Shane Carwin upset with himself after 91-second destruction of Neil Wain at UFC 89 (Video)
If we don't get to see "Mr. 5-XL" on television sometime soon then something is very wrong. This dude is an absolute monster. Check out all the UFC 89 post-fight interviews over at UFC.com.

No surprise to me that he was upset with himself as I would agree and say he looked a little sloppy. However, he still has an extremely promising future and his “wrestlers work ethic” is going to allow him to continue to progress. I would also be interested in seeing him standing next to Lesnar as they are listed at about the same size but Lesnar looks much larger.

I’m thinking Carwin might be a little too generous with his measurements b/c he looked shorter than 6’2" Christian Wellisch and who knows how much tape he wrapped his hands with. Lesnar cuts at least 10 or 15 lbs Carwin didnt look like he cut that much….

My thoughts on UFC 89-
Bisping/Leben turned out to be a pretty good fight, but I was really hoping for a finish..Its all good because it still was a great fight..Bisping surely needs at least a couple fights before he challenges for a title..I would like to see Bisping/Marquartd or Bisping/Yushin for his next fight..
Vera/Jardine fight was waaaay off what I was hoping for..
IMO-I think Vera really needs to go back up to HW..I really think he is just not meant for cutting weight..He looks all skinny and out of shape at LHW..I think he should go back up and start over..I WILL not be giving him a chance at LHW agian..
Soko/Cane fight was almost exactly how I had it..I have been raving about Cane for a while now, and I am sooo glad he got to showcase his skills on the telivised portion..
I am suprised with how long it took Luis to get off..But with his slow start, he got to show the world that he can take a big shot(which he did)..No respect lost to Soko I am still a BIG fan, and I know he will only get better..
Cane/Jardine seems appropriate, as well as, Soko/Bonner(maybe)…
You got to love Lytle..He is obviously never going to work his way up to a title, but the guy always puts on a great show..I am glad he is finally just going in the octagon and letting go..Thats the Lytle I like to watch..
And is it just me?, or did Kelly look like a little pussy out there?I expected way more out of this kid…maybe it was the butterfly’s
all in all, The night was not half as good as I thought it would be, but was still a pretty decent night all around..
Glad it was free!!

I totally agree with everything you say there apart from Soko. I never saw his Pride stuff, so I dont get all the hype. Sure he is exciting and is probably on the verge of top 20 or 15, but he is a bit of a gatekeeper in my eyes.
I thought Taylor got the win. Great fight
Bisping/Leba didnt live up to my expectations but had some great action throughout, not many dull bits at all.
Kelly did look like a pussy, he didnt do anything in the first round, and got owned in the second round. Big props to Davies for making Kelly look like that though.
Paul Taylor is possibly the most exciting WW fighter in the UFC if you discount name and reputation. I think Wandy is overall, and I get faaaaarrrr more adrenaline rush watching other guys than Taylor, but if you didnt know anything about any fighters beforehand then Taylor is defo in top 10 exciting fighters.

soko has not impressed but he is no gate keeper, he is still young and usually a gate keeper is a solid vet

what don’t you like about Soko? I completely agree Stagger-Lee. It’s not that Soko lost that fight, it’s that Cane withstood the punishment and won the fight. Cane really impressed me and that guy is a legit top 5 or 6 LHW in a STACKED division. Soko is still a top 10, 11 guy, he just needs to pace himself better, fight smarter. He’s as talented as they come.
Meanwhile, I don’t see what any of you are angry about with Vera for. He simply lost to the better fighter. I picked Jardine and was saying it for some time that Vera would get worked and that’s just what happened. So many people expect Vera to be this phenomenal fighter but he’s not. Vera is nothing but average. Face facts.

Listen, no LOVE lost for Soko! Like Stager said, he lost to Machida and Banha, no BIG DEAL because both are BEASTS!!!! Soko is 24 and is still one of the biggest young talents in the sport.
Banha has to be launched up the ladder after that performance. Soko was BLASTING him with BIG shots, punches and Nasty kicks at the beginning and Cane just ate em and kept stalking. it reminded me of how Fedor bullied cro Cop back in 2005.
Great fight by 2 top ranked warriors. F it why not just have:
Soko vs. Vera
Jardine vs. Banha!

Vera’s no average chump. He just hasn’t unleashed the 205 beast. He should go back to his aggressive ways.

yea carwin looks more like 6’0 or something
by RoB on Oct 19, 2008 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
shane is the real deal.
ive been on the carwin war wagon since the day he came to the ufc, this guy is the next big thing no doubt.
sure theres brock but brocks too late in the game imo, carwin is building himself up and has alot of time to grow.
theres cainvelsaquez too, imagine a superfight between cain and carwin in 3 years time after they been kickin ass and takin names.

