MMA Quick Quote: No shirts, no shoes, no service

"You’ve (expletive) with the wrong guy."

-- Affliction co-founder Todd Beard has less-than-kind words for Lorenzo Fertitta and the rest of the UFC brass after a partnership meeting between UFC and Affliction executives took place on September 26 according to MMAWeekly.com. A deal was proposed to allow Affliction back into the UFC as a major clothing sponsor (after banning them in January of 2008 for trying to promote MMA shows) with the agreement that Affliction would cease operations as a fight promoter and make available for purchase select contracts from their talent roster. Negotiations came to a screeching halt however after Affliction’s co-promotion with EliteXC’s "Heat" on October 4 and the subsequent licensing deals with UFC champions Randy Couture and Georges St. Pierre irritated the UFC.

they have a clothing deal with him as well as rampage and others. Affliction should have took this deal while they had the chance. dont f&ck with the fertittas.

Todd Beard’s famous last words “You’ve f**ked with the wrong guy”

Is Todd Beard some kinda well conected millionaire like Trump to make threats like that?… or is he just scared he’s going down the tubes?

Who wins in a fight Dana vs Tom? My money is on Dana all the way…….they should have made the deal so AA, Fedor and Barnett could come to the UFC….can you imagine the PPV’s we would be getting……………

read the article guys haha.

This just shows how affliction is really losing money. They were trying to get out of promoting mma and fund their main business at the same time (shirts). But then some how the deal went south and they all got pissed at each other and started cursing at each other.

LOL, affliction had a way out, and blew it…to cross promote with a “dead man walking”
what a great business plan!

None of these guys care about the sport, it’s always about the money. They realized how hard it is and they were trying to bail. For all his shortcomings dana has always cared about MMA. The only other big player to care about MMA is sakakibara. Truly sad.

trump is not affliction, just a business partner. saying that the fertitta’s are amateurs is just dumb. thats like saying big nog is an amateur compared to fedor. he lost to fedor but is still one of the bests and in no way makes him an amateur

They haven’t even scratched the surface of Tapout douchebaggery, which is now on the level of a pink shirt with a popped collar, with a side order of faux-hawk.

To each their own, I guess. Personally, I’m sticking with my “Jesus Didn’t Tap” shirt. As far as this atheist is concerned, that thing is the bomb. It actually has Jesus arm-barring the Devil on the back with “Break Your Bad Habits” emblazoned around the image. Beat that Affliction.

No kidding. They are losing money, and could have sold Fedor, Arlovski, and maybe Barnett to make some back. On top of that, they could have sponsored all the fighters they wanted in the UFC, and kept making a killing on their 80 dollar shirts.

As long as affliction has Fedor they dont have to kiss anyones ass including the UFC. Fedor is the ace of spades

by dia mette on Oct 23, 2008 2:06 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah except that Fedor isn’t their biggest draw, the casual fan doesn’t know who he is and they really can’t afford to keep Fedor. They can’t have him fight 3x a year. What big draws do they have? They only have a few good fight cards to put together and they won’t get the ppv buys they need even for those.

by DSmith on Oct 23, 2008 8:53 AM EDT up reply actions

so who did the near sell out crowd at the honda center which holds 19 plus thousand in july go to see I wonder who drew all those fans

and now that the casual fan has actually seen this russian monster that they kept hearing about from the hard core fan, in action destroying a former 2 time UFC HW champ in 36 sec the road has been paved and now fedor has that Mike tyson ora and will sell out venues to come

the casual fan knows fedor

by dia mette on Oct 23, 2008 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

lol, no they don’t. the casual fan knows Kimbo. You’re very naive if you think otherwise, thats why fedor wanted the rights to european videos of his fights and not necessarily the U.S. the average fan doesn’t know fedor, sorry dia mette, but it’s true, if they did, affliction would have gotten more than 20k ppv buys and bodog would have gotten more than 15k when he fought! please explain this since fedor has mike tyson aura!

by kevin (most moderated guy on mmamania) on Oct 23, 2008 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks Kevin and don’t forget dia mette- Affliction bought up a large percentage of their own tickets at that event. The casual fan’s biggest intro to Fedor and Affliction was on CBS a few weeks ago with those commercials during the EXC broadcast and they aren’t going to buy a $45 ppv just based on one night’s worth of commercials sorry.

by DSmith on Oct 23, 2008 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

even if your right (which I dont think you are) the casual fan will know him very well soon enough coming in Jan of 09.

