar with just another 1-2 years of training (submission defense) could be unstoppable. No doubt…

by BNF on Oct 23, 2008 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Even if Lesnar had 5yrs of sub defense training under his belt.. I would still pick Fedor to beat him.

If Lesnar emerges as the UFC champ, I wouldn’t.

by BNF on Oct 23, 2008 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

tough call dealing with could be’s. I could be the greates HW champ ever if i put on a hundred pounds and learn some sic jits and muay tai. Right now its Fedor. A year from now it will probably still be Fedor.

Well, James, “could” is in the title of this thread so I figured…

by BNF on Oct 23, 2008 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely, the thread is what I was referring to. Anybody “could be” be the greatest HW ever. Just right now i believe its fedor and I don’t see anything changing that for a while. But really, title of “greatest” is a matter of opinion, so right now Brock is the greatest…. in somebody’s opinion (maybe, I don’t know). but that’s an entirely different thread.

by James S on Oct 23, 2008 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree that Fedor is currently, but he won’t be forever…

by BNF on Oct 23, 2008 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well of course not. I already said, i am going to put on 100 pounds and kill evrybody in the division under every promotions banner. Just kidding, your right, in time there will always be someone better.

by James S on Oct 23, 2008 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fedor would easily hand Lesnar his a$$. Size really doesn’t matter for Fedor. You could check out HOng man Choi’s height if you wish. As for speed, there’s no question. Fedor could match Brock’s speed any time of the day…Strength-wise though, I just don’t know if Fedor’s strength is up to par w/Fedor’s. But technique always beats strength in any fight so Lesnar’s strenth could get nullified.

by Syd[a.k.a. "The Negation"] on Oct 24, 2008 2:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

HMC is an absolute can though. Size for the sake of size does not matter. When that size comes with incredible strength and wrestling skills, and pretty good speed, then it matters.

The title of the thread has “could” in it. Hence, a hypothetical discussion begins. COULD BE!!! Get it…

by Harry Triangle on Oct 24, 2008 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is gonna be like the early UFCs. Lesnar is just a bigger stronger version of your Severns. Werdum, Nog, Napaos are just better versions of Gracies. So Lesnar won’t reign over anything. New Age version of size getting exploited by technique. Happens all the time in smaller divisions but no-one wants to notice.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 23, 2008 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Did you just refer to Gonzaga as being a better version of any Gracie? You my friend are retarded!

Wow, you must know a lot about Ultimate Fighting.

by NameNotRequired on Oct 23, 2008 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I will ignore the comment about the Gracies because someone else already commented.

So on to the size comment. It happens in smaller division all the time when there is not a 60 pound weight difference. I am not saying that it can’t happen now, because it can and will, but it won’t happen nearly as much at HW than the lower classes.

We cheer for fighters who we like regardless of wether or not they are from the U.S or not…..unlike some other people who do the opposite. Anderson vs Franklin or Hendo…. no one said I hope Hendo wins because he is American. Fedor is Russian but I root for him always…I guess this is what seperates the U.S FROM every body else in MMA…

The Cowboys are “America’s Team” but there are tons of people that hate them (i’m one). Just because he is called Captain America does not mean that we all will blindly follow him.

I like Randy and would love to see him win, but I don’t think it will happen. I think that Brock is too dam big and strong and fast for him. I just hope it is a good fight.

On to Dana. He is a tool and should shut the hell up. People in his position should keep quiet and make things happen with being in the spot light. The FIGHTERS are what makes the UFC great, not Dana.

Most of us, despite popular belief, do not care where a fighter comes from. They simply need to show skill, heart, and (for me at least) some humility. That makes most of us fans of their’s in a heartbeat. I mean, Ross Pointon isn’t exactly an A level (B or C) fighter, but he’s willing to throw down and seems like a cool guy (my definition of a cool person is if I would be willing to have a beer with them or not/if not, you’d have to be pretty much a complete douche. cuz I like beer. a lot.). That combo makes me a fan of his.

Chefdaddy came out of tha’ woodwork today’’’ points ageed, however on a side note I now really like and admire Wanderlei Silva since he started to speak in English.. it was difficult for me to see through that Axe murder persona for a long time… so in a way communicating in a foreign language takes me longer to get to know a fighter and get to be a fan of him… I find the words coming from a translator a little distant. But, otherwise I feel the exact same way u do..

I’m not ready to be a fan of Brock yet, because he’s seems like a freakin’ arrogant-elitist-jockstap and more like his WWE persona everytime… however I’m wanting to like him and will still give him a few more chances until I decide I aboslutely can’t stand him.

