Kalib Starnes: 'I'm glad I'm not fighting' in the UFC

Props: Sherdog.com
Quoteworthy:
"People like to be on the side that’s winning. They’re supportive when you’re winning and critical when you’re losing. I still get some sweet hate mails pretty regularly. There are some gyms with guys who begged me to come in there and train and do seminars before that fight and who wouldn’t return my calls or talk to me afterwards…. It’s good. It separates people who are really supportive and back you from people that are just trying to jump on your wagon while you’re successful…. [Being granted a release from the UFC] was something I’m happy about. I’m glad I’m not fighting there and will be fighting independently where I want and for whoever wants to pay me."
Kalib Starnes talks about life after his dreadful fight against Nate Quarry at UFC 83: "Serra vs. St. Pierre 2" earlier this year, which will perhaps go down as the worst performance ever inside the Octagon in modern history. The former contestant on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) indicates that he broke his foot early in the fight, causing him to disengage and flee from "The Rock" the entire fight. UFC President Dana White, as well as those who watched the fight, were generally disgusted with the fight -- the negative reaction he received was quite remarkable, actually. Starnes asked to be released from the organization shortly thereafter and the request was granted. He will return to action against Kala Kalohe Hose under the Destiny banner on November 15.

We’re glad you’re not disgracing the octagon and all the hard work that those before you have done to promote the sport anymore!

Exactly. His story changes all the time (reasons for him running). I have read it was him protesting health care or it was strategy that backfired on him. Now I read it’s his foot? WTF.
Some simple advice : Own the mistake. Apologize. Prove yourself and maybe the UFC and MMA fans in general will extend some grace to you.
Acting as a bitter victim is lame.
Man up and have a sense of accountability.

Word. You know he’s full of sh*t. Why did he sign contracts, train, promote, and fight if he didn’t want to be there. Sounds like a lot of work, with little return. It doesn’t make any sense at all.
Thanks for the waste of time, then, Kalib. IF you don’t want to fight the best, you won’t ever be the best, that’s is the UFC. So, obcviously you’re not trying to better yourself as a fighter. Money is your drive, heh??? Good luck on your independence and making money when that performance is what you will always be rembered as… Fooooreeeeever. No one wants to admit that one. I’m sure the reason why you said this is to help you rationalize why you gave the worst performance in octagon history, good luck with that too.

I think Kalib’s vagina started hurting on TUF. I always thought, that , maybe Shamrock was being too tough on him and he REALLY was injured……when Kalib was crying that his ribs are broken after Grove kicked him.
Now, seeing the real Kalib, I doubt that anything was even wrong with his ribs in that fight….he in just a pussy and didnt want to fight in a little pain or RISK possibly injury.
I think he is in the wrong line of work

Kalib doesn’t get it… If he lost while trying to beat Quarry or even just put up a boring but intelligent fight.. he could still have had ‘RESPECT’ but he ‘QUIT’ in the cage round after round and did nothing to even try to win or save face… it showed he absolutely had ZERO HEART… it has nothing to do with jumping on the bandwagon of a successful fighter and everything to do with jumping off the band wagon because he was a SCARED MMA FIGHTER… you don’t want a guy like that in your gym. it’s disheartening to be in his presence.

couldn’t agree more, someone should ask this tool how he managed to run so much on a broken foot. i just fail to see how a broken foot makes a person get more mobile in the ring, if anything you would think he would want to stand and trade to try to end the fight early or clinch and pull guard to get OFF his foot. I think he’s just Mitch Bade.

Jon Jones is not a newbie to the UFC. He has 1 fight under his belt, he fought Andre Gusamao or whatever, the BJJ LHW from IFL just 1 or 2 events ago (don’t want to look up).
Jones is SUPER athletic. I had just found out about him like 3 weeks before he got signed by the UFC when I was watching highlights on “Inside MMA”. He is young and raw, but has a TON of potential.

It seems like he’s been in denial for a long time and still is. Of course the gyms aren’t begging you to do seminars. You stunk it up in the Octagon. It’s not about you Kalib, it’s about the sport, and you’re now noteworthy on the wrong side of things.

