Sengoku 6 to feature Barnett, Gomi and Grand Prix Finals (Updated)

World Victory Road (WVR) has begun finalizing its sixth installment that features the conclusion of its lightweight and middleweight grand prix and the return of popular fan favorites Josh Barnett and Takanori Gomi. Sengoku 6 will take place on November 1 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

Added to November's card is former UFC middleweight Joe Doerksen. Doerksen was released by the UFC after a TKO loss to Jason MacDonald at UFC 83 last April, his third straight defeat under Zuffa.

He looks to get back into the win column against Izuru Takeuchi. Takeuchi is 5-0 in Pancrase since his return at 'Rising 4' last April. Both fighters are competing on the reserve bout for a shot at the middleweight grand prix should one of the finalists be unable to continue.

No question Doerksen is thinking about Joachim Hansen's improbable grand prix win at DREAM 5.

WVR didn't waste any time bringing Team Quest product Muhammed Lawal back into action. "King Mo" obliterated the very experienced Travis Wiuff with a brutal ground and pound in his debut at Sengoku 5.

He faces the talented Chute Boxe fighter Fabio Silva, who last competed at Sengoku 3 where he knocked out Yoshiki Takahashi via knee implant.

Headlining the show are two of Japan's most popular fighters in Josh Barnett and Takanori Gomi. Famous for his wrestling persona as much as he is for mixed martial arts, "The Babyface Assassin" will be taking a leave of absence from Affliction to go toe-to-toe with a yet-to-be-named opponent.

"The Fireball Kid" is hoping to improve upon an unsatisfying performance against Seung Hwan Bang at Sengoku 4 on August 28. Gomi took the decision but admitted in post-fight interviews he wanted a stoppage.

He may need one at Sengoku 6 or be in danger of getting stopped himself as he faces a very tough Red Devil product in Sergey Golyaev. The Russian has won three straight and stopped eight of his ten opponents via submission.

Rounding out the already solid card is of course the semifinals and finals of the lightweight and middleweight grand prix.

Here is the current fight card for Sengoku 6:

Main Card:

Josh Barnett (23-5) vs. TBA (0-0)
Muhammad Lawal (1-0) vs. Fabio Silva (11-4)

Takanori Gomi (29-3) vs. Sergey Golyaev (10-6)

Lightweight Grand Prix semifinals:

Mizuto Hirota (10-2) vs. Kazunori Yokota (7-1-3)
Satoru Kitaoka (21-8-9) vs. Eiji Mitsuoka (14-5-2)

Lightweight Grand Prix reserve bout:

Seung Hwan Bang (5-2) vs. Jorge Masvidal (14-3)

Lightweight Grand Prix finals:

Winner of Hirota vs. Yokota vs. winner of Kitaoka vs. Mitsuoka

Middleweight Grand Prix semifinals:

Yuki Sasaki (22-14-1) vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura (12-8)
Jorge Santiago (18-7) vs. Siyar Bahadurzada (14-3-1)

Middleweight Grand Prix reserve bout:

Joe Doerksen (40-12) vs. Izuru Takeuchi (25-9-6)

Middleweight Grand Prix finals:

Winner of Sasaki vs. Nakamura vs. winner of Santiago vs. Bahadurzada

Stay tuned for more updates as the Sengoku 6 card continues to come together.

I’d like to see masvidal win the reserve and then jump into the finals and take that too.

I was hoping for cyborg in the reserve for the middleweights since he lost due to injury which has healed now. I wonder if Bang can pull it out against masvidal. He impressed me against Gomi.

I picked Gregard Mousasi in the DREAM GP because of his name and record, and he won… so using that same concept, I’m picking Siyar to win the MW (although I wouldn’t mind if Santiago did) and Mitsuoka to win the LW one.

Santiago’s chin won’t let him win. Nak will take it i think. I am leaning towards Hirota for the LW.

I wish that HDnet would pick up WVR. I HATE watching fights/events on the laptop when compared to watching it on my TV.

Usually I’ll just watch a couple of the WVR fights a day or two after the event. (Gomi and which ever one are being talked about most).

We always here about how bad DREAM is doing financially and with their number of viewers in Japan. If DREAM is doing bad, then WVR must be doing even worse in terms of viewership because DREAM does have the majority of the Japanese stars. But then again, they have alot of the older, washed up (or nearing washed up) stars as opposed to WVR who has a bunch of the younger and up and coming Japanese talent. Does anyone know how WVR has been doing in Japan comapared to DREAM?

They are in the same boat I’m afraid

thats a shame. I really hope that DREAM can survive!

I just read a kj noons interview and he talks about wanting a fight with Takanori Gomi….Keep DREAMING Kj!

That’s what I was thinking. Thanks Jesse.

How about this question for fans of Japanese MMA:

If both DREAM and WVR fold, what will happen with all of thier talent that prefers to fight in Japan? Will there be more upstart promotions that are doomed for failure, or will they have to migrate and fight in other coutries, preferably, here in the States where there are many promotions. There are at LEAST 25 fighters that would instantly be in the UFC right now.

there is still shooto and deep, and rings is making a comeback

it would be cool if dream and sengoku had their GP winners face off, but since the lw sengoku winner is fighting gomi, and mousasi looks like hes going elsewhere, its more of a nice thought. who the hell will hansen fight for his defense, maybe JZ?

I’ve actually read that KJ Noons plan to fight in Japan and Nick Diaz is open to fighting in Japan again since DREAM paid him recently for his fight. There was one more person wanting to fight in Japan. I can’t quite remember.

all of these fights are garbage, but somehow I still enjoy watching Sengoku. I hope Kaz wins the whole thing, he was just too fat and small at 205, but is a great fighter.

Three additional fights to SENGOKU VI were announced today. Takanori Gomi will face Russian Sergey Golyaev who is most known for having fought and lost to Joachim Hansen. In the Middleweight GP reserve fight, as expected, Joe Doerksen will take on Izuru Takeuchi. King Mo’s opponent will be Chute Boxe’s Fabio Silva who last defeated Kazuo Takahashi at SENGOKU III.

WVR PR Kuniyasu said that for the possible 11th fight, negotiations are ongoing with a fighter that the Japanese are very familiar with and who hasn’t fought in Japan for around 2 years.

Lightweight Fight:
Takanori Gomi vs. Sergey Golyaev

Light Heavyweight Fight:
King Mo vs. Fabio Silva

Possible Participants:
Josh Barnett
Kevin Randleman

I think this will be Sengoku’s best card to date.