If Fedor is able to defend him wamma belt against arlovski by walking through him which is ganna happen with a 1st rd submission then will the casual fan know him

tom atencio doesnt have to sweat at ring side like shaw and lappen did because atencio has his whole promotion based on the top fighter not to mention goldon boy and trump are in the mix

the casual fan has know choice there ganna hear his name over and over and over again from the mma media and at 31 fedor is in his prime so fans in th U.S will be seeing and hearing about him for years to come

I personally think that people showed up to cheer on Tim Sylvia, and for the free popcorn.

It’s funny to hear Affliction and EliteXC pay these fighters a king’s ransom when they can’t sell enough tickets. I honestly feel that during the UFC’s big push in Japan (along with Europe), you will see Fedor under the UFC banner. He doesn’t get paid 500k because he loves to bleed, it’s because he’s great at his job……and when there are no other employers….you’ll hear him being announced by Bruce Buffer.

Yeah basically Affliction is saying that they are going broke and they just want things to go back to the way they were…or if you still dont follow…they came crawling back like a bunch of little bitches and all the UFC wants is Fedor’s contract. The UFC doesnt do a deal unless they get to step on the neck of their competitor.

Sorry Affliction but the UFC is playing big boy games…go away!

by Warrior Training Center on Oct 23, 2008 2:53 AM EDT reply actions

UFC tried to gay Affliction and Affliction said EL OH EL FUCK YOU! Basically thats what happened. Affliction makes good money off their clothing and dont need the UFC at all. So it wouldve been nothing short of retarded for them to do this deal with the UFC.

by Khaos_warrior on Oct 23, 2008 3:06 AM EDT reply actions

Not so fast Khaos,

Economically speaking, selling $80 shirts has a short life span in a bad economy and credit crunch. To top off what is a good business model only in good economic times, Affliction is dumping money into the fight promotion game. Meaning, they are losing a ton of cash and their investors/backers are none to happy about it. Selling their top fight talent, while not necessarily good for fans, is good business.

Thus, nothing short of retarded is telling the UFC to eff off. Continuing to take a lose in the fight promotion buisness and hurt their marketing potential with the UFC’s brand reach. The potential for Affliction to not only lose their fight promotion buisness, but also the primary clothing business has been greatly increased by the lack of coming to terms with the UFC.

by Jeff on Oct 23, 2008 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Remember Khaos, Affliction overreacted and tied themselves to Elite and may have suffered some of the backwash known as Stand Gate. Thus they tethered themselves to the wrong horse, and no someone shot that horse and their out on that promotion. They may have to crawl right back to the UFC afterall.

by dandeman on Oct 23, 2008 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I am just glad we won’t see Affliction T-shirts at UFC events. Do these guys that wear them know they look horrible? I’m not saying the ones that look exactly the same aren’t as bad but come on, a bunch of 30 somethings label whoring like it’s Sex and the City!

ok derreck, what kind of t shirts do you wear? I personally like some Affliction shirts, as well as Warrior, Sprawl, Sinister etc.

by UFCFAN4LIFE on Oct 23, 2008 4:38 AM EDT reply actions

I have a couple of Affliction shirts, but not the crazy ones…I like my regular “wear anywhere” tap out, throwdown, and Harley Davidson T-shirts, but I do notice alot of older guys (my father included) wearing Affliction shirts, its kinda funny. To each his own I guess.

by Chadx23 on Oct 23, 2008 4:38 AM EDT reply actions

I also have some affliction shirts.

I personally don’t really like tapout shirts because it seems like so many people wear them that arent related to fighting or even a big fan. More “posers” seem to wear it in my mind.

I like some Sinister, Warrior and Sprawl t shirts.