Randy all the way! Just to see the beast and the hype stop. Lesnar let Mir sub him while getting killed. Do you really think Randy has no chance? Wow! There are more idiots on here than I thought. Oh and when you say, “That was his first fight or that was a long time ago.” Just know Randy is way better than Mir so If Lesnar did get better he is still not as good as Randy. Chew that up and swallow it.

by Brian "Leben's Chin #1" on Oct 23, 2008 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Randy actually is NOT better than Mir at Subs, as much as I hate to say it because I hate Mir. Mir is very good at subs, Randy is not a sub guy (his words not mine, from Pros vs. Joes).

Brock is not as good as Randy, but he is bigger and faster and stronger, which is why people believe Randy will lose. Randy is giving up about 60 pounds, and Brock is not fat.

I see Randy coming in, testing Lesnar with some stand up. If Lesnar gets a crazy punch like he did against Herring, it’ll probably be over quick. But this fight is so interesting because they both have such strong wrestling. I wouldn’t be suprised to see it never even touch the ground, but then again I wouldnt be suprised if the whole 25 minutes was on the ground..

it’s just THAT kind of fight.

Brock is going to be another casualty of Steroids and HGH. A sad story to say the least. I don’t see his career ending nicely. Dana is full of shit as always, just interested in making a buck.

by kTOwn on Oct 23, 2008 11:47 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

lol, Dana has money, as do the fertitta’s. He’s interested in great mma. You guys got to realize he owns a product, he can’t allow his product to get hurt or plug other products. It’s the same as monte ellis being suspended without pay for 30 games for hurting himself on a moped. His contract said no moped driving, yet you guys tool dana for not wanting guys to compete in sambo. Thats my point too, he didn’t get fedor guys, get over it. wjy would he let (arguably) the best fighter out there compete in other types of competition. I don’t care if it’s up against me, VM, john and mexicutioner. what if I kick him in the nuts and he can’t compete for 6 months??? there’s always a what if guys!

GOD i hope randy wins- but dana is blind.. if he does beat Randy.. well you got 3 of the best Jui-jit-su champs in the HW division in BIg NOg, MIR who already beat him, and Werdum.. so no he won’t be their for a long time more like 3 months till his next fight… another reason why i want randy to win is i really want to see if dana would actually be willing to cross promote and get the randy fedor fight happen.

by Ricky on Oct 23, 2008 11:49 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Dana knows Fedor will beat Randy what do you think his main reason is for not co-promoting. Thats why he talks shit about Fedor so Fedor will join the UFC just to prove Dana wrong. He wants to get Fedor in the UFC have him beat Couture and make him the heavyweight star. They already have huge names in every weight division other than HW.

by jtl87 on Oct 23, 2008 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If the Fertitas get Affliction back under their banner he won’t have to cross promote. Affliction falls as a promotion company and all those guys need a home. Plus Dana is an old school boxing guy. He understands thats what is wrong with boxing now is too many organizations. He is eliminating the competition to make it better for the sport. Everyone who hates Dana… Get Bent!

I will tell you what I DON’T like about Dana and the UFC (keep in mind I am a huge UFC fan). There are SO many good fighters and five weight classes. Why in the hell is Michael Bisping and Chris Leben headlining a show? There should not be a UFC event (other than a fight night) where at least 1 belt is not on the line. They could put together some GREAT cards and for one reason or another they are not. THAT pisses me off.

I have already placed a bet on Lesnar the hour that the odds were first released, and got him at Even money.

A coworker of my brother watches MMA but always think the craziest things are going to happen. He’s one of those people that love Tito and Kimbo I suppose…. Anyways, he offered my brother a bet that Randy will win the fight in the first round by TKO/KO or sumbission, and wants to bet $150. My brother is low on money so he called me up and told him that I will take that bet. So as long as Randy doesn’t win the fight in the first round, I win $150.

Now THAT is a bet!!!! Even Stinky would be jealous of that one!!!!

Nice work.. that bet on dudes side is a real long shot.. when has Randy finished his opponent in the 1st set?? I’m sure he still had a full set of hair.. dude should of just thrown his $$ out the window. I still do think Randy may pull off an upset.. cuz that is what he does.. but Lesnar is a BEAST.. I have bet $250,000.00 on Brock.

Its going to be hard to carry all that cash in non-sequential bills. I only have like 2 gold plated wheelbarrows. And I have to walk about 200 yards to my personal bank vault from the poolside chalet that I just had installed.

To make matters worse, my Brazilian model girlfriend with her twin sister refuse to help me. They claim they are going to be too tired after our weekly three-some.