by roy on Oct 14, 2008 1:09 PM EDT reply actions
Starnes is a giant douche. What he doesn’t realize is that his actions speak louder than his b.s. words. No matter how many of these statements he makes (and there have been several), by the way he performed he showed his true character. No matter how much damage control he tries to do, everyone knows he has no heart. He will pull the same crybaby act again when he doesn’t get his way and can’t cut it or when he needs his diaper changed. That is why no promotion worth its own salt would have any association with him.
by PJJ on Oct 14, 2008 1:20 PM EDT reply actions
If Kalib really wants a career in MMA then he needs to:
A) Come to terms with his mistakes and poor decisions.
B) Acknowledge those poor decisions publically.
C) Promise to overcome those past decisions by not repeating them in the future.
D) Get out there and put together some respectable and exciting wins.
E) Actively seek to make a return to the big show.
Perhaps then he will regain the respect of the fans of the sport. Perhaps then we’d be willing to give him another chance.
Sitting in denial, lashing out at everyone else, etc is not helping him.
by Mike on Oct 14, 2008 1:23 PM EDT reply actions
What I still don"t understand is, if his foot was broken and causing so much pain, why answer the bell? There is no dishonor in saying, “Hey, I’m hurt and can’t compete to my best ability”. This would have been much better than discracing himself, Nate, and the UFC.
by Jeff on Oct 14, 2008 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions
I’ve broken my ankle recently, I can tell you there’s no f’ing way you can walk on a broken foot, much less walk. It’s a b.s. excuse for a scared fighter. There was no foot injury.
by SR on Oct 14, 2008 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions
I meant “run” for the second walk. No way you can walk on a broken foot, much less run.
by SR on Oct 14, 2008 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions
i dont know how he was able to run so fast with a broken foot. instead of running or not answering the bell, he should have stood his ground, went for the clinch or takedown and done something. worst thing that could have happened was that he got koed or submitted, a loss, so what? he would still probably be in the ufc and being lauded as a brave fighter for fighting with an injury. i remember kalib qutting on the stool during his tuf fight with kendall grove and quitting, saying his ribs were broke. maybee they were injured, but he still should have pulled a B.J. and went down swinging. im done.
by b.w. on Oct 14, 2008 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions
It takes a special man (read slightly unstable) to pull a BJ and go down swinging.
By the way, I agree that he was simply scared and running. I just think that his excuse does not make any sense.

Everyone is supportive when you win and critical when you lose…
well, I’ll be a bats asshole if that doesn’t make perfect sense. Hello if the new york mets made the playoffs everyone would still be crying about whats wrong with the team? If you’re losing (and losing in such a bad performance as Kalib’s last in the ufc)that means you need to re-evaluate your approach and everything. As I see it, you win because you do something right and you lose because of mistakes. You should aim to correct those mistakes.
by Fidel Cashflow on Oct 14, 2008 1:37 PM EDT reply actions
Agreed. Certainly the manner in which he (and the NYM) lost are the reason people were so critical of him, had he done well in a loss no one would really care. People lose all the time, its part of life. Just because you can fight doesn’t mean you should, it seems clear to me that he gets scared to fight.
by Bung's Tavern on Oct 14, 2008 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions
The three best things about that fight were:
1) Watching Nate do the running man at the end of the 3rd round (and all Kalib could do in response was flip him off)
2) Having Kalib be the only loser to ever have a judge score the fight 30-26 against him
3) Getting to see what Kalib is truly made of as a fighter

You guys are funny. The guy got in there and fought. He had a broken foot for christ sake. Of course he doesnt want to just stand there and get his face beat in cause he cant do anything with a broken bone.
It should be about money anyways. If I was a professional fighter with the biggest mma company in the world, I would expect to get some good money. Especially since they constantly flash how great they are as a company… And how much money the company makes…
Kalib is totally right. I see it here everyday. You all like a fighter until they lose. They are so awesome until they lose.. then they are washed up, old, one dimensional, scared, a pussy, glass jaw, etc. etc. Its stupid. I feel the same way as Kalib. I agree that his performances werent exciting, but are Machidas? Hell no they arent. The only difference is that he hasnt got an ass whoopin yet, so people still like him.
Mark my words, you will see this happen to Silva, GSP, again with Penn, and every other fighter that you all love right now.
This is so ridiculous.

penn, gsp and silva have all lost! nobody has jumped off their bandwagon “because” of the way they lost. penn hurt his rib and still came out swinging and took his beating like a pro who is getting paid to does. none of these guys have lost by running, big difference. did kalib ever have fans?
by b.w. on Oct 14, 2008 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Thats not what I said. When they arent on top people will talk shit. I dont know why you are acting like it doesnt happen everyday. When Penn wasnt in the show for a bit, people talked shit about him. Saying he wasnt committed and didnt have the heart and that he was no good anymore. The same shit that you read about every fighter that isnt on top. Lucky for Penn, when he came back, he did great so everyone is back with him. Dont get me wrong I like the dude. Im just giving an example. As for GSP, people talked massive shit about him after he lost to Serra. How many times have you heard someone say that he went crazy for the thousandth time or whatever. Once they realized that he is the most determined fighter there is and that he can beat almost anyone at their own game… the trash talking ceased.
@ Jon
I was just being a dick. I know that I dont know you as a person or anything so that was uncalled for. My apologies. Im not even a Starnes fan. Im just getting really sick of how people are so quick to talk shit.

Hello everyone. This is Dr. Bombay. Since I had the night off from the STD clinic, I was one of the attending physicians at UFC 83 in Montreal. After his fight, i examined Mr. Starnes and found absolutely no evidence of a broken or even fractured foot. Mr. Starnes never complained of any foot pain at all. He did however, complain of great pain in his vagina. This may very well be the reason for his cowardly performance.

Something that most people dont know about this fight is that Kalib Starnes was actually really sick coming into the fight. He actually contracted a very common disease thats found in alot of fighters or even wrestler, while he was warming up. the disease is called vaginitis with a serve side of pussitis.