And on a personal level, I am a chartered accountant so i do wear a suit everyday, but i tend to wear these when i train or am relaxing.

by UFCFAN4LIFE on Oct 23, 2008 4:41 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah good observation on the Tapout people. The Tapout gear is horrible if you ask me. Affliction do have some really nice stuff, admittedly some of the t-shirts are ugly as well but it’s subjective.

Wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a Tapout one though.

by RobH86 on Oct 23, 2008 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I tried on Tap Out tshirts. They fit worse than $15 tshirts at walmart. Affliction can be overdone with too much graphics but do fit nice.

by ben on Oct 23, 2008 4:59 AM EDT reply actions

Those endorsements were already in place before the UFC banned them. Besides you can have whatever sponsor you want and if the UFC doesn’t like it it will be blurred out when you wear it- no biggie…

by DSmith on Oct 23, 2008 8:38 AM EDT up reply actions

No point in them offering a deal to Affliction now when in a year or less they can get everything at a bargain value.

Afflictions business model outlined that they were going to do 3 shows (I think that was the number) and see how it went and then go from there.

Not the best strategy if you are going to be at the table bargaining for a position in a deal with your competitors.

The UFC can make a one sided deal and knows that Affliction is only experimenting in this field and has a lot more to lose if they do not accept the deal.

The UFC is doing the smart thing by not budging and only offering Affliction the same rights they would have got if they never had started their MMA promotion.

Their business strategy is perplexing at best, I guess they did not realize that coming from the t-shirt business to the sport business that they had to be less transparent in their operation for leverage in future negotiations.

GO AFFLICTION!!! now this is a good day for MMA

by ree on Oct 23, 2008 6:01 AM EDT reply actions

LOL Dude there’s so many things wrong with this post. First of all, aside from hardcore fans (i.e. those of us who regularly visit MMA websites), nobody really knows Fedor, and the fact that he wrecked Tim. And even if they did, who cares, nobody liked Tim anyways lol. There is VERY LITTLE knowledge of MMA outside of the UFC. For example, you don’t know how many times I’ve had to tell people that BJ Penn already tooled Takanori Gomi. I mean, these are the TOP TWO LIGHTWEIGHTS IN THE WORLD!! How come a lot of people don’t know they’ve fought? Because it wasn’t in the UFC!

Also, there’s been a lot of orgs with rich owners that have failed miserably. The UFC won’t lost to an owner that has no passion for the sport. Donald Trump is just riding the bandwagon. The guy probably thinks a heel-hook is a shoe buckle, and a kimura is a type of sushi.

Lastly, saying that the Golden Boy Promotions partnership will have a significant effect on viewership is also unfounded. One, DLH’s fans are a lot more diverse, not mainly Hispanics. And second, his fans are exactly that. They’re not fans of his promotion or anything with his name on it, they’re fans of HIS. Exactly how popular is Juan Manuel Marquez again? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

"You’ve (expletive) with the wrong guy." Who the hell is supposed to be afraid or intimidated by this fool? Not Dana that’s for sure. It’s no loss for the UFC; it’s a favor to Affliction. Go ahead and put on 2-3 more shows before you go under. The Affliction roster (the guys worth keeping) will be in the UFC stable soon enough. I guess Affliction wants to die with honor.

by DSmith on Oct 23, 2008 8:46 AM EDT reply actions

The one thing that Dana white does fear is Fedor. He knows that people will start to learn about him and when they do they will realize that the UFC does not have all the best fighters.

by mike on Oct 23, 2008 9:01 AM EDT reply actions

Yes Mike, but it doesn’t matter, 1 fighter cannot carry an organization. The UFC, by far, has the biggest and best stable of fighters. And I believe that anybody who truly wants to be the best and test themselves, will want to fight all the top guys in their weight class. THe UFC does have some of the best HW in the world and more will emerge in the next 1-2 years. If Fedor ever wants to be truly recognized as the best throughout the world he will need to fight in the UFC at some point.

by BNF on Oct 23, 2008 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Why? He’s already beaten the UFC champ twice. The best HW’s are at Affliction. There show was the best showing of HW’s that an MMA event has ever produced….by far.