I am going to snort coke off of my wife’s perfect newly minted breats (DD) while I discuss my troubles with my personal bookie.

by plotze on Oct 23, 2008 11:51 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He’s an extremely intelligent and well rounded fighter, but you’re not going to choke Brock because he has no neck, and good luck putting one of his arms in an armbar. So that basically leaves his legs, which we’ve seen Frank Mir snatch one of those. I don’t think he will make that same mistake again.

I don’t care if this prehistoric, caveman looking freak “could be the next big HW..” He has been given a title fight with a 1-1 record. I think maybe dana should just go ahead and change his last name to McMann (spelling?). He should have to work his way up like everyone else. Except Tim Sylvia I guess. Wrestling (WWE)is the absolute lowest form of entertainment ever concieved anyone over the age of twelve that follows it needs to get their head checked. I certainly don’t think a background in WWE warrants a free ride to a title shot. Yes, he was a national champion in real wrestling, so does that mean anyone who is a national wrestling champ will from now on get a title shot in the UFC ahead of real MMA fighters. This has the reek of Dana McMann’s bullshit all over it!

Brock does not deserve to have this shot, but niether does anyone else in the UFC not named Nog or Mir.

Napoa- 1-2 in last three, lost to Couture and Werdum.

Werdum- 2-1 in UFC, beat Gabe, and controversial win over an undersized HW Vera.

Shane Carwin- 2-0 in UFC, has not faced top HW.

Kongo- 5-2 in UFC, only Top fighter he beat was a washed up CroCop.

Those are all the UFC HW out side of the top three (Mir, Nog, Randy). Who there deserves it more than Brock? No one deserves a title shot, might as well give it to a guy that will sell tickets.

Guys with that much muscle mass do seem to lose alot in the stamina department, but wrestlers have some of the biggest motors of all MMA guys. Sherk is as big as they get at 155, but he can go forever.

It will be interesting to see Brock tested and see how he does in the later rounds.

One thing is for sure. Randy won’t sit on his hands and knees for 5 rounds and let brock pound on him. Brock will have to finish this fight.

by scott on Oct 23, 2008 1:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The reason he is jumping the gun ,and saying that he could be the best is because he has not seen a HW that has the size and athletic ability that Brock has ,the could be part comes from that question, can he take a punch? We do not know ,but if he can than he definatly will be the best in the business.Like some one said earlier you can not choke him ,you can’t arm bar him, chances are he is not ever going to let one of his legs get caught again. So if he can take a punch than tell me how some one is going to be able to beat him.

I dont see Randy Couture knock Brock Lesnar out. It possible go 5 rounds… I have heard that it is a heawyweigt champion that called “the last emperor” who is that?

Just a small heavyweight that is completely overated. He hasn’t fought anyone that is why you haven’t heard of him.

I said this after he lost to Mir but as soon as that punch and bull rus on the Texas crazy horse was landed i knew he would be long time champ! he could be beat of jui jitsu guys though.

by Tony on Oct 23, 2008 2:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

no doubt, if he can take a punch, and work on submission defense he has the raw talent to be a long reigning champion.

by COR on Oct 23, 2008 2:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He is from Russia i have heard. I hope he can challenge for the world title someday…

Well,I may be the biggest Couture fan there is.I stood in line going in to UFC68 in Ohio.Talking to people. Not one person thought Couture would win.I admit I was nervous. He was knocked out twice by Liddell. Randy totally domminated Silvia.I know,Tim is no Lesnar.Brock is a fast and powerful freak.Randy cant trade punches with him.He has to find a way to submit him. Brock doesnt know the game well enough yet.He will make a mistake.Randy will be all over it.You just cant count Randy out.As far as the way Randy walked away from the UFC awhile ago.I think it was the respect factor.Randy doesnt need the money I’m sure.Anyways,Its a scary fight,If Brock lands that big blow it could be over quick but if he makes any mistakes,Its Randys fight.I for one cant wait till Nov.15th! I’m cheering for Randy Couture all the way!

lesnar is the ufc’s kimbo

by Harry Triangle on Oct 23, 2008 2:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I know you wanna think that but it is in fact not true at all. In fact, just making that statement shows that you are no MMA fan. No one in the world hates Brock Lesnar more than I, especially after riding Herring at the end of the fight like a cowboy. His attitude belongs in the WWE not in the UFC. However, the fact remains that he made Herring do a backwards somersault after getting gorilla punched in the face. He is a big man and once he makes the transition he may be the best HW in the UFC. It doesn’t mean anyone has to like him… I mean come on, who likes Tito? No one, but it doesn’t mean he isn’t a good fighter. He is DEFINITELY not the Kimbo Slice of the UFC. If we are lucky, with the demise of Elite XC and Parent company PROELITE, we might get to see Kimbo Slice be the Kimbo Slice of the UFC and then fight someone with skill and watch him get embarassed and then we can stop talking about how shitty Elite is.