I think these guys have a good future. To me Velasquez looks the more well rounded of the two but Carwin has big KO power on the feet or by GnP.
Carwin got caught with a big shot and the whole crowd went crazy. Then Carwin just stepped back and turned it on him.
Was close to a BIG upset though for a few seconds.

brock is 30 and carwins 33 listed on ufc.com
by randy murders on Oct 19, 2008 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He is an impressive fighter without a doubt, but from what I’ve seen (not much I grant you) Lesner looks as if he has much more speed than Carwin.
(last nights fight is the only Carwin fight I have seen)
by Confused on Oct 19, 2008 11:39 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i agree. carwin looked impressive, but brock looks better against better competition. not shanes fault though. the ufc definetly needs to step him up in competiton. carwin IS 34 years old, so he’s no young guy that can wait aroun for a few years.
by b.w. on Oct 19, 2008 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
the advantage carwin has is that he’s getting build up slowly. Brock is fed to top contenders off the bat so i think carwin has more time to develop his skills where brock has to speed up his improvement to hang with guys like mir and herring, now couture. Hopefully carwin and velasquez turn into top contenders to beef up the division.
i dont know about you guys but im sick of werdum and gonzaga.
by weoweoweo on Oct 19, 2008 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Brock will develop faster definitely because he’s bein’ fed to the lions. Carwin also needs that sh!t because he’s not gettin’ any younger….And I too don’t like Werdum[’coz of his premature stoppage against Veera, hehe!]

Is the fight posted up anywhere?
They need to give him a televised fight with a bigger name. I would love to see him give Kongo a beating.

Kongo would kick his ass. I like Carwin too but Kongo’s the man

kongo got outwrestled by heath herring how could he compete with an ncaa champion? he couldnt
by randy murders on Oct 19, 2008 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
kongo is overrated. a good wrestler like brock or carwin would take him down easily and pound him out.
the broadcast here and in the UK showed his fight. I wonder why they didnt show it in the US.
by weoweoweo on Oct 19, 2008 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Kongo sucks. Doesnt deserve to be in the UFC.
by PencilPusher on Oct 19, 2008 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
you’re an idiot if you think Kongo is overrated. He beat Herring (I’m sorry but he won that fight), he whopped the shit out of Cro Cop, then he beat the guy’s ass in his last fight (forget who) and he’s gonna whoop some more ass in his next fight. Plus, oh yeah, he’s like 26 and still improving. He’s a dangerous mother-fucker. I doubt there’s a fighter outside of Lesnar who can take him down at this point in his game
by Anthony on Oct 19, 2008 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
BNF, I told you about Vera! Ive been trying to see if he did an interview. I wonder what excuse he’ll have now?
by JV on Oct 19, 2008 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I know dude. Vera looked skinny and weak. I am over it. No more expectations. I still like him, but it will be hard to sing his praises when he puts up a preformance like that. Let me know if you find any interviews, I am also curious what he has to say.
by BNF on Oct 19, 2008 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Im in the UK and they show’d the fight just before Vera/Jardine
Did you Guy’s not get it on the Tape delay?
by Confused on Oct 19, 2008 12:05 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I googled Carwin vs Wain and a couple invalid links came up but there was one that had it. Carwin came out aggressive and they both threw a couple strikes. Carwin got caught and you could see that he felt it. His striking got a little sloppy although his strength was obviously overpowering. He goes for and gets a takedown, works into a side mount, then gets the full mount. From there on, it was the story of Carwins career. G n P!!!!

if someone needs to be upset about his performance, its vera.
im a filipino, and a big vera fan. But his fights since he came back from the contract dispute are really disappointing. I wonder what excuse he’s gonna use now? no broken hand, no dumb stoppage, no 2 week notice.. He didnt pull the trigger, there was no sense of urgency, he fought as if he was in practice warming up..
by weoweoweo on Oct 19, 2008 1:27 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think this has always been his style bc he was going up against slow overated hw’s in the beginning and we thought he was this really quick powerful kickboxer. In reality he did drop Jardine once but other than that and an awkward leg stomp he didnt do much damage. I was really impressed with Jardine’s toughness he made it look like Vera could not hurt him.
by Colin D on Oct 19, 2008 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with all that but I still thought he won the fight… Jardine didn’t look good either!
by 1-0 via Arm Triangle on Oct 19, 2008 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
no Jardine is not that good at all.. I thought Vera won, and the only reason he didn’t do it more decisive was his own fault not that Jardine was better or didn’t let Vera do what he wanted.. Vera needs to go back to hw again! I mean he had a good fight against Werdum who is a top HW in the world..

The man is a beast though. i hope he keeps training with Randy and keep getting better. i realy want to see this guy excell in the sport.

They really need to put Carwin up against somebody decent. I don’t think Herring or Kongo have a match setup yet. Either one of them would be good.
by Joe Smith on Oct 19, 2008 2:57 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Kongo has a fight at 92. Herring is probably still on medical suspension.

Dude looks line a linebacker or strongman or something, awesome strength. He’s got a purple in Jits right now? Correct me if im wrong. With power like that and some good training this guys gonna be hard to beat. I want to see him vs Cain, i think Cain would take it just by experience right now. In a year or two though, it would be a fucking war!

damn, if he’s upset with himself for how he fought last night, how mad is he going to be when he eventually loses to someone?

Sooo when is Shane Carwin going to get a step up in competition? He has finished all ten of his fights. 50% TKO and the others via submission. He needs to fight some real competition fast. I think that he should fight Fabricio Werdum or Gabe Gonzaga?
by RyanHobbs on Oct 19, 2008 9:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
He should be pissed, this fight took him forever to finish. 1:31? Only two of his ten fights have gone longer than that lol, and none out of the first round. He is a beast and needs to be put on the live card against some one big. I think Dana will put him against a top ten guy now for sure.