Only people who are UFC fans, and not necessarily MMA fans, think Fedor needs to beat Couture and Nog (for a 3rd time) to be recognized as the best. MMA fans know otherwise….he’s the best HW in the world.

by introvert on Oct 23, 2008 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions

He beat the interim champ twice, not the champ. The best HW’s are in Affliction??? What happens if he beats AA then Barnett? Then what? Affliction will be out of the MMA game after their 3 shows. Who will he fight? If Randy, Lesnar, or Mir pan out to be the udisputed champ, he has not fought any of them. Then that person will most likely fight Werdum, hasn’t fought him. There are also future great HW’s like Cain and Carwin.

The fact is Affliction will go out of business and instead of fighting freaks in Japan, I would like to see him fight in the UFC. But I understand you wouldn’t because you hate the UFC and I am sure you never buy any UFC PPV’s.

by BNF on Oct 23, 2008 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I actually do buy some UFC ppvs. Having a wife and kid and living in this shitty economy lead to me not buying all of them. I do buy the ones that interest me. Like Ultimate 2008 I will definetely get. I love the UFC though, ask my wife she will tell you haha.

UFC does have the majority of the best fighters in the world, but they definetely don’t have the best HWs. Fedor does not need to fight in the UFC to prove himself. If the UFC guys want to be the best they have to fight him. It is his title to lose. The fact that he beat Sylvia in 30 seconds and it took Randy 5 rounds makes me believe that Randy has to do the proving, and he knows it, which is why he has been begging for this fight.

With that said I would love to see him fight there.

You are right, 1 man does not make an entire Org, Dana knows this and does not fear Affliction. Here is why he fears Fedor. If he does not bring him in people with forever think he is the best and better than anyone ever in the UFC, if he does bring him in he might prove it. Lose Lose

Fedors record against people that have held the UFC HW Title is 6-0 (2 decisions and 4 Subs)
Mark Coleman (twice)
Kevin Randleman
Tim Sylvia
Big Nog (Twice)

Can AA topple the giant?

by mike on Oct 23, 2008 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Mike, my 2nd post was directed towards introtard, not you. And my whole point is that there are several good HW’s in the UFC he has not fought, he will possibly have 1-2 more Affliction fights, then what? Fedor is notorious lately for not fighing the best guys and after Affliction folds, will he go back to fight smaller guys and freaks or will he test the UFC waters, the later I hope!

the donald would have the cash to turn affliction into a huge company if he wanted but it would cost serious money to more or less copy the ufc model

hed have to get a tv station onboard and invest $500 million

if elitexc pi$$ed away $60million on their POS shows then you need about 10 times that

affliction are in trouble
they have the major advantage over elitexc that they have several world class fighters
the problem is turning that into PPV buys and cash
how the fuck are you meant to compete with spike constantly advertising ufc

it cost them close to a million bucks to get some air time for arlovski on the elitexc card

they cant survive unless someone with huge money like trump bankrolls them

they should of talked with ufc before their venture into mma promotion and tried to get them on board

ie its a way for ufc to fight fedor without having signed him

although it appears that unless ufc have total control of fedor then they wont waste their time promoting him

i truly hope the second affliction show takes place as i really want to see fedor arlovski

after that affliction will probably fold fedor barnett lindland will go to japan and ufc will grab arlovski back especially if hes victorious against the cyborg

by bigjohn on Oct 23, 2008 12:42 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah I agree, they will either fold in a few shows or have to get serious about it. I would love to see two big UFC type organizations, but only if they would cross promote, which they won’t.

Trump can keep anything afloat that he wants, he has the money. He also has the fighters to do it, they can pick up a few more from Elite now too.

What they need to do is get their show on some free TV, that could get them going.

Stop organizing and promoting MMA events and we want to by the contracts of all the best fighters you have and then we will let you come back to the UFC. This seems to sound like an excellent opportunity for Affliction judging by a lot of the comments. Sorry I don’t see it myself. I am glad they did not sign up. And what makes people think that this could have meant Fedor in the UFC, when Fedor has no intention of joining the UFC with the restrictions they putin their contracts.