Well,I think Lesnar would kill Kimbo, and Brock is a great wrestler. He will one day be great but now is not his time.He has alot of learning to do.I think Mir and Nog can beet him.

by Charlie Sharlow on Oct 23, 2008 2:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Im pretty sure that NOG can beat him but MIR wouldnt stand a chance against Brock. Unless he gets some kind of luck submission. :)

by paul@protecdvs.com on Oct 24, 2008 5:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess you missed a bit of the thread and the fight where Mir subbed him……..
Lesnars a wild card at this point…and Randy always has been. Who wouldn’t have lost money on a couture fight at some point in his career?
It’s a bold match up and should be a don’t blink kind of fight for the first 2 minutes.
After that…who knows..
The informed here have made some good points and the haters…well…your at least entertaining enough to slowly scroll through.
I’m not Betting on this one.

Bold statement for a guy who is only 1-1 in his UFC career…I’m calling bullshit.

by Brandon A on Oct 23, 2008 3:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

True, its bold,I think its possible with work though. He has a solid base to work from.Very big and strong.Plus he moves so fast for such a huge guy.I dont like him being so cocky though. He needs a lesson in respect too!

respect for who?

by RoB on Oct 23, 2008 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dana is absolutely right, Lesnar could go on to be the greatest dry humper the octagon has ever seeennn …

by bostonmmajunkie on Oct 23, 2008 3:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Its strange that if Randy wins its called an upset.5 time champion in the ufc against a guy 1 and 1 in the ufc..

by Charlie Sharlow on Oct 23, 2008 3:39 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes,How about the Elite XC going belly up! I feel bad for the fighters though.Like Gena. There are no female fighters in the UFC.I think she has great heart and respect for the sport. Its people like that who will suffer! So it leaves Affliction left.Lets bring those fighters to the UFC.WOW! That would make the UFC perfect!

by Charlie Sharlow on Oct 23, 2008 4:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

No offense, but you guys are thick if you think 45 year-old Randy is going to beat Brock Lesnar.

by J on Oct 23, 2008 5:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

There’s a very good possibility that he could. I think it would be foolish to rule him out.

You want to talk about thick? Listen to Brock Lesnar speak….

by justagirl on Oct 23, 2008 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dirty boxing might be a way to beat Lesnar or in the clinch, but Lesnar would overpower Couture in the clinch. Lesnar didn’t know how to finish Herring after he got him down and controlled the ground game so maybe Couture could somehow capitalize in that.

Herring’s orbicular bone was fracture with the punch that Lesnar landing knocking Herring down and I haven’t seen that happen since the Old Mark Coleman broke Don Frey’s eye shocket.

I honestly don’t know who will win.

by CaptainAmerica1967 on Oct 23, 2008 6:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

WOW ! do you think Dana is looking for payback for not fightiing for a little over a year?

by kimura pain on Oct 23, 2008 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah right..FEDORS the be best heavyweight champ..unlike the steroid freak lesnar….Dana is trying to hype the fight..which i think is still not sold out..hahaha…Dana said its going to beat all ppv records..2 weeks and ticket sales have not been sold out..unlike the chuck vs tito..which had 5 million gate attendance.this one is priced lower and hsnt sold out… COTOURE would definitely beat lesnar…mandatory drug testing for lesnar afterwards lol

by ree on Oct 23, 2008 7:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Lesnar has never failed a drug test. What makes you think now he will start failing them?

Some people are so dam stupid.

by mike on Oct 24, 2008 8:33 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hope Randy beats the snot out of Lesner via GnP. If Lesnar does win (which he won’t) he still has to beat Nog, who will also submit him like he was a white belt. The only way in hell lesnar will be the best heayweight ever is if all the HW under contract with Affliction and around the world never fight in the UFC again !!!

The only reason I want randy to win is so hopefully in the future we get to see fedor destroy his ass in the 1st round.

by rydinlow on Oct 24, 2008 8:48 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

brock slice or kimbo lesnar which sounds better. he is big and strong yes but he has no skills other than being able to get a takedown. After that he cant finish because he has no skills that was evident in the herring fight. He should be embarassed that he couldnt finish the fight all he could do was act like a fool with all the disrespectful antics.

by Harry Triangle on Oct 24, 2008 11:17 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t understand Dana’s “resistance” re Mike Tyson. I think if he trained MMA and fought his way up, it would be a great draw and no more “circus” than Lesnar.
