Seth Petruzelli pockets knockout bonus BEFORE Kimbo Slice knockout

Props: MMAFanhouse
Quoteworthy:
"[ESPN and Sports Illustrated are] both wrong. We have given submission bonuses in the past but they’re not as common as knockout bonuses. If the question is, ‘Have we ever given submission bonuses?’ The answer is yes. But we give knockout bonuses more often. We gave Seth a knockout bonus before the fight started. That was part of the deal."
Elite XCs Jeremy Lappen attempts to clarify remarks regarding what the shady pre-fight situation was like before Seth Petruzelli knocked out promotion poster boy, Kimbo Slice, in 14 seconds. This "clarification," however, sounds more confusing ... and alarming.

The Elite management needs to shut-up and fast. Everything they say is just sinking them deeper and deeper.

They should just stop trying to defend the undefendable. No matter what story comes next, no one believes it. Just Stop!!

The Bonus has to be given, or agreed upon, before the fight… it is not untill the fighter KOs the other fighter, then the fighter can receive the bonus.

whew! can they dig their hole any deeper? how can you pay someone a ko bonus BEFORE the fight. unbelievable!

That is the most retarded comment I have heard from them yet. It just gets worse and worse…..
What are they saying?? They GAVE Seth a KO bonus BEFORE the fight even started??? Meaning, hey Seth we ALREADY PAID you for a Knockout bonus, so you BETTER go out their and try to KO him, none of that sissy ground stuff.
WTF?

Hey, Lappen was just trying to clear things up when he accidentally told the truth. Now the investigation will have to be done on the athletic commission also because they said they were present for the negotiations and everything was good. This is so bad for MMA.

fightfan – That sissy ground stuff is called Mixed Martial Arts! Ever heard of it? It’s when I fight can stand and trade or Wrestle and Submit a fighter. Maybe EliteXC should change there name to K-1.

umm i think fightfan was speaking in the same ways as Lappen was. He didn’t mean it himself. Pretty obvious.

There is your made it worth his while to stand up with him. They gave him a knockout bonus so that he would stand and trade with kimbo. Hoping kimbo would take his head off … woops

Well that makes everything better… What an idiot. Their lawyers need to step in and issue a gag order to these retards.

Ok I am confused now. The UFC gives sub, ko, and fight of the night bonuses. But they are open to every fight and only chosen after all the fights are over. So how does it make sense to give a KO bonus before a fight and it only applies to one fight? Doesnt that kinda mean they wanted the fight to go a certain way? I know the UFC also gives fight bonuses as to how exciting or good the fight was but those are all after the fights are over too. So what the hell is EliteXC doing? Looks so bad.

Kimbo took a dive you guys, its so obvious. How much do you think they could have made if they “Knew” Kimbo would fall in the 1st minute?

Were bets being taken on Seth? I thought it was too short notice. What were the odds?
by MoonUK on Oct 11, 2008 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That was one of the thoughts going through my mind on Sat. night. I wonder what the betting odds would’ve been & who would’ve been favored??? This definitely needs to be investigated by the FBI now. I remember watching on ESPN about this story of a huge tennis match upset. Some guy lost big time to a Russian unranked opponent. Turns out the Russian Mafia set up the whole thing and banked millions of the event. I mean its a stretch, but just saying there are definitely fixed sporting events out there…

A KO bonus?, is that what they are calling a bribery payment now?
by hughes on Oct 11, 2008 3:02 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
What are you guys, IDIOTS?
They had a knockout bonus written into the contract!
He wasn’t actually handed cash. The website is fucking spinning this, and it’s ridiculous! Basically, a condition of his contract was that if he knocked Kimbo out (meaning stopped him via KO or TKO, whether on the ground or on the feet) he would receive additional compensation.
Do you guys watch the Ultimate Fighter?
Remember when Dana White said if you stop your opponent, 5k? There is no difference here.
by Frank on Oct 11, 2008 3:08 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Where did you get that info? Do you have a link to the site? I’d like to read the contract.
by DaneJa!260 on Oct 11, 2008 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well Dana gives the guys on TUF 5k if they can stop their opponent(KO/TKO or Sub). Not just for a KO. And the TUF fights arent even real fights as they dont count on the fighters records.
by NorthStar on Oct 11, 2008 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
it ridiculous that you are buying into the EliteXC BS. Saying “if you finish the fight you get 5k” is a lot different than saying “here is 100k if you don’t take the fight to the ground”
by kitsunex on Oct 11, 2008 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Stopping your opponent and naming the way you want him stopped are two different things.
by JB on Oct 11, 2008 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Before you call guys idiots, you should look up the word GAVE. They DIDN’T say they WOULD give him a bonus, IF he got a KO. They GAVE him the bonus BEFORE the fight STARTED. Dana said IF, do you get that, IF you KO them. BIG DIFFERENCE. They PAID him for the KO BEFORE he GOT the KO.

Can we vote EliteXC off the island already?

Hahaha. If you don’t check Mania every hour of the day, you’re probably not up-to-date with the most recent scandal news EliteXC is involved in. I respond to a post about EliteXC come back a few hours later and theres a new story with more crap about EliteXC. WOW. These guys need to take class called: Business Ethics by Billy Madison. Haha.

The scary thing is that they really believe what they are saying. Do they think we’re that stupid to buy into their shit pot organization and shady ways of business? Thanks for making MMA a little more like boxing and giving good companies like the UFC a bad name! I know the UFC has their own issues (fighter pay), but there has never been news of fight fixing!
GO AWAY Elite XC!!!
by mmamac on Oct 11, 2008 3:53 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I get it. They offered Seth a pre-fight KO bonus in order to get him to trade punches. He did stand with Kimbo to justify that, but shouldn’t he have received a second KO bonus for actually doing it?
by MrFyer on Oct 11, 2008 4:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
What a horrible situation. I think Kimbo is a joke as much as the next guy but I was really hoping Elite XC would be successful, just because I think competition between different organizations is good for MMA. It gives the fighters more opportunities and will encourage different promotions to step up their fight cards and give fans bigger and bigger fights. This is going to be a nail in the coffin for Elite XC though and hopefully won’t have any ill effects on the UFC and the growth of MMA in general. I wish Kimbo had stayed in the freaking hood and out of MMA.
